Exclusive: Netflix’s film division has preemptively acquired a pitch for an untitled law school thriller from Holland, Michigan‘s Andrew Sodroski, sources tell Deadline.
Netflix could not be reached for comment. While plot details are unknown at this time, the pitch is said to be described as a contemporary spin on The Firm meets The Wolf of Wall Street. Ben Pugh and Peter Dealbert will produce for the L.A. and London-based management and production company 42.
Most recently, 42 worked with Netflix as a producer on its sci-fi actioner Outside the Wire starring Anthony Mackie, which debuted at #1 and was watched by 66 million households in its first quarter on the platform. Sodroski’s pitch marks 42’s second pre-emptive sale in a row on the heels of The Bet, a thriller spec from Enemy‘s Javier Gullón that sold to Warner Bros for what we’re told was a significant figure.

Catching Killers season 3 premiered on June 23 on Netflix.
In previous seasons, the true crime documentary series explored infamous murders such as The Happy Face Killer, Btk, and the Phoenix Serial Shooter. Now the latest season dives into the stories of four new killers: the Railroad Killer, the New York Zodiac Killer, the Olympic Park Bomber and the D.C. Sniper.
However, the Netflix series is not the first time these serial killers have been looked at by the media. If you want to know where to find more information about each of these four cases, here is where you can look.
Railroad Killer
Angel Maturino Reséndiz, also known as the Railroad Killer is suspected of killing at least 23 people across the United States and Mexico in the 1990s. Before voluntarily surrendering himself to law enforcement in 1999, Reséndiz was on the FBI’s Top 10 Most Wanted list. He also featured on the show America’s Most Wanted.

In a lawsuit filed Friday in New York, former NBC and CNN executive Michael Bass was accused of sexually assaulting his former intern in an incident alleged to have happened in 1996 when Bass was at NBC.
The accuser, Aarthi Rajaraman, who filed the lawsuit, says the attack occurred when she was 20 years old and working as an intern for NBC Sports during the network’s coverage of the Atlanta Olympic games.
According to the lawsuit, which was obtained by The Daily Beast, during this time Rajaraman “observed a freewheeling, unchecked culture in which married, older and more senior NBC employees regularly targeted far younger women… for sexual harassment.”
The assault, the suit says, occurred when Bass was a coordinating producer for NBC, handling late-night coverage of the games. He was also a producer on NBC’s “Today Show.” Rajaraman worked for Bass and, along with other staff, accompanied him to Atlanta for the Olympics.

Lasher is a shape-shifting demon who has been linked to the family of witches for generations after being summoned in the 1600s. Rice described him as “a slim, pale, elegant figure with dark eyes and dark hair and a hypnotically seductive power over any of [the Mayfairs] reckless enough to entertain him.”
The character first appeared in Rice’s novel “The Witching Hour” in 1990, which was followed by 1993’s “Lasher” and 1994’s “Taltos.” He was voiced by Joe Morton in the 2000 audiobook.

The true story of the nerdy security guard who saved many lives during a terror attack at the Atlanta Olympics features a couple of great performances – and a lot of silliness
Clint Eastwood’s latest film is a miscarriage-of-justice tale taken from real life, a parable about the evils of “big government” that plays like a weird mashup of Paul Blart: Mall Cop with a bit of Marty, the 1955 Ernest Borgnine film about a sweet, unattractive guy who lives with his mother. It’s got a couple of great performances – and a lot of ropey acting from actors playing crass and mendacious caricatures.
During the 1996 Olympic games in Atlanta, an extreme-right terrorist named Eric Rudolph planted a pipe bomb at the city’s Centennial Park that killed one person and injured many; he was not caught until 2003. The fact that the casualties were not higher is down to the...

With her fourth nomination for an Oscar, Kathy Bates talks about overcoming brutal criticism about her looks, her pride at playing real women and why she loved working with Clint Eastwood
‘Oh, I’m a bumper!” says Kathy Bates as I reach out to shake her hand. A small fist comes towards me with a large, round, pink-rose ring on the middle finger. We bump and laugh and one of the truly unique American acting powerhouses of the past half-century beams back at me. She has a splendid smile, full of mischief and wisdom: a small and compact woman buoyed by that straight-up, unfeigned southern warmth that abides no matter where you encounter it. She fusses over me kindly, offering drinks – a world away from the nervous, shy, deeply rattled and easily hurt woman I have just watched in Clint Eastwood’s new movie, Richard Jewell.

Warner Bros. is standing behind “Richard Jewell,” the Clint Eastwood drama that is the source of controversy over its portrayal of a female journalist trading sex for scoops. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution sent a legal threat to the filmmakers on Monday asking them to include a disclaimer noting that the film took dramatic license.
In a fiery statement, the studio accused the paper of trying to draw attention away from its own questionable reporting on law enforcement officials’ decision to treat Jewell as a suspect in the Centennial Olympic Park bombing. Jewell, a security guard who evacuated the area, was ultimately exonerated, but not before his reputation was damaged in the ensuing media circus.
“The film is based on a wide range of highly credible source material,” Warner Bros.’ statement reads. “There is no disputing that Richard Jewell was an innocent man whose reputation and life were shredded by a miscarriage of justice.

Warner Bros is more than willing to take on one of America’s largest newspapers over claims that portions of the studio’s Clint Eastwood-directed Richard Jewell movie are defamatory.
“The film is based on a wide range of highly credible source material,” the AT&T-owned studio said today after being threatened with a defamation lawsuit by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s outside counsel.
“There is no disputing that Richard Jewell was an innocent man whose reputation and life were shredded by a miscarriage of justice,” Warner Bros added of the AT&T security guard at the center of the 1996 Centennial Olympic Park bombing. “It is unfortunate and the ultimate irony that The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, having been a part of the rush to judgment of Richard Jewell, is now trying to malign our filmmakers and cast. Richard Jewell focuses on the real victim, seeks to tell his story, confirm his innocence and restore his name.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is asking Warner Bros. and the makers of “Richard Jewell” to release a statement acknowledging it took dramatic license when it portrayed journalist Kathy Scruggs as trading sex for tips.
The Clint Eastwood film looks at the media circus that broke out around Jewell, a security guard who came under suspicion for orchestrating the Centennial Olympic Park bombing before being exonerated. Scruggs, an employee at the paper, broke the story that Jewell was under investigation by the FBI. The film shows Scruggs, portrayed by Olivia Wilde, sleeping with an FBI agent (Jon Hamm) to get the story. Scruggs died in 2001 at the age of 42. The paper has maintained that there is no evidence that Scruggs slept with anyone involved in the Jewell investigation.
“We hereby demand that you immediately issue a statement publicly acknowledging that some events were imagined for dramatic purposes and artistic license and dramatization...

Clint Eastwood's biopic Richard Jewell follows the innocent titular character's arc from hero to suspect during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics bombing, which killed two and hurt over 100. Jewell, the security officer helping people clear the area, found himself put under a microscope by the FBI and press despite doing no wrong. It wasn't until almost a decade later when the FBI caught the real bomber: Eric Rudolph, an anti-abortion, homophobic white supremacist who continued setting off bombs after the Atlanta attack.
Eric Rudolph's Early Years
Rudolph's background had many twists and turns. Born in Florida in 1966, his father passed away during his teenage years, a time when he began prescribing to a subculture of intolerance and developed racist views. Before enlisting in the military, he joined a Christian Identity compound, which was devoted to white supremacy. His military service ran short due to him being discharged because of his marijuana use.

If it is an awards season, the name Clint Eastwood can’t be too far away. And so it is yet again as another Eastwood movie has just thrown its hat in the ring. Richard Jewell had a rousing AFI Fest premiere Wednesday night at the Tcl Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, as well as a SAG Nominating Committee screening at Harmony Gold followed by a Q&a that drew standing ovations for Eastwood and the man he cast as Jewell, Paul Walter Hauser. There also was big applause for co-stars Kathy Bates, who plays Jewell’s mother, Bobbi; Sam Rockwell as his lawyer, Watson Bryant; and Jon Hamm, who plays Tom Shaw (a fictional name representing a number of FBI agents). The real Watson Bryant and Bobbi Jewell were also among those in attendance at the premiere and afterparty.

Richard Jewell's life would forever change after he discovered a bomb at the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics. In the blink of an eye, the FBI and media drastically shifted the narrative around him being a public hero to being the case's primary suspect. Two decades later, Clint Eastwood brings Jewell's shocking true story to the big screen in a new project starring Paul Walter Hauser. Based on Marie Brenner's 1997 Vanity Fair profile on Jewell, the film already has the faint hum of Oscar buzz, boasting a star-powered cast with Olivia Wilde, Sam Rockwell, and Jon Hamm. But putting aside this Hollywood glamour, what really happened to Jewell?

Three months ago, I supposed the next great movie newsroom drama would look more like Absence of Malice than All The President’s Men. Who knew that Clint Eastwood, filmdom’s Great Disruptor, would so soon be on his way to making sense of that supposition?
Just last week, Warner Bros. confirmed that Eastwood was poised to begin shooting Richard Jewell, the real-life story of a security guard who was mistakenly hounded as a possible perpetrator of Atlanta’s 1996 Olympic Park bombing. Following news reports, the studio acknowledged that Eastwood will be filming in Georgia, never mind the calls for a boycott over the state’s new abortion law. But that likely won’t be the last spark of controversy around a project that has it all: Reputational damage, over-reaching journalists, investigative onslaught—just like Absence of Malice, and very much like a scene from the current media-political wars.
