Open Mike Eagle has teamed up with Video Dave and Still Rift to launch their new rap supergroup, Previous Industries. They’re making their two-single debut on Merge Records with “Showbiz” and “Braids.”
Both singles – produced by Child Actor and Quelle Chris, respectively – bring together the long-standing friends and frequent collaborators on a warm, comfortable sound. Although new to the game as a trio, both tracks invite the listener to experience what they’ve been about all along. In “Showbiz,” they declare: “Gather round/ We’re the new fools in town/ And our sounds lay down by the underground.” Pre-orders can be made here.
“Video Dave first met Mike on the campus grounds of Southern Illinois University where an innate creative bond was formed on campus while honing their skills alongside other notable figures Hannibal Buress and Serengeti,” reads a press release on how the group came to be. “Enter Still Rift,...

Danny Brown has dropped his new album, Quaranta, out now via Warp Records. Stream it below via Apple Music or Spotify.
Quaranta means “40” in Italian, and had been teased by the now 42-year-old Brown for years. The 11-track project features appearances from Mike, Bruiser Wolf, and Kassa Overall, with production from The Alchemist, Quelle Chris, frequent collaborator Paul White, in-house Bruise Brigade producer Skywlkr, and more.
The LP was written during the solitude of the pandemic, forcing Brown to look inward as he processed feelings of pain and isolation. In that sense, Quaranta captures how Brown hit rock bottom before spending a lengthy stint in rehab for alcohol and drugs earlier this year.
“There wasn’t too much to do, so it was the best thing for me to do — put everything I was going through into the music,” he said in a statement. “A lot of people make concept albums,...

Since exploding into popular consciousness with XXX, a 2011 masterwork detailing his crazed life of sex, pills, and weed, Danny Brown has served as a lodestone for modern rap’s perilous embrace of hard drugs. The Detroit rapper utilized a manic, strangely hyper cadence seemingly fueled by too much Molly. More importantly, he created music with fearlessness, seemingly unconcerned with how the oft-conservative rap world perceived him. When Edm soared in popularity, he penned Old, a wildly exuberant 2013 valentine to getting wasted as an elderly thirtysomething Mc while collaborating with alt-pop...

Back when he was moving between Washington D.C. and New York City in the late Nineties and early 2000s, billy woods frequented a Black-owned record shop seeking El-p and Cannibal Ox on wax. “I kept coming in, and checking for it — my homie was really diligent about it,” he recalls now. “I got The Cold Vein. I think I got it on CD at the same time, and it was off to the races.” Soon, the success of The Cold Vein and Mf Doom’s Operation Doomsday inspired woods...

New York rapper billy woods and LA producer Kenny Segal have tapped Future Islands singer Samuel T. Herring for “FaceTime,” the lead single from their upcoming collaborative album, Maps.
Over Segal’s wistful, horn-based production, woods describes his life on the road in vivid detail. “They was goin’ off during Playboi Carti set,” he raps. “Now they in the halls partyin’/ Checkin’ they phones, bass shake the walls/ I’m smokin’ alone in a cardigan.”
Herring provides the chorus on the track, singing about the loneliness of touring: “Continental breakfast, stick and weave, tuck and roll/ I can’t take you with me, but I be on your phone.” Stream “FaceTime” below.
“FaceTime” isn’t the first time that the trio of artists have worked together. Back in 2019, Segal produced Back at the House, Herring’s album under his alternative hip-hop moniker Hemlock Ernst. Separately, Herring was featured on woods’ 2017 track “Illegal Tints,...

The methods of expressing and receiving love can be the hardest communication to decipher. At the close of her just-out fourth studio album, Special, Lizzo delivers an ode to all the hopeless romantics who share those hard-to-express feelings by creating playlists and sharing music as a symbolic romantic language.
“Coldplay” lands at the conclusion of an LP that explores love through the lens of self-acceptance, self-sabotage, and the tug-of-war between fantasy and reality. Interestingly, the closing chapter of her journey through self-reflection opens with lyrics written over two decades ago...

Exclusive: Saladin Ahmed (Miles Morales: Spider-Man) has partnered with filmmakers Shaka King (Judas and the Black Messiah) and Travon Free (Two Distant Strangers) to create Drac: Son of Dante—a new, 15-part webcomic series for Tapas Media and Endeavor Content, which is now free to read exclusively via the former company’s website and mobile app. The series’ first two episodes have already launched, with more to come weekly on Fridays.
Drac is said to introduce a new and contemporary mythology around the origins of the iconic goth villain Dracula that will resonate with multicultural and youth audiences alike. The narrative follows Dante, an eerie, flute-playing immortal who finds himself drawn to the human condition against the natural order and better judgment of his species. Dante follows this obsession no matter how much trouble it gets him into — but a conflict for the ages erupts when his monstrous son Drac chooses a human bride.

He’s relapsed, he’s recovered, he’s been revived – and now he’s back, back again (and again). His second album in less than a year, Kamikaze is the latest and most disappointing entry to Eminem’s never-ending encore, a boot camp of knotty, joyless, lumbering ragers aimed largely at a rap game that’s passing him by.
Perfunctorily, he loads reams of names and multisyllabic filler into his random rhyme generator and sets the timer for 46 minutes. The rhymes have more grace and torque than the scream-raps of his last LP,...
