Image
Tom Cruise said goodbye to the “Mission: Impossible” franchise in electrifying fashion at the Cannes Film Festival, where “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” earned a five-minute ovation thanks in part to Cruise’s commitment to putting breathless and death-defying practical stunts on the big screen. The Cannes premiere was a massive event, with a 40-piece orchestra welcoming guests into the theater with the franchise’s iconic theme before the screening.

The audience lapped up the film’s special effects but the long run-time left some theatergoers bleary-eyed and exhausted. In the final stretch of the film, featuring death-defying acrobatics from Cruise, a handful of attendees got up and fled the Palais.

Though Cruise’s willingness to risk his life for “Mission: Impossible” has been covered relentlessly, what the Cannes audience did not expect was how much he was willing to bare all.

The 62-year-old survived a three-minute knife fight...

“Mommy! Mommy! Mommy!” she cried, tearing up as she spotted her. Waving with one hand and clutching her golden statue with the other, she continued, “My mom is here. My whole family is here.”

Saldaña, visibly moved, thanked the Academy and acknowledged her fellow nominees—Ariana Grande, Monica Barbaro, Isabella Rossellini and Felicity Jones—praising them for their “love and community” throughout the awards season. While she expressed gratitude to Emilia Pérez director Jacques Audiard and the film’s cast and crew, she refrained from naming anyone else individually.

Beyond the Borders review – Zoe Saldaña shines in timely tragedy-flecked thriller
Zoe Saldaña in The Absence of Eden (2023)
The Oscar nominated star gets to show her full range in this competently made and beautifully shot story of a desperately grim attempt to cross the Mexican border

This competent but somewhat predictable drama, which strobes between settings in Mexico and Texas, emerged two years ago under the title The Absence of Eden to very little fanfare or even much notice beyond the festival circuit. It’s almost certainly getting a release now here in the UK because its lead, Zoe Saldaña, is up for an Academy Award for Emilia Pérez in which, like this one, she plays a Mexican woman.

Here Saldaña is a strip club employee named Esmee on the run to El Norte after she kills a client, so this at least shows off her range a bit. As it happens, this was also directed and co-written by Saldaña’s real-life husband, Italian film-maker Marco Perego, who...

Doc Short Contenders Give Voters Plenty to Ponder

The 15 films that made the shortlist in the Oscars’ documentary short category are all powerful and thought-provoking, making the competition for an Academy Award nod incredibly stiff this year.

Leading the charge are “Incident,” “The Only Girl in the Orchestra,” “The Quilters,” “Death by Numbers” and “Keepers.”

The first 89 seconds of Bill Morrison’s police brutality doc “Incident” is silent. Security footage captures a street in Chicago on a July afternoon in 2018. Minutes later, a man is dead. Through a series of recordings of CCTV and police bodycam footage captured from different vantage points, Morrison offers a raw look at the Chicago police shooting of a Black man. The 29-minute New Yorker film won the best short documentary award at the 2023 IDA Documentary Awards and garnered a spot on the influential Doc NYC shortlist earlier this year.

Netflix’s “The Only Girl...

In ‘Emilia Pérez,’ Zoe Saldaña Finally Gets a Chance to ‘Explode’
Image
2024 worked out so well for Zoe Saldaña that she has gotten a bit superstitious about predicting what’s next. “I don’t want to say exactly what I would want to do or try to find something specific, because then I don’t want to create unrealistic expectations,” the actress told IndieWire over Zoom.

Saldaña happens to be in an extra celebratory mood after her film “Emilia Pérez” and live-action short “Dovecote” (directed by her husband Marco Perego) both made it onto the shortlists for the Oscars 2025. “In one year… we couldn’t have done this if we planned it,” she said.

Her turn as Rita, the passive lawyer sucked into the world of a Mexican drug lord seeking gender-affirming surgery, in the Jacques Audiard-directed “Emilia Pérez,” has specifically been the culmination of things she’s manifested for her career in recent years. “I just felt like, at different times,...

Zoe Saldaña and Marco Perego on the ‘unbelievable sensation’ of their ‘Dovecote’ making the Oscars shortlist
Image
The offscreen couple break down the “intense” challenges of shooting a dialogue-free film inside a real prison.

When director-writer-producer Marco Perego found out that his new live-action short film, “Dovecote,” had made it onto the Oscars shortlist, he had a hard time contacting the project’s actress-producer Zoe Saldaña to tell her the good news — because she was celebrating her Golden Globe nomination for yet another movie.

“She was not picking up [her phone] because she was busy with Emilia Pérez at the lunch for the Golden Globes,” he tells Gold Derby. (Watch our exclusive video interview above.) “And I kept calling and saying, ‘Please answer this call!’ But yeah, I’m very grateful, and it’s very good for the team and everybody.” “Dovecote” marks the latest collaboration between Saldaña and Perego, who were married in 2013.

“It’s an unbelievable sensation,” Saldaña says about making the Oscar shortlist. “It started out...

Zoe Saldaña Would Love to Perform With Selena Gomez at the Oscars If Their ‘Emilia Pérez’ Songs Are Nominated: ‘Make It a Beautiful Homage to Mexico’
Image
With “El Mal” and “Mi Camino” making the Oscar shortlist for original song, the “Emilia Pérez” tunes are one step closer to being nominated.

If they do get Oscar noms, “Emilia Pérez” star Zoe Saldaña is already thinking about how they could be performed during the ceremony.

“I would only do it — and I’m not pitching something, I’m just inspiring ideas – if we start it with ‘El Mal,’ we go into ‘Mi Camino’ and we end with [Saldaña begins to sing from ‘Las Damas que Pasa’], ‘Dedico este poema,’ and we have a Mexican comparsa come out and make it a beautiful homage to Mexico,” she told me at the Golden Globes first-time nominee luncheon at the Montage hotel in Beverly Hills.

That said, she’s already nervous about the potential performance. “This is when my dancer, my ballerina brain, comes along because that means that my team needs to make sure that I have enough weeks to rehearse that beforehand,...

At age 32, the former Disney star is earning awards season buzz for her work in writer-director Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Perez,” the Spanish language movie musical that won the Jury Prize at Cannes in May as well as a collective best actress award for Gomez and her co-stars Zoe Saldana and Karla Sofía Gascón.

Without giving too much away because this movie is better seen not knowing the plot, the film follows an attorney in Mexico City who goes to work for a drug kingpin and his family.

I caught up with Gomez at the film’s Los Angeles premiere on Monday night at the Egyptian Theater.

When you were starring in Barney, could you have ever imagined that you’d be on a red carpet today being asked about receiving Oscar buzz for Spanish-language musical?

I would have never believed you. But believe it or not,...
