Arriving in theaters this weekend is the pulse-pounding and bone-crunching action/horror hybrid Vfw, from director Joe Begos. The film pits a grizzled group of veterans against a ragtag horde of punks who have descended upon the veterans’ local watering hole, resulting in a fight to the bitter end. Written by Max Brallier and Matthew McArdle, Vfw stars Stephen Lang, Martin Kove, William Sadler, Fred Williamson, George Wendt, Tom Williamson, Sierra McCormick, Travis Hammer, and Dora Madison.
Last year, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with both Joe Begos and Stephen Lang while at Fantastic Fest (you can read part one of our interview Here), and the duo chatted about tackling the ambitious action sequences throughout Vfw and the various challenges Begos faced while crafting his most ambitious feature to date.

That co-writer Matthew McArdle remains shocked even after seeing the film he and Max Brallier wrote on the big screen shows how tough the accomplishment proves. Best friends since childhood, the two began their script for Vfw with transparent intentions as far as harkening back to the no-holds-barred VHS gems they’d scour video store shelves to find. Using John Carpenter’s Assault on Precinct 13 as inspiration, they created a group of aging vets decades-removed from service yet still thick as thieves with a drug-fueled, zombie-esque horde threatening to attack their Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in waves. It took seven years, but Dallas Sonnier finally called to say he’d finance it before director Joe Begos, a stellar cast of character actors, and the rejuvenated Fangoria label came aboard.

She creates a convict rehabilitation program, working with a herd of wild horses that have wandered onto her property. She did not anticipate the greed, bureaucracy and vanity that she must overcome to heal the convicts, the horses and ultimately herself.
Check out the trailer:
Running Wild stars Sharon Stone (Casino, Basic Instinct), Tommy Flanagan (FX’s “Sons of Anarchy,” Gladiator), Jason Lewis (NBC’s “Midnight, Texas,” HBO’s “Sex and the City”), Dorian Brown Pham (FX’s “Wilfred,” Home Run), and Tom Williamson (Freeform’s “The Fosters,” All Cheerleaders Die). It’s hard to mention The Fosters, which returns to Freeform on Monday Jan, 25 for the second installment of its third season, without a discussion of diversity. Since its premiere, the show has been lauded for its diverse cast and portrayal of relationships not often seen on television – particularly on teen TV – such as same-sex relationships and those in a mixed and blended family.
Moreover, the show has always used what makes it different – its fearlessness in representing a wide range of issues that affect real teens (and not just the wealthy, white ones) – to create type of drama necessary to fuel and sustain a long-running soap. Unfortunately, the Foster family enters the second half of the third season on shaky ground, and the show itself follows suit – with a lackluster episode that wavers rather than building to an exciting finish.

It's not a horror film itself, but a case could be made that the blood shed in Heathers flows as freely through the genre today as does that of the Dead trilogy or Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It's certainly splattered all over All Cheerleaders Die, a vision of the high school pecking order as bitter as the 1989 pre-Columbine bloodbath, but significantly less witty or humane. All cheerleaders may die, but they don't all leave much behind when they go.
After watching her friend Alexis (Felisha Cooper) killed in a cheerleading stunt gone wrong, Maddy (Caitlin Stasey) tries out for the squad when the new school year begins-and to the surprise of all involved, makes it on. She quickly befriends Tracy (Brooke Butler), who has already started dating Alexis’s old boyfriend team captain Terry (Tom Williamson), much to the chagrin of Maddy’s old girlfriend Leena (Sianoa Smit-McPhee). Lucky McKee is a director I have been familiar with since I saw his 2002 film, May, starring horror mainstay Angela Bettis. McKee went on to direct an excellent episode of the short-lived Masters of Horror television show entitled “Sick Girl”, again starring Bettis. It was, however, McKee’s 2011 film, The Woman, that truly hit me between the eyes and sold me on Lucky as a director. A dark, grotesque, macabre film that dealt with female power and the role of the abuser, The Woman cemented McKee as a horror director to watch, which leads us to this review…

Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge…and Zombies?
Based soley on the title of Lucky McKee’s (May, The Woods) All Cheerleaders Die, I had a kind of preternatural premonition that I would be enjoyin’ this one. Hell, based on that title, I can’t believe ol’ Lucky himself didn’t call yours cruelly and have him introduce the film like some sort of sexy William Castle (which totally could have happened if I was available, but of course my duties to the House that Fearsome Forry built have kept me too busy to make cameos).
So was my uncanny ability to completely judge whether I’ll like a movie or not based solely on its title still the stuff of legend,...

Lucky Mckee has had his ups and downs with various projects from the criminally underseen The Woods to the success of films like The Woman. With his latest, All Cheerleaders Die, Mckee collaborated with his old college buddy Chris Sivertson to relive their college days by fleshing out a short film to a full feature film filled with cheerful mayhem.
Here’s what Mckee had to say about the film, which is now available on VOD with a Blu-ray/DVD release on July .
Dread Central: Did your success working with Jack Ketchum lean you towards collaborating again this time around with Chris? What advantages do you find in that kind of mutual relationship?
Lucky McKee: Film is, in its essence, a collaborative art. It's a blast to create stories with good brains. Chris and I have collaborated like this since we were teenagers so it's pretty natural at this point.

Co-director and writer Chris Sivertson took the time to speak with us recently regarding his collaboration with longtime friend and cohort Lucky Mckee for their new film All Cheerleaders Die, which enjoyed its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Dread Central:Can you talk a little about how long the idea for All Cheerleaders Die has been rolling around in both of your heads? Did it just arise from a late night wandering around the USC campus?
Chris Sivertson: We came up with the idea about a year out of film school at USC. We'd been reading indie magazines, seeing how filmmakers were picking up the first Dv cameras and making b-movies for very little money. We watched a bunch of those films and decided that it would be a great format to shoot our first feature. Low cost, low risk, freedom to experiment. So we cooked up a simple idea: football players vs.

Sapphic Sillies: Sivertson & McKee’s Latest Lacks Spirit
Lucky McKee and Chris Sivertson, old college friends and now notably notorious film directors (though for different reasons) have paired up to share directorial and screenwriting credit for their new film, All Cheerleaders Die, a film which happily delivers content that matches its over-the-top title. Originally, this was a short film of the duo’s from 2001, now developed for feature length, though one gets the sense that there’s not quite enough material to justify the expansion. Sadly, this is hardly on par with McKee’s other perversely enjoyable horror films, such as the exceptional May (2002) or the gritty schlock of The Woman (2011). The good news is, it’s definitely better than Sivertson’s infamous 2007 film, I Know Who Killed Me (2007).
Maddy (Caitlin Stasey) is a rebellious outsider at high school, certainly not involved with the popular girls, but certainly not a social outcast either.

Based on a video project they collaborated on a number of years ago now, co-directors Lucky McKee and Chris Sivertson’s All Cheerleaders Die is a pitch black comedy/horror film that takes a wickedly fun and savage look at high school and gender politics, all with a supernatural bent. If you’re a fan Heathers, Jawbreaker, or The Craft, then All Cheerleaders Die is positively a movie that’ll have you busting out our your pom-poms and spirit fingers in no time.
While the title may sound like a spoiler, don’t let that fool you for a moment; All Cheerleaders Die is anything but your typical high school/supernatural/occult mash-up, which certainly makes for a wonderfully unusual experience. Everything kicks off with resident good girl Maddy (Caitlin Stasey) deciding to go undercover as a wanna-be cheerleader so that she can humiliate her high school’s football star...

Alexis (Felisha Cooper) is head cheerleader and happy to share her knowledge and years of experience as one of the blessed with the less fortunate. Maddy (Caitlin Stasey) is one of those less fortunate, but when a horrific cheerleading accident leaves Alexis dead Maddy steps up and joins the squad. The remaining pom pom girls welcome her begrudgingly, but they don’t realize that she has an ulterior motive for climbing the social ladder. She’s planning to push someone off when she gets to the top. Maddy’s plans change somewhat when an altercation with the captain of the football team (Tom Williamson) leads to a car chase, a car crash and a quartet of dead cheerleaders. Maddy’s Wiccan ex (Sianoa Smit-McPhee) is having none of that though, and soon the four girls are brought back to (something resembling) life with a few caveats. They’re not actually alive, they...

Even a casual glance at his filmography, which includes the underrated The Woods, the shocking The Woman, and the still wonderful May, tells you this is a male filmmaker who is fascinated by "bad" female characters. (Mr. McKee also did a fine film about a man and his dog. It's called Red, but it's not pertinent to the "female" angle I'm employing here, so let's just move on.)
So what makes Lucky McKee tackling female-centric horror noteworthy this time around? McKee's latest, which he co-wrote and co-directed with his old friend Chris Sivertson (The Lost), is the funniest film of his career. May certainly displays some wonderful dark humor, but All Cheerleaders Die is a colorful, energetic, and appreciably unpredictable mash-up of The Craft, Tamara, and Carrie. Sorta.
