Patrick Swayze was one of a kind. He’s the only actor I can think of who was as comfortable cutting a rug on the dance floor as demolishing a room full of bad guys with his fists of fury. When he passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2009, we lost an icon who was never really recognized as the legend he is in his time. In the years since many Patrick Swayze movies have become cult favourites, and with a Road House remake recently a hit, we decided now would be a good time to pick the five best Patrick Swayze movies.
Red Dawn (1984)
John Millius’s cold war “what if” thriller goes down in the history books as the first-ever PG-13 movie. It was also Patrick Swayze’s first major leading role, with him best known up to this point for a supporting role in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Outsiders.

If there’s one thing you can count on in this unpredictable world, it’s that Nicolas Cage will never let you pin him down. One moment he’s sucking blood as Dracula, the next, he’s out there catching waves like a philosophical Johnny Utah. And now, with The Surfer, Cage is back in all his sun-kissed glory, and the internet is having a field day with it.
Rotten Tomatoes is already nodding in approval, but as always, the Cage fandom is split right down the middle. Some are hyped while others are preparing their best memes for what they think will be his next great cinematic misadventure.

Whether he’s riding a wave of success or crashing into cult-movie territory, one thing is certain, Cage never does anything halfway. So, is this another instant classic, or will it be washed away by the tide?...

Into the fifties, a trinity of electric young performers—Montgomery Clift, Marlon Brando and James Dean, in that order—emerged as major players in the movie industry. All students trained in The Actors’ Studio, the trio greatly popularized Method Acting. Not what we have come to know today of going extreme, sometimes wild, lengths for immersing into a role, but truthfully, it means exploring and exteriorizing the inner complexity of the human condition by way of your own personal experience.
This introduced a new type of leading man, who, unlike its precursors—the dashing and suave casanovas of Gary Cooper and Errol Flynn; the dorky and sweet charmers of Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart; or the cynical and unbeatable tough guys of John Wayne and Humphrey Bogart—showcased a deeply nuanced and conflicted emotional spectrum, offering more wounded and vulnerable representations of masculinity on screen. Keanu Reeves has built a career starring in action movies such as The Matrix and John Wick, but he was initially not a first-choice actor in this genre. Starting his acting journey around the late ‘80s, he found immense fame after appearing in the 1989 comedy film Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure.

This achievement led to filmmakers wanting to work with him, and one director saw his potential to become an action star. Of course, this was contested by the higher-ups who didn’t believe in Reeves’ versatility.

Netflix’s Daredevil didn’t just feel like another superhero show, but an emotionally charged drama, packed with hand-to-hand combat and moral dilemmas. The character’s complex philosophy, the exceptionally choreographed action sequences, along with the powerful Kingpin, added to the show’s brilliance.

It's extremely early in the year, but I imagine it will be tough for another 2025 movie title to come along that's more metal than "Den of Thieves 2: Pantera." But if this grungy, pulpy franchise had gone a slightly different way during development, we would have been deprived of that title -- and indeed, the "Den of Thieves" movies in their entirety. Instead, we came very close to getting a "Den of Thieves" TV series.
"When I did my research for 'Den 1' back in the day, I just came across so many different heists and I got to know the cops that were investigating them, and I just had so much material that we knew that we were going to be building a franchise," writer/director Christian Gudegast told me in a recent interview. "There was a minute way back in the day where it was going to become a TV series.

Attention all fans of '90's cinema and off-the-wall action, please take note: Point Break is leaving Netflix on December 1st of this year. The film — which stars Keanu Reeves as FBI agent Johnny Utah and Patrick Swayze as surfer and criminal Bodhi — is essential viewing for anyone who likes action that leaves you at the edge of your seat, and incredibly compelling character dynamics that pull you into a world of thievery done just for the thrill of it.
Rather than simply being a conventional game of cat-and-mouse between cop and robber — such as venerated classics like Michael Mann's Heat — Point Break is groundbreaking in its commitment to entangling Reeves' character Johnny with the mastermind Bodhi. The criminal has an alluring philosophy, one of constantly chasing the ultimate thrill, and it draws the undercover cop into their dangerous lifestyle. The unconventional nature of the two leads' relationship, paired with the stunning action,...

Kathryn Bigelow’s action movie Point Break has received a brand-new streaming update for next month. The 1991 cult classic was led by Keanu Reeves and the late Patrick Swayze as they portrayed the respective roles of FBI Agent Johnny Utah, and surfer Bodhi.
Beginning on Dec. 1, 20th Century Fox’s Point Break movie will officially be available to stream on Paramount+. The story centers around an FBI Agent who goes undercover to infiltrate a group of surfers, who are suspected to be involved in a recent string of bank robberies. Leading the surfers is the charismatic Bodhi, who likes living on the edge. However, while doing the mission, Johnny develops a complex friendship with Bodhi, leading him to get drawn into their lifestyle and philosophies. To make matters difficult, Johnny also unexpectedly falls in love with a female surfer, who’s close to the gang.

From Keanu Reeves to Laurence Fishburne, the cast of The Matrix trilogy is full of great movie stars who made unforgettable icons out of their characters. The Wachowskis assembled one of the best movie casts of the 90s when they were putting together their groundbreaking sci-fi actioner, and brought in even more screen legends when they came back to direct the sequels. They recruited actors who were already big names in Hollywood, like Reeves and Fishburne, and they also gave some new actors their big break. Carrie-Anne Moss first gained international attention with her role in The Matrix.
The Matrix almost had a very different cast. Will Smith was approached to play Neo and Sean Connery was approached to play Morpheus. Janet Jackson came close to clinching the role of Trinity, but she had to turn it down due to scheduling conflicts. With these original choices in the roles, The Matrix...

Kathryn Bigelow’s action-bromance about bank-robbing surfer dudes is an enduring cult gem, thanks to its joining of tropes and tones
Director Kathryn Bigelow’s crazy action romp from 1991 now gets a rerelease. Eric Hobsbawm might have called it the final moment of The Long Eighties Decade of Action Movies, with shootouts, PAEs (pointless action explosions) and a recurring prosthetic cameo for Ronald Reagan. Bigelow’s feminist achievement in showing she could make an action movie as well as any man was perhaps, but probably not, underscored by a brief scene in which leading man Keanu Reeves gets a savage beatdown from a naked young woman.
Point Break is a freaky mix of Dog Day Afternoon and Big Wednesday; bank robbing meets surfing. Straight-arrow rookie federal agent Johnny Utah, played by Reeves – inscrutable and husky-voiced as ever – is posted to LA, where he’s partnered-cute with an older and irascible officer.

Keanu Reeves has played many characters in film but John Wick is arguably the most iconic. Director Chad Stahelski revealed how hard they pushed back against studio executives who demanded a clean-shaven protagonist.
The John Wick franchise is now ten years old and there's no sign it's losing steam. John Wick died in Chapter 4, but an upcoming spinoff confirmed Keanu Reeves is reprising the role. Ballerina takes place during the events of Parabellum, which follows Wick on the run after killing a member of the High Table. The character embodies the hero archetype but is rough around the edges; in an interview with Business Insider, director Chad Stahelski confirmed they wanted Reeves to look the part and grow out his beard. However, studio executives wanted Reeves immediately recognizable to fans, and especially to international audiences.

Keanu Reeves is often known for his badass characters on screen and his kind-hearted nature off-screen. The actor has often won the Internet with his humane nature, which involved gifting his stunt team watches, helping crew members financially, and being respectful to his female co-stars.
However, the Internet’s darling has received one criticism which should have ruined his career. Reeves’ range has been described as limited and he has received criticism that he only plays himself in his film. The John Wick star mentioned that he would have a quote based on the Bill & Ted franchise on his gravestone as he received criticisms for it.

What is it about Speed that always keeps people coming back for more? Now celebrating its third decade as one of the greatest action films ever made, Jan de Bont’s positively explosive bare bones rush hour movie is a rare case of an enduring Hollywood classic, with insanely bankable stars, that hasn’t been re-upped, remade or rebooted to death.
30 years on, it has spawned a wealth of imitators, a legion of die-hard fans (50Mph podcast we see you) and an entire legacy of super straightforward, super effective action cinema. But really only one legitimate sequel. So, what happened? How did such an influential movie falter? Why is an IP-hungry Hollywood, that’s somehow so starved it’s willing to bankroll a 9-figure stuntman movie based on an ancient and barely remembered ’80s TV show, so Speed-phobic? And most importantly of all, is the original still just as good as you remember it?...

After playing the role of James Dalton in the cult-classic film Road House, Patrick Swayze moved on to other career opportunities. Fresh off the action film and moving away from the image Dirty Dancing painted of him, the actor starred in a movie that would change his image in the film industry in the best of ways. The actor joined the cast of Point Break, the film that put Keanu Reeves on the map.

Los Angeles’ iconic seaside diner Patrick’s Roadhouse at the edge of Pacific Palisades may have slung its last hash brown.
Amid a long-term lease negotiation, and after the financial battering of the pandemic, the half-century-old restaurant just off Pacific Coast Highway, known for its bright green exterior and kitsch décor, is attempting to raise $250,000 for back rent and building improvements as it holds discussions with potential new business partners about the possibility of a return.
While off the radar of industry cognoscenti in recent years, it had long been an unpretentious lure for A-listers like Johnny Carson, Sean Penn and Lucille Ball as well as execs including Jeffrey Katzenberg and onetime Paramount Pictures president Ned Tanen. Its most important Hollywood connection, though, may be its namesake: the seasoned character actor Patrick Fischler, son of the original owner Bill Fischler, who has since died.

Four Patrick Swayze movies have been remade Some, such as Point Break (2015), take a misguided approach to beloved classics. Others, such as Road House (2024), arguably improve upon the original
Although Patrick Swayze starred in some of the 80s and 90s most iconic action, drama, and romance movies, remakes of the actor's many hits haven't always lived up to expectations. In a career that spanned four decades, Swayze featured in more than 30 films, as well as many more television shows and specials. Given this record, it's understandable that some of his more iconic projects have been revisited over the years – irrespective of the success the reboots have enjoyed. However, while many of Swayze's movies explore themes that warrant further exploration, some remakes have been better than others.

Keanu Reeves has made his way through a stellar career playing nice guy, dog-loving heroes that we love to root for. From Neo in The Matrix to Jack Traven in Speed, from John Wick to Johnny Utah in Point Break, and from the titular Constantine to the legendary Ted "Theodore" Logan — one-half of the lovable thrash rockers in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure —, it's safe to say that we love to love Keanu. So, when he pops up in an outlier role in a movie that may have flown under your radar, we are ready to bring it to your attention. The year was 2000 and the film was a southern gothic offering called The Gift. It was directed by horror legend Sam Raimi, written by Billy Bob Thornton, and stars Cate Blanchett (way before she was considered an Oscar lock for every role she takes). Johnny Utah from Point Break could have become John Wick, transitioning from law enforcement to contract killing. Groundhog Day and Midnight in Paris may exist in a shared universe with temporal irregularities all over the world. Quentin Tarantino's alternative history might put Inglourious Basterds and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood in the same timeline.
Big franchises with shared universe have become more common in Hollywood movies recently, but there are some less obvious links between films which could be far more interesting. The MCU is the biggest example of a shared cinematic universe, but Star Wars, Star Trek, and more franchises have been hopping on the trend with interconnected spinoffs and prequels. However, the possibility that other movies could be secretly linked is just as exciting. Movies selected for TV need to be fun from the beginning and easily enjoyed in small chunks. The best movies for TV have a dedicated cast and gripping action that keeps audiences engaged. Cable TV frequently plays old favorites like "Jurassic Park" and "Home Alone" that have broad appeal and memorable moments.
TV channels tend to select the movies that they play from the same handful of old favorites, and some of them are great for multiple rewatches. Since the advent of streaming services, people have been watching movies on cable TV much less often, so the specific art of selecting movies for TV has waned. Not every great movie can succeed on TV, but when the right movie is on at the right time, people will drop everything they are doing to watch it.

Arriving at the tail end of the machismo-laden action movie boom of the 1980s, Kathryn Bigelow’s Point Break represented a different kind of blockbuster. As Gus Van Sant did the same year with My Own Private Idaho and the Wachowskis would do with their Matrix films, Bigelow foregrounds the androgynous qualities of Keanu Reeves, presenting his rookie F.B.I. agent Johnny Utah as a lithe, sensitive soul who infiltrates a gang of bank robbers not through a projection of strength but an appeal to the criminals’ own, surprisingly delicate natures.
The film begins with Johnny arriving at the F.B.I.’s Los Angeles branch for his first assignment. There, he’s greeted and immediately insulted by the director (John C. McGinley), whose strict rules for personal conduct and mirthless commitment to the job paint him as one of the dying relics of the service’s original, Hoover-led era. The other agents,...

Given how outlandish and enormous the "Fast & Furious" film series would eventually become, it's a little mind-boggling to remember that Rob Cohen's 2001 original, "The Fast and the Furious," was little more than a mid-budget "Point Break" knockoff. The story goes that star Paul Walker, having enjoyed working with Cohen on the 2000 college thriller "The Skulls" was asked what his dream action project would be. Walker said that he wanted to appear in an action movie mashup of "Days of Thunder" and "Donnie Brasco." That is: something with fast cars, but also a cop who goes undercover to infiltrate the criminal underground. The subsequent screenplay, written by Gary Scott Thompson, drew inspiration from a 1998 article in Vibe Magazine all about the New York underground racing scene. David Ayer was brought in to work on a draft, and he changed the setting to Los Angeles and made the cast more diverse.

Point Break is widely considered one of the greatest action movies ever made. Kathryn Bigelow’s epic 1991 action film is getting a gorgeous 4K restoration courtesy of Shout Factory, which should make the movie look better than ever. Speaking as a fan, I can’t wait to get my hands on a 4K version of the film to watch Keanu Reeves’ Johnny Utah infiltrate a team of bank-robber surfers in ultra-high definition. I genuinely feel like it’s one of the best movies of its era, with the late, great Patrick Swayze particularly iconic as the zen master surf guru/ bank robber Bodhi.
A little while ago, the movie was remade terribly, in an iteration I humbly refer to as Point Fake (I’m surprised that never caught on). I think folks have mostly forgotten that movie by now, and with Keanu Reeves still dominating the action genre with John Wick,...

“Utah, get me two!” Sure, Angelo’s (Gary Busey) appetite for those hot, delicious meatball sandwiches allowed the Ex-Presidents to get away during their first encounter. But the quote is just so apropos as the hit movie Point Break (1991) is set to receive the 4K Uhd and Blu-ray treatment from the Shout! Factory. So, why is it that fans of the Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze classic might want two copies? Well, Best Buy is also offering a special-edition SteelBook with an exclusive cover. Check out both the Best Buy artwork and the Shout!

Keanu Reeves has appeared in numerous successful films, including franchises like The Matrix and John Wick, but also has standalone hits. Movies like Point Break and My Own Private Idaho have potential for sequels, given their cult following and Reeves' versatile talent. Reeves' involvement in films like The Replacements and Something's Gotta Give could lead to intriguing sequels that explore new storylines and characters.

A former bank robber praises Point Break for its depiction of the tension in a robbery situation, giving the movie a perfect 10 out of 10 rating, despite some of its flaws. The movie's depiction of robbers yelling at customers and making them lie on the floor is unrealistic, and would likely deter potential customers from entering the bank. Point Break's portrayal of robbers wearing masks may alert people that a robbery is about to take place, whereas wearing glasses and a hat would provide more element of surprise.

Temuera Morrison stars as Frank, a local mobster in the upcoming action-thriller Sons of Summer, on the hunt for a surfer and his friends after they steal heroin from him. The movie puts a twist on the Point Break formula by having the central character, Sean, be a surfer who makes a major mistake, rather than an undercover agent. Sons of Summer offers a mix of beachfront action, surfing stunts, and crime, promising excitement for audiences who miss the days of watching Reeves and Swayze ride the Southern California coast.

It’s hard to believe today, after Speed and four Matrix movies, and four John Wick movies, but there
was a time when Keanu Reeves was not considered viable as an action star, especially after his portrayal
of lovable time-traveling doofus Ted Theodore Logan in Bill & Ted’S Excellent Adventure.
But that perception radically changed in 1991 with the adrenaline extravaganza Point Break, which
featured Reeves as an FBI agent hot on the trail of some bank-robbing surfers led by Patrick Swayze. But how exactly did this preposterous combination ever reach the beach? Grab your board and catch a wave as we find out Wtf Happened to this movie!
The idea for Point Break first surfaced in the mind of filmmaker Rick King [The Killing Time] after he
saw a newspaper article declaring Los Angeles as the bank-robbing capital of America thanks to the
getaway convenience provided by the city’s numerous freeways.

Keanu Reeves is commonly considered one of the kindest, most thoughtful actors in Hollywood, and plenty of stories support this claim. The actor, best known for his roles as Neo in The Matrix, John Wick in the John Wick films, and Johnny Utah in Point Break, has been a Hollywood icon for decades. The star’s work ethic, which has seen Reeves learning new skills for several roles, along with his quiet charisma and apparent agelessness, has secured the star some of the most high-profile and high-paying film roles in memory. However, he remains astonishingly grounded and thoughtful.
Keanu Reeves himself has by no means had an easy life. A difficult upbringing, losing some loved ones and seeing others struggle with disease would be enough to turn anyone jaded and unfriendly. However, Reeves seems to have chosen to bring positivity into the world, whether by going out of his way to be friendly to fans,...

(Welcome to Movies Are Gay, a Pride Month series where we explore the intentional, or accidental, ways Lgbtqia+ themes, characters, and creatives have shaped cinema.)
I knew "Point Break" was gay before I ever saw it. I came to Kathryn Bigelow's 1991 action flick decades late, after stumbling across a Twitter thread in which someone posed a thrilling question to bisexual men specifically: what movie do you consider your queer awakening? I clicked through the replies expecting a variety of answers, but was surprised to see one title again and again: "Point Break."
To be fair, even if I hadn't had the heads up, I would've caught onto the simmering homoeroticism of "Point Break" pretty quickly. The movie, which is currently streaming on Pluto TV, walks the fine line between camp and serious action, drama, and romance, and does so beautifully. Keanu Reeves‘s films are well-known for their thrilling and captivating nature. I recall being a teenager and experiencing his magnetic performance in “The Matrix” for the first time. When Rob Cohen made "The Fast and the Furious" in 2001, he couldn't possibly have known that it would eventually spawn one of the largest film franchises of all time. The original film was downright modest, even wispy, when compared to some of the more recent chapters in the overblown "Furious" franchise. In it, an LAPD cop named Johnny Utah ... er, I mean Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker) goes undercover in the strange and ultra-cool world of surfers ... er, I mean L.A. street racers to track down and arrest their ringleader Bodhi ... er, I mean Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) for a recent rash of high-profile thefts. Michelle Rodriguez appeared as Letty, Dom's girlfriend, and Jordana Brewster played Mia, Dom's sister and Brian's would-be paramour.
Over the course of the film's many sequels, Letty and Mia would eventually play larger and larger parts in the story and finally be allowed to do more than fall in love,...

Not only are there few franchises bigger in the history of popular cinema than "Fast & Furious," but the so-called Fast Saga may also be the most unlikely multi-billion-dollar enterprise that Hollywood has ever created. A series of movies about street racing and (relatively) petty crime miraculously morphed into a grand, globe-trotting saga boasting an A-list ensemble cast of talent. For years, the tip of that pyramid was doubly headed up by Vin Diesel's Dom Toretto and Paul Walker's Brian O'Connor, dating back to 2001's "The Fast and the Furious."
Sadly, Walker passed away during the production of 2015's "Furious 7," marking the end of an incredibly promising career far too soon. But the saying "the show must go on" certainly applied here, with Dom and the gang soldiering on without Walker's Brian O'Connor in the years since the actor's tragic death. Movie producers usually take out cast insurance on their stars to protect themselves and the production against potential costs, should an accident or some other unfortunate event prevent the actors from filming. Though Tom Cruise has developed a reputation for doing his own death-defying stunts — to the point where he'll even casually stand on a flying plane for a simple promo — he's the exception to the rule. Producers and studios generally don't want stars on the outside of planes, even when their role calls for it, as was the case on "Point Break."
The original "Point Break," starring Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves, involves a fair amount of thrill-seeking behavior, such as surfing and, yes, skydiving. Reeves plays Johnny Utah, a quarterback-turned-fbi-agent with a bad knee who infiltrates a group of mask-wearing bank robbers, the Ex-Presidents, led by Swayze's mononymous Bodhi.

The cast of One True Loves includes a combination of blockbuster movie stars and Broadway talents in a story of three characters who unexpectedly find themselves in a complicated love triangle. Based on the novel of the same name by Taylor Jenkins Reid (Daisy Jones & the Six), the romantic drama follows a woman torn between her thought-dead husband and her new fiancé. It's like a gender-swapped remake of the Cary Grant and Irene Dunne classic My Favorite Wife, minus the screwball comedy antics, and One True Loves is similarly hinged on the appeal of its casting.
While not filled with household names, especially compared to previous movies directed by Andy Fickman (Playing With Fire), which were led by the likes of Dwayne Johnson, John Cena, and Bette Midler, the main and supporting cast of One True Loves consists of recognizable actors from some of the biggest entertainments of the past decade.

Hollywood was in the midst of its Brat Pack fervor when the director/screenwriter team of Tim Hunter and Neil Jimenez jolted moviegoers with "River's Edge." It was the grimy, dead-souled antithesis to John Hughes' peppy tales of suburban woe. The Northern California high schoolers in Hunter's film are dead-enders who, aware of their paltry worth to society, have little value for human life. When their friend John (Daniel Roebuck) claims he's murdered his girlfriend Jamie (Danyi Deats) and takes them to see her nude corpse, which he's discarded like a dog toy next to a riverbank, they do not recoil in horror. They are at most dumbstruck, and at worst eager to aid John in covering up the crime.
We should be shocked by their lack of revulsion, but Hunter lets us hang out with these kids for a good 15 minutes before taking us to Jamie. They're future burnouts...

The "John Wick" movies are a whirring, modern carnival of spectacular stunt work. They're a hyped-up throwback to the old days of Hollywood action filmmaking when audiences were pinned to their seats as Hal Needham launched a car over a ravine or Dar Robinson plummeted 220 feet from a high-rise hotel. Along with the "Mission: Impossible" franchise, these films celebrate the human element of making a blockbuster. Stuntmen are precious cargo, but, my, we sure do love to watch them risk life and limb for the sake of an unforgettable set piece.

In 1991, filmmaker Kathryn Bigelow dared to ask one of cinema's most crucial questions: What's better than guys being dudes? The sprawling, manifold answer was thoroughly mapped out in "Point Break," a tale of surfing, crime capers, and concealed identities. Perhaps most of all, Bigelow's film unravels the surprising ways that an otherwise genuine human connection can disarm and delude us, presented in the central bond between undercover FBI agent Johnny Utah (Keanu Reeves in the role that would forever brand him as a "himbo") and at-large bank robber Bodhi (Patrick Swayze). Granted with a sizable hunch on behalf of the bureau, Utah...

Kathryn Bigelow's 1991 thriller "Point Break" is one of the best action movies of all time, full stop. It's a perfect blend of character and conflict, captured with beautiful sun-drenched photography and told with a propulsive editing style which always keeps things moving while never falling prey to overly quick cutting.
