‘Mean Girls’ Star Avantika Talks Meeting Amanda Seyfried and Her Movie-Stealing Musical Number
Image
Within hours of Mean Girls’ (2024) box office-topping release, bootleg video of Avantika’s song-and-dance number, “Sexy,” circulated social media to the praise of people far and wide.

Avantika plays a new take on Amanda Seyfried’s Karen in Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr.’s film adaptation of Tina Fey’s Mean Girls Broadway musical, which was based on Fey and Mark Waters’ 2004 comedy classic. (The original Mean Girls was also based on Rosalind Wiseman’s book Queen Bees and Wannabes.) Like the Karen before her, Avantika’s version of the character is also endearingly slow on the uptake, often garnering the film’s best jokes and biggest laughs, but Fey, who returned as screenwriter, opted to not just play all the hits again, such as Karen’s “weather report.”

Avantika didn’t get the chance to meet Seyfried before or during production, but a couple of days after the...

Image
You might be familiar with Mean Girls on Broadway, most recently toplined by Sabrina Carpenter and Reneé Rapp, and you’ve almost definitely seen the 2004 movie, packed with more quotable moments than one can count. So, in the new movie musical Mean Girls, directors Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr. had big shoes to fill.

To prepare for the Tina Fey-scripted, Lorne Michaels-produced film, the married directing duo headed to a high school in Ottawa, Canada, and learned from the pros: Gen Z theater kids. They soaked up...

Blackpink Inspired New ‘Mean Girls’ Choreography: ‘They Influenced This New Generation’
Image
Kyle Hanagami, who has choreographed Blackpink performances for more than four years, drew inspiration from the group when working on the new musical adaptation of Mean Girls. In a red-carpet interview, he explained that he was thinking about what younger viewers might expect when he was working on the film.

When working on the infamous Christmas dance scene, in particular, he drew a connection between the fact that the film’s “Plastics” were a quartet of young women and that the artists he’d been working with in recent years were also a foursome.

‘Mean Girls’ Musical Film Is Not Fetch, But Reneé Rapp Kills as Regina
Image
A lot has changed in the 20 years since Regina George and the Plastics first stalked the halls of North Shore High. Every teenager now has a smartphone. Social media has given several generations new ways to slay, shame, and talk shit. The Internet is one massive Burn Book. And yet, if Mean Girls 2024 proves anything, it’s that some things truly are forever: There will always be cliques, there will always be drama, mathletes will always rap about their calculus skills, school buses are still a hazard, and high...

‘Mean Girls’ Review: Tina Fey’s Regurgitated Movie Musical Is a Tuneless Mess
Image
Mark Waters’ hit comedy about the savage jungle of high school cliques, Mean Girls, had enough instant-classic dialogue and memorable characters to become a touchstone for the generation either in or fresh out of their teens when it was released in 2004 and those who have discovered it in the years since. With screenwriter Tina Fey continuing to steer the vehicle, the property navigated the transition to Broadway musical in 2018 with plenty of its original charms intact and some even fortified thanks to the expressive magic of characters bursting into songs that reveal their inner lives.

The show was never going to keep Stephen Sondheim awake nights with its workmanlike tunes composed by Fey’s husband, Jeff Richmond. But Nell Benjamin’s frequently clever lyrics delivered laughs and director-choreographer Casey Nicholaw’s flair for kinetic showmanship made it a high-energy explosion of hormonal insecurity, malice, vulnerability and hard-won life lessons. A top-notch cast didn’t hurt,...

Watch This Supernaturally Smooth Dance Routine Set to Olivia Rodrigo's "Vampire"
Image
Olivia Rodrigo's macabre heartbreak anthem "Vampire" is like a wooden stake through the heart, but Kyle Hanagami and his dance crew are here to heal our emotional wounds with their supernaturally smooth dance moves. Inspired by the debut single from Rodrigo's sophomore album, "Guts," Hanagami's choreography is sorrowful, spooky, and packed with the kind of emotion that would leave even the moodiest vampires in awe.

The first group to execute the routine - Haley Fitzgerald, Haley Jonae, and Maycee Steele - delivered a fluid performance with moments of thoughtful nonchalance. A casual flip of the wrist or turn of the head punctuated the song's most temperamental moments before the crew went all out at the crescendo. A second group - Eloise Harpas and Dougal Herr - delivered an equally impassioned performance, playing off each other beautifully to illustrate the failed romance referenced in the song's lyrics.

Mark Rober To Teach Creative Engineering Class Alongside Online Learning Startup ‘Monthly’

onthly, a startup that launched last year and hosts 30-day classes from experts in various creative fields -- including painting, music, cooking, and more -- has just onboarded former NASA engineer and noted YouTube creator Mark Rober to lead a course on creative engineering.

Monthly already offers curriculum from the likes of choreographer Kyle Hanagami and musician Ryan Tedder. The platform differs from other online learning startups, it says, in that participants are asked to produce works of their own by the end of the experience, marking a more active, hands-on process than passive video playlist consumption. During the class, participants are grouped into factions of 20 -- which can comprise existing friends or randomly-selected strangers -- allowing students to ask questions and glean feedback along the way.

Rober’s class will help participants use engineering and science to bring their creative ideas to life. Throughout the class, Rober will also share how he researches,...

Katy Perry at an event for Katy Perry: Part of Me (2012)
Katy Perry is back with her upbeat new song “Never Really Over,” produced by electronic pop artist Zedd. Singing Oyster Is YouTube's Most Viral Video of 2017
Ed Sheeran
A man singing in an oyster costume is YouTube's most viral video of 2017. The non-us video hit No. 1 on the chart, destroying its competition. It's important to note that YouTube is talking about the most viral videos, aka, shared, not by views. The Luis Fonsi song, "Despacito" featuring Daddy Yankee has that honor with over 4 billion views, 24 million likes and 2 million dislikes. However, when it comes to the most viral YouTube videos, The Google-owned site says the top 10 trending videos were watched more than 633 million times, collectively for a combined total of 40 million hours.

The number one honor goes to a clip from a Thai singing competition, showing a man dressed in a full-body oyster suit crooning and rapping a song with a title that loosely translates to "Love you until the world turns into dust." The video only has over 182 million views, but YouTube tracked how viral the video was by tracking views,...

Julianne Hough Completely Lost Her Cool Over Her Bridesmaids' Surprise Dance Routine
Julianne Hough at an event for Los 90 Premios de la Academia (2018)
A post shared by Kyle Hanagami (@kylehanagami) on Aug 25, 2017 at 8:57am Pdt Julianne Hough is known for her incredible moves, so it only makes sense that dancing was a big part of her wedding day to Brooks Laich. After saying "I do" in a stunning ceremony in Idaho in July, the Dancing With the Stars judge got a huge surprise from her bridesmaids in the form of a choreographed dance routine to Sia's "The Greatest," one of Julianne's favorites from her tour with brother Derek. Not only do the ladies, including friend Nina Dobrev, completely nail it on the dance floor, but we can't get over Julianne's reaction. At one point, she even excitedly moves along to the beat. Seriously, it's almost as cute as when Brooks saw her in her wedding dress for the first time.
