After 23 years in engineering and management, Kurtis Changed careers to become a filmmaker in 2013. Kurtis graduated from Motion Picture Institute of Michigan in 2014 and immediately began working in the independent film industry in Detroit. He worked on five full-feature films until the Michigan tax incentives stopped. Starting in 2016, Kurtis began doing his own independent work by directing and producing short films for two years. In 2018, he co-edited The Great American Family, a full feature documentary. After that project was completed, Kurtis began directing and producing his own full feature documentary, an exhaustive two year film that deals with over 100 years of immigration of his people who are called Chaldean, who are the majority of the Iraqi Christians that have been leaving the middle east for the west as well as Europe and Australia. His documentary is set to be completed in late 2019.
