Update, 9 Am Pt: Derek Chauvin’s attorney laid out a defense that will claim that George Floyd died of a host of other factors than the use of excessive force.
Eric Nelson told jurors that Floyd died of cardiac arrhythmia, which he blamed on preexisting conditions of hypertension and coronary disease as well as his use of methamphetamine and fentanyl. He also cited increased levels of adrenaline.
“Common sense is the application of sound judgment based upon a reasoned analysis, and that’s what this case is ultimately about; it’s about the evidence in this case,” Nelson said.
Nelson also said that Chauvin was “doing exactly what he had been trained to do” in the arrest of Floyd.
Previously: Major broadcast and cable networks carried the opening arguments in the trial of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer charged in the death of George Floyd during his arrest in May.

Michael Schur, the creator of “The Good Place” and co-creator of “Parks and Recreation” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” took to Twitter on Friday to pay tribute to television host and his father-in-law Regis Philbin, who died on July 24 at 88.
Not only did the two work in the same industry, but Schur has been married to Philbin’s daughter, J.J. Philbin, since 2005. In a lengthy thread, Schur — who goes by Ken Tremendous on Twitter — detailed the effect his father-in-law has had on his life.
“I’ve never really been able to articulate what his life and career meant. It’s too huge. You can’t wrap your arms around it. He literally holds the Guinness Book Record for most hours on TV.,” Schur wrote. “Luckily, I’ve never really *had* to articulate it, because most people just kind of get it. For decades, Regis was always there, on TV, chatting and complaining and making people laugh.

There’s one specific memory from A League of Their Own that actor Lori Petty carries with her.
Every night, co-star Tom Hanks would move his trailer onto the outfield grass of Wrigley Field in Chicago, the site of the film’s tryout scene, and park it in front of the historic ballpark’s famed ivy wall. The film’s stars cracked beers, took batting practice, and soaked in the big league atmosphere after hours. One evening, Petty, who played Rockford Peaches pitcher Kit Keller, and Hanks were having a casual game of catch when the future Oscar-winning actor paused the throwing session to take in the moment.
“Petty, you know when people go, ‘Remember when?’ That’s this right now,” Hanks said. “This isn’t going to happen again. This isn’t every movie. You’re going to do a lot of movies. This is not going to happen again.

‘Dancing with the Stars’ poll results: The male celeb ‘DWTS’ fans most want to see in season 29 is …
This all-time biggest game show champion was the male celebrity our readers are most eager to see compete on “Dancing with the Stars,” according to our recent poll.
Who is Ken Jennings?
SEEEverything we know about ‘Dancing with the Stars’ Season 29 (so far)
We asked “DWTS” fans to pick from our new list of six suggested male celebs who the show should consider to compete for the next Mirror Ball Trophy, whenever that should be. Season 29 is expected to happen this fall, but with coronavirus spreading across the country it’s hard to be sure about anything in the entertainment industry between now and the end of the year.
It was a close vote, but the “Jeopardy!” champion — who recently won “Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time” against Brad Rutter and James Holzhauer — had the most support with 23% of the vote (scroll down to see the complete results). “Dancing with the Stars...

Sun Valley, Idaho — There’s no fighting the global muscle of the tech giants that are so thoroughly disrupting the traditional media business. That was the early morning wisdom shared Wednesday by Liberty Media chairman John Malone, who spoke to reporters as he headed in for a Q&a at the Allen & Co. conference at the Sun Valley mountain resort.
Malone, a cable industry pioneer and renowned media investor, called the global platforms built by the Faang companies “fabulous” and said they are forcing old-school entertainment companies to adapt their businesses in a huge way.
“They’ve changed the world. They’re the disruptors now. We were the disruptors in our youth,” Malone said, referring to the early days of the cable industry.
“We have to figure out how to position ourselves to adapt to a changing world that they’re changing. You’re not going to fight ‘em.

Exclusive: The travails, injuries and controversies that led the New York Mets to cut ties with one-time can’t-miss pitcher Matt Harvey reminds how rare the career of Mets great Tom Seaver really was. Edward Burns, the Brothers McMullen director who is a lifelong Mets fan, is working with the Hall of Fame pitcher to direct a feature documentary on Seaver’s career and his role with the fabled 1969 Miracle Mets. That was as unlikely as man landing on the moon, the year when a franchise lovable in futility won 100 games and beat the heavily favored Baltimore Orioles to win the World Series.
“Tom has always been one of my idols,” said Burns, a Queens native. “It’s an honor and a thrill to bring his story to the screen as the Mets prepare to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their stunning 1969 World Series championship.”

Spring is here again; at least that’s what the calendar says. And with spring comes baseball, that glorious sport often referred to America’s pastime. As part of this annual spring rite, Sony’s San Diego Studio releases its love letter to the game, and this year’s Mlb: The Show 18 is no exception. Touting one of the biggest year-to-year overhauls in the franchise’s history, The Show 18 delivers a baseball experience like no other game ever has. And for fans, both casual and hardcore, there truly is something for everyone in this year’s edition.
Mlb: The Show 18 has (like previous entries in the series), done a wonderful job recreating the actual sport of baseball. The play control has never been better, and the PlayStation 4 Pro enhancements on display bring the game to life like never before. Gorgeous new menus (centered on your favorite teams), new player animations,...

Nobody could argue that Mark Pellington’s “Nostalgia” isn’t clear about the nature of its concern. From its mournful opening credits to its bittersweet final beat, this strange mosaic — a relatively star-studded melodrama that’s passed from one sad character to another like a baton or a bad cold — is a movie with only one thing on its mind. Of course, there’s nothing inherently wrong with a story that’s so willing to spend itself on a single idea, but nostalgia is maybe too elusive a subject for such close examination.
It’s a universal sensation — memory’s aftertaste. But it’s also one of the most intensely personal feelings we have (or pleasantly suffer through), so difficult to retrace in fiction because it requires a character to have something and lose something at the same time; to be seduced by a shadow for the sole reason that...

About thirty minutes into Nostalgia, a handful of neighbors–each affected by a recent fire–reflect on all of the things they’ve lost. A strangely complacent insurance agent (John Ortiz) sits with them. When asked how he can hear their woes and not appear affected, he explains his everyday encounters with people just like them, who’ve lost everything and are forced to go on and live life. It’s the most interesting moment in the film’s most interesting scene. From here, we follow Ellen Burstyn, playing one of the neighbors, who travels to Las Vegas to sell a Ted Williams-signed baseball that was a prized possession of her late husband’s. There she meets a memorabilia shop-owner (a lovely Jon Hamm), who we then follow. Such is the intersecting structure of the picture, with the second half unfortunately giving way to some tragic melodrama that undermines what’s come before.
