If we know anything, it’s that Viking movies and shows can certainly fit into many genres but if we are talking about it seriously, Vikings on its own is a separate genre because there is a different feel to any Viking-related movie or show that can only come from this specific genre. So, if you like Vikings-related movies or shows here are the absolute best movies and shows you can find on Netflix right now.

“The Last Kingdom” is ready for its last run.
With the debut of the feature-length film “Seven Kings Must Die” on Netflix on April 14, the epic series is wrapping up, with the fifth and final season having aired on Netflix in March 2022.
The film serves as a fitting send off to the series, which is based on the Bernard Cornwell novel series “The Saxon Stories.” Like the books, the show follows the fictional character Uhtred (played by Alexander Dreymon), a Saxon who was captured and raised by Danish invaders in England in the ninth century A.D. Uhtred is raised to live the life of a viking, but destiny puts him in the employ of the House of Wessex and King Alfred, who seeks to unite the disparate kingdoms into one country called England.

Seven Kings Must Die concludes the story of Uhtred Ragnarsson, a decades-long frenemy of the English crown since the days of King Alfred the Great. It’s largely adapted from Bernard Cornwell’s final instalment in his Saxon Stories books, War Lord, along with elements of the two previous novels, and tracks the contested succession to the royal throne following the death of King Edward.
A significant time jump has taken place since the final moments of The Last Kingdom season five, during which Aelswith, Hild and Eadith have all passed or moved away. A core of male characters remains though, including Uhtred, Finan, Sihtric, Father Pyrlig and Aldhelm. They’re joined by brand new characters, as below.
Laurie Davidson as Ingilmundr
The biggest addition to The Last Kingdom’s regular cast is Aethelstan’s new trusted advisor, Ingilmundr, a Danish-born Christian who shows a powerful influence over King Edward’s successor.

Eliza Butterworth is an actress we’ve had the pleasure of speaking to a couple of times already, but given the rising star’s affability, not to mention talent, with an array of wonderful characters she now has to her name, we’re always happy to catch up once again. We’re especially keen to do so to mark the release of new crime series A Town Called Malice, which takes South London to the Costa del Sol. When we spoke to Butterworth last week we spoke about her experiences shooting the show in Spain, and what it was like spending time alongside none other than Martha Plimpton, a performer we of course hold dear to our hearts thanks to her role in The Goonies.
We also look back across Butterworth’s time spent on The Last Kingdom, and what it felt like for her to have sadly missed the...

2023 is going to be a year of long-awaited drama treats on UK TV. There’s the Luther film finally arriving on Netflix in March, Unforgotten is back after that Series 4 finale in 2021, and we’re getting the second season of Good Omens that has had the shows’ many enthusiastic fans on the edge of their seats for two years.
There are even whispers of a Line of Duty return, although Martin Compston has said that nothing is confirmed, so we’re not exclaiming ‘Jesus, Mary and Joseph and the wee donkey!’ just yet.
It’s also a year of dramatic goodbyes: Happy Valley returned for its third and final series on New Year’s Day, Endeavour will wrap up after over a decade of detective work, and 2023 might also squeeze in the sixth and final season of The Crown.
This is our roundup of the British TV shows we’re...

If you love the 1980s – specifically, the neon-lit, Talking Heads-blaring, Delboy swagger of the 1980s Cockney – then Sky’s new crime thriller A Town Called Malice is right up your street.
Meet the Lords
Created by The Sweeney’s Nick Love, this eight-part drama centres on the Lord family, a South London gang whose criminal heyday might be behind them, but who are still up for causing trouble. After a spot of bother with a rival gang (and leaving a policeman for dead), they flee to Spain’s Costa del Sol to lay low, and in amongst the pina coladas and palm trees realise they have a chance to recapture their former glory and become criminal top dogs once more.
The series premiered on Sky Max at 9pm on Thursday 16th March, and the full box-set is already available to watch on Now.
Who’s in the cast of A Town Called Malice?...

Sky has launched the teaser trailer for its upcoming crime thriller series ‘A Town Called Malice.’
This intoxicating cocktail of crime thriller and family saga in the early ’80s follows the Lords – a family of former South London gangsters who’ve fallen to the bottom of the criminal food chain – and they’re not happy about it. When they flee to the Costa del Sol in Spain following a gangland battle, the Lords realise this is a golden opportunity to re-invent themselves and re-capture their former glory. However, they spend as much time battling each other as they do their opponents. This high-octane, neon Western is a musical love letter to the ’80s – filled with romance, obsession, violence, deceit, and swagger.

“Everyone has died!” says Emily Cox, in some shock. “From season one [of The Last Kingdom], it’s just Eliza, Alex and me. Everyone else has gone!” We’re speaking on Zoom in July 2021, a month after filming wrapped on the final season of the Netflix action drama, and Cox hasn’t had much time to reflect. She went straight from playing warrior Brida to a lead role on feature film Alma & Oskar, even having to miss the wrap party with her beloved Last Kingdom co-stars.
To be one of only three original cast members still standing at the start of the last season (alongside Alexander Dreymon’s lead Uhtred and Eliza Butterworth’s pious Lady Aelswith) clearly means a lot. Cox talks about the character of Brida with affection and compassion – no easy task for a character capable of such sadism. In season five, Brida is Uhtred’s enemy. But...

Do you know what The Last Kingdom needed? More characters with names that look like an unlucky hand at Scrabble. Or at least, somebody must have thought so because that’s who’s joining the existing gang for the action-adventure’s final season before the saga ends with film Seven Kings Must Die. Below, meet Rognvaldr, Eadgifu, Vibeke, Cynlaef, plus the newly aged-up versions of existing characters Aelfweard, Aethelstan, Aelfwynn and more.

Eliza Butterworth talks charting dangerous seas in The North Water & The Last Kingdom’s final season
To celebrate the release of The North Water, which begins on BBC Two this week, we sat down with star Eliza Butterworth to find out about the treacherous seas of the new show.
The North Water tells the story of Patrick Sumner (Jack O’Connell), a disgraced ex-army surgeon who signs up as ship’s doctor on a whaling expedition to the Arctic. Onboard he meets Henry Drax (Colin Farrell), the harpooner, a brutish killer whose amorality has been shaped to fit the harshness of his world. Butterworth plays Hester in the show and tells us about the dangerous nature of the show, working with Farrell, O’Connell, and director Andrew Haigh (45 Years), her character, and the success of the show after its US debut earlier this summer.
We also spoke about the final season of The Last Kingdom, which is leaving our screens after five hugely successful seasons. Playing Lady...

It's the end of the line for another Netflix series.
Deadline is reporting that the streamer has announced the upcoming fifth season.
Alexander Dreymon, who plays Saxon warrior Uhtred of Bebbanburg, said in a statement, “Playing Uhtred for five seasons has been a wonderful journey.”
Added EP Nigel Marchant: “With such a loyal fanbase, we’re excited to give viewers a chance to follow Uhtred on the next stage of his epic quest, where not everyone survives.”
News of the conclusion means that Bernard Cornwell's Saxon Stories novel series will not be fully adapted since the fifth season is said to be based on the ninth and tenth books in the 13-pear series.
The good news for fans is that the final season is currently in production, so there should be some semblance of a conclusion when it's all said and done.

The Last Kingdom Season 4 Episode 9
And that, Edward, is exactly what Sigtryggr was talking about. Anger is not a battle plan. Storming red-faced up to the locked gates of a well-stocked, well-defended city and screaming “Do you surrender?” while your men drop like swatted flies is madness. Did you learn nothing about military strategy from your father? What was the number one rule? Always. Ask. Uhtred.
Uhtred is a changed man at this end of the season. Where once he’d have been scaling Winchester’s walls with a dagger between his teeth and vengeance in his heart, he’s learned that impetuousness leads to loss. It’s a lesson Edward sorely needs.
King Edward isn’t coming off well in season four. Two episodes ago, it looked as though he’d sloughed off his immaturity and taken on his father’s true mantle,...

When it came to the true parentage of Aethelflaed of Mercia’s daughter Aelfwynn, The Last Kingdom tore up the history books and introduced some Danish blood into the royal line…
When Aethelflaed (Millie Brady) was a teenager, her parents betrothed her to the self-styled king of Mercia, Lord Aethelred (Toby Regbo). The match was intended to mirror that between her parents – King Alfred of Wessex and Lady Aelswith of Mercia (David Dawson and Eliza Butterworth) – and shore up the political alliance between the two kingdoms in pursuit of Alfred’s ultimate dream of a single united England.
A cruel husband
On their wedding night, Aethelred proved himself a cruel husband who physically and sexually abused his young wife. Aethelflaed’s sense of royal duty and the political importance of the Wessex-Mercian alliance kept her from fleeing, and she vowed that whatever she had to suffer, her husband would not break her.

Eliza Butterworth, who has played the character since Season 1 of the critically-acclaimed series, spoke with Variety ahead of the premiere about how Aelswith has to adapt in this new world.
Aelswith really wielded her influence through Alfred, but with him gone, where is she at the beginning of this season?

With King Alfred gone and her children forging their own paths, Aelswith is without allies at precisely the time she needs them the most.

The Last Kingdom season 4 episode 2
Ptang, squelch. And that’s it for Aelfric. After decades of enmity, the much-hyped showdown between uncle and nephew ended with a single crossbow bolt fired by neither one of them. What’s the term for that? Premature gratification? It’s the result we all wanted, but over too quickly.
The Last Kingdom has never been one to take its time. Chomping through two books a season, it’s a galloping kind of show, riding the length and breadth of the country with its sword held aloft, screaming through chapters as it goes.
Emotional turnarounds tend to happen quickly or off-screen, or not at all. As yet, we have no idea why Aelfric banished his son and why Wihtgar returned to kill him. All the better to surprise us with. More context though – even a single scene between...

Filming has commenced on the fourth season of The Last Kingdom for Netflix, the hit historical drama based on Bernard Cornwell’s best-selling novel series The Saxon Stories.
Alexander Dreymon reprises his role as Uhtred, joined by new cast Stefanie Martini who takes on the role of Eadith, Aethelred’s new love conquest, and Aethelred’s new right-hand man Eardwulf, played by Jamie Blackley.
After the death of Alfred, the alliances between the kingdoms are fractured. Uhtred believes the timing is right to challenge his uncle Aelfric, played by Joseph Millson, and take back his ancestral home, Bebbanburg. However fate shifts in a different direction, leading Uhtred to realize that his destiny is tied to Alfred’s dream of a united land. This, and Uhtred’s feelings for Aethelflaed, drive him back into the politics that threaten to break out into war.
Returning cast includes Ian Hart (Father Beocca), Toby Regbo...

Season three delivers yet another strong episode themed around the cultural and religious clash at the center of this show. Spoilers…
As The Last Kingdom is now a Netflix-only deal, we're reviewing the new series an episode a day. Please keep spoilers for future episodes out of the comments. Destiny is all!

The Last Kingdom Season 3 Episode 8
No abbesses were harpooned in the making of episode eight. There were no big bloody battles, squares formed or shield walls raised. The conflict in this installment was all theological, drawn from The Last Kingdom’s fundamental clash between Christianity and Paganism.
This far down the line, that cultural and religious battle is no longer embodied solely by Uhtred, the born Saxon raised a Dane. It’s a richer theme now, also enacted in Alfred and Aelswith’s discord, and Thyra and Beocca’s marriage.

More of Uhtred’s bridges are burned as he battles with where his true loyalties lie. Spoilers ahead in our review…

The Last Kingdom Season 3 Episode 3
“The world is in crisis,” says Uhtred in the episode three ‘previously on’. He’s not wrong. From the vantage point of November 2018, the idea of separate kings governing the Midlands, Somerset and Legoland Windsor is starting to seem as sensible a way to proceed as whatever it is we currently have going on in England. Division everywhere you look; poor Alfred would turn in his grave.
But okay, yes, Uhtred was talking about the ninth century, which is also in crisis thanks to everybody rubbing their hands over Alfred’s imminent demise, which will leave Wessex theirs for the taking.
Whose taking? A coalition of the willing.

It’s a year of inadvertent real-world relevance for escapist TV drama. As right wing nationalism bleeds into European politics, SS-gb happens to imagine an England occupied by Nazis.
