Dark Sky Films gave the The Third Saturday in October slasher double feature a VOD and digital release back in May, and while we haven’t heard word of a Blu-ray or DVD release yet, the movies have made their way onto the Tubi streaming service… and soon, they’ll also be available on VHS! Which seems very fitting for a pair of movies that are meant to be throwbacks to decades gone by. In addition to the limited run VHS release, both original scores composed by WU10 will be available to stream on all major platforms starting this Friday, October 20th. You can listen to a couple sample tracks in the embeds at the bottom of this article.
Pre-orders of the VHS release can be made through the official website. You can get a standalone The Third Saturday in October VHS, a standalone The Third Saturday in October Part V VHS,...

The titles of these slashers are The Third Saturday in October: Part I and The Third Saturday in October: Part V… and if you think it’s confusing that we’re jumping right from one to five, here’s a little more information on exactly what these films are:
What if a lost horror franchise made during the peak of the slasher genre was unearthed today, but only two of the films could be restored? Filmmaker Jay Burleson imagined just that with The Third Saturday in October.
A double feature of terror, The Third Saturday in October: Part V sees unstoppable killer Jakkariah...

After making The Third Saturday in October Part V, the fifth entry in a non-existent series, what do you do for a follow-up? If you’re writer/director Jay Burleson you make The Third Saturday in October and give your faux franchise a starting point.
After a text crawl telling us what we’re about to see is based on a true story we launch into the story of serial killer Jakkariah “Jack” Harding who we see meeting his fate in the electric chair. Witnessing his execution are Ricky Dean Logan and Vicki Newton both of whom lost loved ones to Harding.
Unfortunately when they go to the cemetery to see him put six feet under they see something much worse.

I primarily associate distributor Dark Sky Films with Adam Green’s Hatchet / Victor Crowley slasher franchise – so it seems very appropriate that the company is now home to the old school style slasher franchise The Third Saturday in October! The two Third Saturday in October films have been making the festival rounds in recent months, and today Dark Sky Films has announced they will be giving them a VOD and digital release on May 5th!

On the JoBlo Movies YouTube channel, we will be posting one full movie every day of the week, giving viewers the chance to watch them entirely free of charge. The Free Movie of the Day we’re getting this week started with is writer/director Aaron Mirtes’ 2019 horror film American Hunt. You can check it out over on the JoBlo Movies YouTube channel, or you can just watch it in the embed at the top of this article.
American Hunt has the following synopsis: A group of friends is torn apart when they become part of two human hunter’s sick game. The men give them ten minutes to hide, and then the real hunt begins.
The film stars Brad Belemjian, David Ditmore, Lacy Hartselle, Taylor Novak, Cris Ruiz, and Allison Shrum.
This group of collaborators must have had a good time making American Hunt together, because Belemjian, Ditmore, and...

[Note: With the film finally getting a UK release, here’s a reposting of my review of Painted in Blood from its US VOD debut]
Director Aaron Mirtes has been slowly plying his trade in the horror genre, making five feature films between 2017 and 2020 one of which, 2019’s American Hunt, was one of the best genre films released that year. Now Mirtes is back with his latest, Painted in Blood and, I’ll be frank, the press materials put me on the wrong foot from the get-go. You see Mirtes has plied his trade on numerous films, most of which you’d consider decent genre fare. From the highs of the aforementioned American Hunt and sci-fi thriller The Alpha Test to more derivative fare like Clowntergeist and Curse of the Nun, Mirtes has crafted a solid resume.
But now he apparently wants to turn his back on more exploitative fare...

A few months back there was some controversy in the horror community when, succumbing to political pressure, Blumhouse cancelled the release of their production The Hunt – which was, essentially, yet another hunting humans film a lal The Most Dangerous Game. Yet whilst Blumhouse cancelled their release, High Octane Pictures went ahead and released American Hunt, a film that features the same hunting humans motif but has less political inclinations.
Of course that’s not to say this film doesn’t have anything to say on the state of society, in fact it says a lot about the divide be the haves and have-nots, the rich and the poor, it’s just that American Hunt can be swept under the carpet by mainstream horror outlets as another low budget direct to market title or,...
