March is a busy time for YouTube-based advertising, especially in the sports world. As March Madness and Opening Day brought an influx of viewers to basketball and baseball channels, a lesser known sport highlight its own playoff push. The leading video in the Gospel Stats Weekly Brand Report, however, is in a completely different category: It involves YouTube’s favorite engineer and his latest experience.

Changer Studios and Electrify Video Partners are providing a boost for educational videomakers. Those two companies have teamed up with YouTube to launch the EduTuber Accelerator, a six-week program that will connect emerging creators with industry leaders.
The accelerator is open to North America-based educational creators who count between 5,000 and 150,000 subscribers on YouTube. In an email to Tubefilter, Electrify Co-Founder Ian Shepherd said that the program will use a broad definition of EduTuber. “A creator could be teaching math or science, showing people how to change a tire, how to grow vegetables in their backyard, how to do a kickflip, how to draw, how to start a business, or sharing the intricacies of Ancient Rome’s political personalities,” Shepherd said. “If you are educating others through YouTube videos then this program is for you.”
The 20 creators who are chosen for the EduTuber Accelerator will receive guidance from an assortment of industry experts.

Electrify Video Partners is investing in one of YouTube’s top educational channels. The U.K.-based firm has agreed to fund Veritasium, the Stem-focused hub led by Derek Muller.
The deal is described as a “strategic investment” that will support Muller’s on-camera work as well as his off-YouTube ventures. The exact size of the investment has not been disclosed. In February, when Electrify announced a $50 million funding round, a company rep said that the size of Electrify deals with creators range from “several hundred thousand dollars to many millions.”
Electrify typically takes a stake in the creator channels it backs, and the Veritasium pact is no exception. An Electrify rep confirmed that the company will acquire an ownership stake in Muller’s learning hub.
Muller and his team will apply their latest injection of capital in a few distinct areas. On the Veritasium channel, the Electrify funding will...

Dr. Derek Muller, the science educator behind YouTube channel Veritasium, has signed with A3 Artists Agency for representation in all areas.
Muller is from Australia and currently based out of Los Angeles. He has a Ph.D. in physics education research from the University of Sydney and launched Veritasium in 2011 as a hub for educational science videos.
Veritasium—which has nearly 13 million subscribers—became well-known thanks in part to videos where Muller asked random members of the public questions about science and found out just how common some misconceptions are. Now, it offers a broad range of content, including experiments and interviews with experts.
Muller’s success on YouTube led him to gigs hosting documentaries like Vitamania and Uranium: Twisting the Dragon’s Tail, presenting Australian science show Catalyst, and secured him a spot as a correspondent on Netflix series Bill Nye Saves the World. He’s also hosted the Google Science Fair,...

Bill Nye has an admirable mission but an unenviable task: to combat scientific illiteracy in an era that doesn’t value expertise and reason. The title of his new Netflix TV series “Bill Nye Saves the World” isn’t hyperbole at all. It’s his hope to get viewers psyched up enough about science that they’re not just curious; they want to create a change for the better.

Six episodes were provided for review.
“I’m Bill Nye, and I’m here to save the world.” With those audacious words, Nye opens each episode of his new Netflix series, delving into a broad range of hotly debated topics that currently sit at a critical crossroads in the global conversation. The focus isn’t on the the straightforward science that children grew up with during Bill Nye the Science Guy back in the 1990s, but it’s clearly intended for the now-adult audience who revered Nye’s rare ability to make science palatable and even fun for all ages.
Structured as a kind of talk/variety show, each episode of Bill Nye Saves the World centers on a particular issue (topics include alternative medicine, climate change and GMOs) and sees Nye break down the science behind it all as well as the far-reaching impact that may result. Along the way,...

The smashing success of Lin-Manuel Miranda's musical Hamilton has shown that education need not take place within the confines of a classroom. Another group that understands that idea is the community of educational YouTube creators, who have used their channels to teach math, science, history, and other school subjects in a variety of entertaining ways.
One of the most talented practitioners of YouTube edutainment is Tim Blais, who puts both his master’s degree in physics and his keen musical ear to work on his A Capella Science channel, where he offers up songs like "Bohemian Gravity." In his latest video, Blais joined forces with several of his colleagues in the online video community for a tribute to Irish physicist William Rowan Hamilton set to the tune of Hamilton’s opening track.

Project Name: Snatoms
Asking For: $42,000 on Kickstarter
Amount Raised Thus Far (At Time Of Post): $59,061, though stretch goals will soon seek higher targets.
Days Remaining In Campaign (At Time Of Post): 41
Description: Usually, our Fund This column profiles hopeful content creators looking to get a new series or short film off the ground. This time, though, we're highlighting a science project. Derek Muller, the host of the Veritasium, is seeking funds for Snatoms, a brand of molecular modeling kits that he believes can replace the ball-and-stick models that have been used for 150 years.
Snatoms feature a simple, intuitive design. Balls of varying sizes--each one representing a different element--are filled with magnets and then cut to create multiple flat surfaces. By magnetically attaching, say, two hydrogen balls onto the surfaces of one oxygen ball, a Snatoms user can create a water molecule that comes together with a series of satisfying snaps.

Wired is looking into the future of consumer robotics, and along the way, it’s getting a little help from its friends. The tech publication run by Conde Nast has launched Cyborg Nation, a new web series sponsored by Reddit, hosted by Derek Muller of Veritasium, and produced by ad agency Acres.
Each episode of Cyborg Nation looks into a specific innovation in the world of cyborg technology. The premiere, for example, shows how bionic limbs are beginning to eclipse the capabilities of normal human appendages. You can find it on The Scene, where it lives next to other videos in the Conde Nast Entertainment network, or on the Wired YouTube channel.
Other installments within the six-episode series discuss topics like cyborg cockroaches and mind-controlled hardware. Amazingly, these developments all exist in real life. Somehow, they’re not concepts out of a science-fiction book. “It is an honor to tell...

For the first time, iconic cookie brand Nestle Toll House is sponsoring a series on YouTube, and in doing so, it has turn to a chef with a bright disposition and a charming demeanor. Ashley Adams, co-founder of the Feast Of Fiction YouTube channel, is the host of Bake My Day, a cooking web series that makes use of Nestle Toll House products.
On Feast Of Fiction, Adams and co-host Jimmy Wong craft recipes based on famous foodstuffs from fictional worlds. Bake My Day, on the other hand, is a bit more straightforward. Its recipes, such as chocolate quesadillas and “Scotcheroos,” are somewhat offbeat, but Adams’ presentation style, like many of the chefs on the Food Network, is full of smiles and energy. She even adds in a bit of Alton Brown-esque goofiness for good measure.
Upcoming Bake My Day episodes will throw some wrinkles into the show’s formula.

The Coriolis effect, which causes ocean currents to move in different directions across Earth’s two hemispheres, is a well-known scientific theory. What’s more regularly debated, however, is whether this effect causes toilet water to move in opposite directions in the USA and Australia. That particular factoid has been referenced several times in pop culture, but it has also been refuted, with Hank Green calling it “bunk” in a SciShow video.
Now, in an innovative new video, two members of YouTube’s scientific community have decided to test the Coriolis effect on a small scale. Destin Sandlin of Smarter Every Day and Derek Muller of Veritasium launched a collaboration in which they both perform the same experiment on opposite sides of the world before sharing their results in a fascinating pair of synchronized videos.
