Move over Tony Soprano — there’s a new crime boss in town, and she’s wearing heels.

Poorna Jagannathan is shaking up the crime-comedy genre in Hulu’s newest series Deli Boys, where she stars as the fierce and unforgettable Lucky Auntie — a role she calls “a mix of Tony Soprano and The Real Housewives of Orange County.”

Originally written for a man, Lucky Auntie was reimagined as a woman thanks to a bit of Hollywood inspiration. At Deadline’s Contenders TV event, Poorna revealed that creator Abdullah Saeed changed course after attending a talk by Geena Davis.

Poorna Jagannathan plays crime boss Lucky Auntie in the Hulu comedy series Deli Boys — a mix of Tony Soprano and The Real Housewives of Orange County, as Jagannathan describes her — a role that typically is written for a male to portray.

At Deadline’s Contenders TV event on Sunday afternoon, she revealed that series creator Abdullah Saeed had written her character as a male but was encouraged to go in a different direction thanks to some encouragement from Geena Davis.

“Lucky Auntie was written as a guy, as was another character called Agent Mercer,” shared Jagannathan. “Abdullah, the writer, went to a Geena Davis talk, and she basically was like, ‘Look at your script — if you could turn two men into women and it works, do it.’ So that night, he went back, and it became Lucky Auntie instead of Lucky Uncle, and Agent Mercer became a woman as well.

What does a casting director do? It’s one of the most important roles on any film or TV production, but there are a lot of misconceptions about the job. At IndieWire and Disney’s Pass the Remote panel on April 1 — a giddy TV FYC event that put top casting directors Tiffany Little Canfield, Josh Einsohn, Wendy O’Brien, Danielle Aufiero, Seth Yanklewitz, and Julie Ashton in front of a packed theater at Vidiots in Los Angeles — Yanklewitz said some people even think he and his peers are inherently “mean.”

“There are so many misconceptions,” said Yanklewitz about the business of casting. An industry veteran with credits on “New Girl,” “Black Hawk Down,” and more, Yanklewitz recently cast Hulu’s hit crime comedy “Deli Boys” for Pakistani-American creator Abdullah Saeed. Yanklewitz explained how a crash course in South Asian history helped make the casting process both more authentic and more inventive.

In a television landscape saturated with South Asian tropes — think: dutiful doctor, tech nerd, spiritual guru, bearded terrorist — Hulu’s Deli Boys arrives like a shot of spice-infused adrenaline. Konner read the sample that became “Deli Boys” before the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, and had her first meeting with creator Abdullah Saeed during the early days of lockdown. “He had such a hilarious, original voice, nothing like I’ve seen,” Konner said. “It’s a similar way I felt when I met Lena [Dunham], which was just no one’s talking like this. No one [making] something like this.”

Tan France has joined the the cast of Hulu’s upcoming comedy series “Deli Boys” as a guest star.

In his first-ever scripted television role, he will play Zubair, a British Pakistani South London gang leader who is described as “smart, intimidating and dressed to kill.”

Exclusive: Michelle Nader has been tapped as executive producer and showrunner on the upcoming ABC multi-camera comedy series Shifting Gears (working title), starring Tim Allen and Kat Dennings. It is the first project under an overall deal the veteran writer-producer has signed with the studio behind Shifting Gears, 20th Television, a part of Disney Television Studios, to write, develop and produce comedy, drama and limited series for linear networks and streamers, with an emphasis on platforms across Disney Entertainment Television.

Nader succeeds Mike Scully and Julie Thacker Scully who served as writers, executive producers on the Shifting Gears pilot but exited before the project was picked up to series. Hollywood is reeling from the death of Al S. Ruddy, the Oscar-winning producer of such iconic films as The Godfather and Million Dollar Baby. Ruddy passed on May 25 at UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center after a brief illness. The multi-hyphenate filmmaker was 94.

“Al was truly one of the great Hollywood mavericks,” The Offer director Dexter Fletcher said in a statement. “One of the last Mohicans who created great movies which still influence and inspire to this day. From humble beginnings to the highest of Hollywood accolades. His was an incredible journey. Achieved through the sheer power of his determination, strong will, irrepressible energy and charm and a rarely matched love for the art of film.”

Fletcher’s Paramount+ miniseries The Offer chronicles the making of Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather. It stars Miles Teller as Ruddy and immortalizes the visionary producer’s meticulous work on the 1972 classic.

Al Ruddy, two-time Oscar winner for producing “The Godfather” and “Million Dollar Baby,” died May 25 at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. Ruddy was also co-creator of “Hogan’s Heroes” and of “Walker, Texas Ranger.” He was 94.

After the success of sitcom “Hogan’s Heroes,” Ruddy went on to produce “Little Fauss and Big Halsy” and “Making It” before coming on to Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather,” which was nominated for 11 Academy Awards.

In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Gilroy responded to criticism he received from a fellow WGA member for continuing to perform non-writing duties on Disney+'s Andor during the strike. Gilroy says he has not been on the Star Wars show's set since the strike began on May 2. "I discontinued all writing and writing-related work on Andor prior to midnight, May 1," Gilroy's statement reads. "After being briefed on the Saturday showrunner meeting, I informed Chris Keyser at the WGA on Sunday morning that I would also be ceasing all non-writing producing functions." Keyser confirmed to THR that said conversation indeed took place. Meanwhile, Lucasfilm -- Andor's production company -- declined to comment on the matter.
