Castlevania: Nocturne Fans Need To Check Out This Classic Anime
Image
There's a lot to love in Netflix's animated "Castlevania" shows. Based on the hit video game franchise of the same name, the sharply animated shows feature a fun alternate history to our own, where real-world events have been altered by the inclusion of supernatural beings like vampires and demons. There are some truly great characters with a lot of charm, some fantastically tragic antiheroes, and some good old-fashioned blood and gore. The sequel series, "Castlevania: Nocturne," has done well for the streamer, continuing the story set forth in "Castlevania" and setting up one of the best storylines in the whole saga, "Symphony of the Night."

But even if Netflix inexplicably gives "Castlevania" the axe (or stake), there's great news for fans who just can't get enough of vampires, alternate history, amazing animated violence, and guys named Alucard, because there's a classic anime franchise that contains all of those things: "Hellsing.

Kouta Hirano Net Worth – How Much Money Did He Make from Hellsing and Drifters
Image
Kouta Hirano is a celebrated manga artist who created Hellsing and Drifters, both incredibly popular and critically acclaimed in the anime world. The underrated success of these two is unmatched and this was the man behind them. The mangaka has an estimated net worth of $1 million to $5 million.

The Hellsing author’s wealth stems from the popularity of these two manga series, which have been adapted into successful anime series, and naturally, their associated merchandise. His rise in the manga industry started with Hellsing, which quickly gained a global following and secured his place among the elite manga creators.

Hellsing Creator Kouta Hirano Admitted He Created 1 Character Just to Rival Alucard as the Rest of Them Were “Too Weak”
Image
It has been more than two decades since the original Hellsing anime premiered. Kouta Hirano began serialization in 1997 and was adapted into an anime in 2001. The first anime only had 13 episodes, and Hellsing: The Dawn had ten episodes. All ten episodes were around an hour long, and the episodes were produced by separate animation studios.

One of the best things about Hellsing is Alucard, the first and strongest vampire to ever live, who is a sworn protector of the Hellsing. The mangaka created him as the most dominant force in his story. At one point, there was no one left to challenge, and Hirano had to introduce another powerful character to rival the vampire.

“Wow, I’m really famous”: Japanese or Overseas Fans? Hellsing Creator Kouta Hirano Revealed Who’s More Excited to Meet Him
Image
Kouta Hirano excelled in blending gore with comedy bits with Hellsing. This peculiar blend of such different elements have appealed to many fans all over the world. During the early 2000s, when Hellsing was still being published, anime wasn’t as mainstream as it is today. There were few anime that were successful enough to reach the fans overseas.

With its striking visuals, Hellsing garnered international attention. Even today, the series enjoys a dedicated fanbase that is always on the lookout for Hirano’s new works.

Hellsing balances extreme violence and horror with brief amusing bits. The manga is more stylish than what is considered normal and the characters stand out for their elaborate character designs. What appealed to fans primarily was the visual aspect, followed by Hirano’s ability to keep things intense, and then suddenly...

The 5 Best Dracula Comics, Ranked
Image
Count Dracula made his debut in Bram Stoker's 1897 novel but the Count's presence on the silver screen has been just as vital in making him a horror icon. Bela Lugosi, Sir Christopher Lee, Gary Oldman, and Nicolas Cage are just a few of the actors who've played Dracula. With the dozens of Dracula movies out there, what's the cream of the crop? We've got you covered with /Film's choices for the best Dracula movies.

But the vampire lord's adventures don't end at movies; he is just as much a creature of the funny books. He's quite similar to Frankenstein's Monster that way, who has also starred in plenty of comics. Dracula has faced superheroes on both sides of the Marvel/DC divide, from Batman to Wolverine (rapid healing blood is the most delicious).

Argentinian cartoonist Alberto Breccia turned Dracula into a gothic comedy bravely satirizing the fascist Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet.

Turn of the Century: The Classic Anime Getting Modern Makeovers
Image
A certain meme sprung to mind when I awoke to last week’s double-whammy of old-school anime remake news. It’s that panel from a Watchmen comic where Dr. Manhattan sits pensively in isolation on the surface of Mars and is usually made to lament how time is a flat circle, a recent example of which remarked on Ghostbusters and Dune competing at the box office in three separate instances since 1984. Anime is hardly different from other mediums when it comes to rebooting or remaking older material for newer audiences, though it's arguably been slower to dig deeper for inspirations. In the last couple of years, we’ve mostly seen updates of adaptations that originate from the early 2000s or late '90s like Fruits Basket , Trigun , Shaman King , Spice and Wolf , Bartender , Tokyo Mew Mew , Forest of Piano , Orphen and so forth. A few recent exceptions include Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai...

“They never restrict me”: Hellsing Author Got an Advantage with His Publishers Even Masashi Kishimoto Only Dreamed to Get
Image
Creative freedom is one of the biggest advantages any manga creator can get. It would not only help them write the manga according to their imagination but also remove any kind of restriction that hinders their work. And while most manga creators don’t have this freedom, Hellsing’s author, Kouta Hirano, was lucky enough to receive it.

Hellsing | Gonzo Studio

Hellsing is a complicated dark fantasy story involving vampires and Nazis and focusing on the protection of England from other mystical elements. The story featured some grim moments that ideally should have been a topic of discussion, but Shônen Gahosha, the publishing house for Hellsing, allowed them as they never restricted Hirano.

Hirano once revealed that he was lucky enough to work with Gahosha, as it helped him portray the story of Hellsing in the exact way he wanted, which is a big deal for him considering it was one of his early works.

Explore the frustration of romance with Hirano and Kagiura's slow-burn relationship dynamics and emotional turmoil. Dig deep into self-reflection with characters who analyze their feelings and motivations, refreshing LGBTQ+ representation. Appreciate the mature, dramatic tone of Hirano and Kagiura, contrasting with the sweetness of Sasaki and Miyano in Bl manga.

Bl anime has become more mainstream recently, thanks to some widely acclaimed series like Given and The Stranger By The Shore. A particularly sweet story, Sasaki and Miyano, quickly gained international popularity when it aired in 2022. Its sequel movie, Sasaki and Miyano: Graduation, was released along with a short film that adapted bits of the authors other manga series: Hirano and Kagiura. The stories are parallel and share some characters and events, but they are also significantly different.

“Every character was too weak”: Kouta Hirano Created One Character in Hellsing Only to Give Alucard Some Competition
Image
Kouta Hirano’s Hellsing has done wonders for the dark fantasy vampire genre, and most of its credit goes to its main character, Alucard. Deemed one of the strongest characters in the history of anime and manga, Alucard has remained undefeated in the entire series and has served the Hellsing organization in dealing with vampires and other supernatural forces.

Hellsing by Kouta Hirano | Gonzo Studio

While there were many villains introduced in the story, none of them were able to defeat Alucard because of the plethora of powers and abilities that he possessed. From shapeshifting to dark composition, Alucard is filled with strong attacks that can’t be rivaled by anyone. However, there was only one character who came close.

His name was Alexander Anderson, and he was a prominent member of the Iscariot organization, also known as Vatican Section 13. Hirano once revealed that he introduced Section 13 and Anderson...

Dune Villain Baron Harkonnen Had A Bizarre Anime Cameo
Image
Director Denis Villeneuve's "Dune: Part Two" is lighting the world on fire right now, much like Paul Muad'Dib's (Timothee Chalamet) jihad will be doing to the known universe after the movie's end. The sequel enjoyed a box office debut twice as big as the first "Dune" did in 2021. Unlike was the case with David Lynch's 1984 "Dune," which earned too little for sequels, it seems that Warner Bros. now has its next blockbuster franchise.

From the Worms to the Spice (which the movies hardly explain), the world of "Dune" is quite weird. One of this bizarre iceberg's tips is the villainous Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, leader of the Harkonnen feudal house. Played in the recent movies by Stellan Skarsgård, the Baron is about 600 pounds (reflecting his gluttonous wealth) and to get around, he doesn't walk, he floats with anti-gravity belts. Frank Hebert's original "Dune" books were an influence on...

Demon Slayer Fans See Tanjiro and Zenitsu in Louis Vuitton's New Designs
Image
The new Louis Vuitton Men’s Spring Summer collection is going viral among anime fans for its striking resemblance to several Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba characters.

Via SoraNews 24, the new Louis Vuitton collection, created under the direction of musician and rumored anime fan Pharrell Williams, has released several bags and apparel items nearly identical to Tanjiro Kamado’s signature over-kimono haori pattern. Its classic damier (meaning "checkerboard" in French) pattern and Tanjiro’s ichimatsu ("check-patterned" in Japanese) have the obvious print similarity, but the unique shade of green used in the collection is essentially also a dead-on match for Tanjiro’s haori. Fans on both X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit have been pointing out the similarities, especially in the Christopher Mm backpack, priced at $3,700 Usd.

Hunter X Hunter Is Still Unmatched In One Aspect More Than A Decade Later
Image
Hunter X Hunter is widely considered one of the best anime due to its exceptional music composition and sound design. The timing and use of silence in the series' composition evokes the exact emotions the scenes aim to portray. The narrator's incredible voice and explanation of important details make the narration one of the standout aspects of the series.

Hunter X Hunter is highly regarded as one of the best anime of all time, and the things it does right far outnumber its occasional pitfalls. A shining example of a remake executed perfectly, the series is still undefeated when it comes to music composition and sound design, even after many years since the anime ended.

The 2011 version of Hunter X Hunter has been universally praised for its magnificent use of music, sound effects, and narration, which heightened the most epic moments of the series.

Anime Review: Baki Hanma: Son of Ogre Season 2 (2023) by Toshiki Hirano
Image
Right when you thought that the Netflix adaptation of one of the most cult anime titles could not stoop any further, here comes the second season of the “Son of Ogre” arc to ruin the franchise even more. Even worse, the first part gave some hope about the finale of the season, only to drown any expectation in deep ridiculousness. Let us take things from the beginning though.

As teased in the previous season, the authorities discover a man from the dinosaur era who has been frozen for millions of years. They defrost him, and it turns out that he is a tremendous fighter, who was able to fight the dinosaurs and win. In the pedantic, buffoonish style of humor that unfortunately characterizes the whole series, they name him Pickle, while expectedly, the rest of the renowned fighters of the series,...

Baki Hanma Season 2: Plot, Cast, Release Date, and Everything Else We Know
Image
For a long time, anime shows have been praised for their ability to capture complex topics like martial arts down to their essence. There have been several action anime series over the years that have succeeded in every way possible, giving viewers an exhilarating experience. Shows like Naruto, The God of High School, Dragon Ball, and Hajime no Ippo are among the finest examples. However, even amid these strong contenders, there remains an underdog: the Baki franchise.

Baki Hanma is based on a Japanese manga written and illustrated by Keisuke Itagaki. After the manga ran for eight years straight, from 1991 to 1999, various anime shows were released, including Baki the Grappler and Baki Hanma. With the first season, "Baki Hanma: Son of Ogre," being released in September 2021, delivering the franchise's trademark relentless action, many fans were expecting a second season of the highly successful anime. An Electric Selection of Early, Shot on Film Shorts & Features From Some of Japan’s Most Daring Directors

Metrograph presents Hachimiri Madness: Japanese Indies from the Punk Years, an electric showcase of restored early works from some of Japan’s boldest filmmakers, beginning December 2, 2022 at Metrograph in Theater.

At the same time that the Japanese studios were going into tailspin decline at the end of the 1970s, a rude burst of amateur cinematic anarchy was erupting from the underground. This new jishu eiga, or “autonomous film,” was a cinema by and for outsiders, many of them shooting run-and-gun-style in the streets on cheap 8mm film (hachimiri in Japanese). The jishu film movement, which found a home after 1977 at the Pia Film Festival in Tokyo, was the cinematic analog of the experiments in extreme independent music happening in Japan at the same time, and would act as the incubator...
