Netflix has renewed The Sandman starring Tom Sturridge as Dream and Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer for a second season. Netflix didn’t confirm the plot or number of season two episodes but did offer this tease of the new season:
“When last we left Dream (Sturridge) and his friends and foes, the forces of hell were on the move, led by Lucifer themself (Christie). The new episodes of the series will dive into that conflict and continue to explore the many challenges facing the universe in the wake of Morpheus’ century-long absence.”
The series is based on the popular DC comic series written by Neil Gaiman and was developed by Gaiman, David S. Goyer, and Allan Heinberg. All three are involved as writers and executive producers, with Heinberg also guiding the series as showrunner.

“The Sandman” is returning to Netflix. The streaming platform has officially renewed the Neil Gaiman series based on the DC Comics universe, expanding the franchise with new episodes based on other stories from the graphic novels.
Leading up to Wednesday’s evening announcement, there was rampant speculation among Netflix subscribers about whether “The Sandman” would be renewed or was even canceled, despite its success, even leading Gaiman to dispute a tweet from a fan account online. And while Netflix has renewed “The Sandman,” it’s not exactly coming back for a Season 2, as the show will focus on other aspects of the conflict between Dream and the forces of Hell, exploring the many challenges facing the universe in the wake of Morpheus’ century-long absence. The number of episodes and all plot specifics have been kept under wraps to this point.

If you've been suffering through the nightmare of Netflix no longer acknowledging the existence of "The Sandman," then you're in luck. Netflix has reportedly renewed the Neil Gaiman adaptation for a second season, according to insiders at Deadline. These reports come after DC Comics deleted a tweet regarding its renewal earlier today.
Needless to say, this is pretty exciting. Even though the first season of "The Sandman" had a few translation issues from page to screen, it was brimming with potential. It is clear from the show's writing that the team, headed up by showrunner Allan Heinberg, truly understood the stories they were adapting. Not only that, but the writing was brought to life by a cast that wasn't just sleepwalking their way through their characters.
Having it get another season will allow them to iron out the kinks, thus potentially resulting in the best Gaiman adaptation we've gotten yet.

The Netflix adaptation of Neil Gaiman's "The Sandman" has managed to do what was considered impossible. The live-action series embraces the larger-than-life aspects of Gaiman's intricate saga while creating a compelling episodic structure that works in its favor. Apart from boasting a stellar cast who assume the roles of diverse characters from Gaiman's source material, "The Sandman" is also beautiful to look at, thanks to its committed visual effects team.
/Film spoke to Ian Markiewicz, who worked as VFX supervisor on "The Sandman," in a soon-to-be-published interview. Per Markiewicz, the show tried its best to recreate panels from the comics whenever it worked best for the narrative, and the Gates of Horn, which can be seen in "Sleep of the Just," featured "a bunch of material from "The Sandman: Overture." He said:

Neil Gaiman was seen getting chummy with all the actors who brought his characters to life on the red carpet of The Sandman, a Netflix series based on his acclaimed comic books which will release on August 5.
The show had its World Premiere in London at BFI Southbank.
From left to right, Allan Heinberg, Vivienne Acheampong, Gaiman, Tom Sturridge, Gwendolyn Christie and Vanesu Samunyai were gathered here for this photo op. Sturridge will star in the series as Morpheus, king of the land of Dreaming who has to restore his world to order after over a century in captivity.
The Sandman is finally seeing the light of day after being stuck in “Development Hell,” since ideas for an adaptation were first discussed way back in 1991.

The Netflix adaptation of The Sandman has been long anticipated both by early fans of the DC comic and by those who have come to enjoy the many wonderful Neil Gaiman televised offerings, from Good Omens to American Gods. But even with the inherent appeal of the classic comic and its creator, there’s something thrilling about recognizing an actor that’s been cast in a key role from other work that they’ve done, especially if it happens to be genre fare that makes them seem particularly suited for their part.
The cast of The Sandman includes many fresh faces that will no doubt become more recognizable as the series gains an audience. But below are some of the more seasoned actors that viewers will instantly recognize and get excited about seeing in their new roles.

Warning: The following contains spoilers for Netflix’s “The Sandman,” Episode 4 “A Hope in Hell”
Throughout much of Netflix’s series adaptation of “The Sandman,” the show argues that nightmares, and the fear and immorality that haunt them, are more common and representative of humanity than anything else. Yet in the show’s fourth episode, “A Hope in Hell,” a counterargument that encapsulates “Sandman’s” central theme is delivered in ambitiously creative fashion.
Our hero Morpheus (Tom Sturridge) is locked into an epic metaphysical and idealogical duel with Lucifer (Gwendoline Christie), where each one takes on a new form be it beast, man (hunter), biological killers (bacterium), or even celestial powers (life-nurturing worlds and planet-killing novas).
But with Morpheus on the verge of losing this fight, his raven Matthew (Patton Oswalt) bluntly tells him that “Dreams don’t f—ing die, not if you believe in them.” This inspires our...

How do you adapt the unadaptable? Neil Gaiman’s beloved fantasy comic book The Sandman centers around Dream, a godlike embodiment of humankind’s collective unconscious who looks like he might also sing in a Cure cover band. Its cerebral tales leap among eras and settings, including multiple pit stops in the actual depths of hell, and rarely, if ever, indulge in anything even vaguely like superheroic action. After numerous attempts to make a movie version of the comic-book series (which ran from 1989 to 1996), The Sandman has finally found a...

After years of development, “The Sandman” has arrived. Neil Gaiman’s beloved graphic novel series now exists as a Netflix series, with Gaiman serving as co-creator and executive producer on the show. Many fans weren’t sure if this day would ever come given how difficult Gaiman’s books are to adapt, with “The Sandman” at one point planned as a movie to be directed by and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Tom Sturridge fills the titular role in this iteration of the story, which finds Dream imprisoned for a century and busting out to find his kingdom in ruins. He then sets out on a journey that puts him in contact with friends and foes alike, learning to better understand humanity in the process.

The Sandman, Netflix’s long-awaited adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s comics, starts “in the waking world, which humanity insists on calling the ‘real’ world, as if your dreams have no effect upon the choices you make,” the main character, Morpheus, tells us at the top of the series’ premiere.
As we watch a raven follow a horse-drawn carriage and then fly off to another, otherworldly realm, Morpheus — aka Dream, aka Lord of The Dreaming, aka King of Dreams, aka about a zillion other names — adds, “There is another life that awaits you when you close your eyes and enter my realm.

Of all the graphic novel adaptations to hit the small screen this year, “The Sandman,” based on the Neil Gaiman and Sam Keith series published by DC Comics’ now defunct Vertigo imprint, is one of Netflix’s most anticipated. Spanning seven years and 75 issues, the Sandman universe chronicles The Endless, a dysfunctional family of siblings that anthropomorphize Delirium, Desire, Despair, Destiny, Destruction, Death, and Dreams.
The first season of Netflix’s “The Sandman” primarily focuses on Morpheus, The King of Dreams (Tom Sturridge), his attendants, Lucienne (Vivienne Acheampong), the librarian who catalogs all of human existence, and Matthew (Patton Oswald), a talking raven. He serves as Dream’s eyes and ears in the waking world. However, when Morpheus unexpectedly disappears, leaving the Dreaming unattended for a century, his realm and humanity are left vulnerable.

In an episode of Netflix’s new drama The Sandman, two characters discuss a shared fondness for the works of William Shakespeare. One of them objects to a recent King Lear production that drastically altered the story, while the other assures him, “The great stories will always return to their original forms.”
The latter sentiment is the key to understanding both the assets and challenges of making a TV series out of a comic book long held as one of the medium’s greatest, but also one of its most unadaptable.

At one point in The Sandman, a 400-year-old Englishman (Ferdinand Kingsley) casually eviscerates a recent production of King Lear. “The idiots had given it a happy ending,” he scoffs. His conversation partner, Dream (Tom Sturridge) — as in, the physical manifestation of the concept of dreaming, and ruler of the impossible realm we travel to when we drift off to sleep — is less bothered. “That will not last,” he predicts sagely. “The great stories will always return to their original forms.”
The Sandman will require no such dramatic reversion to form. Executive produced by the comics’ creator, Neil Gaiman (alongside Allan Heinberg and David S. Goyer), the fantasy drama is nothing if not respectful of its source material. What the exchange about King Lear misses, however, is the way updated versions of great stories can be what keep them feeling fresh and relevant in the first place.

“The Sandman” series, adapted from Neil Gaiman’s 1989 comic series — co-created by Sam Keith and Mike Dringenberg — will creep into consciousness in the first week of August. The ten-episode series follows the story of The Dream King Morpheus, a powerful being aiming to correct past mistakes he made, both cosmically and more minutely.
Names behind the television interpretation of the DC comic include Allan Heinberg as showrunner, executive producer and writer, as well as David S. Goyer and Neil Gaiman as executive producers and writers. Many minds have combined to produce a series that walks between dream and waking worlds.
Fans of the comic, Gaiman and/or the sprawling ensemble cast may be wondering how to watch the haunting story, and the answers are pretty simple.

After several years supporting herself as a primary school teacher between acting roles, Acheampong hit that professional stride in 2019 as a regular on the BAFTA-winning sketch comedy show Famalam, and recently appeared at London’s Royal Court Theatre in Aleshea Harris’ revenge drama Is God Is. Next, she stars in the Netflix series The Sandman.
