This post contains spoilers for Netflix's "Fool Me Once."
Every Harlan Coben novel ends with a trademark twist. The shocking nature of these revelations usually re-contextualizes our understanding of established character motivations and leads to breakthroughs in unsolvable cases. Coben's "Fool Me Once," adapted by Netflix into an eight-episode series, employs a similar trope by introducing a twist that questions our allegiance to the central protagonist. The problem, however, is that these subversions are not backed by narrative logic and quickly fall apart once probed on a superficial level.
"Fool Me Once" is a murder mystery/thriller that opens with the death of Joe Burkett (Richard Armitage), who seems to have been shot during a street robbery gone wrong. His wife, ex-military pilot Maya Stern (Michelle Keegan), is grieving both the death of her husband and her sister, Claire (Natalie Anderson), who died over the span of a few months.

In Harlan Coben’s thriller Fool Me Once, ex-military pilot and single mom Maya Stern (Michelle Keegan) will do anything and everything to get to the bottom of her husband’s and sister’s murders. Is Maya’s army buddy Shane (Emmett J. Scanlan) the culprit? What about whistleblower Corey (Laurie Kynaston)? Hey, maybe it’s that random guy named Rambo (Connor Porter) who was there when Joe died. Read on to find out the answers to your burning questions about the series.

It’s here, the newest Netflix thriller adapted from one of Harlan Coben’s ludicrously twist-packed, secret-filled crime mystery novels. This one comes adapted by Danny Brocklehurst with the same UK team that made The Five, Safe, The Stranger and Stay Close, and once again stars Richard Armitage in a central role.
Fool Me Once is the story of military helicopter pilot Maya Stern, a captain who loses her career in a scandal and suffers two bereavements in short succession. It’s fast-paced, kind of ridiculous viewing that takes you down an extremely twisty path before tying everything up in a big not-exactly-watertight-but-it’ll-do-fine knot – which makes it pretty perfect viewing for a brain-fogged New Year’s Day after all of December’s indulgences.
Find out more about the cast of this one below, and happy binge-watching!

National Geographic's A Small Light continues tonight with another two episodes.
TV Fanatic scored an exclusive first look at what's ahead, and it looks like things are going from bad to worse for Otto Frank (Liev Schreiber).
In the clip, we see Miep (Bel Powley) speak to Otto about recent events and how things might change very soon.
Otto is worried about the Nsb officer snooping around, but Miep tries to calm him down.
With his back pushed against the wall, Otto ponders what will happen next.
It's an excellent look at the series and how Miep tries to help Otto by making him realize that he's a wonderful father and has made the right decisions.
Based on an inspiring true story, Miep Gies (Bel Powley) was young, carefree and opinionated — at a time when opinions got you killed ― when Otto Frank (Liev Schreiber) asked her to help hide his...

Thanks to The Diary of Anne Frank and the historians who’ve studied it, the world has a good sense of what happened in the Amsterdam annex where Frank and her family hid from the Nazis during World War II.
Less celebrated, however, are the people who risked their lives to facilitate the Franks’ (and friends’) two-year period of hiding. The premiere of A Small Light, which aired Monday on National Geographic, spotlights the everyday work of Dutch resistance workers by telling the story through the eyes of one of them: Miep Gies, Otto Frank’s secretary.

Bel Powley is an actor without subterfuge, which I mean only as a high compliment. I feel the same way about Florence Pugh. Their characters are still capable of lying, but neither performer can lie to the camera. When they’re miserable, it bursts through the screen. When they’re joyful, it’s contagious.
Powley is an interesting and effective choice, then, to play the lead in A Small Light, an eight-part NatGeo limited series that’s all about hiding and subterfuge. Playing an ostensibly ordinary woman who responds to an extraordinary challenge by finding the hero within, Powley sets the tone, or rather a variety of tones, for A Small Light. She brings more humor and hopeful energy than you might expect based on the topic, and underlines every emotionally crushing twist and turn you’d expect from a series adjacent to one of the most beloved and devastating stories ever told.

National Geographic has released the trailer from the upcoming eight-part limited series ‘A Small Light’. The powerful series, produced by ABC Signature and Keshet Studios, will stream on Disney+ in the U.K. on 2 May.
Based on an inspiring true story, Miep Gies (Bel Powley) was young, carefree and opinionated — at a time when opinions got you killed ― when Otto Frank (Liev Schreiber) asked her to help hide his family from the Nazis during WWII. Without hesitation, Miep agreed. For the next two years, she and her daring and devoted husband, Jan (Joe Cole), with several other everyday heroes, watched over the Frank, van Pels and Pfeffer families hiding in the secret annexe.
Told with a modern sensibility, the series shakes the cobwebs of history and makes Miep’s story feel relevant, forcing audiences to ask themselves what they would have done in Miep’s shoes; and in modern times,...

Serial killer dramas have a grimy reputation. The phrase conjures up lurid magazine headlines promising Sick! Twisted! Depravity! and Never-Seen-Before Crime Scene Photos! Think ‘true crime serial killer’, you think of Jack the Ripper tours and David from Psychoville poring over victim stats and working himself to a froth over all the gory details.
To shake off those associations and emerge as nuanced, intelligent and non-exploitative, a drama has to work hard. It has to foreground the human cost and trace a story that doesn’t revel in gore. It requires scripts that build in context and narrative balance. It needs empathy with the victims, and a central performance that captures the horrid anomaly of the killer without lending rock star glamour. Most of all, it needs a purpose other than as a ratings draw.

It’s 1993, and there’s only one way for a curvy, bright, funny, working-class sixteen year old (Beanie Feldstein) to break out of her tiny, crowded house in Wolverhampton, and go on the somehow noble sex-quest she desires – to reinvent herself as swashbuckling, top-hat-wearing rock critic Dolly Wilde, and explode all over London. The only question is – was Dolly Wilde the right girl to build?
Directed by British director Coky Giedroyć and written by Caitlin Moran, based on her beloved number one Sunday Times bestseller of the same name, the film also stars Alfie Allen, Paddy Considine, Chris O’Dowd, Emma Thompson, Sarah Solemani, Laurie Kynaston, Joanna Scanlan, Arinzé Kene, Frank Dillane, Tadhg Murphy and Ziggy Heath.

So, who’s ready for a nostalgic hop across the pond? But really, after a couple of months lockdown, who’s not up for that? And what kind of nostalgia, any particular decade? Why let’s bounce back to the wild, weird 1990s. Oh really? Now I know how my folks felt when we went crazy for the 50’s back in the late 70s. But there’s one thing all those eras have in common: rock n’ roll, or the more encompassing “pop music”. Toss in lotsa’ family drama, some “coming of age” angst, and a smidgen of snoggin’ and you’ve got this flick’s recipe. Actually it’s more of an instructions guide, but don’t let the title lure you into thinking that it’s a reboot (or “re-imagining”) of the John Hughes teen fantasy Weird Science. Nope, that’s not the gist of this self-empowerment manual...

This film adaptation of Caitlin Moran semi-autobiographical 2014 novel How To Build a Girl, about a teen rock critic who learns to grow past her own cosmetically-applied cynicism, is never as wicked, winning and bruisingly comic as it needs to be. But lead actress Beanie Feldstein is all that and more. If you haven’t yet fallen under her spell courtesy of Booksmart, Lady Bird or her singing to Stephen Sondheim during his YouTube-streamed 90th birthday celebration, here’s your chance. She gives wings to this smartass U.K. comedy set in the early 1990s,...

"How much are you prepared to pay?" Lionsgate has released an official Us trailer for the next film in the Intrigo trilogy, this one officially titled Intrigo: Dear Agnes. We featured the trilogy teaser last year, and the main trailer for Intrigo: Death of an Author earlier this year. This is the second feature film in the big screen adaptation of the mystery series. With the death of her husband, Agnes is desperate for money. Then she runs into her old friend Henny, who is enraged at her unfaithful spouse, Peter. Henny makes Agnes a shocking offer—enough cash to live a better life, if she will murder Peter and get rid of him. All this leads to an "explosive, unforgettable climax." Based on a series of short stories from Sweden, of course. This specific murder thriller stars Carla Juri, Gemma Chan, Jamie Sives, Jason Wong, Laurie Kynaston, and Cal MacAninch.

Good Omens star David Tennant is to play infamous Scottish serial killer Dennis Nilsen in an ITV drama from the makers of Sky and HBO’s Catherine The Great.
New Pictures’ three-part miniseries, Des, is based on the Brian Masters book Killing For Company, in which the author cooperated with Nilsen to get inside the mind of a man who murdered at least 15 men and boys between 1978 and 1983. Nilsen died in jail last year.
Joining Tennant is The Crown star Jason Watkins, who will play Masters, and Line Of Duty actor Daniel Mays, who features as Detective Chief Inspector Peter Jay. The story charts Nilsen’s arrest and trial, through the prism of the three men.
Des was developed by Luke Neal and Lewis Arnold, with Neal writing the first two episodes and Kelly Jones penning the third. Willow Grylls, Kim Varvell, Charlie Pattinson, Elaine Pyke, Neal, Lewis Arnold and Tennant are the executive producers.

The television adaptation of The Feed -- based on the novel by Nick Clark Windo -- immediately thrusts viewers into a sci-fi psychological thriller set in a future that feels very real and not at all distant.
Talented veteran actors make up the cast of three-dimensional characters who -- at least in the six episodes available for review -- create solid, believable arcs that posit empathetic flaws into what could very easily have become stereotypical villains types.
While stereotypical villains can be a guilty delight to watch, The Feed takes the psychological intricacies of well-intended beings doing what they feel in their hearts is right, and pushes them through ill-fated journeys of what is perceived as selfishness and greed.
Modern technology is scary; we all know glitches and hackings can be detrimental to corporate and individual security.
When the hard drives, the internet, and all forms of media are placed into heads of civilians,...

Even though she loves her big, boisterous family, Johanna yearns to get out and make a name for herself – which she does, reinventing herself as revered and feared music journalist, Dolly Wilde. But as her critical savagery brings her greater and greater success, the lines between Johanna Morrigan and Dolly Wilde begin to haze. As a young girl with aspirations to write, journalist Caitlin Moran used her hippie homeschool upbringing to enter literary competitions with potential to open industry doors. The Observer’s “Young Reporter of the Year” at fifteen eventually started her professional career the following year with Melody Maker and never looked back. Did she devolve into the nom de plume Dolly Wild to gleefully trash bands as Dm&e’s resident rock gatekeeper extraordinaire? No. But you have to imagine the opportunity to go that route was available. The financial appeal must have been great too at age sixteen because the type of comedic trolling a good writer can perform is exactly what gets global audiences in a frenzy (see social media). So she did the next best thing and imagined it instead.

Johanna Morrigan (Beanie Feldstein) is used to not seeing leading ladies like herself — goofy, a little chubby, academically inclined, friendless, super into dogs — in books or movies. Hell, she’s used to not even really seeing herself in her own life, instead whiling away her time dreaming of an existence where she might have the chance to shine. A poet, a reader, and a follower of such diverse luminaries as Sylvia Plath, Sigmund Freud, and even the fictional Jo March, Johanna has a spark, but absolutely nothing to fan it with.
While most stories like Johanna’s might get a bump from the introduction of a romantic suitor, Johanna isn’t into that either, and as she announces during the energetic introduction to Coky Giedroyc’s winning “How to Build a Girl,” her philosophy is more evolved: “I do not think my adventure starts with a boy, it starts with me.

As with any biopic centring around a popular public figure, a certain amount of artistic licence is to be expected from its makers no matter who the subject maybe. In the case of Mark Gill’s England Is Mine, the stakes are somewhat stacked even higher than usual. With an army of hardcore adoring fans, and a near God-like status amongst the music press over the last thirty years, Morrissey has had countless unauthorised biographies written about him, but until now nobody had even dared dream of basing a film on his life, and judging by the negative reaction from some of his more ardent fans, it’s easy to see why.
With a title taken from one of The Smiths most loved songs “Still Ill”, Gill and co-writer William Thacker wear their hearts on their sleeves from the get-go as two people who clearly know their Smiths mythology inside out.

Before he was the cranky king of cancelling shows, talking shit, and “bulbous salutations”, Morrissey was once an equally cranky young upstart, writing scathing music reviews, struggling to put together a band, and putting in the 10,000 hours of moping necessary to become a Malcolm Gladwell-style expert in human misery. Now, that earlier period is the subject of a new (and completely unauthorized) biopic, England Is Mine, which sees Jack Lowden play the nascent Moz.
Going off the trailer, the film is more preoccupied with how The Smiths came to be than in the band itself; Johnny Marr (Laurie Kynaston) doesn’t even show up until the final moments. Before he mesmerized people with his distinctive voice and words as lead singer of The Smiths, Morrissey was just another teenager trying to find his place in the world. The unauthorized story pitched in England Is Mine looks a wee bit familiar, but it's told with a good degree of urgency and impact in the new trailer for the film, which is heading to cinemas in the UK on 4 August. Jack Lowden stars as the young legend in the making, with Jodie Comer, Peter MacDonald, Laurie Kynaston, and Jessica Brown Findlay among the supporting cast. Mark Gill directed.
