Greenland: Migration receives official rating from the MPA
Ric Roman Waugh
Things were seemingly all quiet on the Greenland front. But the sequel to the Gerard Butler disaster film is back on the radar with a little blip. The original Ric Roman Waugh thriller, Greenland, starred Butler and Morena Baccarin and follows a family’s struggle to get to emergency proceedings as they’re selected for shelter from the impending doom of a comet hurling toward our planet. Unlike most disaster films, this story was told from the perspective of everyday citizens simply trying to evade the crazy panic of the population and government proceedings in order to seek refuge.

The sequel — Greenland: Migration — filmed last year, and now, it has received a rating from the MPA. Greenland: Migration will be rated PG-13 for some strong violence, bloody images, and action. Screenwriter Chris Sparling returned to co-write this entry with Mitchell Lafortune. The plot reads, “The Garrity family must leave the...

Lionsgate Snaps Up Hot Action Thriller Spec ‘Renegotiate’ From Mark Townend
Image
Exclusive: In a competitive situation, Lionsgate has landed Renegotiate, a high-concept action-thriller spec by Mark Townend, sources tell us.

The film centers on a troubled FBI crisis negotiator who finds himself stuck in a time loop, re-living the events of a bombing and struggling to stop it before time runs out. Think Source Code meets Phone Booth. Ric Roman Waugh and Brendon Boyea will produce for CineMachine, alongside Brian Kavanagh Jones and Fred Berger for Range, with Aj Bourscheid executive producing.

Townend’s deal is remarkable, we’re told, for a writer with no produced credits, particularly given that the script was taken out without any talent attachments. Sources described the outcome as a three-way bidding war that resulted in a mid-six-figure guaranteed fee against a low-seven-figure purchase/bonus. The script was taken out on the first Monday of April, and by Friday of that week, 20 premium production companies were chasing aggressively.

'The Accidental Getaway Driver' Review: Intimate Crime Noir
Image
The Accidental Getaway Driver skillfully blurs the lines between gritty crime noir and a deeply personal human drama. Based on the article by Paul Kix, an elderly Vietnamese taxi driver is taken hostage after accepting a late-night job. He's thrust into a dangerous situation, but soon establishes a connection with one of his captors that transforms them both. The situation becomes increasingly dubious as everyone involved knows there can be no witnesses. The journey undertaken requires significant patience, but speaks stark truths about the burdens of past sins and confronting our failures with superb cinematography.

In Orange County, California's Little Saigon, Long Mã (Hiệp Trân Nghĩa) sits alone in his small apartment as night falls. He stares out the window as his neighbors play cards before rummaging through an empty fridge. Long decides to get a snack at a nearby supermarket in his striped pajamas. The old man ignores his cell phone,...

Tudo O que Respira (2022)
Here are the Asian titles for Sundance 2023
Tudo O que Respira (2022)
For the last few years, Sundance has had a strong record for premiering Asian titles that would overtake the film festival circuit. Asian diaspora and titles from Asia alike dominated the slate last year, with Indian documentary “All That Breathes” taking home the Grand Jury Prize in World Cinema Documentary; Christine Choy-starring “The Exiles” walking away with the Grand Jury Prize in US Documentary; and Kogonada’s quiet sci-fi “After Yang” winning the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize. Other productions have made a splash on the circuit as well, like the Martika Ramirez Escobar’s stunning debut “Leonor Will Never Die” and Julie Ha and Eugene Yi’s well-researched documentary “Free Chol Soo Lee.” The successes of the previous years have ramped up our own excitement for what is to come in 2023 — which will be, for the first time in the last 2 years, premiere in-person,...

Greenland: Migration Sells at Cannes for $75 Million to STX
Image
Disaster movie sequel Greenland: Migration has greatly avoided, well, disaster at this year's Cannes virtual market. The movie, a follow-up to 2020's Greenland starring Gerard Butler, has now sold its worldwide rights to STXfilms for the huge sum of $75 million, the biggest deal at Cannes this year. STX have reportedly invested $25 million for the domestic rights to Greenland: Migration, while the studio has also purchased the foreign rights for an additional $50 million.

The Greenland sequel reportedly garnered a lot of interest at the virtual market, particularly with indie buyers. However, as usually happens with this kind of blockbuster fare, STX, who distributed the first movie, took advantage of their matching option and will now continue their journey through the apocalypse alongside Butler and director Ric Roman Waugh.

Released in December 2020 after multiple delays amid the ongoing circumstances, the first Greenland begins when scientists make a startling discovery. Fragments of a...

‘Greenland’ Sequel ‘Migration’ Sells To STX In Massive $75M+ Deal At Cannes Virtual Market
Image
Exclusive: In the biggest deal to go down at this year’s Cannes virtual market, STX has beaten out a number of rival bids for worldwide rights to the Gerard Butler action sequel Greenland: Migration.

STX is stumping up around $25 million for domestic rights in a deal cut with Euro producer-seller Anton and CAA Media Finance. Multiple streamers were in the hunt for the movie. STX will also take all of international from Anton in a pact that values foreign at around $50 million.

Anton took the project to the virtual market where it garnered significant interest from indie buyers, but — as often happens on successful franchise fare — STX, which distributed the original movie, had a matching option and was happy to take the plunge. The movie will now run through the studio’s foreign output partners and is being sold to buyers in other markets.
