“Americanish,” billed as the first romantic comedy about Muslims helmed by a Muslim-American woman, is coming very soon to a theater (potentially) near you.
TheWrap exclusively debuted the trailer for Inam Zawahry’s directorial effort in May 2021. The film will debut in theaters in California and Arizona on Oct. 6 prior to its VOD premiere on Nov. 14. Sony Pictures International picked up the distribution rights in January of this year after a successful festival run.
Inspired by Aizzah Fatima’s critically acclaimed one-woman show “Dirty Paki Lingerie,” the picture first played at the CAAMFest, which is the largest Asian American film festival in the nation. It won the Audience Award and has since won 25 festival awards prior to the acquisition.
Zawahry spoke to TheWrap previously, when the trailer debuted, and noted that “What’s really important about this film is that is shows that American Muslim women are not a monolith...

Episode nine of Disney+’s National Treasure: Edge of History is jam-packed with surprises, so buckle in. The episode kicks off with Jess (Lisette Olivera) and her father, Rafael (Jacob Vargas), being led through a private airport by Billie (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and her team. Rafael has a plan but Jess has one too, of course, and lets him know she has Ethan’s phone.
Before boarding the private plane, Billie reminds them that she heard everything and wants Rafael’s journal. She orders Kacey (Breeda Wool) to search Jess.
Elsewhere, Oren (Antonio Cipriano) is currently freaking out. He and Liam (Jake Austin Walker) went to Agent Ross (Lyndon Smith) and told her about Myles – his grandpa’s old nurse – being murdered. When Agent Ross checks out the scene, Myles’s body is gone and the room’s clean.

Lisette Olivera in ‘National Treasure: Edge of History’ episode 6 (Disney/Brian Roedel)
We’re halfway through the first season of National Treasure: Edge of History and the action is really heating up. Episode six, “Frenemies,” picks up right where episode five ended as Jess (Lisette Olivera) hops into a car with Billie (Catherine Zeta-Jones) to avoid the police. Billie claims she knew Rafael (Jess’s dad) and, of course, that piques Jess’s interest.
Billie shows her a medallion – the same one that Jess has – and claims to not only be a daughter of the Plumed Serpent but also insists they’re on the same side.
After Jess texts her friends to assure them she’s fine, she agrees to go to dinner with Billie. Billie shows Jess the medallion again and shows her a picture of her father, Rafael, with another man. Billie explains that the man in the photo is her brother Sebastian,...

Catherine Zeta-Jones in ‘National Treasure: Edge of History’ episode 5 (Disney/Brian Roedel)
Disney+’s National Treasure: Edge of History episode five catches up with Billie (Catherine Zeta-Jones) who’s busy working with her lackeys to try and figure out what Elvis’s riddle means. Dario (Darri Ingolfsson) thinks he figured it out with his high-tech programs, but Billie knocks his theory out of the running. She believes “twin serpents” doesn’t refer to a “tail” but instead is about a “tale.”
Billie doesn’t know it, but that’s also what Jess latched onto.
Meanwhile, Jess (Lisette Olivera) is having second thoughts about Liam being the mole. However, Tasha (Zuri Reed) is certain he’s Billie’s mole and attempts to convince Jess of that as she sweeps their apartment for bugs. Liam’s ears must be ringing because just then he sends a text to Jess asking her if...

Justin Bartha and Lisette Olivera in ‘National Treasure: Edge of History’ episode 4 (Disney/Brian Roedel)
The action picks up with Jess (Lisette Olivera) deep in thought trying to decipher the message she heard from none other than Elvis Presley (in episode three) as Disney+’s National Treasure: Edge of History episode four begins. A knock at the door interrupts her concentration, and it turns out that Ethan’s apologizing via cupcakes.
Oren (Antonio Cipriano) is deep in his own investigation and asks Ethan (Jordan Rodrigues) if he wants to help. It’s a no-go for Ethan; he’d rather spend time with his new girlfriend.
Meanwhile, Jess is getting frustrated that she can’t figure out Elvis’s riddle. Tasha (Zuri Reed) is there helping by talking her through it.

Americanish
“Sam is going to be so successful,” Ameera (Shenaz Treasury) gushes as she lies between the beds of her two cousins, Samira and Maryam (Salena Qureshi). “And you’re going to be a great doctor,” she tells Maryam. “Everybody’s going to get what they want.” Including, hopefully, Ameera, newly arrived in the US on a six-month visa and hoping to get some help from her khala to find the answer to her own dreams, namely, marrying a Pakistani-American doctor.
The film’s title, with that little “ish” added to the end of America, neatly sums up the world of these young women caught between two cultures: one, overwhelmingly American, into which they are born, or into which they arrive; the second, the culture of their homeland, or their parents’ homeland, with ties to culture that sometimes are in direct conflict with the former. Any child of immigrants knows that there are always expectations,...

Iman Zawahry brings back the feel-good romcom to theaters with “Americanish,” a Pakistani American tale of four lovelorn women in New York City. Khala (Lillete Dubey) is a single mother eager to marry off her two daughters and niece, Sam (Aizzah Fatima), Maryam (Salena Qureshi), and Ameera (Shenaz Treasury). Only there’s one problem – or, well, two, or actually kind of three: finding love is a lot harder than it seems.
For the Asian American International Film Festival, we had the opportunity to talk to Zawahry over Zoom. Zawahry is animated and clearly excited; we’re lucky, really, to catch her on the day before her NYC in-person premiere. Over the next half-hour, we bounce around the representation and romance, talking through the what it means to be a Muslim American woman filmmaker today.
This interview has been edited and redacted for clarity.
I’ve read that you and Aizzah Fatima co-wrote “Americanish.

Netflix may have built its original series initially around adults, but these days, it really loves teens — especially teens who behave badly. That’s the cornerstone of “The Society,” a series constructed around the premise of what happens to 200 teenagers who think they’re going on a school field trip, and are instead deposited in a carbon copy version of their small town, except with no adults and no younger children around.
Things aren’t too bad at first for the teens — the power is still on, and there’s a supermarket full of food — but the situation quickly takes on new urgency as they slowly realize that they’ve been completely cut off from the rest of the world. How, exactly, the teens ended up in this mirror universe is one question that only sort of haunts the series, as eventually the mystery behind its premise gets de-emphasized in...

A bunch of teens get a renewed sense of freedom in Netflix's new drama series...
There's a new Netflix series on the way in a couple of weeks that could be worth a watch. The Society - sadly nothing to do with Brian Yuzna's body horror classic, Society - is aiming for a The 100 meets Lord Of The Flies kinda vibe, as a group of teenagers are "mysteriously transported" to a strange version of their home town that has the added bonus (for some) of "no parents."
Soon, the kids' off the chain approach to living descends into dangerous territory, as they try to piece together why they're at the centre of these strange events, and how to get back to reality.

Netflix has launched the first trailer for its new teen series, ‘The Society’ where parents are a myth and freedom reigns supreme.
The show follows a group of teenagers who are mysteriously transported to a facsimile of their wealthy New England town without any trace of their parents. Netflix caters very well to the younger crowd.
But in doing so, they never lose sight of the other audience members who might tune into one of their shows.
The Society can be compared to a modern-day Lord of the Flies, and you know how that story resonated with anyone who read it (or watched adaptations).

The first teaser for the upcoming Netflix series “The Society” might make parents think twice about leaving their teenage children home alone.
Described as a modern take on “Lord of the Flies,” the series follows a group of teenagers who are mysteriously transported to a place identical to their wealthy New England town — but their parents are nowhere to be found.
“Mom, it’s me again. Where is everyone?” a teenage girl asks as she leaves her unresponsive mother a voicemail as Billie Eilish’s “Bury a Friend” plays in the background.

"I know what you've been looking for, I'm not stupid." Orion Pictures has released the first official trailer for an indie drama titled All These Small Moments, from first-time filmmaker Melissa Miller Costanzo, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year. Shot on the streets of New York City, the film is about a struggling family, and one teen boy who is infatuated with an older woman he notices on the bus. Described as an "absorbing coming-of-age tale with heartfelt, nuanced storytelling and genuine intimacy." All These Small Moments stars Brendan Meyer, with Jemima Kirke, Molly Ringwald, Harley Quinn Smith, Brian d'Arcy James, Salena Qureshi, and Roscoe Orman. At first glance, this reminds me of Noah Baumbach's The Squid and the Whale, about a dysfunctional NYC family and all the issues they have. Here's the first trailer (+ poster) for Melissa Miller Costanzo's All These Small Moments, on...
