Poorna Jagannathan is a Scene-Stealing ‘Gangster Auntie’ in Hulu’s Deli Boys
Image
Move over Tony Soprano — there’s a new crime boss in town, and she’s wearing heels.

Poorna Jagannathan is shaking up the crime-comedy genre in Hulu’s newest series Deli Boys, where she stars as the fierce and unforgettable Lucky Auntie — a role she calls “a mix of Tony Soprano and The Real Housewives of Orange County.”

Originally written for a man, Lucky Auntie was reimagined as a woman thanks to a bit of Hollywood inspiration. At Deadline’s Contenders TV event, Poorna revealed that creator Abdullah Saeed changed course after attending a talk by Geena Davis.

“Lucky Auntie was written as a guy, as was another character called Agent Mercer,” Poorna shared. “Abdullah, the writer, went to a Geena Davis talk, and she basically was like, ‘Look at your script — if you could turn two men into women and it works, do it.’ So that night, he went back,...

‘Deli Boys’ Star Poorna Jagannathan Reveals Her Crime Boss Auntie Character Originally Was Written As A Male – Contenders TV
Image
Poorna Jagannathan plays crime boss Lucky Auntie in the Hulu comedy series Deli Boys — a mix of Tony Soprano and The Real Housewives of Orange County, as Jagannathan describes her — a role that typically is written for a male to portray.

At Deadline’s Contenders TV event on Sunday afternoon, she revealed that series creator Abdullah Saeed had written her character as a male but was encouraged to go in a different direction thanks to some encouragement from Geena Davis.

“Lucky Auntie was written as a guy, as was another character called Agent Mercer,” shared Jagannathan. “Abdullah, the writer, went to a Geena Davis talk, and she basically was like, ‘Look at your script — if you could turn two men into women and it works, do it.’ So that night, he went back, and it became Lucky Auntie instead of Lucky Uncle, and Agent Mercer became a woman as well.

Watch Disney Casting Directors Explain How They Chose Their Actors for ‘Only Murders,’ ‘Deli Boys,’ ‘Paradise,’ ‘Abbott Elementary,’ and More
Image
What does a casting director do? It’s one of the most important roles on any film or TV production, but there are a lot of misconceptions about the job. At IndieWire and Disney’s Pass the Remote panel on April 1 — a giddy TV FYC event that put top casting directors Tiffany Little Canfield, Josh Einsohn, Wendy O’Brien, Danielle Aufiero, Seth Yanklewitz, and Julie Ashton in front of a packed theater at Vidiots in Los Angeles — Yanklewitz said some people even think he and his peers are inherently “mean.”

“There are so many misconceptions,” said Yanklewitz about the business of casting. An industry veteran with credits on “New Girl,” “Black Hawk Down,” and more, Yanklewitz recently cast Hulu’s hit crime comedy “Deli Boys” for Pakistani-American creator Abdullah Saeed. Yanklewitz explained how a crash course in South Asian history helped make the casting process both more authentic and more inventive.

Deli Boys Season 2 Gets Encouraging Response From EP
Image
Deli Boys season 2 gets an encouraging update from executive producer Jenni Konner. Created by Abdullah Saeed, the story centers on two Pakistani-American brothers after the death of their father and the unveiling of his criminal enterprise. The ten-episode comedy recently premiered on Hulu to positive reviews, dropping all of its episodes in a binge-release model. The cast of Deli Boys includes Asif Ali, Saagar Shaikh, Poorna Jagannathan, Alfie Fuller, and Brian George.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Konner was asked about whether there are plans for Deli Boys season 2. Although the executive producer noted that it is too early to say and that there wasn't a “huge mega-plan” for what could come next, she did note that the first installment ends on a cliffhanger. In the quote below, Konner encouragingly mentions there are some ideas the writers’ room might turn to if the crime comedy is renewed:

Jenni Konner on the Five-Year Journey to ‘Deli Boys’ and Its ‘Magical’ End Result
Image
When asked about the four-year journey to bringing “Deli Boys” to Hulu, executive producer Jenni Konner is quick to fact-check. “I don’t know who told you four, because it’s five,” she told IndieWire.

Konner read the sample that became “Deli Boys” before the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, and had her first meeting with creator Abdullah Saeed during the early days of lockdown. “He had such a hilarious, original voice, nothing like I’ve seen,” Konner said. “It’s a similar way I felt when I met Lena [Dunham], which was just no one’s talking like this. No one [making] something like this.”

“Deli Boys” tells the story of brothers Raj (Saagar Shaikh) and Mir (Asif Ali), whose world is turned upside down after their father dies and turns out to be a Philadelphia drug lord. His corporate DarCo empire is dismantled, leaving the boys in charge of a...

‘Deli Boys’ Stars Asif Ali, Saagar Shaikh Always Audition for the Same Parts: Usually, ‘There’s Only One Brown Character’
Image
Asif Ali and Saagar Shaikh play brothers in the Onyx Collective comedy series “Deli Boys,” much to Shaikh’s relief. Speaking with Variety, Shaikh noted that he often found himself losing roles to Ali over the years given the lack of opportunities for South Asian actors in Hollywood.

“Usually when I audition for something, they there’s only one brown character,” Shaikh said. When Shaikh became aware of the “Deli Boys” pilot script, he auditioned for the role of Mir Dar. But then his reps broke some familiar news.

“I was waiting anxiously by the phone, and when I got the call, they were like, ‘So we have some news. They made an offer for Mir, and it’s not to you.’ And I was like, ‘Is it Asif Ali?'” It was. “He does it to me every time!'” Shaikh said with a laugh.

Thankfully, the producers had...

‘Deli Boys’ Creator Abdullah Saeed Breaks Down Curating the ‘Gore Level’ in Onyx Collective Comedy Series
Image
“Deli Boys” creator Abdullah Saeed has built a series rife with drugs, violence, and gangland intrigue — so naturally, it’s a comedy.

The Onyx Collective series has all the trappings of a gangster drama while maintaining a comedic tone, as two Pakistani American brothers learn that their father’s business empire was really a front for smuggling drugs.

In an interview with Variety, Saeed said that the violence in the series was initially a way to stand out in a crowded field as he sought to break into screenwriting.

“I had [violence] in the script at different points, because I wanted people to keep reading,” Saeed said. “It really was initially just a way to keep people reading and stand out from the pile. But in the end, it ended up shaping the language of the show in a lot of ways. Jenni Konner was really the curator of our gore level,...

Hulu’s Binge-Worthy ‘Deli Boys’ Is a Chaotic Crime Caper: Review
Image
There is a rich tradition of crime meets comedy — in television, in film, and even in other countries. From “Ocean’s Eleven” to “The Nice Guys” and “The Afterparty” on Apple TV+, it’s always fun to imagine the gritty underworld filled with hilarious characters that don’t belong there. In India, Hindi movies like “Andaz Apna Apna” and “Hera Pheri” and “Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro” scratch the same itch, infusing life-or-death stakes of illegal activity with good old-fashioned hijinks. It’s the spirit alive and well in “Deli Boys,” the 10-episode Hulu debut now available to stream.

Created by Abdullah Saeed, “Deli Boys” follows brothers Raj (Saagar Shaikh) and Mir (Asif Ali) after the sudden death of their father (Iqbal Theba) when they inherit a family business that couldn’t be further from what they imagined. The body is barely cold before they’re enveloped in a world of drugs and murder,...

Hulu’s ‘Deli Boys’ Bends Genres With Comedy, Crime and Conviction | Digital Cover
Image
When “Deli Boys” first started production, star Saagar Shaikh expected the Hulu series — which follows two pampered brothers who take the reins of their dad’s empire of drug-front convenience stores — to feel akin to darker fare like “Breaking Bad” or “Succession.” Instead, the Onyx Collective series dialed up the laughs, blending genres to lock into its distinct tone.

“There is so much heart to the show. There’s so much drama to it, but all of it is seasoned with comedy all over the place,” Shaikh, who stars in “Deli Boys” alongside Asif Ali and Poorna Jagannathan, told TheWrap for our latest digital cover.

“We started off as ‘Succession,’ and then we ended up as ‘Three Stooges,'” Jagannathan added, noting “for context” that creator Abdullah Saeed was behind a series called “Bong Appétit,” where he hosted extravagant cannabis-infused meals. “I’ve never been given a carte blanche on this level of physical comedy,...

Hulu’s ‘Deli Boys’ Puts a Fresh Spin on Crime Comedy: TV Review
Image
Millennials of a certain vintage may know “Deli Boys” creator Abdullah Saeed from his cannabis-related content for Vice, including shows like “Weediquette” and “Bong Appetit.” With his new Hulu sitcom, Saeed has both made the switch to scripted series and upgraded to harder stuff. The namesake protagonists of “Deli Boys,” two spoiled rich kids who suddenly lose their father, are stunned to learn their family legacy isn’t actually a regional chain of Delaware Valley convenience stores: It’s the cocaine smuggling ring for which the delis were just a distribution front.

A crime comedy with a heavy skew toward the comedy, “Deli Boys” sets its unserious tone with the slapstick demise of patriarch Baba Dar (Iqbal Theba), who gushes blood after taking a golf ball to the head as his slack-jawed failsons Mir (Asif Ali) and Raj (Saagar Shaikh) look on in horror. Mir and Raj are a classic odd couple,...

‘Deli Boys’ Plunges Pampered Brothers Into a Life of Crime in Hulu Series Trailer
Image
“Deli Boys” plunges a pair of pampered Pakistani-American brothers (Asif Ali and Saagar Shaikh) into a life of crime, changing their lives in just a split-second.

The trailer, released Tuesday, introduces Ali and Shaikh as Mir and Raj, respectively, two brothers enjoying the fruits of their father’s labor after building an empire of delis.

“It’s up to us to enjoy this life for everyone who looks like us but doesn’t have it,” Raj tells Mir in the Hulu teaser.

Their life of luxury is gone in the blink of an eye, however, when their father dies and the brothers are initiated into the real family business — trafficking drugs.
