When Da’Vine Joy Randolph joined “Only Murders in the Building” as Detective Dee Williams, she initially thought her role would amount to just that: the law enforcement killjoy who gets in the way of crime-solving and podcasting adventures of Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short) and Mabel (Selena Gomez). “I thought she was going to be the cop and she comes through and does her ‘Law & Order’ monologue and [peace] out,” Randolph tells Gold Derby (watch the exclusive video interview above). “It’s been really wonderful to see how she’s grown and in particular how my character is dealing with life stuff in the midst of all of this.”
The Tony nominee was shocked when showrunner and co-creator John Hoffman told her that the sixth episode of Season 1, “To Protect and Serve,” would be told from Detective Williams’ perspective. Besides revealing that Williams is expecting a baby boy with her...

Ari’el Stachel, the actor who won a Tony Award for his performance in Broadway’s The Band’s Visit, has departed the Public Theater’s much-anticipated Off Broadway world premiere production of The Visitor just weeks after the cast, creative team and the Public’s leadership delayed previews to address the new musical’s depictions of race and Arab-American representation.
In a short statement, the theater company said, “The Public Theater and Ari’el Stachel have made a mutual decision that he will step away from The Visitor and his role in the production. We are grateful for his artistry and participation over the past six years. We wish Ari well in his future endeavors.”
The new musical, written by the Pulitzer Prize-winning Next to Normal team of Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey, with a book by Kwame Kwei-Armah and direction by Tony-winning Daniel Sullivan, is based on the 2007 film of...

Quarantine sure stoked the creative juices of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” team. Normally, they’d be busy working on a new season of “Maisel” at this point. But since they’re following Covid-19 stay-at-home orders, the show’s dancers, musicians, cast and crew instead put together a 10-minute music video.
The video, which Amazon Prime Video will share with all TV Academy members on Monday, was the brainchild of “Maisel” creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino, promotes the show’s Emmy For Your Consideration efforts but also doubles as a showcase to raise awareness and support for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, MusiCares, and Swans for Relief.
Shot in just three days, more than 60 people put this together. It opens with Ryan Farrell as Brye Adler, the host of “Miami After Dark.” Farrell filmed from his home in Brooklyn, which he redressed to match the show’s Miami aesthetic.
