"Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" sees Danai Gurira once again becoming the "bald-headed demon" and Dora Milaje leader, Okoye. You've seen Gurira slicing and dicing zombies; now, she's fighting blue merfolk. They're not *really* mermaids and mermen, though we can certainly hope to someday see an Okoye vs. the Little Mermaid crossover.
No, the merfolk-type people Okoye is battling in "Wakanda Forever" are the fearsome water warriors, the Talokanil, led by Namor (Tenoch Huerta). If Namor himself can be regarded as the General Zod of this equation, then his lieutenants, Namora (Mabel Cadena) and Attuma (Alex Livinalli), might correspond to Ursa and Non, the secondary villains in "Superman II."
In /Film's forthcoming interview with Gurira, she discussed her preparations for Okoye's bridge fight with Attuma in "Wakanda Forever." And she told us they involved some injuries, followed by physical therapy:

One week into it’s worldwide release, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has spawned a multiverse of conversations surrounding grief, fate, honor and duty — all themes that add new texture to viewers’ understanding of both the singular hero’s journey and the multiplied power of community. Having grossed more than 400 million worldwide to date, the film is at once deeply present, and Afrofuturist while dwelling in the past; the immediate invocation of the ancestors and portrayal of inherited traditions guide the sequel’s cast of characters in the absence of the late Chadwick Boseman (T’Challa) in order to carry the next generation forward.
When reflecting on her preparation for the role of Nakia, Lupita Nyong’o tells The Hollywood Reporter she had to face the task she was given, “which was of a woman who was at a different stage of accepting the loss than I was.

Few films in the 21st century have made as large of a cultural impact as “Black Panther.” A sequel was inevitable, but Chadwick Boseman’s tragic death put the creative team in a seemingly impossible position. How do you continue a franchise without its titular star?
As part of IndieWire’s Consider This FYC Brunch November 18, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” producer Nate Moore and costume designer Ruth E. Carter joined IndieWire’s Marcus Jones for a conversation about bringing the fictional African nation of Wakanda to life once again.
“Making this movie was a way for us to process our own grief,” Moore said. “And we knew it would be a way for the audience to mourn this character and this actor they loved so much as well.”
Boseman, and his character King T’Challa, is felt throughout “Wakanda Forever.” But the filmmakers decided an outright funeral scene was needed.

"Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" is caught between two worlds. That's nothing new for a movie set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where audiences are frequently whisked off into space or transported to separate dimensions a la the multiverse — but this movie does things a little differently. No wizard portals or futuristic ships are required because we never actually leave the planet Earth. Instead, the people of Wakanda come to realize that they aren't the only super-advanced vibranium-hoarding country on the planet.
In revealing itself to the world, Wakanda has made an enemy of a society that preferred to exist in the shadows. Or better yet, in the depths of the ocean, where no one was the wiser.
Yes, in between making audiences cheer and making them cry, "Wakanda Forever" also finds time to amaze audiences with the underwater kingdom of Talokan. Under the rule of their king Namor (Tenoch Huerta Mejia...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is an unprecedented success story in filmmaking, a unique experiment in crafting an interconnected universe with dozens of characters and some great stories. But for all its features, the MCU doesn't have a great track record when it comes to its villains. Sure, some are great — like Thanos, the mighty conqueror with some good points that had the internet debating whether he did anything wrong. There's also Zemo, the charismatic mercenary with some rather good taste in music and some good points that had the internet debating whether he did anything wrong. Oh, and who can forget about Killmonger, the charismatic mercenary with some good points that had the internet debating whether he did anything wrong. Other than them — and the "Spider-Man" villains — anytime we had a half-decent villain in the MCU, they died as soon as they were introduced.
That changes with "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

“It was incredibly difficult.” That is how Letitia Wright (“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”) describes the moment she learned about Chadwick Boseman‘s death in August 2020 from colon cancer. Wright recently spoke out at a Q&a following a SAG Awards screening of the new Marvel Studios blockbuster alongside co-stars Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Mabel Cadena and Alex Livinalli and filmmaker Ryan Coogler, moderated by Rotten Tomatoes’ Jacqueline Coley.
“I remember just that moment of going to my phone and seeing every possible American number calling me,” Wright recalls about that tragic and confusing day. “I went to my email and someone was saying, ‘My condolences.’ And I’m like, my condolences for what? I just spoke to you last night about a script, why are you emailing me that? Over the past few years, Marvel Studios has strived to tell more diverse stories, pulling not only from the rich lore of their comics but also from the history of other cultures. Marvel Cinematic Universe stories such as "Eternals," "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings," and "Ms. Marvel" are deeply rooted in the cultures and traditions of people from around the world. The celebration of different cultures is front-and-center in the newest film in the MCU: "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever."
The first "Black Panther" film received acclaim for its story and world-building, and was the first Marvel Studios film with a Black director and predominantly Black cast. With "Wakanda Forever," Coogler uses his skills to tell the story of another underrepresented minority in the MCU. At the forefront of the film and its marketing has been the opposing force against Wakanda, Namor, and his underwater nation of Talokan.

The character of Black Panther, as played by the late Chadwick Boseman, was first introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the 2016 film "Captain America: Civil War." That film was about a conflict between two factions of superheroes over whether or not superpowered freelance vigilantes should be allowed to continue their regular operations without oversight. Black Panther, aka T'Challa -- then the prince of the fictional country Wakanda -- teamed up with Iron Man in the conflict, arguing that oversight was indeed required.
Those themes of a superhero community operating within a larger, global system extended into Ryan Coogler's 2018 film "Black Panther." In that film T'Challa became king of Wakanda, a country that rests on top of a store of magical metal called vibranium. The plot of Ryan Coogler's new film "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," the 30th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, involves the invention of a massive machine that can detect the presence of the rare, magical metal known as vibranium. The element is so rare that the globe's entire supply is thought to rest under the nation of Wakanda, which has used its fantastical properties to turn itself into a sci-fi utopia. The United States government, however, is eager to get its hands on some vibranium, and their new machine threatens Wakandan livelihood.

In order to get more information about Riri's invention, Shuri (Letitia Wright) and Okoye (Danai Gurira) will entice her back to Wakanda...

"Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," the long-awaited sequel to 2018's record-breaking blockbuster, delivers as many twists and turns as viewers can expect from a Marvel flick. The film takes place one year after King T'Challa (played by Chadwick Boseman) dies from a fatal illness, leaving Wakanda vulnerable to poachers determined to get their hands on its most-prized possession: vibranium.
Not only does Wakanda face a threat from the US government, but it also finds a new enemy in the Talokanil people (from the underwater kingdom of Talokan) and their leader, Namor aka Ku'ku'lkán (Tenoch Huerta) - the Feathered Serpent God. Early in the movie, Namor sneaks into Wakanda to offer Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett) a proposition to protect their nations. He asks her to locate a scientist - later known to be Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) - who's created a vibranium detector device. Considering Talokan and Wakanda heavily rely on the rare metal,...

Before filming “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” director Ryan Coogler didn’t know how to swim.
“A lot of us were raised to have fear of water,” the 36-year-old filmmaker told Variety, admitting his own trepidation and evoking the various reasons Black people have avoided — or ways they’ve been excluded — from pools and the ocean over the years. “I had to figure out how to swim so I could direct this movie.”
It’s late October and Coogler is sitting alongside two of his lead actors, Angela Bassett and Letitia Wright, at Variety’s cover shoot, just hours before the world premiere of the Marvel sequel. As “Wakanda Forever” introduces Namor, ruler of Talokan — a hidden underwater realm and surprising new threat to “Black Panther’s” fictional African kingdom of Wakanda — about half the movie’s scenes take place in the depths of the ocean.

Per the press release, "Lift Me Up" was written, "as a tribute to the extraordinary life and legacy of Chadwick Boseman." Just in case you weren't sure about your ability to make it through the film without tears, Rhianna's got you covered. The song is a collaboration between Tems, Oscar winner Ludwig Göransson, Rihanna, and Ryan Coogler.

Rihanna returns to music after a long break with “Lift Me Up,” the lead single off of the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack. “Lift Me Up” was written by Rihanna, Tems, Oscar winner Ludwig Göransson, and Black Panther director Ryan Coogler and will drop on Friday, October 28, 2022.
The original song is a moving tribute to Chadwick Boseman and was produced by Göransson.
“After speaking with Ryan and hearing his direction for the film and the song, I wanted to write something that portrays a warm embrace from all the people that I’ve lost in my life. I tried to imagine what it would feel like if I could sing to them now and express how much I miss them,” said Tems. “Rihanna has been an inspiration to me so hearing her convey this song is a great honor.

“Only the most broken people can be great leaders,” Namor (Tenoch Huerta) intones in the latest trailer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. While the first trailer for Ryan Coogler’s highly-anticipated sequel conveyed a message of grief as the central characters mourned the death of King T’Challa, reflecting audiences’ continued grief over the loss of Chadwick Boseman, the latest trailer puts a greater focus on the film’s narrative. It even hints at the inclusion of a key Marvel villain that hasn’t been announced.
Although there is still a somber tone, one that I suspect will permeate the film as a means to permit collective grieving over Boseman, this trailer is a confirmation that the death of T’Challa will not make the world smaller. Rather, Wakanda Forever looks to offer a larger tapestry to re-frame T’Challa’s legacy and...

“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” just might be the ultimate fight to keep Wakanda from going underwater…literally.
Following the death of Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), the sequel film centers on his mother Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett) warning against underwater King of Talokan, Namor (Tenoch Huerta), who threatens to take over the surface world.
“They have lost their protector,” Queen Ramonda says of the world perceiving Wakanda as weak.
Directed by Ryan Coogler, per the official synopsis, Queen Ramonda (Bassett), Shuri (Letitia Wright), M’Baku (Winston Duke), Okoye (Danai Gurira), and the Dora Milaje (Florence Kasumba) fight to protect their nation from intervening world powers in the wake of King T’Challa’s death.
As the Wakandans strive to embrace their next chapter, the heroes must band together with the help of War Dog Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) and Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) and forge a new path for the kingdom of Wakanda.

Marvel’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” got another exciting trailer Monday morning ahead of its Nov. 11 release date.
The longer trailer shows a better look at the mysterious new Black Panther, who appears to be a woman in a brand new suit. Could this be Shuri, Nakia, Okoye or someone else taking up the mantle? There are also extended looks at Namor and his underwater kingdom of Atlantis in the trailer. Staying true to the comics, Namor can also fly with his winged feet. M’Baku reveals in the trailer that the Atlanteans call Namor “K’uk’ulkan, the feather serpent god,” and that killing him would “risk eternal war.” There’s also a brief shot of the new hero Ironheart flying in her makeshift Iron Man-inspired armor.

Marvel Studios ended its long-awaited return to San Diego Comic-Con with a big splash, giving fans their first look at the trailer for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”
The emotional footage shows the cast of “Black Panther” coping with the reality of a world without Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa. Set to a rendition of Bob Marley’s “No Woman, No Cry,” fans get to check in with returning favorites like Lupita Nyong’o and Letitia Wright while also meeting some exciting new characters. As has long been rumored, Tenoch Huerta plays Namor, the Submariner. He’s joined by Mabel Cadena as Namora and Dominique Thorne as Ironheart.
While the studio has faced some large challenges as it built out its Marvel Cinematic Universe, few (if any) were as daunting as continuing the “Black Panther” franchise after Chadwick Boseman’s tragic death in 2020. Boseman’s performance as T’Challa anchored the groundbreaking superhero movie,...

Marvel is bringing fans back to Wakanda in the first trailer for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”‘
The trailer is strung together with a lyrical motif of “We gonna be alright” from Kendrick Lamar’s “Alright,” moving between images of Wakanda’s aquatic environments, futuristic technology and what appears to be a funeral with crowds of Wakandans dressed in white.
“I am Queen of the most powerful nation in the world, and my entire family is gone,” Angela Bassett’s Ramonda declares.
A question lingers over the trailer: who will take on the mantle of the Black Panther? A figure is seen in the hero’s suit at the end of the trailer, though it isn’t clarified who is in the costume.
The footage debuted at the conclusion of Marvel Studios’ massive panel at San Diego Comic-Con Saturday evening, introduced by a group of traditional African singers performing a fanfare for the follow-up’s panel.
