ReviewTovino plays the protagonist writer with nuance and restraint, while Rima is charming as Bhargavi. The actors, however, struggle to deliver their lines from a 60-year-old script in a manner that suits modern sensibilities. There is a scene about halfway through Aashiq Abu’s Neelavelicham. The film’s unnamed writer protagonist (Tovino Thomas) is walking towards his rented bungalow, only to suddenly stop in his tracks, his eyes wide, staring spellbound at the vision in front of him. Bathed in a magical blue glow, the house, famously inhabited by a forlorn ghost, is beckoning him to come in and finish writing her story. As he enters the house in awe, transcendent blue hues enveloping him, he thanks his dear ghost, Bhargavi, for giving him this ‘neela velicham’ (blue radiance). It is at this point that Aashiq’s vision as a filmmaker, to remake A Vincent’s 1964 classic Bhargavi Nilayam, truly comes alive.

ReviewAshraf Hamza’s film, written by Chemban Vinod, gives a lighter version of a bigger problem, treats it with humour and has a very flawed hero taking the lead.CrisBheemante Vazhi After a regular morning ride by two friends on a motorbike, squeezed through the narrow road-less paths between an array of houses, and a movie title that scrolls through the place like a brown caterpillar – it is clear what Bheemante Vazhi is going to be about. Creating a path for the people in the neighbourhood, so they won’t need to squeeze themselves or lift the elderly over fences to reach a road. It is not exactly the heroic adventure of one man speaking for many, or winning fights against the dreaded red tape. It could be a miniature of the bigger, more worrisome issue of people suffering because they can’t reach roads in times of emergencies. But...

Lijo Jose Pellissery has his own definitions of movie making, which is a bold stand and many a time has nothing to do with the norms. And still, his conviction of each project is what keeps the subjects and treatments endearing for the viewer.
“Jallikatu” had a spectacular premiere at Toronto International film festival and later was screened at Busan film festival before it was released worldwide.
It is about a remote village in Thrissur which is obsessed with buffalo meat. Every day, a buffalo is slaughtered to satisfy the lust for meat. One fine morning, the buffalo gets away from the shed in which it was about to be slaughtered. It runs amok in the village creating havoc. The butcher, his assistant and later an estranged butcher (now with a rifle) all try to catch the buffalo as the villagers join in the frenzy. What happens in the next...

Film CommentaryOn the surface, 'Jallikattu' is about a village chasing a buffalo that's broken free. But beneath that, it's the near breakdown of civilisation as we know it. Sowmya Rajendran*Spoilers ahead When I was a schoolgirl, I remember a train journey when two men were fighting over a berth late at night. With utter disregard to the sleeping passengers, they kept shouting and throwing one 'challengu' after another at each other. I woke up and started giggling helplessly at the intensity of their ridiculous fight as my mother desperately tried to shush me, not wanting to anger them further. The desire to establish who's the alpha male even in the most juvenile of situations has become a subject of interest in contemporary Malayalam cinema. Starting with Maheshinte Prathikaram to the recent Kumbalangi Nights and now Jallikattu (based on a story by S Hareesh), these films break down...

MollywoodIn 95 minutes, the moments build together a mini version of the world, exposing its filth.Cris Moments do not just pass by in Lijo Jose Pellissery’s Jallikattu. Every one of them is accounted for, the tick-tocks of an unusually loud clock making sure you notice an eyelid opening, a breath inhaled. The movie begins in darkness, switches to daylight and goes back to the comforts of a night lit by flickering torches. Before you dwell into the tale of a buffalo on the loose and the many meanings the script brings, you learn to immerse yourself in the moments, one after another. Lijo’s brilliance is almost taken for granted, a given. Word had travelled faster than the movie, about the applause it had won from people who didn’t know the language. It’s not easy to shake off the pressure and watch Jallikattu on a clean slate.

A couple times a year, a film comes along, seemingly out of nowhere, and proceeds to unexpectedly tear the roof off theaters, and Lijo Jose Pellissery's Jallikattu easily runs away with that distinction in 2019. His 91-minute disaster epic is so well-executed, it deserves to be seen by as many eyeballs as possible. It's just that good. Presenting a world of contained chaos that's achingly beautiful to behold, it blazes a path straight to hell.
In a small village in India, the day-to-day routine is both monotonous and calming. Pellissery uses quick montages to initially introduce a dozen characters—some of them pivotal to the proceedings and others who will get caught up in the rush that follows. A steady rhythm sets up the local hierarchy and standings of focal figures. Chief among them is the local butcher, a man who takes pride in the quality & importance of his work.

Mollywood'Guppy' bombed at the box office but earned good reviews subsequently.Tnm StaffMore than a year and a half after the Malayalam film Guppy starring actor Tovino Thomas hit the theatres, the film is set to be re-released. Actor Tovino, who is currently enjoying the success of his latest film Mayaanadhi, took to Facebook to announce that his 2016 film Guppy will be re-released in a few theatres in Kerala. Tovino shared a poster from the film that said Guppy will be re-released on January 21 at 8 am and will be shown in three theatres across the state - in Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam and Malappuram. Directed by Johnpaul George, the film had failed to make an impact when it was initially released in August, 2016. However, people who had watched the film on DVD had shared commendable reviews about the movie a few weeks later. In October 2016, weeks after theatres across the state had stopped screening the movie, Tovino took to Facebook to ask social media users about their take on the possibility of re-releasing the movie. In his post in Malayalam, Tovino had said: "I am putting up this post as per the instruction of the producer. A lot of people had said that it was indeed a loss for them that they were not able to watch Guppy in the theatres. Did you make such comments sincerely? Shall we re-release the film? Will you all go and watch it?" Tovino had also said that scores of people were watching the movie on their phones and laptops and that this was the reason for asking whether Guppy must be re-released. Tovino's post had garnered widespread attention, with many users wondering why a good film like Guppy did not get noticed when it was released in the theatres. Although box office success eluded the movie when it was released, when the Kerala State Film Awards were announced in March, 2017, Guppy went on to win laurels. Vishnu Vijay bagged the award for the best background score, Chethal Jayalal won the Best Child Artiste Award, Stephy Xavier won the award for the Best Costume Designer and Suraj won the Best Singer (Male) Award, all for Guppy. Over and above this, the film's cinematographer Gireesh Gangadharan also received a Special Jury Award.

Those of us who are die-hard fans of Malayalam director Lijo Jose Pellissery were wondering how he would ever follow up his experimental crime thriller Eratta Kuzhal/Double Barrel. Last fall came the announcement of Angamaly Diaries: produced by Vijay Babu's Friday Film House (Philips and the Monkey Pen, Aadu), written by actor Chemban Vinod Jose (who has been in all of Pellissery's films), with music by Prashant Pillai (the composer for all of Ljp's films as well) and cinematography by Gireesh Gangadharan (Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi, Kali, Guppy). A casting call for the film revealed the news that Ljp had decided to go with 86 newcomers in the film, and the film seems set to rely on "pukka local" flavour to set the tone. Angamaly Diaries is...
