Mumbai, Sep 1 (Ians) Former India cricketer and ex-head coach Ravi Shastri believes that Rohit Sharma’s team has the upper hand in the upcoming Asia Cup game against Pakistan. However, he acknowledged that Babar Azam-led side has significantly improved and has “closed the gap” with the Indian team in recent times.
India will open their campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan on Saturday in the third match of the tournament at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Sri Lanka.
Speaking to ESPNcricinfo on the eve of the match, Shastri said that India have their strongest lineup since 2011 and have an experienced captain in Rohit Sharma, which will be a massive advantage for the side.
“I would say India start as favourites. This is their strongest team since 2011, this mix of players. And a captain who is seasoned, who understands the terrain better than most.

New Delhi, Aug 23 (Ians) Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar spoke about the flexibility of the Indian line-up, saying that the whole debate will be around how India’s No. 4, 5 and 6 in batting lineup would look ahead of the upcoming Asia Cup.
Right-handed middle-order batters K L Rahul and Shreyas Iyer have been selected in India’s squad for the upcoming Asia Cup, happening from August 30 to September 17, after recovering in time from a right thigh and back injury respectively.
The availability of Iyer and Rahul, who also has a niggle to deal with which is unrelated to his original injury, had been India’s huge concerns. With the top six not having a left-handed batter, Tilak Varma, who has impressed in T20Is till now, has got a maiden call-up to the Odi squad via the six-team event, with Suryakumar Yadav retained in the 17-member squad.

New Delhi, May 5 (Ians) Former India coach Ravi Shastri believes that cricket is heading towards football’s way of functioning and warned that the players in future will be only interested in playing global events like World Cups.
“I have always said that the bilateral cricket will suffer, there is no question about that. With the leagues spreading around the world, it’s going to go the football way. The teams will assemble just before the World Cup, they play a little bit of bilateral, clubs will release the players and you play the mega World Cup. So it’s going to go that way in the long run whether you like it or not,” Shastri was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.
With recent reports saying that players are being informally approached by franchises to sign contracts where the team owners become their primary employers instead of their respective country’s governing bodies,...

Jaipur, May 5 (Ians) Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has praised Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson for his way of handling a high-quality spin troika of Ravichandran Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal and Adam Zampa in Indian Premier League (Ipl) 2023.
Rajasthan, after losing to Mumbai Indians in their last match by six wickets, will be hosting table-toppers Gujarat Titans at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium on Friday. Both teams, which faced off in Ipl 20222 final in Ahmedabad, are the front-runners in the Ipl 2023 playoffs race.
“Sanju Samson has matured as a captain. He uses his spinners very well. Only a good captain can play with three spinners and use them smartly,” Shastri was quoted as saying by Star Sports.
Shastri also backed Gujarat to be the favourites to win Ipl 2023 due to the balance the Hardik Pandya-led team has and the way it has performed collectively as a unit. Just like Rajasthan,...

New Delhi, April 30 (Ians) Chennai Super Kings host Punjab Kings at Chepauk in the day game of Ipl 2023 on Sunday. It will be the 999th game of the T20 league and the Ms Dhoni-led side will be aiming to return to winning ways after facing a big defeat in Jaipur.
Punjab Kings also suffered a big defeat against Lucknow Super Giants in a high-scoring game at home in their previous encounter on captain Shikhar Dhawan’s return.
Csk’s biggest strength this season is the way their batters are firing and the way skipper Ms Dhoni is leading them by optimising his resources to perfection.
Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar praised Dhoni for the way he’s managing his teammates, as well as himself because the knee injury seems to be pestering him constantly.
Speaking on Star Sports’ Cricket Live, Sanjay Manjrekar said, “Ms Dhoni is a clever cricketer. He knows his limitations.

New Delhi, April 12 (Ians) After Mumbai Indians’ (Mi) six-wicket win over Delhi Capitals (DC), former Indian coach Ravi Shastri said that Rohit Sharma soaked the pressure and led from the front, adding that his innings will help him maintain a positive mindset for the remaining games in the Indian Premier League (Ipl) 2023.
After disappointing innings in the first two games, skipper Rohit roared back to form with a brilliant knock of 65 off 45 as Mi won a roller-coaster game against DC off the last ball of the match on Tuesday.
“He soaked the pressure because that’s what the senior players can do. Wellington, Nov 17 (Ians) Former India head coach Ravi Shastri feels there should be no harm in India looking at the prospect of appointing a T20I captain in order to change their fortunes in playing the shortest format of the game.
Currently, Rohit Sharma is the Indian skipper across all formats. But India are being led by Hardik Pandya for the T20I series against New Zealand while Shikhar Dhawan will take over as the skipper in the Odi series against the Blackcaps as selectors decided to rest Rohit and other senior players after the end of T20 World Cup.
Pandya had first captained India in a 2-0 away series victory over Ireland June this year, after he led Gujarat Titans to Ipl 2022 title in their first appearance of the tournament. He also led India in the fifth T20I against the West Indies at Lauderhill, USA, in August, where...

Wellington, Nov 17 (Ians) In the last few years, England have transformed themselves from playing in an outdated style to becoming the dominant leaders of white-ball cricket in men’s international cricket.
That dominance was further asserted when England won the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia on November 13 at the McG and became the first men’s team to hold 20-over and 50-over World Cup trophies at the same time.
England’s template of white-ball domination is something which former India head coach Ravi Shastri wants the side to follow and use their rich talent pool as road for 2024 T20 World Cup begins with a Hardik Pandya-led side taking on New Zealand in a three-match T20I series starting from Friday at Wellington.

Chennai, Oct 7 (Ians) Former India head coach Ravi Shastri believes that despite the absence of Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja from the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia, it is an opportunity for the side to discover a ‘new champion’ player within the set-up.
With Jadeja out due to a right-knee injury which needed surgery, Axar Patel was slotted into India’s playing eleven as a like-for-like replacement. On the other hand, with Bumrah unavailable due to back injury, senior pacer Mohammed Shami could be promoted from a travelling reserve to 15th player in India’s T20 World Cup squad.

Dubai, Sep 4 (Ians) Former India head coach Ravi Shastri believes talismanic batter Virat Kohli looks a lot calmer after returning from the one-and-a-half break to return for Asia Cup 2022. Shastri added that the break taken by Kohli after India’s tour of England ended was a much-needed one.
Kohli, in a prolonged lean patch seen from him not scoring a century in international cricket since November 2019, began Asia Cup 2022 with a crucial 35 in the thrilling five-wicket win over Pakistan in India’s first Group A match. He then scored an unbeaten 59 in India’s second Group A win over Hong Kong.
“Virat Kohli looks a lot calmer, he needed that break. When you are mentally tired, you are fighting against yourself. Your body tells you something to do, your mind tells you something to do, but you can’t take it. The break could have helped him. The fact that...
