More free streaming channels are headed to Philo this year, and the streamer might even create a free platform that won’t require the viewer to make an account.
Philo is one of The Streamable’s favorite live TV streaming platforms because it fills a need that no other service provides. Philo offers top cable entertainment channels like A&e and Lifetime in its lineup of more than 70 total networks, for a price of just $25 per month. It gives customers who don’t want to pay for channels they don’t watch a great place to enjoy their favorite content, and company CEO Andrew McCollum revealed at the 2024 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) that the service now has more than 1 million subscribers.
Philo’s 1M subscribers place it behind services like Fubo, but not by much. Crossing the 1M mark shows conclusively there is a place in the market for an entertainment-focused streamer like Philo.

Philo, which launched nationally in 2017 as a lower-cost streaming bundle of non-sports entertainment channels, has set its first original series, Boss Moves. The series features Love and Hip-Hop star Rasheeda Frost, aka Rasheeda, and is a co-production with lifestyle programmer Kin. With content across social, digital, linear and streaming platforms, Kin shows center on a diverse talent roster including Tia Mowry, Adrienne Bailon Houghton, Jeannie Mai, Malika and Khadijah Haqq, and Angela Simmons. The company last week set a separate programming deal with Chicken Soup for the Soul, a new ad-supported streaming service with an emphasis on female programming. New episodes of Boss Moves will be released for Philo subscribers each week, starting in April. While the streaming window is exclusive to Philo, the show will also be available on Kin’s social media channels. The debut season of 12 half-hour episodes will start shooting in Atlanta in the coming days.

Exclusive: Streaming bundle provider Philo TV is raising its monthly price to $25 from the $20 level where it has remained since launching commercially nearly four years ago.
The 25% increase takes effect on June 8 for all new customers, but current subscribers will be grandfathered in at $20 as long as they stay in the fold. Philo said last fall it had surpassed 800,000 total subscribers.
Along with the new pricing, the company is adding an incentive for current subscribers to upgrade and pay the extra $5 a month. It is expanding the duration of DVR storage to one year from the present limit of 30 days.
“This is something we have thought a lot about,” CEO Andrew McCollum said of the pricing change in an interview with Deadline. “We’re trying to do it in a way that’s as fair to our existing customers as possible.”

Philo, an internet-delivered pay-tv bundle, and consumer electronics retailer Best Buy have extended their partnership with a new promotion.
Under the deal, customers without an existing Philo subscription will be able to sign up to the service for $1 for the first month, a deep discount from its regular $20 price. Those looking for the dollar deal will need to buy certain devices, like Roku or Amazon Fire TV streaming sticks or smart TVs made by brands like Hisense or Westinghouse.
The promotion began today and runs through April 25.
Philo and Best Buy established a distribution relationship last September. While such pacts are fairly routine between digital, media and telecom players (think Verizon and Disney or Hulu and Spotify), the teaming was a first for Best Buy. After emerging from a fallow period a few years ago, the retailer has continued its rebound during the coronavirus pandemic. Brick-and-mortar retail is in flux,...

Hulu is cutting the price of its basic, ad-supported service for U.S. college students to $2 a month.
The regular price has been $6 for everyone since 2019, with Hulu’s ad-free tier at $12 a month.
The Disney-owned streaming operation describes the 65% discount as an “evergreen deal.” Eligible students aged 18 and older can sign up for the deal starting today, and will get the lower rate as long as they can verify they are still a student.
Streaming and college are a natural fit. Philo TV, the streaming service whose CEO is Facebook co-founder Andrew McCollum, began as an experiment at Harvard in 2009. It then expanded to college campuses nationwide before becoming a full-fledged national TV bundle service in 2017.
Many college dormitories are wired for cable and schools have long had ties with pay-tv operators. As streaming has dislodged pay-tv as a viewing source, many providers have sought to make inroads with students.

For just $20 a month, Philo offers consumers more than 60 cable channels. It’s a simple value proposition that has helped this venture stand out in a crowded marketplace of so-called virtual MVPDs. And as Philo CEO Andrew McCollum explains, he’s not about to make the mistake that has the prices of many of his competitors soaring at a time of economic hardships across the U.S.
“We have always established ourselves as a low-cost, high-value service,” said McCollum on the latest episode of the “Strictly Business” podcast. “We’re very well positioned as people are looking to control their budget and the cost of what they spend on entertainment.”
Listen to the podcast here:
Philo just passed 800,000 subscribers in its third year of operation, with a bouquet of networks heavy on cable entertainment and lifestyle, but no broadcasters, sports or major news channels like CNN. The service may be...

Best Buy has formed a strategic partnership with streaming TV bundle purveyor Philo, the first such teaming in the electronics retailer’s history.
Philo subscribers can get one month of Philo free with purchase of certain streaming devices, smart TVs and antennas at Best Buy. Alternatively, those signing up for a Philo subscription either in stores or online through Best Buy will get 50% off their first month’s bill.
It is Philo’s first partnership with a major brick-and-mortar consumer electronics retailer. As streaming has exploded in recent years, partnerships with wireless companies and other major points of distribution have been common for streaming players. Best Buy represents a different, but hardly insignificant oppportunity.
A powerhouse in the 1990s and 2000s, Best Buy has seen tougher times in recent years as all retailers face intensifying competition from Amazon and other online outlets. It has rebounded recently, reporting strong results in the second quarter.

Philo, which launched in the U.S. in 2017, has reached 750,000 subscribers to its non sports streaming bundle, up 300% in the past year.
On Wednesday, the company got a shout-out from Discovery’s David Zaslav. During an earnings call with Wall Street analysts, the CEO said Philo has been a valuable driver for the company, which has carriage for networks like HGTV, OWN and the Discovery Channel on the service.
With about 60 channels from Discovery, ViacomCBS, AMCNetworks and other programmers, Philo costs $20 a month. It has caught on among a particular group of cord-cutters and cord-nevers: those uninterested in sports, which accounts for a large share of pay-tv prices. Even streaming bundle players like Hulu and YouTube TV, whose initial premise was consumer value, have had to raise rates significantly as they have added networks, especially those featuring sports.
Philo’s growth in the first half of 2020 was the most of any U.

Amazon Fire TV is expanding its year-old effort to promote live programming, adding Hulu + Live TV, YouTube TV and Sling TV to its showcase for live fare.
The three major services, which together account for the majority of virtual MVPD subscriptions in the U.S., will join nearly 20 other integrated apps with live components. The existing roster includes Philo, Pluto TV and Amazon’s own Prime Video Channels.
Live programming from Hulu, YouTube and Sling will be directly integrated into Fire TV’s live TV discovery features, including the “live” tab, “on now” rows and multi-app channel guide. Alexa voice technology is usable when manipulating the guide.
The Sling integration began earlier this year. YouTube TV is on Fire TV as of Wednesday and Hulu + Live TV will be available in the coming weeks.

Exclusive: Philo, the sports-free streaming bundle that launched nationally a bit more than two years ago, is starting to run its first rolling-stock commercials as part of a new marketing campaign.
Mixing 15-, 30- and 60-second spots across digital and linear platforms, with a focus on major markets like New York, La and Atlanta, the campaign features the tagline, “Philo is TV. For Everyone.” (Watch an example above.) The ads promote the value proposition of Philo, a $16-a-month offering that includes live feeds of about five dozen networks from Discovery, ViacomCBS, AMC Networks and others.
After ramping up this week, the campaign will continue at least through the first half of 2020.
Philo began as a video offering targeted to college campuses. It launched as a national service in November 2017. Early investors in the company included HBO and Mark Cuban.

Philo has nabbed more dough: The low-cost live-streaming TV “skinny bundle” provider has raised $40 million in Series C funding, led by existing investors AMC Networks, Discovery and Viacom.
The funding brings Philo to more than $90 million raised to date. Additional investors include A+E Networks, CBC New Media, Nea, Rho Ventures and Xfund.
The company mainly plans to use the cash infusion for marketing, said Philo CEO Andrew McCollum. The over-the-top cable TV package is pitched to “cover-nevers” — people who have never subscribed to pay TV — or cord-cutters, who have cancelled cable or satellite service.
“One comment I get is, people say they love Philo but they’re surprised they don’t see it come out more in advertising,” he said. “That will change with this funding.” The company is looking at doing more digital video, podcast and radio advertising, but won’t likely run TV advertising just yet, according to McCollum.
