Indonesia’s Jogja-Netpac Asian Film Festival (Jaff) will unveil its inaugural Jaff Market in December. The initiative was announced at the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday.
This new three-day event aims to reshape the Indonesian film industry by fostering networking, innovation and collaboration among various sectors.
Since its start in 2006, Jaff has played a crucial role in nurturing Indonesian cinema, helping many filmmakers rise. “Jaff has consistently strengthened the film ecosystem,” said festival director Ifa Isfansyah.
The Jaff Market will cover 10,000 square meters, featuring over 150 booths with production companies, content creators and service providers. Leading the initiative is experienced producer Linda Gozali, former secretary-general of the Indonesian Film Festival. “We look forward to creating new connections and opportunities,” said Gozali.
The event highlights the rapid post-pandemic recovery of Indonesia’s film industry, which saw local films capture 61% of the market in 2022. The industry fully rebounded in 2023. Despite being the largest market in Southeast Asia,...

Ankia Noni Rose, the woman behind Princess Tiana’s voice, has written a book about the character’s adventures. Now, the cover art for Tiana’s Perfect Plan has been revealed, and it appears to tie into the upcoming Splash Mountain retheme!
If you look at the product’s official page on Disney Books, you’ll be greeted with temporary art that reads “cover to be revealed soon.” The official reveal didn’t come from Disney, but from a listing on Amazon!
Tiana appears to be wearing an outfit similar to what we saw on the recently revealed audio animatronic. It all ties together.
If we check the story’s synopsis, it makes the upcoming ride make a little more sense … even if having a mountain in the bayou is silly:
“After travelling all winter, Tiana and Naveen are back in New Orleans in time for Mardi Gras.

There has been a resurgence of crime-investigation thrillers in Malayalam cinema. The past films, such as Cbi: Our Diary Kurippu (1988) and Anjaam Paathiraa (2020), have paved the way for some interesting stories about serial killers, following the investigation path chosen by the leads in the film. Rorschach, which was released in 2022, also provided insight on how certain revenge stories can be executed. Directed by Midhun Manuel Thomas, the 2024 film tells the story of a tormented insomniac police officer who works to keep his thoughts at bay and finds himself embroiled in an interesting murder case.

Walking out of the theater after Ddlj, Jay (Jonathan Groff) launches into a defense of the over-the-top emotionality of Bollywood romances. “I think we’re all embarrassed by the bigness of love,” he declares. His date, Naveen (Karan Soni), is intrigued but skeptical, later recounting the interaction to his work bestie (Peter S. Kim) as a bit weird and kind of corny.

I did not have Jonathan Groff singing “Tujhe Dekha To Yeh Jana Sanam” on my 2024 bingo card. The Broadway actor humbly steps into Indian culture in Roshan Sethi’s “A Nice Indian Boy,” which repeatedly connects back to Aditya Chopra’s “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge” — the film that originated “Tujhe Dekha”.
Written by Eric Randall (and based on Madhuri Shekar’s play), “A Nice Indian Boy” is all about subverting stereotypes about Indian culture, both within and outside of the community. The title itself is a cheeky twist on every aunty’s favorite refrain: that when a girl is of the right age, she or her family will find her a “nice Indian boy” to settle down with.
This time, however, protagonist Naveen (Karan Soni) is the one planning to bring home a nice Indian boy, which is probably not what all those aunties were picturing. But “A Nice Indian Boy” delights in defying expectations,...

Tvf is back again with the second season of its hit show Aspirants, which dives further into the memorable characters. Some, like Sandeep Bhaiya and Sk, have had their own spin-off shows, but it is in the second season that all of them reunite, and the drama takes off. We have come to associate Tvf with heartwarming and uplifting dramedies, but Aspirants Season 2 stays clear of the comedy. Very unlike Tvf, this season does not have humor as a sweet coating, which gives a feel-good vibe to Tvf shows. Sure, there may be very dark and heavy episodes sometimes, but the humor is always there. Aspirants works by inducing conflicts between almost all the characters and then stretching the scenes, sometimes into over-sentimental territories. That’s a nice technique to constantly keep the viewer engaged in the ever-evolving drama, but the knots they find themselves in are not that easy to truthfully resolve.

Three of Indonesia’s leading studios – MD Pictures, Falcon and Screenplay Films – explained their plans for taking local content international and how they’re juggling between producing for streamers and theatres, in a session at Apos.
Manoj Punjabi, founder of MD Pictures, said his studio switched to producing 90% for the streamers during the pandemic, working with global players as well as Tencent-owned Chinese streamer WeTV. Tencent acquired a 14.6% stake in MD Pictures during the pandemic, which Punjabi said helped the company reach “a different level with more potential for growth”.
However, Punjabi added that Indonesia is still a market where both studios and audiences support local movies in cinemas. Indonesian films had a record-breaking year in 2022 when cinemas reopened, taking a 60% market share, with hits including MD Pictures’ horror drama Kkn Di Desa Penari, which became Indonesia’s highest-grossing film of all time.

South Asian representation in cinema has come a long way, with increased visibility and recognition in the last few years. However, despite the progress made, it is important to acknowledge that there is still work to be done to ensure more authentic and inclusive portraits of the diverse South Asian community in cinema and provide opportunities for South Asian filmmakers and actors to tell their stories on their own terms. In this regard, director Isher Sahota – of extensive television experience – has teamed up with writer James Hey and producer Jon Tarcy of independent production company Bonaparte Films, to bring to the public “The Effects of Lying”, a British comedy/drama with an all-Asian cast. “The Effects of Lying” is the first feature film for Sahota and Tarcy and has been acquired by the streaming service Itvx.
