"Hellraiser" is like many horror franchises in that it starts out with a classic and gets off a couple of worthy sequels before turning into absolute dreck. It is, however, unlike your typical slasher series in that there's no reason it should go sailing off the rails.
The premise is evergreen: in a moment of curiosity, a person futzes around with the Lament Configuration, unleashes the sadomasochistic Cenobites, and scrambles to bargain their way out of, or simply forestall, eternal torture. Clive Barker's first film juxtaposed the wanton sexual adventurousness of Frank (Sean Chapman) and Julia Cotton (Clare Higgins) against the teenage innocence of their niece/stepdaughter Kirsty (Ashley Laurence). Director Tony Randel continued this narrative with the wondrously depraved "Hellbound: Hellraiser II," while Anthony Hickox broke off from the Cottons for the interesting "Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth." The next six sequels were excruciatingly awful.

This is the story of a boy and his movie. Well, truly this is the story of a young man who looked seriously too young to be directing his next feature film. Author Clark Collis chronicles the journey of one of Britain’s most successful horror films, a film that has had many imitators but few equals, a film that coined a new genre, the rom-zom-com. It was the beginning of what would be called The Three Flavors Cornetto trilogy. It is a loving tribute to the zombie films of George A. Romero, delivered with a British twist. It is the timeless classic, Shaun of the Dead. You've Got Red on You: How Shaun of the Dead Was Brought to Life is exactly what...

The end of summer and start of fall has seen the release of several books that qualify as major entries in film studies—specifically Fun City Cinema and Inland Empire—along with some wild, wooly appreciations for the likes of Shaun of the Dead and Kevin Smith. Read on for details about these and much more.
Fun City Cinema: New York City and the Movies That Made It by Jason Bailey (Abrams Books)
Billed as a visual history of a century of filmmaking in New York City, Fun City Cinema is the book NYC deserves, Jason Bailey without question the right author for the job. As he showed in books on Richard Pryor and 1970s detective pictures, Bailey is adept at analyzing why certain films and individuals make such a deep impact on the cultural and artistic landscape. Fun City Cinema might be his most ambitious yet—large-scale, photo-heavy, and...

Since the first one came out in 2003, we've seen six movies released in the Wrong Turn franchise (with Joe Lynch's Wrong Turn 2: Dead End still one of my favorite horror sequels ever), and early next year the cannibal franchise will be rebooted with a new Wrong Turn, which is teased in its official trailer ahead of its January release.
Directed by Mike P. Nelson from a screenplay by Alan B. McElroy (writer of 2003's Wrong Turn), the new Wrong Turn stars Charlotte Vega, Adain Bradley, Bill Sage, Emma Dumont, Dylan McTee, Daisy Head, Tim DeZarn, and Matthew Modine.
The trailer (see below) was exclusively debuted by Entertainment Weekly's Clark Collis, who reports that the film will be released for one night only in theaters on January 26th via Saban Films and Fathom Events.

Christopher Nolan’s promotional tour for Tom Shore’s new book “The Nolan Variations” continued this week with a lively virtual discussion presented by 92Y. The “Tenet” and “Inception” Oscar nominee sat down with Shore and Entertainment Weekly senior writer Clark Collis to chat about what it’s like having his career defined and examined on the pages of Shore’s book.
Among the chat’s most enlightening moments was when Nolan expressed relief in mounting his “Dark Knight” trilogy when he did. “Batman Begins” went into production in March 2004 and was released the follower year, three years before the McU-launching “Iron Man” and Nolan’s own “The Dark Knight” turned the comic book genre into the studio system’s crown jewel.

Film journalists, critics, directors, and more are showing support for writer-actress-filmmaker Amy Seimetz on social media after news surfaced she has an open restraining order against “Primer” and “Upstream Color” director Shane Carruth. Seimetz starred opposite Carruth in “Upstream Color” and the two had a relationship that ended in 2018. Seimetz filed for the restraining order against Carruth on June 12, citing years of emotional and physical abuse. One alleged incident that occurred at a hotel in 2016 found Carruth strangling Seimetz until it was hard for her to breathe.
Seimetz’s restraining order gained visibility on social media after Carruth tweeted an image of the “Upstream Color” soundtrack on vinyl with part of the restraining order document sticking out from underneath it. The photo’s timing has led many people in the film community to wonder if Carruth is trying to take attention away from the release of Seimetz’s acclaimed new film “She Dies Tomorrow,...

Oh, the irony! I’ve been covering Hollywood industry awards as a journalist for 30 years and now I’m nominated for the Press Award bestowed by Hollywood’s leading PR guild: Icg Publicists. It’s so gracious of them – thank you, huzzahs to all – but now I’ll get a toxic dose of what I report on all the time: nominee jitters.
Uh-oh: do my Hollywood industry peers really, really like me? Should I campaign aggressively? Rent out billboards on Sunset Boulevard? What should I wear on Feb. 7 when the winner is revealed at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in the same room where the Golden Globes are doled out?
Lucky for me, I know the drill. I’ve been nominated, and lost, twice in the past. Only 16 more defeats and I’ll be the Susan Lucci of the Publicists’ Award! So, please, save me: spread the word across town — Vote for Tom!

Stephen King has historically minced no words about what horror films he doesn’t like, and which ones he does. (Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 adaptation of his novel “The Shining” isn’t one of them.)
But the master of literary horror, in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, especially liked director Lars Klevberg’s 2019 remake “Child’s Play,” which released back in June and served as a reimagining of the 1988 cult-horror classic of the same name about the psychotic, murderous doll Chucky.
“I didn’t go see it in the theaters, because I thought, ‘Well, this is just another warmed-over sequel,’” King told EW’s Clark Collis. “Mark Hamill does the voice of Chucky and I just f—ing loved that movie. I laughed and I cried at the things in there. Everybody who’s in the movie does a terrific job. It’s a smart script and it’s just a load of fun.

Clark Collis of Entertainment Weekly doesn’t sound too enthused about the upcoming 47 Meters Down: Uncaged, but there might be good reason. For one, the first 47 Meters Down wasn’t absolutely horrible but it wasn’t so epic that people would gladly place it over other shark movies that have come along in the past. Ever since Jaws, shark movies have been trying hard to hit the same level of excitement and terror and very few have ever done so. The whole evolution of shark movies in fact has been kind of anticlimactic for the most part since the whole shark

Amazon is doubling down on technology, fan appeal, and its vast monetary resources to woo Emmy voters in 2019. For the third consecutive year, the streaming giant will host a nearly month-long string of events in the heart of Hollywood in order to showcase its Emmy-eligible original series.
