Why Theo James Was Right Not To Return For Sanditon Season 2
Image
Theo James didn't return for Sanditon season 2, which was disappointing for fans of the PBS Masterpiece series until they saw just how well the show handled Sidney's (James) absence, but it begs the question - why did Theo James leave Sanditon? James played the brooding hero Sidney Parker opposite Rose Williams' Charlotte Heywood. When the innocent Charlotte came to the seaside resort town of Sanditon and met Sanditon's cast of wealthy gentry, she and Sidney fell in love. However, they didn't declare their feelings until the final episode — after Sidney decided he had to marry a wealthy heiress to financially rescue his family.

Sanditon received a surprise renewal for seasons 2 and 3 beginning in 2022 – however, it would continue without one of its most loved performers. The joy of Sanditon's resurrection was temporarily undercut by Theo James announcing that he would not return for seasons 2 and 3. Sanditon season 2 killed Sidney off while...

‘Sanditon’: Masterpiece Drops Trailer For Final Season
Image
Masterpiece has released a trailer for the upcoming final season of Sanditon, the drama inspired by Jane Austen’s final, unfinished novel, that was adapted and created by Andrew Davies and produced by Red Planet Pictures.

The series took on its own direction (Austen only finished 11 chapters before her death) and writer Justin Young took the helm as lead writer and executive producer for seasons 2 and 3. The drama will premiere on 9 p.m. Sunday, March 19, on PBS. The series also will be available to stream the same day.

Returning characters for Season 3 include Charlotte Heywood (Rose Williams), Georgiana Lambe (Crystal Clarke), Alexander Colbourne (Ben Lloyd-Hughes), Tom Parker (Kris Marshall), Mary Parker (Kate Ashfield), Lady Denham (Anne Reid), Edward Denham (Jack Fox), Arthur Parker (Turlough Convery), Lady Susan (Sophie Winkleman), and Ralph Starling (Cai Brigden).

More new faces are joining the series, like Lady Montrose, who is the quintessential Austen mother. She arrives in Sanditon with one objective: matches for her children, Lydia and Henry. Lydia is an independent young woman who is not as eager for a match as her mother, while Lord Henry Montrose is charismatic and confident, but he holds a secret.

There’s also Rowleigh Pryce, a wealthy, curmudgeonly investor who is interested in teaming up with Tom Parker on the seaside resort’s expansion. Their plans become complicated when Rowleigh runs into Lady Denham. Also new to Sanditon is Alexander’s brother, Samuel Colbourne – a lawyer, and a charming bachelor.

‘Sanditon’: Masterpiece Releases Images From Season 3
Image
Masterpiece has released images from the upcoming season of its Jane Austen adaptation Sanditon.

Season 3 of the series will premiere in 2023 on PBS, and brings viewers back to the seaside resort town of Sanditon to follow the romances, friendships, and struggles of Charlotte, Georgiana and the Parker family. It stars Rose Williams as Charlotte Heywood, Cai Brigden as Ralph Starling, Ben Lloyd-Hughes as Alexander Colbourne, Edward Davis as Lord Montrose and Crystal Clarke as Georgiana Lambe.

The series is based on Austen’s final, unfinished novel and was developed by Andrew Davies.

Devoted fans have helped to keep the drama on the small screen. A campaign called the Sanditon Sisterhood was created after the series was canceled by original broadcaster ITV in 2019 after just one season. More than a year later, Sanditon was brought back to life for a second and third run by Masterpiece and ITV-owned streamer BritBox.

Sanditon (2019)
Here’s Why Theo James Isn’t in ‘Sanditon’ Season 2
Sanditon (2019)
Spoilers abound for Sanditon Season 1 (and the first episode of Season 2) below. You’ve been warned!

Fans of romantic period dramas, rejoice! March brought the sophomore return of two beloved Regency-era shows — Netflix’s “Bridgerton” and PBS Masterpiece’s “Sanditon.” While the former is definitely the more boisterous and popular of the two, the latter has amassed a small-but-mighty fanbase of devotees.

Based on the 11 chapters of Jane Austen’s unfinished manuscript, “Sanditon and The Watsons,” the series first premiered in the UK in 2019, followed by a January 2020 release in the United States. Created by Emmy and BAFTA-winning “Bridget Jones’s Diary” writer Andrew Davies, “Sanditon” follows the free-spirited Charlotte Heywood (Rose Williams) as she relocates from her rural town to Sanditon, a fishing village with aspirations of becoming a bustling seaside resort. While there, she meets the Mr. Darcy-esque Sidney Parker (Theo James), an initially uninviting man who nonetheless piques her interest.

How Theo James Was Written Out of Sanditon Season 2
Theo James
It's pretty clear that Theo James won't be returning for future seasons of Sanditon. During the season two premiere, which aired on March 20, the Masterpiece PBS series revealed what happened to Theo's Sidney Parker following the actor's exit from the show. Specifically, the new episode opened with Sidney's funeral. Yes, you read that correctly: Sanditon killed off the dashing Regency-era gentleman. So how exactly did Sidney die? After marrying Eliza Campion (Ruth Kearney) for her wealth, Sidney caught a fatal case of yellow fever and died in Antigua. As for how leading lady Charlotte Heywood (Rose Williams) learned the news? She was given the tragic update...

How ‘Sanditon’ Handled Sidney’s Season 2 Exit — And Why It Happened That Way
Image
[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Sanditon Season 2 premiere.] Sidney Parker is dead! The long-awaited Season 2 premiere of PBS drama Sanditon wasted no time revealing his fate: The fiery Regency gentleman, who had been ready to propose to Charlotte Heywood before fate intervened at the end of the first season, succumbed to yellow fever on a trip to Antigua. The episode opened with Sidney’s funeral (even before the opening credits). Shots of his coffin being carried to his grave were interspersed with a buoyant Charlotte (Rose Williams) dancing up a storm back home in Willingden — until Sidney’s sister-in-law Mary (Kate Ashfield) brought her the news of his death. Viewers have known for a year that Sidney’s portrayer, Theo James, wouldn’t be reprising his role for the Masterpiece series’ sophomore season. His departure dashed hopes that Charlotte and Sidney would eventually live happily ever after. Season 1 of this adaptation of Jane Austen’s...

‘Sanditon’ Returns: The British Period Drama Saved By A Sisterhood Campaign
Image
The second series of Jane Austen adaptation Sanditon debuts on PBS Masterpiece Sunday and BritBox Monday but, were it not for a fan-led campaign that the original author would have been proud of, the show could easily have slipped off TV altogether.

A Sanditon Sisterhood campaign kicked into gear when the show was axed by original broadcaster ITV after just one season and, more than a year after the cancellation, Sanditon, which is based on an unfinished Austen manuscript, was revived for a second and third run by co-producer PBS Masterpiece and ITV-owned streamer BritBox.

The Austen-obsessed Sisterhood were energizing, launching a website, Instagram page and even bombarding execs and commissioners with Sanditon gifts including a Saving Sanditon egg box (an oft-quoted line from the show goes “Sanditon will rise from the ashes as sure as eggs are eggs”) and a clutch of Saving Sanditon facemasks.

“The Sisterhood were being...

Roush Review: A Return to ‘Sanditon’ Leaves Much to be Desired
Image
It is a well-known fact that Jane Austen and PBS‘s Masterpiece go together like the proverbial tea and crumpets. Which is why it was such a shock for fans to be left hanging two years ago when the series version of Sanditon — based on Austen’s final, unfinished novel — was canceled by its British producers before its first season even aired on PBS in the winter of 2020. If the original unfinished manuscript left Austen fans wanting more, dismayed viewers were additionally vexed by the unhappy ending Sanditon‘s producers had contrived for its heroine, Charlotte Heywood (the disarming Rose Williams). She and everyone else were left heartbroken when her studly love interest Sidney Parker (Theo James) was forced to marry another to rescue his unlucky brother Tom (Kris Marshall) from financial ruin. (Credit: Joss Barratt/Red Planet) As fan outcry mounted over the truncated run, Masterpiece was able to...

Inside ‘Sanditon’ Season 2 With the Cast & Creators: ‘This Is Really Charlotte’s Story’
Image
Sand, seashells…and an airplane hangar? Welcome to the set of Sanditon, outside Bristol, England, where the 19th and 21st centuries collide. Not that viewers will notice when the long-awaited new season of the Masterpiece series premieres on PBS on March 20. But when the cast filmed scenes at a specially made beach last year, a huge aircraft shed where the Concorde was constructed sat where the water should be. The sea was digitally added later. The set is just one new element of the resurrected romantic drama, inspired by Jane Austen’s unfinished novel. Also painfully new: the absence of leading man Theo James as Sidney Parker, especially since the first season didn’t deliver the Austen-style happy ending for cherished pair Sidney and Charlotte Heywood (Rose Williams) that fans had hoped for. Instead, Sidney announced that he was marrying his former fiancée, whose money would keep his brother Tom...

Sanditon‘s Season 2 premiere grows closer each passing day and BritBox is giving fans a closer look at what’s to come with a special new teaser. The UK-based streamer, which will run the show’s upcoming episodes in conjunction as they air on PBS, offered a glimpse into Charlotte Heywood’s (Rose Williams) return to the seaside resort town and the potential romances that will ensue. “Charlotte, are you not excited to be returning?” Charlotte’s sister Alison (Rosie Graham) asks excitedly. (Credit: Joss Barratt/Red Planet/PBS Masterpiece) The pair venture together to visit the coastal spot where in Season 1, Charlotte fell for Sidney Parker (Theo James). The experience has left her feeling a bit burnt out on the whole institution of love, something that Alison is all too eager to explore. “How are we to attract rich husbands unless we look the part?” Alison seems to ask,...

PBS Drops ‘Sanditon’ Season 2 Trailer; Roku Announces ‘Doomlands’ Premiere Date (TV News Roundup)
Image
PBS and Wgbh’s Masterpiece released the trailer for the highly anticipated second season of “Sanditon” on Thursday. Inspired by Jane Austen’s unfinished novel, the historical drama tells the story of Charlotte Heywood, a high-spirited young woman who happens upon the seaside town of Sanditon during a time of social change, and becomes intrigued by the town’s inhabitants and their secrets.

The first season of the fan-favorite British series ended on a giant cliffhanger in early 2020, and having been canceled in the UK by ITV, it wasn’t clear if anything would ever be resolved. But following fan outcry and the successful run on “Masterpiece,” the show was revived and ordered for a second and third season last year. But change is afoot, and the second season is sure to resolve some fans’ mixed reactions — while creating new drama.

Theo James Will Not Be Returning to Sanditon Following Its Surprise Renewal
Regé-Jean Page
If you thought Regé-Jean Page leaving Bridgerton was bad, just wait until you hear this Sanditon news… On Friday, May 7, PBS' Masterpiece announced that star Theo James will not be returning to Sanditon for seasons two and three. Earlier this week, fans were shocked to learn that the British period drama, which is based on Jane Austen's unfinished novel of the same name, had its 2019 cancelation reversed after PBS gave a surprise two season order. In the unexpected announcement, the network confirmed that Sanditon leading lady Rose Williams will be returning to her Charlotte Heywood role. At the time, it was unclear whether Theo would be involved in the new seasons. And,...

Sanditon Saved After Cancellation, But This Star Will Not Be Back
Ben Miller in Meurtres au paradis (2011)
The campaign to save Sanditon was a success!

In a rare move, PBS and ITV reversed the cancellation earlier this week and went on to order two additional seasons.

ITV acquired the new seasons, with BritBox Original in the UK joining the series as a co-producer.

The new seasons will be developed by writer Justin Young, who will take on the role of lead writer and executive producer alongside Andrew Davies.

"We are absolutely delighted to announce a second and third season of Sanditon, a show that has inspired such a passionate and devoted fan base. Audiences can expect romance, humor, and plenty of twists and turns in these new seasons," executive producer Susanne Simpson said in a statement.

Unfortunately, one of the stars of the show will not be back.

Theo James took to social media Friday to announce his exit after a single season.

“Although I relished playing Sidney,...

Theo James Exits ‘Sanditon’ After Surprise Two-Season Renewal
Image
Theo James, who portrayed Sidney on PBS’ Sanditon, has announced he’s exiting the series following the UK period drama’s surprise two-season renewal.

James revealed the news Friday on social media.

“Although I relished playing Sidney, for me, I’ve always maintained that his journey concluded as I wanted it to,” he wrote in the announcement on the show’s official Twitter account. “The broken fairy-tale like ending between Charlotte and Sidney is different, unique and so interesting to me and I wish the cast and crew of Sanditon every success with future series.”

Sanditon was canceled by British broadcaster ITV back in 2019, but its ratings success on PBS’ Masterpiece prompted a cancellation reversal and a renewal for seasons 2 and 3, announced just yesterday.

Rose Williams will return to play the high-spirited and independent heroine Charlotte Heywood. The series is based on Jane Austen’s final, unfinished novel and was developed by Andrew Davies.

Sanditon may have risen from the dead this week, but when the romantic drama — based on Jane Austen’s final, unfinished novel — returns to PBS, it’ll do so without one of its leading men.

Theo James, who portrayed Sidney Parker in the eight-part, ITV-produced series, will not return for the upcoming second and third seasons.

Hold on to Your Bonnets: ‘Sanditon’ Renewed for Two Seasons on PBS, Theo James Won’t Return
Image
It’s wild when a fan movement works, isn’t it?

On Thursday, Masterpiece on PBS announced that it had renewed “Sanditon,” the ITV series based on Jane Austen’s final, unfinished novel, for not one — but two — seasons.

The news comes after an extensive fan driven online campaign for the show, starring Rose Williams as the heroine Charlotte Heywood, to be continued. It just goes to prove that greenlighting a show for a single season and ending with a bodice-ripping cliffhanger (“What do you Mean she just rides off in the carriage after he came after her?!?”) can sometimes be a smart business decision.

Theo James, however, will not be returning to show in the role of Sydney Parker. In a statement provided to IndieWire, James said: “Although I relished playing Sidney, for me, I’ve always maintained that his journey concluded as I wanted it to. The broken...

‘Sanditon’: British Period Drama Renewed For Two Seasons By PBS & BritBox UK After U.S. Ratings Reverse Cancellation Decision
Image
British period drama Sanditon will be back after all.

The show was canceled by British broadcaster ITV back in 2019, but its success on PBS’ Masterpiece strand has paved the way for a two-season renewal order. PBS is bringing it back for Season 2 and Season 3.

BritBox, the streaming service run by ITV and the BBC, will be the initial UK partner rather than the linear broadcaster, which will have second-run rights.

Rose Williams will return to play the high-spirited and independent heroine Charlotte Heywood. The series is based on Jane Austen’s final, unfinished novel and was developed by Andrew Davies. It will see Williams’ Heywood return to the picturesque coastal resort of Sanditon.

Justin Young, who wrote four episodes of the first season, will develop the new seasons and take the role of lead writer and executive producer. Davies, who originally created the series, will also return to write several episodes and executive produce.

‘Sanditon’ Renewed for Seasons 2 and 3 on PBS’ Masterpiece
Jane Austen
Series is based on Jane Austen’s final, unfinished novel

Jane Austen never got to finish “Sanditon,” but perhaps PBS’ Masterpiece will.

Masterpiece on PBS has renewed the drama series, which is based on Austen’s final, unfinished novel, for Seasons 2 and 3.

Rose Williams will return as heroine Charlotte Heywood. Addition casting will be announced at a later date, Masterpiece said.

“We are absolutely delighted to announce a second and third season of ‘Sanditon,’ a show that has inspired such a passionate and devoted fan base,” Susanne Simpson, Masterpiece executive producer, said in a statement on Thursday. “Audiences can expect romance, humor and plenty of twists and turns in these new seasons of ‘Sanditon.'”

Austen only completed 11 chapters of the source material before her death in 1817 at age 41. Those 24,000 words basically lasted for all of one TV episode.

“Sanditon” first aired overseas on ITV in Aug. 2019. Those eight episodes...

Bridgerton: Best Shows to Watch After the Netflix Series
Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton in La chronique des Bridgerton (2020)
Netflix’s Bridgerton has swept viewers off their feet with its lush blend of romance tropes—fake relationship, forbidden love, “we could be together if only we could stop misunderstanding each other”—anchored by the soapy, searing gossip of one Lady Whistledown. Those eight episodes went down like tea sandwiches, doubtless leaving viewers hungry for more Regency romance and timeless drama. Thankfully, you can sate your appetites with these nine TV series. A mix of adaptations and original series, they reimagine famous figures as compelling heroines and transplant viewers into immersive towns and households, with new scandals and love stories to get obsessed with.

Dickinson (AppleTV+)

Alena Smith’s brilliant, queer dramedy series audaciously reimagines the historically reclusive poet as a Millennial soul stuck in 19th-century societal constraints. It’s delightfully anachronistic, with artful contemporary music choices—like one sequence set to Lizzo’s “Boys”—and gleefully meta cameos like...

Sanditon (2019)
‘Sanditon’ Review: Masterpiece’s Jane Austen Adaptation on PBS Is Perfect Escapist Fare
Sanditon (2019)
[Editor’s Note: This review contains spoilers for “Sanditon,” including the ending.]

It was winter when Jane Austen realized she was dying. In January 1817, she started her final novel, a comedic tale set in a fledgling seaside resort whose owners have ambitions to attract moneyed clientele from London and beyond. In March, she stopped writing, carefully noting the date: March 18, 1817.

In July — four months to the day after she wrote those last words — she died. Scholars still don’t know the cause, with speculation ranging from Addison’s disease to Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Austen was 41.

It’s easy to psychoanalyze that unfinished novel, “Sanditon.” Austen was ill, she wanted to escape to the shore — so she did in her writing. Her heroine, Charlotte Heywood, dreams of a more cosmopolitan place than her genteel-but-shabby country home packed with siblings, and an act of quick-thinking bravery earns her an invite to the seaside Sanditon to stay with the Parker family.

PBS: “We’re In British Drama For The Long Haul” Despite Growing Competition From Digital Rivals – TCA
PBS remains committed to co-producing and acquiring British drama despite increased competition from digital rivals including BritBox and Acorn TV.

The public broadcaster has long been the home of scripted series from the other side of the pond but has found itself competing with more rivals in recent years, including Svod platforms and cable networks, which are increasingly co-producing series with UK networks.

But Paula Kerger, President and CEO of PBS, said that it would not back down in pursuit of the best shows from Britain. She highlighted the fact that PBS was free compared to other services.

“Drama is very important to our audience and stations. But remember, we’re free and we’re available to everyone. We feel that drama and our partnership with British drama is important. Yes, it has become more competitive and we’re working much further [ahead]… it is harder to close some of those...

‘Masterpiece’ Updates Slate: Jane Austen’s ‘Sanditon’; London-Set Fourth Estate Soap; Spy Intrigue ‘Mrs Wilson’ – TCA
Jane Austen
PBS’ Masterpiece came to TCA, noticeably absent executive producer/force of nature Rebeccca Eaton, to showcase the next season of Victoria and first season of The Miniaturist.

But first, Eaton’s deputy, Susanne Simpson, walked Masterpiece-adoring TV critics through the franchise’s projects in the works:

In 2019, PBS will air three-parter Mrs. Wilson, starring Ruth Wilson playing her own grandmother.

Also in the works, six-part Press, takes place in London and follows two rival newspapers, “one like the Sun and the other like Guardian,” Simpson said coyly, and how they compete for the best stories and the best journalists, delving “into the complicated lives of these people.” It’s penned by Doctor Foster writer Mike Bartlett, she revealed.

And, as Deadline reported earlier this month, PBS Masterpiece and British broadcaster ITV are teaming to bring Jane Austen’s unfinished final novel Sanditon to television. The broadcasters have partnered on the...

Jane Austen’s Unfinished Novel ‘Sanditon’ Set as ITV, PBS Masterpiece Series
Jane Austen
Jane Austen’s unfinished final novel, “Sanditon,” is being developed as a lavish period epic for ITV in Britain and PBS Masterpiece in the U.S. Veteran TV scribe Andrew Davies (“Pride and Prejudice”) is writing the eight-part series, with Tony Jordan’s “Hooten & The Lady” drama indie Red Planet Pictures on production duty.

Austen penned the first 11 chapters of Sanditon months before her death in 1817. It follows Charlotte Heywood, a spirited and impulsive woman who moves from her rural home to Sanditon, a sleepy fishing village attempting to reinvent itself as a seaside resort. Heywood’s spiky relationship with the humorous, charming Sidney Parker is a key part of the story, which has “a spirited young heroine, a couple of entrepreneurial brothers, some dodgy financial dealings, a West Indian heiress, and quite a bit of nude bathing,” said Davies.

“It’s a rich, romantic, family saga built upon the foundations Jane Austen laid,...
