After the Biden administration issued a final rule last week that would require airlines to automatically issue refunds to passengers whose flights are delayed or canceled, four lawmakers bankrolled by the airline industry introduced must-pass legislation that could undermine the effort.
As The Lever reported, the lawmakers — Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), Rep. Sam Graves (R-Mo.), and Rep. Rick Larsen (D-Wash.) — introduced a new Federal Aviation Administration reauthorization deal that would require passengers to send a “written or electronic request” in order to receive a full...

The following month, “The Daily Show” will set up shop in Chicago for the Democratic National Convention from August 19 to August 22.

Ari Wallach has made his living as a professional futurist for more than 20 years. What does that mean?
“I work with really large organizations, mostly helping them think about tomorrow — the far-off tomorrows,” Wallach explains on the latest episode of Variety podcast “Strictly Business.”
Wallach’s forward-looking intellect is on display in the new PBS docuseries “A Brief History of the Future,” which premiered April 3 on PBS in the U.S. He hosts the series and is an executive producer with Kathryn Murdoch, Wendy Schmidt and DreamCrew, the production banner headed by hip hop superstar Drake. Wallach and Murdoch are partners in Futurific Studios, which makes its debut with “Brief History.” The six-part series studies inventors, entrepreneurs, activists, artists and others who are pursuing innovative solutions to a range of social ills. President Joe Biden hoped to shore up a Democratic “blue wall” as he announced millions of dollars for projects in Milwaukee during his campaign stop in Wisconsin – but his new, tougher rhetoric against his opponent, Donald Trump, got most of the attention.
Biden was beginning a two-day swing through Wisconsin and Michigan in Milwaukee as he attempted to shore up a Democratic “blue wall” and build momentum for his re-election campaign after a fiery State of the Union address in early March.
To show voters that his administration has made their lives better, Biden used this campaign stop to announce $3.3 billion for infrastructure projects in underprivileged communities, including $36 million to reattach parts of Milwaukee’s 6th Street, which was divided due to highway construction in the 60s.

Inspired by, but definitely not closely adapted from, Amy Chozick’s 2018 book Chasing Hillary, The Girls on the Bus may be on Max, but it’s a throwback to a certain type of broad, big-hearted, semi-topical dramedy that TV fans used to associate with The WB.
As a female-forward workplace buddy comedy with soapy undertones, The Girls on the Bus (Chozick and The Vampire Diaries mastermind Julie Plec are credited as creators) is quite good — the casting is strong, the character dynamics appealing. As a show about journalism, The Girls on the Bus is decent — smart about a lot of things, dumb about others, but not disproportionately. As a political thriller, The Girls on the Bus is mostly a crock.
It comes together as a whole that’s not really a guilty pleasure — for the millionth time, stop being guilty about the things you like — but definitely one where you...

Update, 5:53 a.m. Pt, Wednesday: The “uncommitted” vote in Michigan’s Democratic primary garnered about 13.2% of the vote, while President Joe Biden received more than 81%, according to the latest results.
As huge of a victory as that is, the protest campaign to cast ballots for “uncommitted” drew more than 100,000 votes.
While progressives and moderates debate the significance of the protest vote — largely of Biden’s support for Israel in the war in Gaza — overlooked is what happened further down the ballot. Marianne Williamson, the self-help figure who had dropped out of the race, actually got more votes that Rep. Dean Phillips (D-mn), who was still in. She announced that she was “unsuspending” her campaign, even though she and Phillips were in the low single digits — also were beaten by the “uncommitted” vote.
In the GOP primary, Nikki Haley was drawing about 27% to Donald Trump’s 68%. Although Haley’s share...

Apple Vision Pro, a $3,500 mixed reality headset with strong “Google Glass 2.0” vibes, is now on sale, and it has already proved as divisive as its failed predecessor. On one side are the multitude of haters dismissing the bulky computer goggles as “stupid.” On the other is an army of tech influencers and Apple zealots who don’t mind looking stupid as long as they get to feel like the hero of a sci-fi movie (while racking up social media engagement).

Donald Trump’s victory in the New Hampshire primary Tuesday may have been driven by record turnout, but viewership across the three major news networks was way down from four years ago, with primetime coverage averaging almost 6 million.
In 2020, almost 8.7 million watched the coverage of the primary, which focused on the race for the Democratic nomination.
That’s still better than the 4.67 million who watched the coverage of the Iowa caucuses on the networks last week, when networks went up against an NFL playoff game and the Emmy Awards.
Fox News topped this year’s primetime New Hampshire coverage, averaging 3.26 million, compared to 1.75 million for MSNBC and 994,000 for CNN. In the 25-54 demo, Fox News averaged 453,000, followed by CNN with 246,000 and MSNBC with 237,000.
Peak viewership came in the 8-9 p.m. Et hour, when networks called the race for Trump. Fox News averaged 3.91 million, followed by MSNBC with 1.98 million and CNN with 1.25 million.

As Donald Trump was about to step on stage on Sunday for another rally to tout the endorsement of another former rival, Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley was about 30 miles south in New Hampshire, at a rally at Exeter High School, where a celebrity figure and daytime fixture was lending her support: Judge Judy.
On stage to a room full of enthusiastic supporters, Haley called Judy Sheindlin, whose daily courtroom show made her one of the most famous women on TV, a “trailblazer” who is “tough” and “speaks hard truths” and “doesn’t mince words.”
“I will tell you for all of those endorsements you talk about, those are the endorsements that matter, the ones where they’re going to tell you the truth even if you don’t want to hear it, and they are going to tell you why, and it’s a combination of brains and heart,” Haley said.

When Los Angeles voters head to the polls March 5 and again in the November general election, President Biden won’t have to sweat the results here and across the state. Nearly twice as many Californians are registered Democrat as they are Republican. In 2020, 71 percent of L.A. County voters picked Biden.
But Los Angeles remains popular for Democrats for reasons beyond ballot counting — it’s a fountain of campaign cash, much of it spouting from the entertainment industry. Consider that clutch of December fundraisers where co-hosts and attendees included such glossy names as Steven Spielberg, Shonda Rhimes, Jon Hamm and Barbra Streisand. The events may have taken place amid some grumbling over lagging poll numbers and questions about whether the octogenarian commander-in-chief can woo young voters, but ultimately the wallets opened wide. Media reports put the take from the soirees at about $15 million, a hefty part of the $97 million the campaign on Jan.

The foreword of the book The Revivalist Manifesto, written by House Speaker Mike Johnson, has come under scrutiny, along with his subsequent promotion of the book on social media and his podcast.
Authored by local Louisiana political blogger Scott McKay, the book espouses baseless conspiracy theories embraced by the far-right, such as the debunked “Pizzagate” hoax which alleged Democratic officials’ involvement in a trafficking ring.
The book makes unsubstantiated claims, such as the implication that Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts was blackmailed and connected to disgraced trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. Additionally, the book defends podcaster Joe Rogan from racism charges after it was revealed that he used racial slurs. It goes on to disparage poor voters.
Johnson’s 300-word foreword praises McKay’s book as a valuable contribution that resonates with “freedom-loving Americans.”

Hawaii resident Cayla Farris, 49, paid American Airlines almost $40,000 after an incident on a February 13, 2022 flight from Phoenix to Honolulu.
According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the District of Arizona, Farris engaged in disruptive behavior, utilizing profanity and making threats toward the flight crew and fellow passengers.
The crew could not continue their duties, forcing the captain to return to Phoenix, resulting in several other flights being rerouted to Hawaii.
She pleaded guilty to her disruptive behavior on September 12.
Farris has been sentenced to three months in prison, followed by three years of supervised probation and has to pay $38,952 to the airline. Additionally, Farris is restricted from traveling by commercial aircraft without prior approval during her probationary period.

Earlier, Leguizamo told a reporter that he “definitely” would be hitting the campaign trail for Joe Biden in 2024.
Asked about Biden’s outreach to Latino voters, Leguizamo said, “I think he’s doing the right things, which is getting Latin consulatns and talking to Latin experts who tell him how to address us, and make the effort. Is unity possible? This simple question launched the Brooklyn-based band The Bergamot on a quest to all 50 States to unite people with music, community, and collaboration. State of the Unity is a documentary film about the band's journey - and it will be released this fall after playing at film festivals throughout 2022 and 2023. It's directed by band members Nathaniel Paul Hoff and Jillian Ann Speece, and also feeatures Dr. David Hooker, Marcy Kaptur, and Patrick Ashton, with appearances by Pete Buttigieg and Chansi Stuckey. Back in 2016, Brooklyn-based band, The Bergamot embarked on a timely journey to perform in all 50 States while inviting people to sign their message of unity onto their station wagon (known as "The Unity Car"). What ensued is a heartwarming tale of human perseverance, empathy and understanding during one of the most polarizing times in American history. After Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle requested to fly back to the U.S. with President Joe Biden on Air Force One but were denied by the White House. The reason cited was that Biden’s staff thought it might not be appropriate or would upset some members of the Royal Family due to the controversy surrounding the couple.
If the Sussexes were allowed to fly on the plane, another issue would have been who would pay for their ride. The creators of the show Peaky Blinders slammed Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) for using a clip from their show without permission in a controversial anti-gay ad.
Creators are claiming copyright violation as DeSantis used a scene with Cillian Murphy‘s character Tommy Shelby without a license.
Peaky Blinders released a statement on their Twitter account writing, “On behalf of the partners of Peaky Blinders – Steven Knight, Cillian Murphy, Caryn Mandabach Productions, Tiger Aspect Productions and Banijay Rights – we confirm the footage of Tommy Shelby’s character used within the video posted by Ron DeSantis’ campaign was obtained without permission or official license. Florida governor and Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis stirred up a hornet’s nest of controversy when he unveiled a campaign ad that’s been criticized as an outright attack on the LGBTQ+ community.
In the ad, DeSantis slams ex-potus Donald Trump for not being hateful enough, mocking him for his earlier vow to “protect our LGBTQ citizens” in the bizarre video, which is intercut with a series of imagery, ranging from oiled-up bodybuilders to Cillian Murphy’s Tommy Shelby in “Peaky Blinders”.
That latter image has raised the hackles of the people behind the Netflix hit, with the show’s official Twitter account serving DeSantis and his campaign with an unofficial cease and desist over their unauthorized use of a clip from the show.

Pete Buttigieg, the first openly gay transportation secretary, criticized Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) for posting an anti-lgbt video trying to mock Donald Trump – and seemingly trying to prove his own masculinity.
The video was posted on Twitter by the DeSantis War Room on Friday. This first part of the video focuses on Trump and the promises he made to the LGBT community.
It features short clips including one where Trump promised that he would “do everything in my power to protect our LGBTQ citizens,” which Trump said after the shooting at the gay nightclub, Pulse Nightclub, in Florida. Throughout the first portion of the video, the LGBTQ flag is seen numerous times, and references to celebrities who are trans, including Caitlyn Jenner, are featured.
The second part of the clip shows pictures of DeSantis and shirtless men seemingly in an attempt to portray DeSantis as more masculine than Trump.

Lindsey Graham was booed by Trump supporters at a rally for the former President that took place Saturday in Pickens, South Carolina, the county in which Graham grew up.
The crowd started showing their discontent for the Republican lawmaker before he even took the stage, booing his walk up to the platform in downtown Pickens.
The booing continued as Graham thanked the crowd for showing up, and did not tamper down when he asked the crowd, “Well, you want to find something in common?” Attempting to find a break between the boos and “We want Trump” chants, Graham asked the group to “Calm down for a second,” as he recited a brief history of Pickens County.

Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg took aim at Ron DeSantis’ latest attack ad against Donald Trump on CNN on Sunday, throwing in a pointed jab about the “strangeness” of the Florida governor splicing images of himself “in between oiled-up, shirtless bodybuilders.”
Republican presidential hopeful DeSantis released a video on Friday attacking Trump for the former president’s pro-lgbtq stances and policies in the past, which then cuts together “hero” images of DeSantis alongside “manly” images that include, for some reason, bodybuilders, Brad Pitt in “Troy” (twice), Leonardo DiCaprio in “Wolf of Wall Street” and Christian Bale as psychopathic serial killer Patrick Bateman in “American Psycho.”
While appearing on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Buttigieg was asked for his reaction to the ad, and he didn’t hold back.

The rollout of 5G wireless signals on July 1 may mean older planes could be banned from takeoff or landing, throwing travel schedules into chaos just before the massive exodus for the July 4 holiday.
The concerns stem from beliefs that the new network may interfere with radio transmissions to arriving and departing airlines.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg told the Wall Street Journal that delays and cancellations were likely. Buttigieg said only planes with the right equipment will be allowed to fly when visibility is poor.
Buttigieg’s warning arrives just before AT&T, Verizon and other carriers will be free to boost the power of their 5G signals on July 1. The boost would potentially interfere with the spectrum used by radio altimeters, used to measure the height of a plane above ground. Newer altimeters have shields for interference, but many airlines did not upgrade all of their planes.

Sitting with MSNBC’s “The Beat With Ari Melber,” Hollywood heavyweight Rob Reiner had some feedback for former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, dragging him for not having “range” as an interviewer and — worse yet — for having a “high-pitched maniacal giggle.”
In the segment seen in the video above, Melber sets up his questions for Reiner by indicating that Fox’s $787.5 million settlement with Dominion Voting Systems came to pass after what must have been a careful deliberation of which would cost the network more: settling for that gargantuan sum or taking matters to court and having Carlson and his colleagues take the stand.
“From a legal sense, journalists make mistakes. Good faith mistakes are not punished by debilitating defamation judgements — it is the dishonest, or to use the term of the art of the law, the malicious and reckless mistakes,” Melber said, adding that the settlement came as the judge “clearly…...

This weekend’s Saturday Night Live cold open sketch saw former President Donald Trump mocked for his recent visit to East Palestine, where a Nortfolk Southern train derailment released approximately 100,000 gallons of toxic chemicals into the nearby air and water.
Star cast member James Austin Johnson played Trump and mimicked a press conference the former president held to check in on the residents following the disaster – but not before mispronouncing East Palestine as the state of Palestine.
In the beginning of the skit, Johnson relayed an encounter with a hungry farmer who Trump had met earlier that day. Rather than addressing the farmer’s concerns about the poisoned dirt, however, Johnson’s Trump recommended that he eat some cold McDonald’s and drink Trump-branded water.

Actors aren’t really the characters they play in film and TV.
John Oliver relayed that message on Sunday’s Last Week Tonight in response to a comment from a Fox News pundit.
He began the latest episode of his HBO late night show by noting that both former President Donald Trump and U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg have visited East Palestine, Ohio, in the wake of a freight train derailment and toxic spill.
But, Oliver noted, that isn’t enough for some Fox News Channel personalities. He showed a clip of Fox News hosts Rachel Campos-Duffy and Jesse Watters discussing the high-profile figures who have — and haven’t — visited the Ohio town amid the disaster.
“Think about the environmental activists, and corporate America — they weren’t there,” Campos-Duffy said. “I mean, with the activists, this is an ‘Erin Brockovich’ moment. There was a blockbuster, Oscar-winning movie written about something like this.

John Oliver started off Last Week Tonight roasting Fox News for the second week in a row. The HBO Max host show started off by noting that Donald Trump and U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg attended the train derailment in Ohio.
However, over on Fox News, Jesse Watters and Rachel Campos-Duffy asked why some personalities had not visited the site in East Palestine.
“Think about the environmental activists and corporate America, they weren’t there,” Campos-Duffy said on Fox & Friends Weekend.
The Real World: San Francisco alum continued, “This is an Erin Brockovich moment. There was a blockbuster Oscar-winning movie written about something like this.”
Watters added that Brockovich was actually paying a visit to East Palestine with Campos-Duffy asking, “But where is Julia Roberts?”
Oliver’s reaction to the Fox News segment left him confused and asking what they were talking about before educating the television personalities on Roberts’s profession.

Donald Trump was skewered for his recent press conference in East Palestine, Ohio during the “Saturday Night Live” cold open. Framed as fake C-Span coverage, “SNL” featured player James Austin Johnson embodied the former president as he gave an address to local residents impacted by the recent trail derailment and toxic chemical spill in the area.
“I’ve been looking at your river, and it’s so shiny,” Johnson says, impersonating the politician. “I’ve never seen water more beautiful — beautiful rainbows and discoloration. It’s great. It’s wearing makeup, like Fenty beauty water.”
Johnson proceeds to shoutout Rihanna for her Feb. 12 halftime show at Super Bowl Lvii, commenting on her pregnancy. Regaining focus, Johnson directs blame at the man he identifies as the one true culprit: “Who do we blame? We blame Pete Buttigieg,” Johnson asserts, alluding to a congressional committee’s ongoing investigation of Buttigieg’s response to the train derailment.

Objective journalism was on trial Friday night on Bill Maher’s Real Time, with the New York Times as a focus for the discussion on whether opinion has buried news coverage.
The panel discussing this important issue included Ari Melber, host of MSNBC’s “The Beat With Ari Melber” and staff writer for The Dispatch, along with Sarah Isgur, host of “The Dispatch Podcast,” and contributor and political analyst for ABC News.
Maher started off by bringing up the revelation that broke in this week’s court filing in the Dominion Voting Systems defamation lawsuit against Fox. In the papers, it was revealed that top executives and news hosts didn’t buy into then-President Donald Trump’s allegations of 2020 election fraud, even though they give air time to those who pushed that theory.
Maher decried that as an abrogation of the rules of responsible journalism.

The hosts of “The View” clashed a bit on Friday, discussing whether President Biden should give Fox News a Super Bowl Sunday interview and follow the annual tradition of the president speaking to whichever network airs the game. Where Alyssa Farah Griffin argued he should, Sunny Hostin very much disagreed.
Just minutes before the episode of “The View” ended, it was reported that Biden would indeed be continuing his administration’s streak of not giving Fox News an interview. And for Sunny Hostin, it seemed illogical for Biden to do so anyway, especially when considering the ratings he just pulled for his second State of the Union Address this week.
“I don’t think he should. I mean, I know that it’s a tradition,” Hostin said. “The pregame show, this pre interview would only get about 20 million viewers. I think he got something like 27.3 for the State of the Union.

Update, 5:30 Pm Pacific: A corrupted file is being blamed from the massive shutdown of US air transportation this morning.
“The Faa is continuing a thorough review to determine the root cause of the Notice to Air Missions (Notam) system outage. Our preliminary work has traced the outage to a damaged database file. At this time, there is no evidence of a cyberattack. The Faa is working diligently to further pinpoint the causes of this issue and take all needed steps to prevent this kind of disruption from happening again,” the statement read.
Flights were grounded after the corrupted file was discovered in the Notam main and backup system. Flights already in the air were permitted to land.
Update: The Faa said that “normal air traffic operations are resuming” after an unusual overnight computer system outage forced the grounding of all departing flights in the United States for much of the early morning.

The White House again drew on celebrity activists as it marked another legislative milestone: Cyndi Lauper performed and spoke briefly to reporters Tuesday as President Joe Biden signed into law a bill that will protect same-sex and interracial marriage rights at the federal level.
“I came here today because I just wanted to say thank you to President Biden, Speaker Pelosi, Vice President Harris and all the advocates on his team,” Lauper told reporters in a surprise appearance in the White House briefing room. “Because for once, our families — mine and a lot of my friends, people you know, sometimes your neighbors — we can rest easy tonight because our families are validated, because we are allowed to love who we love, which sounds odd to say, but Americans can now love who we love. Bless Joe Biden and all the people who worked on this for allowing people not to worry about their future.
