The subject of endless sports talk over the past few weeks, Golden State Warriors locker room leader Draymond Green spoke out today about his recent 12-game suspension for taking a swing at Phoenix Suns center Jusuf Nurkic during a game on Dec. 13.
Green has been suspended four times since March. His most recent involuntary time away came just six games after he served a five-game suspension without pay for “escalating an on-court altercation” putting Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert in a headlock. Needless to say, the sports talk machine has been in overdrive parsing the incidents and the details of the four-time NBA champion’s most recent transgression.
The Warriors are a cornerstone franchise in the current NBA with four recent titles, a groundbreaking style of play and, oh, the greatest shooter in the history of the game (Stephen Curry). Green’s stats may not be gaudy, but he is...

There is a snippet of “The Illiad, or The Poem of Force,” Simone Weil’s 1940 essay about the blind poet Homer’s Trojan War epic, that has always stuck with me: “The progress of the war in the Iliad is simply a continual game of seesaw. The victor of the moment feels himself invincible, even though, only a few hours before, he may have experienced defeat; he forgets to treat victory as a transitory thing.”
The Golden State Warriors seemed invincible once. Now, far from it. Nobody saw this coming five years ago,...

Taking down the Boston Celtics 103-90 in Game 6 of the 2022 NBA Finals in the Massachusetts metropolis last night, the Golden State Warriors cemented their dynasty with their fourth championship in the past decade.
Now well ensconced in the pantheon of basketball, the big win for Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, Klay Thompson and their teammates, plus coach Steve Kerr may be all the sweeter after the past two seasons when it looked like the shine was off the Bay Area team. Celebrating with trophy in hand on the floor of the Td Garden in Boston on Thursday, the Warriors and New England born team bosses Peter Gruber and Joe Lacob were gleaming with pride and exhilaration.
Having weathered rough ratings seas over the past two years of the Covid-19 pandemic, ABC must be feeling pretty victorious, at least in the short term. They had the most watched show of Thursday’s primetime,...

A twinning team! On Wednesday, March 16, just hours after being suspended from Instagram, Kanye West took his and Kim Kardashian's son Saint West, 6, to the Golden State Warriors' game against the Boston Celtics at the Chase Center in San Francisco, Calif. on Wednesday, March 16. Sporting matching leather jackets, dark hoodies, jeans and black boots, the duo sat courtside alongside the home team's co-owners Joe Lacob and Peter Guber. While they were there, Saint snacked on Mike and Ike candy and he and Kanye, 44, spoke with a few of the athletes, including Boston Celtics player Jaylen Brown. The Massachusetts-based team won the game with a final score of...

With the 2020 Winter Olympics in Beijing just 18 days away and U.S. diplomats boycotting the games over what a spokesperson for the U.S. Embassy in Beijing recently called China’s “ongoing genocide and crimes against humanity in Xinjiang, and other human rights abuses,” one of the most outspoken owners of one of the NBA’s flagship franchises weighed in.
Billionaire Chamath Palihapitiya, who is a minority owner of the Golden State Warriors alongside majority owners Peter Guber and Joe Lacob, expressed what he called “a very hard, ugly truth” about China’s treatment of its Uyghur minority-muslim population in the Xinjiang autonomous region.
“Nobody cares about what’s happening to the Uyghurs. You bring it up because you really care, and I think that’s nice that you care, the rest of us don’t care,” Palihapitiya said. “I’m telling you a very hard, ugly truth, okay? Of...

Beyoncé and Jay-Z were front and center at game three of the NBA finals in Oakland, CA, on Wednesday. The 37-year-old singer and 49-year-old rapper sat courtside as the hometown Golden State Warriors battled the Toronto Rapters at the Oracle Arena. Naturally, Bey looked fabulous, rocking a neutral ensemble with a longline grommet jacket. Meanwhile, Jay - who recently reached billionaire status - sported an all-black outfit from head to toe.
Bey and Jay's appearance also generated some buzz for another reason. In a video posted by ESPN, the dynamic duo were waving at a camera when the clip captured an *ahem* interesting moment between Jay-Z, Beyoncé, and Nicole Curran - the wife of Warriors owner Joe Lacob. At one point, Nicole is seen leaning over Bey to chat with Jay, and the Beyhive would like to know exactly what was going on.

This was quite the eventful week, huh? The Jonas Brothers dropped their first album in 10 years, Prince Harry stepped out with half of a tree in his pocket, and Warriors majority owner Joe Lacob's wife, Nicole Curran, grabbed headlines for invading Beyoncé's space during game three of the NBA finals. Serious question: would you lean over Beyoncé? Surprisingly, my highlight of the week wasn't Harry or Meghan Markle-related this time; instead, it was Rihanna looking so happy with her billionaire boo, Hassan Jameel, on vacation in Italy. Ah, love! See what else happened in this week's edition of Things You Missed This Week!

Beyoncé and Jay-z are feeling that Golden State of mind on Wednesday evening. The A-list couple sat courtside at Game 3 of the NBA Finals with the Toronto Raptors facing off against the Golden State Warriors. As of publishing time, the series is currently tied 1-1 and this is the first game of the finals being played in Oakland, Calif. Bey and Jay arrived at Oracle Arena a few minutes into the first quarter and immediately caused social media to erupt in quite the frenzy. Even the NBA's official Twitter account posted about their arrival. The "Formation" singer and her husband looked stylish as always as they sat next to Golden State Warriors owner Joe Lacob on the court. Jay-z wore a...

Multiple NBA teams have had high-level conversations about doing away with the term "owner" over the past year -- and at least two teams have already made the switch, TMZ Sports has learned. We're told the conversations essentially center around the idea that the term, owner -- in a league where the majority of the players are black -- feels racially insensitive. Several high-ranking sources from multiple teams tell us people have been talking about...

John Cena says the WWE is finally getting the attention it deserves by Hollywood and the professional sports world.
“I’m just glad that no longer are we looked down upon, not only by the sport industry, but by the performing arts industry,” Cena told Variety on Tuesday night in Beverly Hills at Sports Illustrated’s Sportsperson of the Year Awards, where the “Bumblebee” star was the recipient of the Muhammad Ali Legacy Award.
Recognized by Sports Illustrated for his efforts that go beyond the WWE ring, Cena tirelessly involves himself with the Make-a-Wish Foundation (granting over 500 wishes), anti-bullying, equality, cancer awareness and support of the troops.
“I think nowadays, athletes are understanding that and literally it’s all just sports entertainment,” Cena said, “Which I am very grateful for because years ago I wouldn’t have been any way legitimized by sport.”

With Hollywood in a state of disruption, the town’s producers face a challenge to creatively reinvent themselves. Reflecting this process, Peter Guber, long a top movie dealmaker, this week set forth plans for the grand opening in 2019 of a privately funded 18,000-seat stadium (Chase Center) that will totally transform the Mission Bay section of San Francisco. Last year, a Guber-backed $350 million soccer stadium for Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles Football Club in downtown L.A. also opened its doors –- the city’s first new open-air arena since the 1960s.
Why is a major filmmaker now producing stadiums? It’s part of Guber’s emergence as a major sports maven, encompassing co-ownership of the Golden State Warriors as well as the Los Angeles Dodgers, in addition to major stakes in entities like AXiomatic and Team Liquid, representing entry into gaming and e-sports. As in former years, Guber has...
