Giancarlo Esposito is taking over the male lead in Netflix’s Shondaland drama The Residence following the passing of Andre Braugher.
Braugher, who died Dec. 11 following a battle with lung cancer, was tapped last February to be the male lead on Netflix’s Shonda Rhimes drama The Residence, starring opposite Uzo Aduba. The White House murder-mystery started production before shutting down amid Hollywood’s dual strikes. Braugher had already completed filming a lot of his scenes on the series, which was scheduled to resume filming last month January. Esposito’s casting means the scenes Braugher had filmed will be reshot on the drama from showrunner Paul William Davies (Scandal), which has continued production amid the recasting.
Here’s the official logline for The Residence, per Netflix: “132 rooms. 157 suspects. One dead body. One wildly eccentric detective. One disastrous State Dinner. The Residence is a screwball whodunnit set in the upstairs, downstairs...

Andre Braugher’s cause of death has been revealed to be lung cancer, his rep has confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.
Braugher died Monday at 61 after what his rep then said was a “brief illness.”
He starred as master interrogator Det. Frank Pembleton on NBC’s Homicide: Life on the Street for the first six seasons of the show’s acclaimed run, then played another cop, Capt. Raymond Holt — this time against type and for laughs — on the 2013-21 Fox-nbc sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
He won his first Emmy in 1998 for outstanding lead actor in a drama series for Homicide after a season that featured one of its most memorable episodes, “Subway.” That was a two-hander in which Pembleton tries to unearth whether a man (Vincent D’Onofrio) pinned between a Baltimore subway train and the platform was pushed onto the track — while also trying to comfort him in his dying moments.

The entertainment world was recently dealt a heartbreaking blow with beloved actor Andre Braugher passing away unexpectedly at the age of 61. Braugher was best known for his roles on shows like "Homicide: Life on the Street" and "Brooklyn Nine-Nine." Before the actor's passing, he had been working on a new TV show for Netflix called "The Residence." It will now serve as the actor's final project. Much remains in flux, but we know quite a bit about the show already.
The eight-episode series hails from Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers, with Paul William Davies on board as the writer and showrunner. It is based on Kate Andersen Brower's book "The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House," but interestingly, it's said that the show will only use the book as a jumping-off point, so it won't be an outright adaptation. According to a February report from Deadline,...

The late Andre Braugher’s now-final project — Shondaland’s comedic murder-mystery The Residence — remains unfinished thanks to a shut down sparked by the WGA strike months prior. Although the series had been gearing up to resume production, Braugher’s death Tuesday raises significant questions for the Netflix series’ future.
Four episodes of its eight-episode order were shot during the early days of the writers strike more than six months ago, Deadline reports. While the series is slated to resume shooting Jan. 2, it’s unclear if that date will stick, as producers must now figure out how to proceed without the actor.

Shut down by the WGA strike months ago, Shondaland’s murder-mystery drama The Residence had been gearing up to resume production. On Tuesday, the Netflix series lost one of its stars, Emmy winner André Braugher, who died at the age of 61 after a brief illness.
The Residence, from executive producer/showrunner Paul William Davies and executive producers Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers, shot four episodes of its eight-episode order before suspending filming during the early days of the writers strike more than six months ago.
The series had been slated to return to production Jan. 2, sources tell Deadline. In light of Braugher’s untimely death, it is unclear whether The Residence will keep that date or give the cast and crew more time to mourn while Netflix the producers mull how to continue without the actor. The ex- movie star Mai Zetterling found more satisfaction in directing. In interviews she denied that she is an intellectual, but more intelligent films about male-female emotional politics are hard to come by. Unusually frank and intense, these dramas for the 1960s art film circuit pack a visceral impact — the extreme situations and content disturbed critics concerned with Good Taste. It’s a trilogy of respected works: Loving Couples, Night Games and The Girls.

The garish German TV spin-off combines live action and animation, but its babyish tone sets the bar too low for its preteen audience
Based on a German children’s TV series, this feature-length spin-off dutifully trots out the fantasy tropes – quest narrative, chosen-one hero, multicoloured unicorns aplenty – but doesn’t really pluck anything compelling out of this otherworldly brew. Its Narnian land of Centopia, accessed by protagonist Mia (Margot Nuccetelli) through a magical book and bracelet gifted to her by her deceased mum, is depicted in garish and ornate animation by director Adam Gunn. But its vacant-eyed elf inhabitants sum up the general lack of personality.
Chilling out with her grandad (David Willetts) at his lakeside pad, Mia is summoned to Centopia just as megalomaniac toad Toxor (voiced by Paul Davies) is menacing the realm once again. Spewing forth malignant smoke that transforms the local elves into subservient “groundlings”, he...

The creative producer will use her background bringing shows like Bridgerton to the screen — Shondaland is currently producing the prequel — to help attendees navigate the ever-changing (and Covid-complicated) entertainment landscape. Beers spoke to THR about this year’s lineup and how it will help revitalize the industry.
How would you describe the mission of the Produced By conference, especially as the industry continues to experience rapid change and constriction?

Last May a federal jury indicted three gamers on several charges, including making hoax reports and obstruction of justice, after they were accused of reporting a fake crime as a prank — a prank that resulted in a 28-year-old’s death. In the months that followed the controversial act of “swatting” has not only ignited national debate, but the topic sparked conversation in the writers’ room at Shondaland’s “For the People,” inspiring the adrenaline-fueled storyline that propels the characters forward on the drama’s secondseason premiere.

In the new Shonda Rhimes-produced legal drama “For the People,” executive producer and director Tom Verica uses art direction and cinematography to “take the viewer on a journey of what these first-year attorneys are up against.” Created by Paul William Davies, this freshman ABC series starring Hope Davis, Ben Shenkman, Anna Deavere Smith and Vondie Curtis-Hall centers on a group of young lawyers who arrive in New York’s Southern District Federal Court, more ominously known as “The Mother Court.” Verica, who serves as the producing director, wanted to “create these anthem-like frames and spaces” to “bring forth what one’s experience might be when they’re suddenly thrust into the federal justice system.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Verica above.

Welcome to The Mother Court.
Shondaland’s For the People premiered Tuesday on ABC, this time bringing the company’s signature style to the courtroom.
Created by Scandal‘s Paul William Davies, the drama follows six brand new lawyers (three public defenders and three prosecutors) as they begin working in the Southern District of New York Federal Court, aka “The Mother Court.” It is the “oldest, most prestigious, highest profile court in America,” a judge tells them before they swear in. No pressure, right?
The newbies are paired up and tasked with taking on their first cases. Ready to meet ’em?...

With a writers strike averted, the broadcast TV business’ attention — which had been divided for the past month between pilot production and WGA negotiations — is focusing squarely on the ongoing pilot season, now in its final stage heading into the May 15-18 upfronts. Pilots are being screened this week, followed by pickup and scheduling decisions that will be made over the next 10 days. Here is the latest edition of Deadline’s Pilot Buzz on where I hear the various pilots stand:
ABC’s needs may have changed significantly since it ordered 23 pilots — the most of any broadcast network — in January and early February. In the past few weeks, the network went aggressively after American Idol and is in final negotiations for a reboot, which would take up a lot of real estate on the midseason schedule, and it also is negotiating for the upcoming revival of the classic ABC sitcom Roseanne.
