The recording industry may slowly be waking up to the fact that some of its most important creators are wildly undervalued — one sign is the first-ever Songwriter of the Year Grammy, which Tobias Jesso, Jr. recently won for his behind-the-scenes work with Adele, Harry Styles, FKA Twigs, Omar Apollo, and others. But as our recent report on the state of the songwriting business emphasizes, the model for compensating writers is deeply broken. The people we spoke with revealed that in a streaming-dominated world, writing a great song for a major...

Discovering the work of filmmaker Roxy Rezvany has been a recent highlight here at Dn. Last month we spoke to her about her short Photo Booth, which, through a single shot, captures an immigrant couple from 70s London as they navigate the law and each other. It’s a terrific short that through a subtle approach encapsulates these people in all their flaws and strengths. Rezvany takes a similar method to her BIFA nominated short Honesty, a drama that explores the power dynamics at play during a police interrogation of a young woman who’s reporting the domestic abuse of her husband. We won’t spoil any more of the film as it’s a work that thrives on being experienced with little prior knowledge. For now, you can watch the trailer below and follow it up with our spoiler-free conversation with Rezvany which touches upon the construction of the film’s subtle messaging,...

Back in July, electronic music duo Frenship teamed up with vocalist Emily Warren on “Capsize,” a song that would go on to become a viral hit with over 240 million plays on Spotify. Now, Canadian DJ duo Dzeko & Torres have taken on the catchy single for an uplifting remix.
For their “Capsize” remix, Dzeko & Torres pick up the pace to deliver an upbeat re-imagining of the song. A plucky melody kicks the tune off before the familiar vocal hooks enter the mix, layered over a tropical flavored progression. The duo slowly add in light percussion elements, working the energy up as the song moves into the drop. From there, an uplifting melody takes over, layered over bouncy rhythms and crunchy bass.
Compared to the original version of “Capsize,” Dzeko & Torres craft an energetic backdrop with a lighthearted appeal. Utilizing the source material well, the duo dream up a worthy rendition that...

Lost Kings are back with another single, teaming up with vocalist Emily Warren on a new song that aims to tackle our culture’s obsession with electronic devices. Titled “Phone Down,” the duo’s latest effort tells the tale of someone constantly glued to the glow of their smart phone’s screen, jilting their lover along the way.
“Phone Down” sees Lost Kings employing their usual formula, striking a balance between pristine pop hooks and forward thinking dance music. Sonically, the duo fill the song with echoed guitar plucks and smooth trap rhythms with skittering hi hats. Emily Warren’s profanity laden vocals are both soulful and poignant as she spins a narrative about her lover’s incessant phone use, with her singing serving as the single’s primary focus. “Phone Down” features some tremendously catchy choruses, as jaunty piano notes craft an earworm of a melody set against upbeat rhythms.

After premiering it on Sirius Bpm the other day, The Chainsmokers have released their brand new track, titled “Don’t Let Me Down.” Featuring the haunting vocals of 17-year-old singer Daya, the trap-inspired song is primed for radio play, as it’s got a progressive spin on it that lends itself to the a more mainstream audience while still retaining some definite trap elements.
A soft synth lead kicks things off as Daya’s voice takes the spotlight. From there, percussions, claps and hits all slowly build to a drop that falls squarely in trap territory with horns leading the way. Still, even with those sounds making their presence, “Don’t Let Me Down” is far from hard trap, as it’s got a more chill feeling than most songs in the genre, which makes for an interesting twist.
Overall, it’s an exciting departure for Alex and Drew given...

The Chainsmokers dropped a new video for their collaboration with Tritonal on “Until You Were Gone” this week, rolling out a hilariously awkward visual accompaniment for the track that revolves around the DJ duo desperately trying to attract the attention of their fitness trainer.
Sonically, “Until You Were Gone” sees The Chainsmokers continuing the trend of branching out their musical influences and incorporating pop sensibilities into their energetic festival bangers. The song opens with a gentle chord progression joined by Emily Warren’s soulful singing. The verses feature radio friendly vocal hooks and stripped back musical elements, before building up to melodic house drops designed to pack a punch on the dance floor.

It’s been a transformative season for The Chainsmokers, as the NYC-based DJ/producer duo has succeeded in redefining themselves in the wake of their “#Selfie”-indued infamy. 2015 has also seen them collaborate with the likes of Tiësto and Jenaux, and with their latest release, they now get to add Tritonal to the list.
“Until You Were Gone” lives up to The Chainsmokers’ recent repertoire of saccharine love songs, but with Tritonal’s distinctly trancey touch. Emily Warren’s pop-y vocals are counterbalanced by an invigorating complextro drop that sounds quite a bit like something Zedd would produce, making for a infectiously catchy arrangement.
While “Until You Were Gone” is certainly an Edm anthem fit for the main stage, it ends up sounding a bit too generic to stand out in either outfit’s discography. When two groups manage to wow their audience consistently, the downside is that they set...
