It’s festival season on Snapchat, and the app is joining the crowd with a plethora of filters, Discover content, and geo-located goodies. The fun begins at Coachella, where Snapchat is offering an array of coverage over two weekends.
Snapchat kicked off its Coachella celebration during the weekend of April 13, when the music and arts festival returned to its usual home in the California desert. In-app features designed for concertgoers will continue to be available as Coachella heads into its second weekend, which runs through April 21.
The tentpole includes a curated collection of Stories, which can be found in the Discover tab of the Snapchat app. Geo-fenced filters allow users to share the “fun,” “vibes,” and “fits” they encounter while attending Coachella. Some of those filters will be used in challenges that will run on Spotlight, Snapchat’s TikTok-style format. As per usual, Snap will attach cash prizes to those competitions.

Snapchat‘s been in the short-form game a long time. Maybe that’s why it was so quick to adapt when TikTok started to take over.
In 2021, Snap–like YouTube, Instagram, and even Pinterest–was looking to capitalize on the new fever for short-form brought on by TikTok’s pandemic-time rise to power. It knew it had to (1) get creators to prioritize posting short videos on its platform, and (2) give them a good enough reward for it that they decided to stick around and keep uploading.
To accomplish both goals, Snapchat launched Spotlight, where it paid out a total of $1 million a day to creators whose...

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers from “Looking for Love,” the season finale of FX’s “Dave,” now streaming on Hulu.
Brad Pitt was held hostage, rapped in autotune, shot with an arrow and revealed his “real name” is Luke — all during Wednesday night’s season finale of FX’s “Dave.” In fact, the Hollywood A-lister might bring the underrated dark comedy its first series nom after three seasons.
Playing himself, Pitt will be among the guest acting submissions for the dark comedy, Variety has learned exclusively.
Taking place on a night full of twists and turns, the 46-minute “Looking for Love” episode — directed by Kitao Sakurai and written by Dave Burd and Vanessa McGee — shows Dave being held hostage by a superfan who just wants to “hang out” with Pitt, an actor and aspiring rap star.

Chipotle is proving yet again that it pays close attention to the creator economy.
The burrito brand has been doing deals in our industry–and the digital space as a whole–for years, from partnering with David Dobrik to putting virtual restaurants in Roblox to, most recently, embracing menu “hacks” from TikTokers.
Now, it’s getting in with Twitch and Street Fighter 6.
Starting June 2, Chipotle will join Twitch’s “Super Ultra Combo Week” marking the launch of Street Fighter 6. Up to 500,000 viewers who watch an hour of Street Fighter 6 gameplay from any of 89 participating streamers will get a free order of Chipotle chips and guac.
They’ll also get a 30% discount from Twitch on any item in its Street Fighter apparel collection.

In the history of casual comments that sound like they could mark the end of civilization, there’s a staggering contender in “The New Americans: Gaming a Revolution” — all the more so because it comes from an investor who sounds reasonably intelligent. The movie, the latest documentary provocation written and directed by Ondi Timoner, is about the new era of lone stock traders — many, though not all of them, millennials — who grew up playing video games and now experience investing at home as a literal extension of that thrill-a-minute world. The new trading apps, designed as visual candy, are meant to give you the rush that gamers get (and also the high that people seek out from slot machines). Trying to sum up the lizard-brain appeal of it all, an investor named Mitchell Hennessey explains, “Even if you lose on the trade, confetti pops up, and it almost feels like you’re leveling up.

The latest dining establishment opened by a major influencer is already drawing huge crowds. On November 12, vlogger David Dobrik showed up in Los Angeles to celebrate the opening of his pizza parlor Doughbrik’s, and his fans waited in hours-long lines to get slices for themselves.
Doughbrik’s, which the embattled creator announced last month, is located on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood. According to Ktla, some patrons endured four-hour lines that stretched out of the brand-new establishment. TMZ noted that some opening-day attendees camped out overnight to ensure spots near the front of the queue. Others drove hundreds of miles just to meet the Vlog Squad leader.
“It’s so cliche to say, but it just doesn’t make any sense,” Dobrik told Ktla. “And I know that’s what everyone says, but when you’re here and you’re seeing this, it’s the most crazy feeling in the world.

Two years after its initial reveal, David Dobrik‘s pizzeria is officially coming to Sunset Blvd. The embattled vlogger is breaking ground on Doughbrik’s, which will open its doors on November 12.
In 2020, word spread of Doughbrik’s after the brand’s namesake filed for a punny trademark. An Instagram account for the pizza parlor was launched around that time, though Doughbirk’s has since migrated to a different social media handle.
A lot has happened in Dobrik’s life since he filed for that trademark. He lost most of his sponsorships after a member of his Vlog Squad was accused of rape, and he is now facing a lawsuit from Jeff Wittek. The one-time Vlog Squad collaborator suffered several injuries to his left eye and face while filming a stunt for Dobrik’s channel.
Even though he’s not nearly as influential as he once was, Dobrik still reaches a massive audience.

According to The Daily Beast, which first broke the news and obtained the legal documents, the female plaintiff, 22, says she and the male plaintiff, 15, were both 14 and 7, respectively, at the time of the alleged sexual abuse. The female plaintiff claims Haddish recruited her after she attended a comedy camp where the comedian was a guest speaker.
According to the lawsuit, the female plaintiff claims “Haddish verbally explained what was expected of Plaintiff Jane Doe and then showed Plaintiff Jane Doe how to give fellatio, including movements, noises, moaning, and groaning.” The lawsuit further claims that Spears looked on while she was “physically,...

It’s been a long road for Dispo.
The photo-sharing app launched in 2020 and was a hot commodity right out of the gate. Boosted by the star status of co-founder David Dobrik, Dispo announced 20 million in fresh funding just months after finalizing its seed round.
Then, everything went south. Dobrik was forced to depart the company in disgrace after a member of his Vlog Squad was accused of sexual assault. Investors fled and the app was left to figure out what its Dobrik-less approach would look like. It closed a Series A round in June 2020, but it still had to acquire enough users to regain its momentum.
Then, a funny thing happened: One of Dispo’s rivals handed it a golden opportunity. In July of this year, Instagram drew intense backlash when it started prioritizing short-from videos and planned to switch to a TikTok-style feed. Celebs like Kylie Jenner...

Spotify acquired the audiobook distribution platform Findaway for €117 million, or roughly 122 million at the time of the deal, according to a Thursday filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
The Stockholm-based audio giant first announced it was purchasing the platform, which offers full-service and self-service production for audiobooks, last November. At the time, Spotify’s chief research and development officer, Gustav Söderström, said the deal would “accelerate Spotify’s presence in the audiobook space and will help us more quickly meet that ambition.”
The deal closed on June 15, according to the filing, and Spotify incurred €5 million in acquisition costs. The filing also disclosed that Spotify paid €83 million for the podcast analytic firms Podsights and Chartable in February and €91 million for the AI voice startup Sonantic on July 11.

After two years on hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, VidCon — the annual convention for fans, creators, and online platform industry types — returned to the Anaheim Convention Center last week. But it looked a little different than usual.
For starters, the ear-piercing shrieks of fans lining up to meet their favorite creators were just a little quieter. With 50,000 attendees as opposed to 2019’s 75,000, the convention was somewhat smaller than it previously had been. Further, unlike VidCons of years past, some attendees were wearing masks, albeit an infinitesimally small number among...

VidCon, the marquee gathering for creators and influencers, was poised for a triumphant return to Anaheim after its two-year Covid-19 hiatus. And this year, TikTok — the once upstart platform that skyrocketed during the pandemic to more than 1-billion plus active users — was taking over YouTube’s spot as the conference’s title sponsor, promising the presence of top TikTok creators and an injection of new energy into the 12-year-old conference.
The creator economy has skyrocketed in the past few years, with the market size for consumers spending money on creators projected to grow from 9.8 billion to more than 18 billion, according to an October 2021 report from UTA. And with that growth has come sizable budgets from brands inking lucrative deals with talent and sustained interest from burgeoning creators seeking to monetize their followings and turn their content into a business. In the complaint filed in Los Angeles, Calif., Wittek, 32, said that due to the actions of Dobrik, 25, he has suffered from "wage loss, hospital and medical expenses, and loss of earning capacity." In Wittek's 2021 YouTube docu-series, Don't Try This At Home, the YouTuber shared details behind...

What initially starts as a light-hearted look at YouTube star David Dobrik and his “Vlog Squad” evolves into a portrait that doesn’t quite know what to make of him and his enablers. The question of enablers is a fascinating one: an often symbiotic, sometimes parasitic relationship between co-hosts, fans, content creators, and businesses writing big checks. In happier times, Dobrik was known for his raw personal video blogs that merged into something like Jackass, involving dangerous and somewhat complex stunts without the supervision of lawyers as fellow YouTuber, actor Josh Peck, points out. With his “basic” (also Josh Peck’s words) personality, Dobrik acquired a rabid fanbase of pre-teens, teens, and college students. They like him—even more when he has the capability to instantly grant one young woman’s wish with $15,000, courtesy a dating app that paints itself as the feminist alternative to a well-known hookup service.

David Dobrik, the 25-year-old YouTube superstar, has a grin that speaks a thousand words. Dobrik is the quintessence of cute — eager and baby-faced, with big dark puppy eyes and floppy brown hair combed so that it never seems combed. Clad in sweatshirts that he wears like pajamas, he looks like the comic-strip character Dondi crossed with Mark Wahlberg in 1995 crossed with the world’s smarmiest frat-house douche. When Dobrik grins, his face lights up, but he’s a self-contained firecracker. That grin is a smirk, a freeze-frame guffaw, and a snicker of contempt all at the same time. It’s the look of a class clown, of a kid who can’t believe what he’s getting away with, or of the nicest, most polite office colleague who is also, in case you weren’t looking, the worst corporate backstabber.
David Dobrik, in short, is a dude who looks a lot like America.

This year’s SXSW Film Festival marked the first in-person edition of the Austin gathering in two years, and it was filled with buzz for new movies and crowds eager to embrace them. From opening night entry “Everything Everywhere All at Once” to the meta Nicolas Cage comedy “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent,” SXSW was a satisfying platform for several upcoming releases.

On July 30, 2015, a dough-faced 19-year-old Vine creator named David Dobrik posted his first YouTube video, a five-minute vlog called “Putting A Puppy Into The Microwave!!” Part “Drake & Josh” (minus the adult supervision) and part “Jackass” (minus the corporate oversight), that hyper-active but ultimately adorable clip anticipated the kind of all-caps antics that would elevate Dobrik and his wack pack of Disney Channel-ready edgelords into new media superstars.

David Dobrik was one of the biggest YouTube stars on the planet, a cheery prankster who commanded a vast online following with his so-called “Vlog Squad” and massive brand sponsorship, when everything came tumbling down. After a 2021 Business Insider article detailed the sexual assault allegations against Vlog Squad member Dom Zelaitis, Dobrik’s popularity plummeted, and the drama didn’t end there: That same year, Vlog Squad member Tony Wittek lambasted Dobrik for driving the crane during an ill-fated stunt that left Wittick with major facial injuries and temporary blindness in one eye.
The unraveling of the Dobrik mythos was a jarring reversal of fortune for a face emblematic of modern-day YouTube stardom, and Casey Neistat captured all of it. A prolific Vlogger himself, Neistat started making a movie about Dobrik in 2017, aiming to explore a unique form of 21st century stardom. When Dobrik’s story took a sudden dark turn,...

In early 2019, Casey Neistat began filming “Under the Influence,” about 23-year-old YouTube phenomenon David Dobrik, capturing his evolution from prankster to online celebrity with major brand sponsors and tens of millions of followers across social media platforms. But in 2021, the docu took a turn when a Business Insider story documented sexual-assault allegations by a woman against a former member of Dobrik’s Vlog Squad, Dom Zeglaitis. When the article went viral, Dobrik’s world began to collapse around him and Neistat was there to capture it. The result is a can’t-take-your-eyes-off-it feature docu that sheds light on the social media’s ecosystem and the personalities it perpetuates.

Casey Neistat has made a documentary about fellow vlogger David Dobrik that’s set to appear at SXSW – and the film is already causing controversy before it has even premiered.
While neither creator has promoted the film, which is called Under the Influence, per the SXSW schedule, the 100-minute feature proposes to “capture one of the most precipitous rise-and-falls in the history of the internet...in real-time.” It is set to debut on March 12 at the festival, with an online screening the following morning that will be available worldwide.
The film chronicles two controversies weathered by Dobrik: sexual assault allegations surrounding a former collaborator, and a near-lethal accident in which Vlog Squad member Jeff Wittek incurred serious eye injuries while performing a dangerous stunt.

Roll, a startup whose premise is to give fans a glimpse into the mobile camera rolls belonging to top creators, has caught the eye of David Dobrik, Tana Mongeau, Airrack, Dillon Francis, and Sommer Ray.
It launches today and says its star-studded roster collectively counts 200 million followers across social media. Asked how a relatively unknown startup managed to recruit some of the top digital creators on the web, co-founder Erik Zamudio tells Tubefilter that it mostly onboarded stars via mutual friends, after which interest snowballed.
Roll's four founders met building David's Disposable, Dobrik’s disposable camera-inspired app that evolved into the social platform now known as Dispo. They decline to say why they departed Dispo, and the team is opting to remain anonymous, aside from Zamudio.

The 25-year-old, who counts 18 million subscribers and has been nabbing 35 million monthly views, says, "I haven’t made a dollar off YouTube in like three to four years.”
Dobrik added that he has recently taken meetings about moving his content onto another platform, behind a paywall, notes Dexerto, but he ultimately opted against it. “I just feel like its so f-cked up to charge people,” he explained. “If I make something great, I’m not going to want to put it behind a paywall. Dispo, the photo-sharing startup inspired by disposable cameras, is eyeing a foray into crypto.
Techcrunch reports that the company, which was founded by David Dobrik -- who departed in March amid allegations of rape against a former collaborator -- will soon enable users to sell their photos as NFTs, or non-fungible tokens.
NFTs are digital collectibles that live on a blockchain -- ensuring their uniqueness -- and typically exist as photos, videos, or audio. The medium has become increasingly popular -- and lucrative -- among digital creators in recent months, as a way for fans to own their unique and collectible creations.
Select Dispo users will now see a ‘sell’ button on their photos, and will be notified when the capability formally rolls out. While Nft sales will exist natively within the Dispo app, co-founder and CEO Daniel Liss tells Techcrunch that the company has not finalized which blockchain it will use,...

For several months now, David Dobrik has been back on YouTube, after a damning controversy earlier this year saw him announce a social media hiatus.
And now, the 25-year-old has landed a 10-episode travel series order on nascent streamer Discovery+, which is aptly titled Discovering David Dobrik. Forbes reports that the show will bow later this year and feature other members of Dobrik’s Vlog Squad.
The show will also touch on Dobrik’s status as a Daca recipient, which impeded his travel prospects during the Trump administration, per Forbes. And one episode will see him returning to Slovakia -- where he was born -- for the first time since age six, reuniting with his family on the ground.
