If the measure of a good documentary about a superstar athlete is in synthesizing what makes its subject tick, “Stephen Curry: Underrated” gets passing grades. And that’s no small compliment, considering the movie spends most of its time at school, a familiar place for director Peter Nicks, whose previous doc, “Homeroom,” served up a very different look at education. With enough fresh stories to keep basketball fanatics engaged and a coda that every soccer mom will appreciate, this is a film that’s worthy of its subject.
Produced in part by Curry’s Unanimous Media, “Underrated” leans on abundant clips of the hoop star’s career and interviews with family, coaches and college teammates, as well as fly-on-the-wall moments that come with the kind of access filmmakers get when the subject helps to drive the project. Nicks casts Curry as an undersized underdog-turned-college phenom who becomes a four-time NBA...

“Far below NBA standard in regard to explosiveness and athleticism… at 6-2, he’s extremely small for the NBA shooting guard position… Needs to add some muscles to his upper body, but appears as though he’ll always be skinny.”

Stephen Curry had some epic support for his 2022 Espy Awards hosting gig. The Golden State Warriors athlete's family, including his wife, chef Ayesha Curry, and their older children - daughters Riley, 10, and Ryan, 7 - were all on hand at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on July 20.
Ayesha and Stephen's youngest child, son Canon, 4, didn't walk the red carpet with his parents and siblings. But grandma and grandpa Curry were there: Stephen's parents, Sonya and Dell Curry, were pictured in attendance.
Stephen - who is also up for several awards during the 2022 ceremony - told The Hollywood Reporter ahead of the big night that he texted a few former hosts before agreeing to the emcee gig, including Drake and Peyton Manning. Said Stephen, "I just wanted to make sure that it wasn't a 'Hell no, don't do it,' situation. And I didn't get that from either [Drake or Manning]. It was all...

A24 has greenlighted Underrated, a documentary about Golden State Warriors All-Star Stephen Curry and his rise to prominence in college, where he first became a national figure guiding underdog Davidson to the Elite 8 in the 2007-08 NCAA Tournament.
The film will be produced by Ryan Coogler and Pete Nicks for Proximity Media. Nicks will direct the pic. Curry and Erick Peyton will also produce via Unanimous Media, which has a development deal with A24.
A24, which launched its documentary roster at this year’s Cannes Film Festival with the Val Kilmer doc Val, will produce and finance Underrated. It marks the first project in its deal with Unanimous, which is focused on documentaries.
Curry, the son of former NBAer Dell Curry, was just a sophomore when he led Davidson on its NCAA run. He returned for his junior year and became a consensus All-American.
