Writers from late-night shows including Last Week Tonight, The Daily Show and The Late Show among others are heading to the Primetime Emmys after the Television Academy performed a U-turn on its decision to exclude a key writing category from the main awards.
The TV Academy, Fox and the WGA have reached an agreement to include the Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series category, which also includes nominees Late Night with Seth Meyers and Saturday Night Live, during the live telecast.
The TV Academy, which runs the Emmys, set to air on Fox on January 15, had previously stated that the award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series was set to be handed out at the Creative Arts Emmys, rather than during the Primetime show.
It had been replaced by Outstanding Variety Special (Live) in November.

The Writers Guild of America continues to express its displeasure with the exclusion of some writing categories from the 75th Emmy Awards.

It’s been a strange year for late-night and things are only going to get weirder.
All of the late-night shows were dark between May and October as as a result of the writers strike and the genre lost one of its longer-running shows as The Late Late Show, which has run for over 5,000 episodes since 1995, is to be replaced by an old Comedy Central game show.
The change hasn’t been quite as significant as last year when James Corden and Trevor Noah revealed they’d be stepping down, Warner Bros. Discovery’s new regime killed Samantha Bee’s Full Frontal and Desus & Mero, who, for some, were the duo to reinvigorate the field, broke up.
Late-night, it seems, is just ticking along.

While Tamron Hall is the host of her successful, self-titled daytime talk show “Tamron Hall,” there was a hypothetical world in which she may have been part of the late-night TV landscape. But Hall told TheWrap she’s not convinced that idea would have gotten past network executives.
It’s something Hall thought about earlier on in her career, and one that was suggested to her prior to the launch of her now two-time Emmy-winning talk series.
“I have a former producer at MSNBC who always said, ‘You should be in late night, you should be in late night,'” Hall said. But she also mentioned that she didn’t think there would be as clear of a lane for her to pursue late night in comparison to other on-camera talents who come from a different background.

Bipoc late-night and variety show writers say the lack of diversity on-screen and behind it is due to a lack of chances and opportunity given to people of color.
“If you look at traditionally… the hosts that we remember a lot, the ones from those 11:30 p.m. 12:30 a.m. shows, they got so many chances,” Greg Iwinski, who has written for Comedy Central’s “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” and CBS’ “Late Show With Stephen Colbert” said Thursday during TheWrap’s strike roundtable, “Bipoc Late-Night and Variety Writers Speak Out.”

In 2015, the TV academy made the decision to split the variety series Emmy category into two separate ones in order to better recognize achievements in the talk and scripted subgenres. This year, there are 19 shows vying for spots in the Best Talk Series lineup. The amount of 2022 hopefuls was also 19, which was down from 20 in 2021 and 24 in 2020. Four of the series listed below will reap bids this year, giving each entry pretty good odds.
All 20,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 26 to cast their ballots for their favorite talk shows. Unlike at the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally.
Whereas they could previously make as many selections as they liked in each category, voters will now be limited to four choices here, reflecting the number of eventual nominees. Which of the talk series listed...

No host has been named as of yet, and there are still a lot of questions to be answered as to how the writers strike may impact this year’s Emmy Awards, or if the calendar might shift. But for now, the main event is still scheduled to air on Monday, Sept 18 at 8 p.m. Et/5 p.m. Pt on Fox.

If Murphy agrees to star in the film, he’ll play a character who falls for a woman and finds himself pulled into a heist attempt. Burrows and Mider have another spec...

Netflix only recently unveiled a sizzle reel for all the films it will premiere throughout 2023. You People certainly stood out, particularly due to its star-studded cast. But Jonah Hill, who also co-wrote and produced the film, has already announced he won’t promote his movies going forward, including the rom-com. So what do his You People co-stars think of his decision?
‘You People’ stars Jonah Hill and Eddie Murphy
In You People, Hill and Lauren London play a new couple whose relationship brings their families into conflict. Julia Louis-Dreyfus and David Duchovny portray Hill’s parents; Eddie Murphy and Nia Long play London’s parents.
The ensemble cast also includes Molly Gordon, Sam Jay, Travis Bennett, Mike Epps, Deon Cole, and Rhea Perlman. Prior to its Netflix launch on January 27, 2023, You People briefly played in theaters.
Critics have been mixed-to-negative on the film. On Rotten Tomatoes, You People currently has a 43 rating.

Plot: A new couple and their families find themselves examining modern love and family dynamics amidst clashing cultures, societal expectations and generational differences in this comedy from Kenya Barris.
Review: Last year, Kenya Barris wrote Disney’s remake of Cheaper By The Dozen, updating the family dynamic to be a multi-ethnic brood including stepchildren and half-siblings. The comedy didn’t strike quite the same chord as Barris’ successful sitcom black-ish, but it did showcase the changing look of what 21st-century families look like. Now, Barris’ feature directorial debut, You People, takes a more mature look at race and anti-semitism from a humorous vantage. With Jonah Hill and Eddie Murphy taking top-billing, You People is a sweetly funny update of Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner? for the next generation, even though it is not a direct remake of that classic film. Full of comedy and genuine romance, You People works well...

There’s an alternate timeline where You People, the feature directorial debut of Kenya Barris (black-ish), is the next great romantic comedy. There’s another version where it’s a biting satire that delves into the strain parents can inflict on their grown children. There’s an even more distant option, where it’s a sharp critique on race relations that both entertains and tackles the hard truths around cancel culture, privilege and faith. While the film clearly wants to be all of those options, it ends up buckling under...

You People is the upcoming Netflix comedy starring Jonah Hill, Lauren London and Eddie Murphy. It is directed by Kenya Barris and written by Kenya Barris and Jonah Hill.
A movie about dialogues… which are terriffic. This movie bears the brand of its scriptwriters Kenya Barris and Jonah Hill who know how to make a rowdy comedy that is very rowdy and does not offend anyone… or offending people who take themselves a little too seriously.
This is a charming, amusing and intelligent comedy with dialogues that are daring, sophisticated (or not)… the first part.
About the Movie
This movie, which deep down is about what is politically correct that in You People, think that everything, really, is truly stupid. A delicious prank that mocks established things and what we have been told we should say in order to (quote as they say in the movie) to be “cool”.

“You People,” Kenya Barris’ feature directorial debut for Netflix, is laden with good intentions: Collaborating with Jonah Hill as a co-writer and star for this new comedy makes sense when one considers that both men are Los Angeles natives celebrated for their comedic flair and also devotees of hip-hop culture. Add to that the reunion of co-stars Eddie Murphy and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, both comic giants who came up together on “SNL” in the 1980s, and expectations run high.
But good intentions aren’t enough to float what is essentially a hip-hop–tinged, LA-centric comedic update of “Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner.” It’s a concept that has seen a few iterations over the years — most notably 2005’s “Guess Who,” starring Bernie Mac, Ashton Kutcher, and Zoe Saldana — and “You People” also draws some inspiration from “Meet The Parents,” with faith-based differences providing most of the tension.

Former Saturday Night Live castmates Eddie Murphy and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, two of the funniest people alive, are reunited and then immediately wasted in You People. A culture-clash romcom wholeheartedly convinced it’s a satire, it marks the feature directorial debut of Kenya Barris – creator of the sitcom Black-ish and its spin-offs, Grown-ish and Mixed-ish. Was this, at some point or another, the concept for a series, too? It certainly feels that way. You People carries the unresolved, disjointed tension of a sitcom that’s been stretched to the two-hour mark.
Louis-Dreyfus and Murphy play Shelley Cohen and Akbar Mohammed, respective parents to Ezra (Jonah Hill) and Amira (Lauren London), a couple whose first interaction involves a mistaken accusation of racial discrimination. The Cohens are liberal and Jewish, and Shelley swears she hated Gone with the Wind “before it was cool”. Akbar experienced a mid-life renewal of his Muslim faith and...

Kenya Barris’ sitcom Black-ish was renowned for its ability to tackle questions about race in a format usually reserved for 30-minute family shenanigans. Its best episodes were unafraid to drop the laughs while unflinchingly discussing important issues. So, it’s disappointing that You People, Barris’ feature directorial debut, too often feels like a preachy, overlong sitcom.
Jonah Hill co-wrote the script with Barris and stars as Ezra, an L.A stockbroker whose real dream is to go big with the podcast he co-hosts with best friend Mo (Sam Jay). Ezra’s Jewish, but he’s more comfortable discussing the Black movies, music, and culture he grew up loving. When he meets costume designer Amira (Lauren London), he finds someone he instantly feels seen by, and it’s not long before the two start talking marriage. The only obstacle? We are now nearly sixty years removed from the culture-clash drama "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner," in which the interracial romance between a Black man and a white woman comes under the microscope primarily courtesy of the white woman's parents. But the potential tensions of an interracial romance haven't dissipated too much in the 2020s — if the new Netflix film "You People" is any indication, the tensions have only increased. Though "You People" goes beyond the "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner"-style setup fairly quickly, it's also intended to explore whether or not interracial romances can work now, especially if the parents of those involved are able to get over their own stereotypes and biases. Parts of "You People" inspire big laughs, but parts of it fall flat and/or end up feeling a bit like a mixed-media lecture.

Sitcom mastermind Kenya Barris knows his way around the witty rat-a-tat, as a writer and an occasional director. At the helm of his first feature, the Black-ish creator choreographs a who’s who of comic talent and lets them shine — key among them Eddie Murphy, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Jonah Hill, who shares screenwriting credit with Barris. In their L.A. story, the 35-year-old son of affluent white Jews and the daughter of affluent Black Muslims fall in love. Let the comedy of discomfort begin.

In a nutshell the brilliantly hilarious, pertinent, and wickedly smart new movie, You People is in some ways a new age Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner, that landmark 1967 Tracy-Hepburn-Poitier Oscar winning comedy about the effect an interracial relationship has on the parents of the young couple. Of course back then it was a major social issue and even had trouble booking some southern theatres. The idea was switched in a Bernie Mac/Ashton Kutcher 2005 remake that all those years later did not have the same impact. With anti-semitism and racism back on the rise in 2023 America however the concept of an interracial/interfaith marriage, Black and White, Jew and Muslim, could not be more timely or needed, and in co-star Jonah Hill’s and director Kenya Barris’ whipsmart screenplay is also a knock-you-out-of- your-seat laugh riot. Ironically I saw it this week at its World Premiere at the same...

Netflix’s list of films premiering on the streaming service in 2023 isn’t nearly as long as their ambitious 2022 film slate. Yet even with a slimmed-down slate, the lineup of movies arriving this year is impressive and checks off nearly every genre.
The streamer will be dipping back into familiar territory with sequels to Murder Mystery and Extraction. Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon, Sam Esmail’s Leave the World Behind, and David Yates’ The Pain Hustlers will premiere this year, as will the film continuation of Luther starring Idris Elba. And two romantic comedies with big-name casts made their way into the lineup: Your Place or Mine (Ashton Kutcher and Reese Witherspoon) and A Family Affair.

During his acceptance speech for the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes on Tuesday night, Eddie Murphy offered some key advice for up-and-comers in the industry: Don’t mess with Will Smith.
“I want to let you know that there is a definitive blueprint that you can follow to achieve success, prosperity, longevity and peace of mind,” Murphy said at the end of his speech. “It’s a blueprint and I’ve followed it my whole career. It’s very simple, just do these three things: pay your taxes, mind your business and keep Will Smith’s wife’s name out of your fucking mouth!”

Netflix has dropped the full trailer for You People, its upcoming Kenya Barris comedy starring and co-written by Jonah Hill.
The three-minute teaser for Barris’ directorial debut delivers a fuller look at Hill’s character, Ezra Cohen, and his effort to find love, and more specifically, woo Lauren London’s Amira Mohammed in Los Angeles. At the top of the trailer, Ezra reveals to his friend (played by Sam Jay) his desperation to find partnership amid feeling “alone, on a building, dangling my legs off wondering what it’s like to feel companionship.”
“I don’t think I’ve heard of a man ever who wanted to be in a relationship so badly besides Drake,” says Jay.
Enter Amira, who — following an airport rideshare mix-up in which Ezra mistakes her for his actual Uber driver — causes Hill’s character to reveal that he’s “never felt so understood by somebody in my entire life.
