This article contains F9 spoilers.
After nine Fast and Furious movies—10 if you count Hobbs and Shaw—you would think the personalities and backstories of the core cast are pretty firmly set in stone. After all, we’re constantly reminded this is a family, and you always hope you know those closest to you. But even the closest knit of families can have long buried secrets, and as it turns out in F9, they’re of the darkest variety too when it comes to Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto.
From F9’s very first scene we’re told that Dom has omitted key details about his past. For instance, on the day his father died while competing in a professional stock car race, he wasn’t the only son there to watch the flames rise. Next to young Dom (played with fire by Vinnie Bennett) is also his little brother,...

Taiwanese-born American filmmaker Justin Lin has directed five of the nine films in The Fast Saga already, including its lowest of lows (2009's Fast & Furious) and its highest of highs (2011's Fast Five). With Fast 9, known as just F9 or Fast & Furious 9, the auteur of automotive action returns to the franchise for the first time since 2013's Fast & Furious 6 for what is, arguably, the most ridiculous entry in a series that routinely pushes the limits of logic, physics, and heavy-handed family melodrama. Co-written by Lin and franchise newcomer Daniel Casey, F9 begins in 1989, with professional stock car driver Jack Toretto (J.D. Pardo) burnin' up the track at a speedway, his sons Dominic (Vinnie Bennett) and Jakob (Finn Cole) in his crew. During the race, a rival (Jim Parrack) smashes into Jack's bumper, causing the stock car to hit ...

I’ve enjoyed most of the first eight Fast And Furious films. That made this ninth installment, F9, all the more disappointing. Granted, the whole premise of this handful of outside-the-law car nuts evolving from petty crooks and party animals to international espionage super studs, while still being societal outcasts, requires a hefty suspension of the ol’ disbelief. This chapter raises that particular ante beyond acceptable levels.
First of all, we learn how Dominic Toretto’s (Vin Diesel) father died. We also discover that he has a brother (John Cena) who’s never been mentioned in the first eight films, despite all of Dom’s blather about the “importance of family”, including significant roles in the early films for his sister...

Super-charge your engines – the ninth instalment of the frenetic Fast & Furious franchise is finally hitting cinemas, following a pandemic-related delay to its original release date. One-upmanship is the name of the game in the Fast & Furious franchise, from its humble carjacking beginnings to its globe-trotting (now globe-circling) feats of saving the world from the MacGuffin du jour. While its plotting implausibilities and character invincibility have always been part of the joke—never more so with its latest entry—each iteration has methodically upped the ante to some ridiculous next stage. Franchise veteran Justin Lin’s F9 follows suit, yet the prior film’s creakiness becomes expounded here. This is an adventure grasping at straws at every turn—stuck between fulfilling its grounded ideas and striving for franchise-topping action, everything feels like it’s running on fumes.
Series newcomer John Cena (seemingly filling the pro-wrestler-turned-actor slot) plays Jakob Toretto, brother to Vin Diesel’s Dom Toretto, who is apparently estranged enough that he hasn’t been mentioned once over 20 years. No matter: the relationship is...

It leaked out a while back that the new “Fast and Furious” film, “F9,” would feature a sequence set in space — a setting that sounded, on paper, like it might be the logical culmination of all those spectacular gravity-defying leaps that the cars in this series are perpetually making. Yet I’m not sure if anyone will be prepared for what happens at the climax of “F9.”
Roman (Tyrese Gibson) and Tej (Chris “Ludacris” Bridges), who’ve been quibbling all through the movie, are behind the wheel of a red Pontiac Fiero that’s been outfitted with a rocket launcher. The car is hitched to the back of a space shuttle, which is preparing to send them into orbit; as they fumble around with makeshift yellow space helmets that look like they belong on a pair of 1960s aquanauts (all that’s missing is the rear-projection fakery), the sequence turns into pure cheeseball comedy.

Following a seven-year hiatus, director and all-around franchise mainstay Justin Lin has returned to Fast & Furious for what he describes as “the most ambitious” entry in Universal’s gear-grinding series.
That’s quite the declaration, given next summer sees the release of Fast & Furious 9. Nine movies! And that’s not even counting the recently-released Hobbs & Shaw spinoff.
But for all of the weight that the Fast & Furious brand carries, Justin Lin has clearly emerged from production with a smile on his face, taking to Twitter to announce that filming on Fast & Furious 9 has now wrapped ahead of its primetime launch in May of 2020. Oh, and he even went so far as to say that this is “by far the most ambitious film of the series,” before thanking his global crew for their tireless work across London, Edinburgh, Phuket, Krabi, Tbilisi, Los Angeles… and space?

Exclusive: Freeform has passed on its drama pilot Breckman Rodeo, from writer Steve Lerner, The Americans executive producers/showrunners Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields, and new Freeform corporate sibling FX Productions.
Breckman Rodeo, starring Jess Gabor and Noah Le Gros, was one of three hourlong pilots at Freeform, along with Party of Five and Motherland, all of which had been garnering solid buzz. The Party of Five reboot was the first of the bunch to score a series pickup in February, followed by the witches-themed Motherland: Fort Salem, which was picked up to series in March, leaving Breckman Rodeo as the only outstanding pilot.
The decision to not go forward with it comes a couple of weeks after Lauren Corrao joined Freeform as new head of original programming.
Created and written by Lerner and directed by Wendey Stanzler, Breckman Rodeo was an ensemble drama about a group of young rodeo riders in Cheyenne,...

Following Wednesday night’s “Riverdale” episode, ‘The Midnight Club” — in which fans were transported back to the 1990s for a homage to the 1985 John Hughes flick “The Breakfast Club” — star Camila Mendes says she has another idea for a special episode.
“I would love to do a ’40s episode,” Mendes told TheWrap in an interview on Thursday. “A very comic book original. Archie, Betty, Veronica. [A] slap stick, comic-book-feel episode. That would be fun.”
Seeing as Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s CW series is actually based on the comic book series starring Archie Andrews, Jughead Jones, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, Reggie Mantle, the serpents, Josie and the Pussycats (and Sabrina Spellman), that sounds like the perfect idea for the next tribute installment.

Fast & Furious 9, planned as the penultimate film in the main series, puts the pedal to the metal this May.
The Fast and the Furious franchise remains profitable and shows no signs of pumping the brakes, despite claims of hanging up the monkey wrenches on the mainline series after the 10th installment. Not only did its first spinoff film, the Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham two-hander with a daisy of a title, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, successfully expand its territory of bankability, but plans are in the works for a female-fronted spinoff movie and even an animated Netflix series. Of course, lest we forget, there’s two more films from the main series set to arrive, with our focus here being on this May's penultimate offering, 9.
Indeed, 2017’s The Fate of the Furious, was, according to Vin Diesel, the kickoff for a trilogy of...
