Growing up in Hong Kong, the future members of the 12-member boy band Mirror had all kinds of jobs — from personal trainers to dancers and martial arts instructors. “The 12 of us did not debut from a training program,” says Edan (who, like the other members, typically goes by his first name). “We came from different places and backgrounds in Hong Kong, and so we have different strengths.”

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James became the first player to be named to 20 All-Star teams Thursday night, selected for the Western Conference as part of the league’s unveiling of the 10 starters for next month’s All-Star Game in Indianapolis.
James surpassed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the most All-Star selections in NBA history. Joining him in the West starting five are Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic, Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant, Dallas Mavericks guard Luka Dončić and Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

Shaquille O’Neal retired from the NBA 13 years ago, but he’s never lost his competitive spirit.
When he’s asked about becoming the second player in NBA history to have three retired jerseys, he asks, “Who’s first?” When he speaks about coming back to the hip-hop music scene, he commands: “I have to make sure they say, ‘Shaq is the best rapper/athlete ever.’”
His competitive nature is also the reason why he’s returning with his wild and epic pre-Super Bowl party Shaq’s Fun House, which is in its sixth year and will take place at Las Vegas’ Xs Nightclub at Wynn on Feb. 9, two days before the Big Game. “I’m a jealous competitor. The reason why we’re doing Shaq’s Fun House? I want people to say that’s the best party ever,” he explains to THR.

Few pro athletes have overcome more than Jimmy Butler. Homeless by 13. Unrecruited out of high school. Played ball at a small junior college. Landed at Marquette. Came off the bench till his junior year. Slid to 30th in the draft. Didn’t start as a rookie. Spent years banging his head against the wall in Minnesota. Today, he’s known as “Jimmy Buckets,” one of the best clutch players in the NBA who’s guided his Miami Heat to two Finals appearances. He’s a six-time All-Star and Olympic gold medalist.

In the 1979 film Stalker, the eponymous Stalkers are informal, illegal guides to a blighted Zone somewhere in Eastern Europe. In the middle of the Zone, it is said, there is a room that grants the true heart’s desire. And we learn, secondhand, about the tale of one Stalker named Porcupine.
Porcupine brought his brother into the Zone, where he perished in an accident. Porcupine, grieving, entered the room, expecting that his brother would be brought back to life. When he arrived back in civilization, though, he unexpectedly came into a bunch of money.

There are certain things you can count on. The sun rises in the East. The house always wins. A watched pot never boils.
Add one more to that list: The San Antonio Spurs were always going to tab 19-year-old French talent Victor Wembanyama as the first pick in the 2023 NBA draft. The 7-foot, 5-inch center was heralded as the best prospect since LeBron James, the league’s all-time scorer.
The real intrigue unfolded during the rest of round one at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY.
With Wembanyama a foregone conclusion, the No. 2 pick by the Charlotte Hornets was the subject of speculation. Trade rumors and talk that the team would take a guard were ended when the team took Alabama’s 6-9 forward Brandon Miller.
That left the Portland Trailblazers on the clock at No. 3. That pick had also been severely scrutinized, with the team’s star guard Damian Lillard...

Alas, En Vogue couldn’t hold on, and this time, it was Shaggy. Both 1990s artists were eliminated on Wednesday night during the Round 3 finales of this season’s “The Masked Singer.”
The En Vogue trio of Terry Ellis, Cindy Herron and Rhona Bennett were unmasked as the Queen Cobra, while Shaggy was revealed to be the Space Bunny.
For Queen Cobra, Nicole Scherzinger figured out it was En Vogue, and Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg agreed. Robin Thicke thought it was another 90s R&b group, Swv; and Ken Jeong went big with the more contemporary combo of Ariana Grande/Jessie J/Nicki Minaj.
As for Space Bunny, Thicke was correct with Shaggy, and Scherzinger agreed. McCarthy Wahlberg thought it was Sean Kingston and Ken Jeong guessed Owen Wilson.

With the NBA still on the outs with China and Nike hit with Chinese backlash over Xinjiang, it might seem that “Space Jam: A New Legacy” has two serious fouls against its chances of entering the world’s largest film market.
But signs indicate that Beijing may uniquely embrace the “Space Jam” star LeBron James in a way that could actually give the film an assist, despite China’s ongoing spat with the league and James’ lifetime Nike deal.
The Malcolm D. Lee-directed film debuted in U.S. cinemas and on HBO Max on July 16. If it ever releases, it will hit China at least a month later, significantly depressing returns.
The NBA’s China troubles date back to 2019 when Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey tweeted in support of pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong, infuriating Beijing and leading state broadcaster CCTV to banish the league from its airwaves.

In comments made to TMZ, Pytka revealed that it actually took him five different sittings to finish “A New Legacy,” rather than watching it all in one two-hour period. His biggest problem with it was mostly its protagonist, LeBron James. In Pytka’s eyes, James didn’t bring enough heart or reality to the film.
“The truth is that LeBron ain’t Michael,” Pytka said.
Then came the matter of star power. Though Pytka noted that Mj’s story in “Space Jam” was clearly based in his actual life — specifically the time period where he temporarily quit basketball to take up major league baseball — lending it more emotional credibility,...

In 2019, a documentary about the making of 2 Chainz’ Rap or Go to the League was released to the rap public. The documentary features LeBron James as a faux A&r guy, directing Tity Boi on how many tracks he should put on the record. LeBron talks to Chainz about his idea of releasing a deluxe version of the album two weeks later as if he invented fire. “Thank you for taking this ride with me. Here’s two more.” It was hilarious, goofy, and completely in earnest: LeBron was doing...

Just call him The King of the box office.
LeBron James, citing Anthony D’Alessandro’s Deadline story touting the box office success of his new film, Space Jam: A New Legacy, had a simple message for those who didn’t believe the film would do well: “Hi Haters!” It was accented with a grinning emoji.
The film is poised end the weekend at No. 1 at the box office, its $32 million opening, beating out the Marvel film Black Widow.
James’s film is the sequel to 1996’s Michael Jordan-led Space Jam and is also available on HBO Max.
Also appearing in the sequel are NBA stars Anthony Davis, Damian Lillard, Nneka Ogwumike, Diana Taurasi and Klay Thompson.

The gang’s all here. Not just LeBron James and a cadre of actors and athletes ranging from Don Cheadle and Steven Yeun and Sarah Silverman and Lil Rel Howery (with a little voice acting action by way of Rosario Dawson) to Nneka Ogwumike and Damian Lillard and Chiney Ogwumike and Kyrie Irving — though that, in itself, is quite a gang.

It took 25 years, but Space Jam is finally getting a sequel, while Escape Room gets a less long awaited sequel after just 2.5 years. Space Jam: A New Legacy is the week’s biggest new release, and the NBA/Looney Tunes mashup is another of Warner’s HBO Max simul-releases. Continuing with the summer’s streak of horror films is the theatrical exclusive Escape Room: Tournament of Champions from Sony. Both films are about extraordinary competitions, but they will have a hard time competing with Black Widow, which enters its second weekend.
Directed by Malcolm D. After an exhibition loss to Nigeria over the weekend shocked the basketball world, the U.S. Men’s Olympic team lost another exhibition game on Monday, this time to Australia.
Now, these are just exhibition games ahead of the Tokyo Olympics. They don’t officially count for anything. But winning has come to seem like the U.S. Team’s birthright. It is the most successful team in international competition ever, winning medals in all 18 Olympic tournaments it has entered, including 15 golds. Given that record, dropping exhibition games to Australia and Nigeria is surprising.
It’s even more surprising when one considers that the U.S. is led by Kevin Durant, roundly considered to be either the best or the second-best player on the planet, while Australia is fronted by Patty Mills, an Austrlian-born pro who rides the bench for the San Antonio Spurs.

Team USA basketball is used to rolling out the balls and taking home a victory in its Olympics games. The team was 39-0 in its last three Olympic seasons, including exhibitions.
Make that 39-1 after Saturday night. That’s when upstart Team Nigeria smacked a US team led by all-world forward Kevin Durant by the score of 90-87. It was only an exhibition game, but it sends a message that Olympics gold is not guaranteed for a US squad led by some of the NBA’s greats.
Team USA had to feel confident heading into the game. The US has beaten Nigeria by 127 points in its last two meetings, one at the 2012 London Olympics, the other a warm-up exhibition for the 2016 Rio games.
But the Nigerian team, made up mostly of fringe NBA players with a few college stars, wasn’t having it.

When director Malcolm D. Lee thinks of the soundtrack to the original Space Jam, he sees a cultural turning point. “It came at a time when soundtracks for movies were just exploding, particularly when it came to African-American music — hip-hop and R&b,” he says. “So I would say that we had a high bar to reach.”

Warner Bros. and HBO Max have released the first trailer for “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” the sequel to the blockbuster 1996 comedy that featured NBA superstars alongside Looney Tunes characters. Stepping into Michael Jordan’s kicks this time around is LeBron James, who spearheaded the title’s return under his production company SpringHill Entertainment. Though he played a comedic role in Amy Schumer’s “Trainwreck,” “Space Jam 2” marks his first foray into leading man territory, where he plays a fictionalized version of himself in the live-action/animated sports comedy.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read ahead if you have not watched Season 4, Episode 8 of “The Masked Singer,” which aired Nov. 18 on Fox.
“The Masked Singer” went with a double elimination on Wednesday night, unmasking two contestants in the process: Basketball star Lonzo Ball, who had been disguised as the “Whatchamacalit,” and viral sensation “Dr. Elvis” Francois, the so-called “singing surgeon” who became famous in the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic. (Watch the unmaskings below.)
Ken Jeong, a huge basketball fan, was the only panelist to figure out that Whatchamacalit was Ball.
The rest of the panel also went heavy with sports names: Robin Thicke picked Michael Strahan; Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg’s guess was Devin Booker; while Nicole Scherzinger guessed Carmelo Anthony. Guest panelist Cheryl Hines thought it was her “Curb Your Enthusiasm” co-star Jb Smoove.
