‘Barbie’ Struts To No. 2 In Deadline’s 2023 Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament
Image
Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament is back. While studios during Covid wildly embraced the theatrical day-and-date model when cinemas were closed, they soon realized there’s nothing more profitable than a theatrical release and the downstreams that come with it. If anything, theatrical is the advertisement for a movie’s longevity in subsequent home entertainment windows. Entering the conversation in 2023 were the streamers, such as Apple, who have also realized the necessity of theatrical to eventize their movies. The financial data pulled together here for Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament is culled by seasoned and trusted sources.

Barbie: Why Amy Schumer Left the Project
Image
It is no secret that women are treated differently than men in Hollywood. From actresses having to put up with questions about calorie intake and workout routines to leading women negotiating their salaries to match their male co-star's paychecks, many women still feel like the industry does not treat them as professionals. In 2017, Amy Schumer was one of many actresses in the industry that felt like her voice was not being heard, and that led to her walking away from the lead role in the live-action Barbie film.

Update August 7, 2023: This article has been updated following the release of Barbie, and the movie crossing a major box office milestone.

Instead of wearing hot pink heels and riding around Barbieland in a pink convertible, Schumer chose to pursue roles that allowed her to have a voice and represent women the way she wanted. She has come a long way since...

How ‘Barbie’ Went Outside The Box On Her Long Journey To Become A Blockbuster: Global Opening Now At $356M – Box Office
Image
When it comes to the road to blockbuster glory, some projects are willed, some happen instantaneously, while others go through a long development hell. That’s just what happens when you’re working toward what’s hopefully a billion-grossing title.

In the case of Mattel’s Barbie, it was a 14-year journey that began at Universal. It stands to reason that the toy company would be fiercely protective about a feature take on its 64-year-old doll that generates a reported $3 billion annually in revenue. The product first conceived as America’s Sweetheart has evolved with changing times, switching up her stereotypes and outfits from prom queen to flight attendant to Mad Men secretary to astronaut. A doll that was deemed iconic in the 1970s-era of pinups like Loni Anderson and Farrah Fawcett endured a backlash when critics deemed her an inappropriate role model for young girls. This, despite Mattel pushing...

Amy Schumer Reveals How She Felt After Seeing ‘Barbie’
Image
Amy Schumer, like many moviegoers, took part in the Barbenheimer phenomenon and has seen both Barbie and Oppenheimer, the two movies currently lighting up the box office.

Schumer, in an Instagram post Monday, wrote that she “really enjoyed” both films, but she joked that she thinks she should’ve played Emily Blunt’s role in Oppenheimer. Blunt plays Kitty, the wife of Cillian Murphy’s J. Robert Oppenheimer.

“Do better Hollywood,” she jokingly captioned the image of her offering a stern look over a pair of sunglasses, while wearing a hat.

While Schumer doesn’t appear to have ever been attached to the star-studded Oppenheimer cast, which also includes Matt Damon, Florence Pugh and Robert Downey Jr., she was involved in an earlier iteration of the Barbie movie.

The comedian was tapped to star as the titular doll in a live-action movie then set up at Sony in 2016, with Schumer...

‘Barbie’ Had a Long Hard Road to the Big Screen
Image
Barbie is looking like a box office beauty, racking up the strongest preview night numbers of the year and heading for a weekend gross that could top $100 million — that could buy Warner Bros. a whole lot of dream houses.

But the Mattel icon’s pink Corvette took a very long road to the big screen, and before writer-director Greta Gerwig, writer Noah Baumbach and star Margot Robbie, there were other top creatives attached to the on-again, off-again project.

Below is a brief history of Barbie’s journey from one of the most popular toys in the world to theaters:

1959. The Barbie fashion doll, created by Ruth Handler, is launched.

Literally 50 years pass.

2009: Mattel, the makers of Barbie, sign a deal with Universal Pictures to make a film about the iconic doll. That deal fell through.

2014: Sony acquired the rights to Barbie. The project saw a series of writers...

Diablo Cody explains why she ‘sh-t the bed’ with her ‘Barbie’ script
Image
Honest to blog, there’s a universe where Diablo Cody wrote a script for “Barbie.”

Long before Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” was even thought possible, Cody was hired to rewrite a potential Barbie movie for Sony. “Diablo’s unconventionality is just what Barbie needs,” producer Walter Parkes said in 2015. “It signals we’re going for a legitimately contemporary tone. We’re bringing her on because she had great ideas, but even more importantly, she truly loves Barbie.”

But it didn’t take long for Cody, an Oscar winner for “Juno,” to exit the project. Later that same year, the trades reported Sony had brought together three writers, including Hilary Winston, to work on separate drafts of the Barbie film. It was Winston’s work that apparently attracted Amy Schumer to star, although when her casting was announced in 2016, it was revealed Schumer and her sister Kim Caramele planned on doing...

Amy Schumer Reveals The Real Reason She Dropped Out Of The Barbie Movie
Image
After having previously been in talks to star in and rewrite the long-gestating project, Amy Schumer has revealed the real reason she dropped out of the Barbie movie. Produced by and starring Margot Robbie, the adaptation of the Mattel doll will see the real Barbie kicked out of Barbieland due to having an existential crisis, with Ryan Gosling's Ken joining her for her search for true happiness. Co-written and directed by three-time Oscar nominee Greta Gerwig, Barbie is gearing up to make a splash in theaters this summer, going up against Oppenheimer at the box office.

During a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Amy Schumer was asked about her departure from the long-in-development Barbie movie. The comedian revealed that, though it was reported she dropped out due to scheduling conflicts, she exited over creative differences on the project, namely that it "didn't feel feminist and cool" enough.

Amy Schumer Left the Barbie Movie Because It Didn’t ‘Feel Feminist and Cool,’ Cites ‘Creative Differences’
Amy Schumer in Inside Amy Schumer (2013)
Amy Schumer has revealed the real reason why she left the Barbie movie – and it’s not what they told us at the time. While playing Plead the Fifth on “Watch What Happens Live,” the comedian admitted that she didn’t drop out due to scheduling conflicts, but creative differences.

“I think it was scheduling conflicts,” Schumer said. “That’s what we said. But, yeah, it really was creative differences. But you know what? There’s a new team behind it, and it looks like it’s very feminist and cool.”

When host Andy Cohen pressed her, asking if the project didn’t feel “feminist and cool” when she was involved in it, Schumer confirmed that was the case.

Amy Schumer Explains Barbie Movie Exit
Image
The upcoming Barbie movie would certainly be a lot different if the previous plan for the feature film had worked out. Before Greta Gerwig boarded Mattel's Barbie movie, various screenplays had been considered, and at one point, it was reported that Amy Schumer would be starring in a live-action Barbie film from Sony. That version of the project would have also had Schumer and her sister, Kim Caramele, adding rewrites to a draft originally penned by Hillary Winston.

Months after joining the project, Schumer would reveal in 2017 that she was no longer involved, claiming at the time to have left over "scheduling conflicts." There were tentative plans to bring in Anne Hathaway for the role, but Sony's rights to Barbie would expire in 2018, allowing Warner Bros. to swoop them up. That came with a complete revamp of the Barbie movie plans, resulting in Gerwig coming in to write a...

Amy Schumer Dropped Out of ‘Barbie’ Because Original Version Wasn’t ‘Feminist and Cool’ Enough
Image
We almost got a very different version of Barbie than Greta Gerwig’s sugar-sweet spectacle of Margot Robbie’s Barbie and Ryan Gosling’s Ken that will hit theaters on July 21. For one, Amy Schumer was almost the actress who would have brought the doll to life on-screen, and Hilary Winston was leading the screenplay, rather than Noah Baumbach and Gerwig, who stepped in when that initial version was scrapped. From Schumer’s perspective, that was all for the best — the original just wasn’t “feminist and cool” enough.

Amy Schumer Dropped Out of ‘Barbie’ Because Original Script Wasn’t ‘Feminist and Cool’ Enough: ‘There’s a New Team Behind It’ Now
Image
Long before Margot Robbie boarded the “Barbie” movie and got Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach to write the screenplay, it was Amy Schumer who was set to headline the project. Back in 2016, Sony Pictures had the rights to “Barbie” and cast Schumer to star in a movie based on an original idea and screenplay by Hilary Winston. Schumer and her sister, Kim Caramele, planned rewrites, but the comedian exited the movie less than a year later.

“Sadly, I’m no longer able to commit to Barbie due to scheduling conflicts,” the actor said in a statement to Variety at the time. “The film has so much promise, and Sony and Mattel have been great partners. I’m bummed, but look forward to seeing Barbie on the big screen.”

It turns out “scheduling conflicts” was just a cover. During a new interview on “Watch What Happens Live,” Schumer admitted that it...

Amy Schumer Will See New ‘Barbie’ Despite Leaving Original Sony Movie Over ‘Creative Differences’
Image
Amy Schumer is revealing that all was not perfect in Barbieland back in 2016.

Schumer, who was originally attached to star in and co-write the live-action Barbie adaptation, said she will be seeing the “Barbie” movie starring Margot Robbie and directed by Greta Gerwig. However, Schumer said the original Sony film lacked a “feminist” take on the character like Gerwig’s film for Warner Bros. clearly does.

“I can’t wait to see the movie, it looks awesome,” Schumer said on “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen,” adding, “I think we said it was scheduling conflicts, that’s what we said. But yeah, it really was just creative differences.”

Schumer continued, “But you know, there’s a new team behind it, and it looks like it’s very feminist and cool so I will be seeing the movie.”

Amy Schumer Opens Up About ‘Barbie’ Creative Split: Studio ‘Didn’t Want to Do It the Way I Wanted’
Image
Amy Schumer is revealing why she decided to leave Barbieland for good.

The “Life & Beth” star spoke out about parting ways with the “Barbie” live-action film adaptation during a cover story interview with The Hollywood Reporter. When Schumer left the project, the reason cited was “scheduling conflicts” with her 2018 film “I Feel Pretty.” Now, Schumer is clarifying what really happened.

“They definitely didn’t want to do it the way I wanted to do it, the only way I was interested in doing it,” the 2022 Oscar co-host said.

Turns out that the studio (then Sony) and Schumer just didn’t see eye to eye. Per the THR interview, Schumer and sister and writing partner Kim Caramele wrote Barbie as an “ambitious inventor,” while the studio asked that her invention be a high heel made out of Jell-o. Schumer also said that she was sent a pair of Manolo Blahniks to celebrate the film deal.

Greta Gerwig will direct the “Barbie” movie starring Margot Robbie, in addition to writing the screenplay along with her partner Noah Baumbach, an individual with knowledge told TheWrap.

Though Gerwig became attached to “Barbie” in 2019, Robbie revealed in a new interview with British Vogue that Gerwig would also be stepping into the director’s chair on the film.

In discussing the film with British Vogue, Robbie said that playing Barbie comes with “a lot of baggage” and a lot of “nostalgic connections,” but it’s not quite the movie you’re expecting.

Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach to Reunite For ‘Barbie’ Film Starring Margot Robbie
Greta Gerwig at an event for I 90° Academy Awards (2018)
After cycling through a number of different iterations over the years, including attached and rumored stars like Amy Schumer and Anne Hathaway and filmmakers like Alethea Jones, the long-gestasting “Barbie” movie is going in a decidedly different direction. Variety reports that Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach have signed on to co-write the film, indicating that the feature film about the world’s most famous doll will likely have plenty in common with their previous features like “Mistress America” and “Frances Ha.”

Gerwig, who is currently editing her much-anticipated “Little Women” adaptation for a Christmas release, is also being “eyed” to direct the film for Warner Bros. Baumbach is also preparing for his next release, an untitled marital drama starring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson that Netflix will release in the fall.

The duo’s screenwriting deal is apparently done, though Gerwig’s directing attachment has “not yet closed.”

The film will star Margot Robbie,...

Margot Robbie in Talks to Star in Barbie Movie At Warner Bros
Margot Robbie
Margot Robbie is in talks to star in a Barbie movie that is moving from Sony to Warner Bros., an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.

Robbie will also produce alongside Mattel president Robbie Brenner. In 2014, it was announced Mattel would be partnering with Sony for a movie based on the popular doll, and at one point, Amy Schumer was attached to star. Schumer later dropped out due to scheduling conflicts, and Anne Hathaway was set to step in.

The release date then moved from August 8 this year to May 8, 2020. The rights then went back to Mattel earlier this year.

‘Barbie’ Zooming From Sony To Warner Bros; Margot Robbie In Early Talks
This is very early, but we’re hearing that Barbie, after going around in circles in development at Sony, is heading over to Warner Bros with Margot Robbie potentially headlining. Robbie is not signed as of yet. There was a rumor that Patty Jenkins was circling, but we just learned that is no longer true.

After being in development at Sony for quite some time — the latest iteration being with director Alethea Jones and a revised script from Olivia Milch — Barbie‘s option expired. Anne Hathaway departed from the project earlier in the year after a version starring Amy Schumer, penned by her sister Kim Caramele, didn’t come together due to Shumer’s schedule.

Barbie is a serious $3 billion brand that helped build Mattel, which just announced Robbie Brenner as the head of its film division. They are protective of Barbie and have always wanted the best live-action version on screen.

“Snatched” teams Goldie Hawn and Amy Schumer in a comedic adventure
Ever since the release of Trainwreck established Amy Schumer as a big screen comedy star, it has been a waiting game to find out how she would fair as an A list leading lady, following that hit. Schumer has already conquered the small screen with Inside Amy Schumer, but now she tries cinemas again with Snatched. It’s out today and represents the best option in theaters this week. Keep in mind, it’s not amazing, but it’s solidly entertaining and more than amusing enough to recommend. Plus, Schumer has gotten Goldie Hawn back on screens, which is an absolute delight. If you’re a fan of either, you should be in for a treat. The film is an action comedy that wants to be as much an adventure as it is a laugh riot. Emily Middleton (Schumer) is the complete opposite of her mother Linda Middleton (Hawn). In...

‘Barbie’ Needs Lead Actress, Director & Has To Start Shooting This Summer Because Of Toys
We knew that “Barbie” was never about presenting premium cinema, but the hope was that with the involvement of Amy Schumer as lead actress and even polishing the script by Hilary Winston (“The Lego Ninjago Movie,” “My Name Is Earl“) and Kim Caramele (who has worked with Schumer, as a producer on “Trainwreck,” and producer/writer on “Inside Amy Schumer“), the movie would at least be somewhat more than an extended commercial for a doll.
