When Erin Johnson was named executive producer of “Entertainment Tonight” in June 2019, one of her first objectives was to give the syndicated show’s 7-year-old set at CBS Studio Center a major makeover. She had hoped to unveil the new stage in time for “Et’s” 40th anniversary in 2020, but just a few months into Johnson’s new job, the plans were put on hold due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Fast forward to today. “Entertainment Tonight” will launch its 41st season this evening with co-hosts Kevin Frazier and Nischelle Turner and correspondents Lauren Zima, Matt Cohen and Rachel Smith from a new set that was built over the summer.
“There are so many things that I love about this set,” Johnson tells me. “I think number one is just how much we’re able to do with it. It’s a lot of monitors. It’s a lot of LED lights.

Yvette Nicole Brown says after four years of Donald Trump, this year’s Emily’s List pre-Oscar event is “like a burst of sunshine.” As always, the organization, which works to elect female Democratic candidates, will host a keynote panel with industry figures on April 20 (see Must Attend for details). “Talk about a light at the end of the tunnel,” the former “Community” star says of the Biden-Harris administration. “I think we as a nation have turned a corner. There are still tough times ahead, but we’ve all learned collectively what happens when we don’t vote or when we vote for people who don’t care about people.” Brown says she may even run for political office someday. “Before Donald Trump, I never thought about running because I believed I wasn’t smart enough to do it,” she tells me.

Nischelle Turner has been promoted to co-host of “Entertainment Tonight.” She’ll now anchor the entertainment newsmagazine program alongside existing host Kevin Frazier on a full-time basis.
“Nischelle can do it all. She can go from a heartfelt conversation with Oscar winner Viola Davis about the impact of Cicely Tyson to singing karaoke on a balcony with Jimmy Fallon. She is warm, thoughtful, and full of energy,” Erin Johnson, “Entertainment Tonight’s” executive producer, said in a statement on Thursday. “Celebrities respect her skills as a seasoned journalist, and our audience has taken notice of her fun chemistry with Kevin (Frazier). “Entertainment Tonight” has found its newest co-host, elevating Nischelle Turner to the top job alongside current host Kevin Frazier. With the promotion, Turner makes history as the first Black woman to serve as co-host of “Et.”
“It means everything to me,” Turner tells Variety of the historic moment. “Make no mistake about it: I believe and have always believed that I was the best person for the job, but it was never lost on me that it was also bigger than just me. I would be representing an underserved group of people who are finally getting a moment in the spotlight — and a well-deserved moment.”
In her new role, announced by executive producer Erin Johnson, Turner joins an elite (and small) group of women who have co-hosted the top-ranked entertainment news show — Mary Hart (who anchored from 1982-2011) and Nancy O’Dell (2011 to 2019).

After nearly 40 years of reporting the news, on Friday, “Entertainment Tonight” is making it.
The four-time Emmy Award-winning show has claimed the Guinness World Record for the longest-running entertainment news TV show. The award is based on the amount of time a series has been on the air. To date, “Et” has officially broadcast for 38 years and 118 days, debuting on Sept. 14, 1981.
“That’s crazy,” “Entertainment Tonight” host Kevin Frazier said of being honored in the Guinness Book of World Records.
“As a kid who grew up reading that book — before the internet and all that — you laughed at the crazy records and marveled at the big ones,” he continued. “So it’s mind-blowing and the greatest of honors.”
For comparison’s sake, “Jeopardy” (on the air since 1984) reached its 8,000 episodes milestone in October 2019, while the Guinness Book record-holder for the longest-running TV show is “Meet the Press,” which debuted in 1948.
