Nicholas Galitzine and Tony Curran flirt in French in the TV Insider clip above, and it’s done behind the king’s lover, the Earl of Somerset’s, back — literally. George is trekking through the English countryside on horseback with all the king’s men in the clip from the upcoming episode, airing Friday, April 12 at 9/8c on Starz. They’re hunting for game, but George is hunting for James’ attention. “Can you hunt as well as you dance?” James asks. “Not even close,” George replies in French. Impressed, the Scottish monarch says he tried to teach the romantic language to his lover, the Earl (Laurie Davidson), “but he’s much more stone than sponge.” “I’m all sponge, your majesty,” George replies, shamelessly flirting. James loves it.

Early in Mary & George, George Villiers (Nicholas Galitzine) halfheartedly attempts suicide in protest of his family’s refusal to let him marry the lowborn Jenny (Emily Fairn), despite his insistences that she’s no mere servant girl “in my heart.” When his mother, Mary (Julianne Moore), finds him, however, she reacts not with worry, but annoyance. “That’s not how it works. That’s not how a single thing fucking works,” she snaps. “Are you five?”

Seven Kings Must Die concludes the story of Uhtred Ragnarsson, a decades-long frenemy of the English crown since the days of King Alfred the Great. It’s largely adapted from Bernard Cornwell’s final instalment in his Saxon Stories books, War Lord, along with elements of the two previous novels, and tracks the contested succession to the royal throne following the death of King Edward.
A significant time jump has taken place since the final moments of The Last Kingdom season five, during which Aelswith, Hild and Eadith have all passed or moved away. A core of male characters remains though, including Uhtred, Finan, Sihtric, Father Pyrlig and Aldhelm. They’re joined by brand new characters, as below.
Laurie Davidson as Ingilmundr
The biggest addition to The Last Kingdom’s regular cast is Aethelstan’s new trusted advisor, Ingilmundr, a Danish-born Christian who shows a powerful influence over King Edward’s successor.

There’s a ton of plot packed into this standalone movie derived from the TV series, but the deluge of detail gets steadily more absorbing
Here is a standalone feature film and final capstone in Netflix’s British-made TV series The Last Kingdom, an epic in every sense of the word that’s based on novels by Bernard Cornwell and unfolds in the 10th century, just before the Norman invasion. Even if you’ve never seen a single episode from any of the show’s previous five seasons of dramatised yet highly researched British history, you’ll probably quite like to go back and start watching the whole saga from the beginning because it gets more gripping the more you surrender to it. This is largely down to the thoughtful way it tries to present a society composed of pagan Danes and Christian Saxons – and folks who are a bit...

Set mostly in England, back before it was officially called England — and centuries before Great Britain was so much as a glint in the eye of James I — director Ed Bazalgette’s workmanlike historical epic “The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die” wraps up the events of “The Last Kingdom,” the Netfix drama series based on Bernard Cornwell’s “Saxon Tales” novels. Playing like “Game of Thrones” with more history and fewer dragons, the film opens with several smaller kingdoms, including Northumbria, Mercia and East Anglia, gearing up for a power struggle exacerbated by the recent death of Alfred the Great, king of Wessex, and worsened by the surreptitious attempts of the Danes to sow discord.

The Last Kingdom TV series (2015 – 2022) was a pretty glorious adaptation of Bernard Cornwell’s Saxon Stories. Like the books, it played merry hell with historical fact, but won fans over with action and heart. The tale of Saxon-born, Danish-raised warrior Uhtred Ragnarsson pinballing between enmity and mentorship with Saxon kings as he sought to reclaim his familial lands struck the right note between sincerity, humour and bloody action.
Over five seasons, the show covered the first ten of Cornwell’s novels before ending, which left three books unadapted. Enter: Netflix movie Seven Kings Must Die to wrap things up. We join Uhtred several years after his return to Bebbanburg, when Edward the Elder’s succession is being contested by sons Aelfweard and Aethelstan, and Danish invader Anlaf is making dangerous alliances in the north. Immediately, we’re back in the thick of it: ungrateful Saxon kings, scheming traitors and more...

Matthew Modine is pulling off a college admissions scandal in a new trailer for the Netflix documentary Operation Varity Blues (premiering Wednesday, March 17).
The Stranger Things actor plays Rick Singer, the man behind the scheme, in the doc, which uses an “innovative combination of interviews and narrative recreations of the FBI’s wiretapped conversations between Singer and his clients,” per the official synopsis. “Operation Varsity Blues offers a rare glimpse into the enigmatic figure behind a scheme that exposed the lengths wealthy families would go to for admission into elite colleges, and angered a nation already grappling with the effects of widespread inequality.

Judi Dench as Old Deuteronomy in “Cats,” co-written and directed by Tom Hooper.
Having seen the trailer for Cats, I must admit I approached the film with some trepidation. The highly-touted CGI effects to make humans catlike actually looked unsettling rather than magical. The good news is the effect is much less disturbing in the film itself. With music by Andrew Lloyd Weber, Cats is one of the longest-running musicals of all time, so has plenty of fans.
The musical debuted in London in 1988 and it is credited with starting the “mega-musical” craze. Along with innovative staging, it featured groundbreaking costumes, makeup, and choreography that turned dancers and singers into cat-like humans, much to the delight of audience, spawning a host of similar effects in stage shows. While I’m not personal a fan of musicals myself but I did enjoy T.S. Eliot’s classic funny quirky book of poems,...
