With his new show “Death by Magic,” executive producer Arthur Smith pulls off an impressive feat — expanding a television empire that is already home to some of the most enduring franchises in television.
Through his A. Smith & Co., Smith is the force behind “American Ninja Warrior” and “Hells Kitchen.” “Death By Magic,” which premiered last week on Netflix, is the most recent addition to that portfolio. Part of Netflix’s aggressive shift into the unscripted space long dominated by cable and broadcast channels, the show stars U.K. magician Drummond Money-Coutts recreating tricks that other performers dies attempting. Smith touts the “premium” feel of the final product. “There are some unbelievable illusions in the show, but the show is shot on location in South Africa and England and Detroit and London, India, Miami,” he says. “We started talking about the history of magic and we started talking about how...

Here’s a fascinating trailer for a new Netflix series called Death By Magic. The show is coming to the streaming service, and it’s described as “the most extreme magic show ever attempted.”
The show follows British magician Drummond Money-Coutts as he travels around the world recreating the stunts that have cost famous magicians their lives.
From being buried under wet concrete to escaping a collision with a speeding train, Dmc must avoid the fate that met those before him.
As a fan of magic in general, I’m sold. This kind of stuff absolutely intrigues me. Don’t worry, I seriously doubt that he’s going to die doing any of these dangerous magic tricks, otherwise Netflix wouldn’t air it!
It still looks like an intense show and we still get to watch him pull off these tricks that have killed other magicians in the past. When talking about Death By Magic,...

Mr. Money-Coutts is on a quest to recreate several infamous stunts that killed other magicians. Will these tricks kill him, too? Probably not! If so, Netflix wouldn’t be releasing this. Still, it’s […]

Usually when someone dies doing something, it’s a good idea not to try that thing. That has not stopped popular magician Dmc (nee Drummond Money-Coutts) from trying to succeed at some of his profession’s most dangerous magic tricks.
Netflix unveiled the first look at “Death by Magic,” an upcoming series in which Dmc attempts tricks that stymied magicians like Harry Houdini. Presumably he’s Ok (unless his continued social media presence is part of a very elaborate ruse), so he’s at least managed to not fall prey to his predecessor’s fate.
These attempts are updated versions of these classically perilous tricks, including spins on being buried alive and playing Russian roulette. Dmc’s pursuit takes him across a handful of different continents, looking into the cases of individual deadly magic stories. Recently, in his own words, Dmc described “Death by Magic” as “a tribute to those...

Netflix has booked “The Final Table,” a high-end cooking contest that pits 24 international star chefs against each other in creating dishes from around the world. The streaming giant has also lined up “Death by Magic,” featuring a British magician who travels the globe performing stunts that stymied – and killed – other illusionists.
Unveiling sneak peeks of both shows at the Edinburgh TV Festival on Thursday, Brandon Riegg, Netflix’s vice president of unscripted programming, said “The Final Table” was distinguished by its starry complement of competing chefs, at least half of whom have a Michelin star. “We wanted to take a bold swing and sort of show in that space only what Netflix could really do,” Riegg said. “Just having that caliber of chef is something new.”
The contestants try their hand at haute-cuisine versions of national dishes such as Spanish paella, an American Thanksgiving dinner and a traditional English breakfast.
