Almost two years ago, Netflix paid a reported $65 million for the rights to Oscar-nominated director Lee Daniels’ (Precious, The Butler) possession horror movie The Deliverance. This morning we’ve finally learned through Netflix’s “What’s Next” announcement that the buzzy horror title is finally set to make a 2024 debut.
About The Deliverance: “When Ebony Jackson, a struggling single mom, moves her mother and children into a new home, strange occurrences begin to happen, and child protective services, suspects Ebony of child abuse. But when these occurrences reveal to be demonic, Ebony not only has to battle the system for her children, but she soon finds herself in a spiritual battle against a demon for her faith, her life, and for the souls of her children. Inspired by a true story.”
The horror movie has quite the impressive cast, too.

Peacock has announced that the groundbreaking romantic comedy Bros — the first from a major studio to center on two gay men — will begin streaming exclusively on the platform on December 2nd.
The film directed by Nicholas Stoller is a smart, swoony and heartfelt story about gay men — played by Billy Eichner and Luke Macfarlane—maybe, possibly, probably, stumbling towards love. Maybe. They’re both very busy. Its cast also includes Ts Madison, Miss Lawrence, Symone, Guillermo Diaz, Guy Branum, Monica Raymund, Jim Rash, Harvey Fierstein, Bowen Yang, Amanda Bearse, Dot-Marie Jones, and many more.
Eichner and Stoller penned the script. Stoller also produced alongside Judd Apatow and Josh Church, with Eichner exec producing.
While Bros world premiered to critical acclaim at the 2022 Toronto Film Festival, it had a disappointing showing upon its September theatrical release via Universal Pictures, grossing just over 14.6M worldwide. Its co-writer and star Eichner made history with Bros,...

“Success has many fathers,” the old saying goes, “but failure is an orphan.” Nonetheless, that orphan has no shortage of forensic surgeons ready to give it an autopsy. As early as Saturday of the opening weekend of the Universal gay romantic comedy “Bros,” the Monday-morning quarterbacking began, as various corners of the internet came forward with their reasons why the film’s grosses were a disappointment.
The marketing was too focused on its status as the first major-studio LGBTQ rom-com! It was too white! The poster was off-putting! The title was vague! Billy Eichner and Luke Macfarlane aren’t big enough names to open a movie! People don’t go to rom-coms during Halloween season! People don’t go to rom-coms, full stop! The reasons seemed endless. Sometimes they were thoughtful. Sometimes.

Billy Eichner is calling out straight people for not seeing “Bros” in theaters.
The Judd Apatow-produced romantic comedy opened to 4.8 million at the box office after premiering at TIFF and receiving strong reviews. However, lead star and co-writer Eichner is bemoaning the lack of audiences showing up in theaters as “homophobic,” especially in “certain parts of the country.”
“Everyone who Isn’T a homophobic weirdo should go see Bros tonight! You will have a blast! And it is special and uniquely powerful to see this particular story on a big screen, esp for queer folks who don’t get this opportunity often. I love this movie so much. Go Bros!!!,” Eichner tweeted.
“Bros” centers on a podcast host (Eichner) who is tasked with writing a romance film that appeals to straight audiences, in a meta twist. In real life, Eichner penned the script for “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” with director Nicholas Stoller,...

Billy Eichner has said he is “disappointed” that “straight people didn’t show up for” his new movie Bros.
The film, which is being pegged as Hollywood’s first major gay romcom, has received acclaim from critics, but has not been a hit at the box office.
It is estimated to make just 4.8m (approximately £4.3m) – half of what Universal had hoped – during its opening weekend.
In a Twitter thread shared on Sunday (2 October), Eichner wrote: “Last night I snuck in and sat in the back of a sold-out theatre playing Bros in LA.
“The audience howled with laughter start to finish, burst into applause at the end, and some were wiping away tears as they walked out. Really. I am Very proud of this movie.”
He added: “Even with glowing reviews, great Rotten Tomatoes scores, an A CinemaScore, etc, straight people, especially in certain parts of the country, just...

Billy Eichner is getting the box office results of his movie Bros and although the film is underperforming, he’s “proud” of the work he did on the big screen.

Despite glowing reviews for the Judd Apatow-produced film, Bros has not been a hit at the box office and is estimated to only make 4.8M during its opening weekend, half of what Universal was estimating. Eichner acknowledged that the romantic comedy he stars in isn’t tracking within a certain segment of the population in the country.

Much of the discussion around the release of the Billy Eichner-starring, Judd Apatow-produced romantic comedy Bros has been about the semantics of its historic nature.
Yes, it’s one of the first major studio movies starring two gay leads played by two openly gay actors. Yes, it’s part of a small, but growing handful of LGBTQ-inclusive films upending the mainstream rom-com genre. But it’s another detail — frequently thrown out during the film’s press tour as a sign of its groundbreaking nature — that perhaps makes the film most notable. And that’s its all, openly LGBTQ+ cast.
It was a decision, star and co-writer Eichner told The Hollywood Reporter during the film’s New York red carpet premiere, believed was important from the pitch.

If you’re an Applebee’s employee in Des Moines who wants to see Billy Eichner’s romantic comedy Bros, Guy Branum just made it a lot easier by serving it up on a platter — free of charge.
The comedian, who plays the witty best friend of Eichner’s character in the Nicholas Stoller-directed film, has bought out a showing specifically for staff at five Applebee’s restaurants in the greater Des Moines area. Locations in and around Iowa’s capital city include Merle Hay, Se 14th Street, Altoona, Jordan Creek and Ankeny locations with the screening set for Oct. 3 at 2 p.m. at AMC Classic Johnston 16 in Johnston, Iowa.
“We are very grateful,” noted Iowa Applebee’s general manager David Hintz of the news as insiders estimate approximately 10-15 employees from each location will turn up at the screening, presumably scheduled...

“Smile,” the horror film from Paramount and writer-director Parker Finn, made 2 million at the box office Thursday in its preview screenings from roughly 3,000 screens and that began at 7 p.m. It opens on 3,648 screens this weekend.
“Smile” opens alongside Universal’s “Bros,” the LGBTQ+ and R-rated romantic comedy from writer and star Billy Eichner. “Bros” brought in 500,000 at the box office in its own preview screenings from 2,700 theaters that began at 5 p.m. It opens on 3,350 screens this weekend.
Neither “Smile” or “Bros” is expected to break the 20 million mark this weekend, a disappointing trend for movies this month at the box office, though both have modest budgets and hope to turn a profit on the backs of strong reviews for each and some creative viral marketing, whether it’s eerily grinning fans at a baseball game or Eichner running down New York City streets with Paul Rudd and a pack of lesbians.

Nick Stoller and Billy Eichner’s “Bros” has plenty going for it beyond its allegedly boundary-breaking elements — Eichner, who co-wrote the film and stars in it, called it “the first gay rom-com ever released by a major studio” earlier this year, which is kind of true, but also not at all essential for enjoying the film on its own merits — and should (hopefully) prove to be box office catnip for audiences starved for funny, sexy, sweet romantic comedies.
“Bros” stars an entirely Lgtbq+ cast and centers on Eichner as a jaded podcast host who falls for Hallmark Channel alum Luke Macfarlane; the cast also includes Harvey Fierstein, Bowen Yang, Symone, Miss Lawrence, Guy Branum, Guillermo Diaz, Amanda Bearse, and Ts Madison.
As Eichner’s Bobby Lieber jokes throughout the film — it’s even part and parcel of its latest trailer — finding a way to tell gay stories for straight audiences is confusing at best,...

Much fanfare has been made about the momentous nature of "Bros," the groundbreaking rom-com from Billy Eichner and Nick Stoller that acts as a love letter to the entire Lgbtqia+ community. Not only is it a rarity (a major studio romcom about two men falling in love), it also touts a cast primarily made up of LGBT+ actors. But for stars like Ts Madison and Miss Lawrence, making a hilarious movie came first, and making history was just an extra special bonus.
The film follows Eichner as Bobby Leiber, a cynical New York podcaster who falls for the relationship-phobic Aaron (Luke Macfarlane), who seems like his polar opposite in every way, except for the fact that they share a magical, natural chemistry. In between finding his footing in this budding romance, Bobby is also in the middle of opening a museum dedicated to the hidden history of the LGBTQ community.

One of the most memorable experiences I had at TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival) this year was attending the world premiere of Bros. For those not in the know, this is the first mainstream Lgtbq romantic comedy financed by a studio, and it stars Billy Eichner, who also co-wrote and directed the film. For all the press it’s receiving, one thing that seems to be missing is that at the end of the day, Bros is hilarious and works well for a mainstream audience. It’s Lgtbq-themed, but it’s a universal story everyone can enjoy. Indeed, watching it at Tff was terrific because the audience reacted to it like it was a rock concert, screaming in laughter from beginning to end.

Let’s get the historical housekeeping out of the way first: “Bros” is the first gay rom-com to be released by a major studio, an accomplishment with its share of codicils — there have been other queer films released by majors but they weren’t romantic comedies, there have been LGBTQ+ films of all stripes released by studios, but always by their indie shingle.
That’s a lot of historical baggage for any one film to have to carry, but it matters that the film succeeds at the rom-com just as much as it deserves notice for its narrowly defined status as “first.” Star and co-writer Billy Eichner spins a lot of plates here, crafting a hilarious and heartfelt film that also acknowledges the challenging and often hidden history of queer people in American society.

Billy Eichner’s “Bros” is bowing out of the Middle East.
Universal Pictures confirmed the first R-rated gay rom-com ever made by a major studio will not debut in Middle East markets “due to cultural and commercial reasons,” per a source. The film premieres in the U.S. September 30 and will be rolled out in most international markets throughout October and November.
“Bros” is expected to not screen in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Kuwait, especially after those respective nations have previously banned films with queer themes, much like “Lightyear” and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” earlier this year.
“Bros” stars Eichner as a podcaster and museum executive who has a complicated courtship with a lawyer who is seemingly out of his league, played by Luke Macfarlane. “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” helmer Nicholas Stoller directs the film with an entirely queer cast, including Bowen Yang, Jim Rash,...

Billy Eichner knows much has been written and lauded about Nick Stoller’s Bros being the first gay romantic comedy from a major Hollywood studio as it had its world premiere on Friday night at the Toronto Film Festival.
“But we have to acknowledge the decades of LGBTQ folks who did not get this opportunity, right? Ok, so everyone likes us now. But why did it take so long? I think that’s a question worth asking,” Eichner said at the Bros press conference in Toronto on Saturday morning.
The Bros star also paid tribute to Universal for getting behind the gay rom-com. “They could have wanted some soft, cheesy sitcom thing and we gave them a hard R Apatow/Stoller rom-com, which is very unapologetic, and they’ve gotten behind it in a major way, so we’re thankful,” Eichner said.

The major studio rom-com is back with a flourish, but it took Billy Eichner and Nicholas Stoller to prove the format still works, even if this time it is two gay men who are the ones who find love against all odds.
Although Bros is indeed making history as the first major studio film with an all LGBTQ principal cast, and the first to star and be co-written by an openly gay man, ultimately what it has to say about how hard it is to find the perfect someone to spend your life with is truly universal. Don’t get me wrong. Much of the humor in Bros comes from situations and attitudes specific to gay culture, but you don’t have to be gay to laugh out loud at most of it.

Being a "first" for representation in film is both an honor and, more often than not, a clear sign of larger systemic problems. So it is with "Bros," a film that holds the distinction of being the first gay rom-com by a major studio with a primarily Lgbtqia+ main cast. Check that: It's the first movie of that ilk to be given a wide theatrical release, lest anyone accuse me of trying to erase Andrew Ahn's utterly delightful "Fire Island" (which premiered on Hulu earlier this year) from its rightly-earned place in the echelons of queer cinema.
Billy Eichner stars in "Bros" as Bobby, a 40-something live-to-work type podcaster and museum head who's shocked to find himself stumbling into a romance with Aaron (Luke Macfarlane), a macho lawyer and his polar opposite. “Bros,” the meta all-queer rom-com from “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” scribes Billy Eichner and Nicholas Stoller, wanted to find the next “openly gay Ryan Reynolds or an openly gay Paul Rudd” to play the love interest opposite Eichner’s lead.
Why?
“I just assumed that my love interest had to be played by a big movie star, which would mean a straight man because we don’t have any openly gay movie stars in America,” Eichner told Entertainment Weekly about casting the film, out September 20. “We have TV stars, a lot of openly gay actors, but a movie star…”
Eichner continued, “We’ve never had an openly gay Ryan Reynolds, or an openly gay Paul Rudd, or an openly gay Kevin Hart, they just do not exist. Hollywood did not allow for it.”

Billy Eichner is creating his own meta cinematic universe thanks to Universal Pictures’ “Bros.”
The queer rom-com is comprised of an entirely Lgtbq+ cast, and centers on Eichner playing a podcast host who is tasked with writing a romance film that appeals to straight audiences. In real life, Eichner penned the script for “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” with director Nicholas Stoller, who also helms “Bros.” The film premieres in theaters September 30.
The trailer shows Eichner’s character arguing that gay and straight relationships really don’t have much in common, calling the monolithic myth “bullshit.” Meanwhile, he falls for Luke Macfarlane, who leads a star-studded ensemble cast including Harvey Fierstein, Bowen Yang, Symone, Miss Lawrence, Guy Branum, Guillermo Diaz, Amanda Bearse, and Ts Madison.

“I think it’s important that before we got one movie about a gay couple we got two movies about a talking hedgehog,” Billy Eichner said Wednesday night.
The ever-amusing Eichner made an appearance in Las Vegas for Universal’s presentation at CinemaCon. The comic, who’s being awarded Comedy Star of the Year at the industry showcase, is the mastermind behind “Bros,” a rom-com set to be released September 30 that has a cast entirely featuring out LGBTQ actors.
He’s the star and co-writer of the script, while Nicholas Stoller took on directing duties. The ensemble includes Luke Macfarlane, Harvey Fierstein, Bowen Yang, Symone, Miss Lawrence, Guy Branum, Guillermo Diaz, Amanda Bearse, and Ts Madison.
Straight actors have played gay characters many, many times across Hollywood history. (The Advocate has even compiled a list of 60 times a straight actor has received an Academy Award nomination for playing a gay character.

It wasn’t Billy on the Street but Billy Eichner on the Strip at this year’s edition of CinemaCon, as he wowed the exhibitor crowd with clips from his upcoming rom-com “Bros.” The film has been heralded as the first studio romantic comedy to feature an entirely LGBTQ+ cast, and the studio was not afraid to sing (or in Eichner’s case shout) praises.
Eichner was in Las Vegas to introduce “the most exciting thing to happen in Caesar’s Palace since Adele refunds.” And he was astonished that we got two movies about a “talking hedgehog” before a film with a wholly gay cast. But he said that while it provides opportunities for underrepresented voices, it still is an entertaining film that can sell tickets. (“You don’t think lesbians love Raisinets?”)
“It’s a bit of a cliche, but it’s really true. Representation matters,” Eichner said.

Sony Pictures Classics is set to release awards contender The Father in select New York and Los Angeles theaters today before expanding nationwide March 12 before landing on PVOD on March 26. That’s quite a theater-to-digital journey for the Florian Zeller-directed drama starring Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman.
The film, which premiered at Sundance in 2020, is adapted from Zeller’s 2014 play which starred Frank Langella, who won a Tony Award his performance. Zeller and Christopher Hampton adapted the play which follows Anthony (Hopkins), a defiant 80-year-old man who lives alone and refuses the carers that his daughter, Anne (Colman), encouragingly introduces — and she needs the help. She can’t make daily visits to her father and his grip on reality is unraveling.
The Father marks Zeller feature directorial debut — and what a debut it is.
The film has received critical acclaim and received numerous Golden Globe and SAG Award nominations.

With The United States vs. Billie Holiday streaming on Hulu, both longtime and new fans will likely be clamoring for more of the legendary jazz singer, who died in 1959 at the age of 44. Born Eleanora Fagan, Billie Holiday was among the targets of Federal Bureau of Narcotics head Harry Anslinger, whose racist agenda fueled a so-called crackdown on marijuana and heroin. That torment, as well as the music icon’s life, is the subject of the upcoming Lee Daniels biopic starring Andra Day as Holiday and Trevante Rhodes as undercover FBI agent-turned-lover Jimmy Fletcher.

In Lee Daniel’s upcoming “The United States vs. Billie Holiday,” coming to Hulu on Feb. 26, Andra Day plays legendary Billie Holiday. The film centers around her 1940s court trial and her encounters with the Federal Bureau of Narcotics.
Leslie Jordan plays journalist Reginald Lord Devine, who sits down with Holiday for an interview to discuss “Strange Fruit.” The song, which condemns the U.S. history of lynching Black people, caused Holiday to come under fire by the agency.
Of Jordan’s casting, Daniels says, “I’m a big fan of Leslie’s and I’ve always wanted to work with him. When I was thinking about this character — a journalist who interviews celebrities down on their luck – I envisioned a fusion of Quentin Crisp and Skip E. Lowe, a role I knew only Leslie could bring to life.”

"Those lyrics provoke people." Hulu has confirmed February 26 as the awards-qualifying US debut of The United States vs Billie Holiday, a relatively late awards season entry that is generating strong buzz for Andra Day’s performance as the celebrated jazz singer.
Paramount had been set to distribute until financier New Slate Ventures recognised the current pandemic landscape, in which roughly 40% of US cinemas are open, was unsuitable for a theatrical launch.
A deal was struck with Hulu in December and the film will debut solely on the platform in the US, with no theatrical component. Paramount previously set a February 26 release date.
