Image
“Bupkis” Season 2 is bupkis. Star Pete Davidson has confirmed that he has opted not to continue with his semi-autobiographical Peacock comedy, which had previously been renewed for a second season.

“I’ve always seen Bupkis as a window into my life, since it is so personal and about my struggles and family,” Davidson said ina. statement. “After nearly a decade of my personal life being in the media I wanted a chance to tell my story my way. Of all the work I’ve ever done, Bupkis is by far what I’m most proud of. I am so grateful to Lorne Michaels and Broadway Video, Peacock, Universal Television and the amazing cast and writers for helping me create something honest, funny and heartfelt. I do also feel that this part of my life is finished. I’m very excited for this next chapter and for you guys to see the work.

‘After Midnight’ With Taylor Tomlinson Lands CBS Premiere Date
Image
Nearly nine months after James Corden said goodbye to The Late Late Show, CBS has finally dated his replacement.

After Midnight, a reboot of the old Comedy Central game show @midnight, starring rising comedian Taylor Tomlinson, will premiere on Tuesday, January 16.

The show will, of course, air in The Late Late Show’s former spot at 12:37am, following The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

It comes almost a year after Deadline revealed that a reboot of @midnight, which ran for 600 episodes on the sibling Paramount-owned network, would replace Corden.

Tomlinson, who has recorded a number of Netflix specials, won the hosting job at the end of last year, beating X Mayo and Ricky Velez for the gig.

Jack Martin, who was the showrunner of all four seasons of @midnight, will serve as co-showrunner alongside Eric Pierce, who has exec produced series including CBS’ The Challenge: USA and The Wheel.

Taylor Tomlinson To Host CBS’ ‘After Midnight’
Image
Turns out it’s Taylor Tomlinson hosting After Midnight.

The comedian has scored the late-night CBS gig. She beat out X Mayo and Ricky Velez for the hosting job.

The news was announced on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, whose host will exec produce the series, launching in 2024 (see below).

Tomlinson is a rising stand-up who has released Netflix specials including Quarter-Life Crisis and Look At You.

After Midnight, which is based on Comedy Central’s @midnight, which ran between 2013 and 2017, replaces The Late Late Show with James Corden.

Jack Martin, who was the showrunner of all four seasons of @midnight, will serve as co-showrunner alongside Eric Pierce, who has exec produced series including CBS’ The Challenge: USA and The Wheel.

The duo will exec produce alongside Stephen Colbert, Carrie Byalick, president of Colbert’s Spartina Industries, Tom Purcell, an exec producer on The Late Show, Colbert’s wife...

‘After Midnight’: CBS Sets Showrunners & Team For ‘The Late Late Show With James Corden’ Replacement
Image
CBS is making its latest moves in late-night.

The network has set the showrunners, head writer and exec producing team for After Midnight, its reboot of Comedy Central series @midnight, that will replace The Late Late Show with James Corden.

It comes as the series, which is set to air in the 12:30am slot in early 2024, is narrowing down the field for a host. We hear that Taylor Tomlinson, X Mayo and Ricky Velez are the three in contention and the trio did a test shoot last Wednesday. A decision is expected soon. CBS declined to comment on the host situation.

Jack Martin, who was the showrunner of all four seasons of Comedy Central’s @midnight, which originally ran between 2013 and 2017, will serve as co-showrunner alongside Eric Pierce, who has exec produced series including CBS’ The Challenge: USA and The Wheel.

‘American Auto’ Actress X Mayo in Running to Fill James Corden Late Night Slot
Image
CBS is reportedly nearing the selection of a new host to take over the time slot previously occupied by James Corden’s Late Late Show. In line with their earlier announcement, CBS has opted not to continue the same show with a different host but to introduce a revamped edition of the popular Comedy Central game show, @midnight. As reported by Puck News, CBS’s CEO, George Cheeks, is presently in the process of evaluating three potential hosts: X Mayo, a former Daily Show writer and American Auto actress; Ricky Velez, a stand-up comedian, and Taylor Tomlinson, a comedian, and writer. The exact nature of CBS’s rebooted version remains uncertain, but it’s worth recalling how Comedy Central ran the show from 2013 to 2017. In each episode, a panel of comedians engaged in witty banter about internet culture and the day’s headlines. The contestant in third place was eliminated before the final round,...

‘The Late Show’ Pivots To At-Home Show After Stephen Colbert Tests Positive For Covid
Image
Late-night might be back, but there’s still a few challenges.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is pivoting to an at home-like show after the comedian contracted Covid.

The show will go on remotely with a monologue; Colbert is pretty used to that having previously hosted the show at his house during the pandemic, including his own bathtub.

Guests will include Jada Pinkett Smith, who has been creating headlines with the revelation that she and her husband Will Smith have been separated for years, before that Oscars moment, and comedian Ricky Velez.

Other guests this week include Rachel Maddow and a performance by Caroline Polachek (it’s been a big month for indie rock on the show after performances by boygenius and Japanese Breakfast), Talking Heads, Keegan-Michael Key and Elle Key and the return of his former bandleader Jon Batiste.

Covid was also responsible for the cancellation of Strike Force 3 – Colbert,...

Peacock’s ordering more of Bupkis, giving the half-hour comedy series a season two order. The first season premiered on May 4, 2023 with the release of all eight episodes. Peacock didn’t confirm when fans can expect the just-announced second season to debut.

“Pete Davidson is a once-in-a-generation talent, and what he created with the first season of Bupkis absolutely blew us away,” stated Susan Rovner, Chairman, Entertainment Content, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. “Pete has the rare ability to make you laugh out loud with his unfiltered brand of comedy, and then tear up with his raw and honest vulnerability. We could not be more proud to continue on this journey with Pete, Lorne Michaels, Broadway Video, and our partners at Universal Television for a second season as we continue to bolster Peacock’s comedy slate.

Bupkis: Everything You Need To Know
Image
In what feels like a welcome reprieve, Peacock dropped the entire season of Pete Davidson's pseudo-autobiographical series Bupkis in a nicely binge-able package, like the good old days of streaming originals. The show is both not what one thought it would be and exactly what one thought it would be at the same time. As good as the series may be, the fact that it shares quite a few similarities to other, recent series may dull the audience's reaction.

The series was announced in March 2022 with Pete Davidson developing it alongside Judah Miller, who executive produced Davidson's movie The King of Staten Island and has written for Crashing, another pseudo-autobiographical show based on the life of a stand-up comedian (Pete Homes). SNL writer Dave Sirius is the other co-creator. He also co-wrote The King of Staten Island alongside Davidson and Judd Apatow. It's a strong team, and they...

‘Bupkis’ Series Preview: The Cast, The Plot, and Air Dates

Can you imagine what it’s like to be Pete Davidson, a man whose dating life is the source of dozens of memes and hundreds of gossip pieces? Experience the life of the former SNL star in Peacock’s new eight-episode half-hour comedy, Bupkis. No imagination is required.

Peacock describes the new show as raw and semi-autobiographical. Premiering on Thursday, May 4, 2023, Bupkis follows Pete Davidson as he navigates his family’s unconventional dynamics and learns to find genuine connections amidst the challenges of fame. Supported by big-name guest stars, Bupkis straddles reality and absurdity to best represent what it is to be Pete Davidson (according to Peacock).

Sam and Her Friends Evolved in Single Drunk Female Season 2, and the Cast Agrees
Sam Fink
Sam Fink has grown up. In Single Drunk Female Season 1, she struggled with staying sober and making amends. In Season 2, she's learning it's even harder to remain sober while navigating a new job, a new boyfriend, and moving out on her own.

In many ways, Sam wanted to be normal, but half the time, she knew she was not. She wanted to date someone who didn't have an addiction, but she knew she would still have to attend meetings, something her mom Carol still doesn't understand.

Even though Sam is more in charge of her recovery, she's still an alcoholic, and that's something that mother and daughter finally have to face. It's rough but a beautiful and emotional arc for both.

Both Brit and Felicia decided what they wanted in life, even if it hurt people. Brit went up against her family to finally conquer her dreams. Felicia had someone...

‘Single Drunk Female’ Season 2 Trailer Previews Sam’s Journey to Adulthood and Sobriety (Exclusive Video)
Image
Freeform’s “Single Drunk Female” Season 2 trailer is here to show that Samantha Fink’s sober journey is only the starting point in her story.

The comedy series — set to return Wednesday, April 12, at 10 p.m. Et/Pt on Freeform, and releasing the full ten-episode second season on Hulu Thursday, April 13 — showed a glimpse of Sam (Sofia Black-d’Elia) working to become more self-sufficient after getting more comfortable in her sobriety.

The new trailer, debuting exclusively on TheWrap, finds Sam looking for apartments with her friend Felicia (Lily Mae Harrington) to move into now that she’s been sober for a year and a half.

“If last season was Sam having to deal with her worst self to become her best self, this year it’s ‘I did everything right! Why doesn’t my life work yet?!'” Daisy Gardner, showrunner, executive producer and writer said in a statement to TheWrap.

Patton Oswalt Interview: I Love My Dad Home Release
Image
Warning: This interview contains spoilers for the movie, I Love My Dad.Now available to watch on digital platforms, I Love My Dad is a cringe-comedy that will make viewers laugh and squirm in equal measure. After being blocked on social media, Chuck creates a fake account to reconnect with his troubled son, Franklin. Things take an uncomfortable, yet amusing turn when Franklin falls for the girl Chuck is pretending to be.

Rather than coming clean, Chuck seizes what he thinks is a bonding opportunity. However, it doesn't take long for the desperate father to realize that catfishing his son doesn't come without its complications. ‘The Listener’ Review: Tessa Thompson Anchors Steve Buscemi’s Sparse Study of a Crisis Hotline
Image
Click here to read the full article.

Taking a breather from some of the physically demanding and sometimes villainous roles she’s played of late in the likes of Marvel franchises and HBO’s Westworld, Tessa Thompson stars in The Listener as a more unsung sort of superhuman: a crisis hotline worker.

Perhaps seeing a chance to push to nearly the limit that old thespian saying — sometimes attributed to performance coach Stella Adler — that “acting is reacting,” this spare, low-tech work mostly focuses on Thompson’s expressive face as she listens to calls for help from 10 very different people in distress. The voice cast offers a mix of famous (Margaret Cho, Alia Shawkat, Rebecca Hall) and less well-known names, democratically allotted roughly the same amount of air time by the film.

The Listener represents actor-director Steve Buscemi’s fifth directing credit, the second after Lonesome Jim where’s he’s stayed strictly behind the camera.

The Letterboxd Story: A Site For Film Lovers & Film Listers Giving Indie Distributors A Hand – Specialty Preview
Image
A New Zealand-based platform where fans track, review and share lists of movies old and new is an increasingly influential marketing tool for specialty film with budgets tight and audiences harder to reach.

Letterboxd, founded as a passion project by Auckland tech entrepreneurs Matthew Buchanan and Karl von Randow just over a decade ago, recently passed 6.5 million members, with 40-50 in North America followed by the U.K., Europe and breakout markets including Brazil, India, Australia, Indonesia and the Philippines. It has 4.4 million monthly visitors and 800 million monthly page views.

Since launch, users have logged a whopping 1 billion films they’ve seen, put 300 million films on watchlists and posted 76.8 million reviews. Average time spent per visitor per month across web and app is about 40 minutes.

Letterboxd has been profitable since 2019, which is “source of immense pride,” Buchanan tells Deadline. The founders early on declined venture capital backing, he said, to...

I Love My Dad had its World Premiere at SXSW 2022 to incredible praise from both fans and critics alike, winning both the Narrative Feature Grand Jury Award and Audience Award.

Inspired by writer, director, and star James Morosini’s true life experience, I Love My Dad follows Chuck (Patton Oswalt), a hopelessly estranged father who desperately wants to reconnect with his troubled son, Franklin (Morosini). Blocked on social media and concerned for his son’s life, Chuck impersonates a waitress online and starts checking in with Franklin. James Morosini
Patton Oswalt Catfishes His Son in First Trailer for I Love My Dad
James Morosini
Written, directed, and led by James Morosini based on his own experiences, I Love My Dad was a cringe comedy hit at SXSW earlier this year and now it’s set to arrive in next month. Also starring Patton Oswalt, he plays a hopelessly estranged father who desperately wants to reconnect with his troubled son, Franklin (Morosini), eventually leading him to an inadvertent catfishing adventure. Ahead of a release, the first trailer has now arrived.

John Fink said in his review, “Along the way I Love You Dad strikes a unique tone that is at times hilariously cringe-inducing, while also building some empathy for the psychopathic tendencies of Chuck. Franklin is played with extreme vulnerability by Morosini, who in the credits swears this is a true story his father doesn’t want you to know is a true story. Sulewski is radiant as the imaginary manic pixie dream girl tailor-made...

I Love My Dad (2022)
Patton Oswalt Catfishes His Son in Trailer for SXSW Winner ‘I Love My Dad’ (Video)
I Love My Dad (2022)
The cringiest comedy of the year may be “I Love My Dad,” a film in which Patton Oswalt plays an estranged dad who catfishes his own son in order to desperately reconnect with him. And stranger yet is the fact that the story is based on something that really happened to the film’s writer, director and star.

“I Love My Dad” was written, directed and stars James Morosini, who in the film plays Franklin, a 20-something coping with his own mental health who takes the step of blocking his father’s contact after years of being absent and broken promises.

But his father Chuck (Oswalt) still has good intentions and comes up with the idea to impersonate a waitress online in order to stay in touch, only to inadvertently start a romantic online relationship with him.

‘I Love My Dad’ Teaser: Patton Oswalt and James Morosini Lead the Upcoming Summer Comedy (Video)
Patton Oswalt
Comedian Patton Oswalt stars alongside James Morosini in the South by Southwest Winner “I Love My Dad.” Morosini most recently starred in “Sex Lives for College Girls,” but in his latest project, the actor wrote, directed and stars in the feature.

“I Love My Dad,” is inspired by James Morosini’s real-life relationship with his father. Morosini’s character, Franklin, and his estranged father, Chuck’s (Oswalt) attempt to reconnect with Franklin. As seen in the trailer, the film shows precisely how far Chuck will go to connect with his son after being blocked on social media. Chuck takes matters into his own hands and impersonates a young woman to check in on Franklin. However, things take a turn when Franklin falls for this imaginary woman (Claudia Sulewski). After Chuck inadvertently catfishes his son, he attempts to deter his son from wanting to meet him (but really “her”) in real life.

Magnolia Pictures Buys Patton Oswalt Catfishing Comedy ‘I Love My Dad’ (Exclusive)
Image
Magnolia Pictures has acquired North American rights to “I Love My Dad,” one of the biggest breakouts from this year’s SXSW.

Critics loved “I Love My Dad” reserving particular praise for the direction of James Morosini and for Patton Oswalt’s lead performance. The movie, which won the Grand Jury Prize for Narrative Feature as well as the Narrative Feature Competition Audience Award at the festival, certainly gets points for originality. It follows a young man (Morosini) who is catfished by his hopelessly estranged father (Oswalt) in a desperate attempt to reconnect. Blocked on social media and concerned for his son’s life, Oswalt’s character impersonates a waitress online and starts checking in with his son. But things begin to spiral out of control when the son falls for this imaginary girl (Claudia Sulewski) and wants nothing more than to meet her in person.

Variety’s Peter Debruge praised the film as “funny,...

‘The King of Staten Island’ Blu-ray Review

In many ways films like this are the hardest to write about, The King of Staten Island lacks in any narrative structure and struggles to find its purpose. The narrative causes the film to feel long and the script has a lethargic feel to it. Yet, despite this, the characters come on to the screen fully formed, each and everyone feeling like real people, unique in their own individual way. It’s the charm and likability of these characters that drives the film forward and keeps you engaged for the entire runtime.

King Of Staten Island- Review
Image
(from left) Scott Carlin (Pete Davidson) and Papa (Steve Buscemi) in The King of Staten Island, directed by Judd Apatow. Courtesy of Universal

At 24, Scott (Pete Davidson) is stuck in perpetual adolescence, living with his mother Margie (Marisa Tomei) in the Staten Island home where he grew up. Traumatized when his firefighter father was killed trying to rescue someone when Scott was seven, he has never recovered despite years of therapy and in fact, has built his persona around the trauma. His well-meaning, kind-hearted mother, an overworked ER nurse, has built her life around her son’s care, treating him as if he were a fragile patient. If fact, everyone seems to tip-toe around Scott as if he might break from his childhood trauma.

Scott himself embraces this view, dodging jobs and hanging out with high school pals Oscar (Ricky Velez), Igor (Moises Arias) and Richie (Lou Wilson), playing video games and smoking pot.
