Society of the Snow Credit – Netflix

Society of the Snow is a Spanish survival drama film directed by J.A. Bayona, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Bernat Vilaplana, Jaime Marques, and Nicolás Casariego. Based on the 2009 non-fiction book of the same name by Pablo Vierci, the 2024 film is set in 1972, and it follows a Uruguayan rugby team after their flight crashes in the Andes Mountains. J.A. Bayona Reveals Why He Was Surprised That Audiences Flocked To ‘Society Of The Snow’ — MIPCOM
Image
J.A. Bayona’s Society of the Snow is one of Netflix’s most-watched movies of this year so far yet the director revealed today it was mainly intended for an older audience.

Speaking at MIPCOM, the Oscar-nominee said his creative team were “surprised” when the movie about the Uruguayan rugby team’s survival experience after their plane crashed in the Andes proved to be a “phenomenon” with younger audiences.

“Society of the Snow was meant to be for a more mature audience,” said Bayona. “When I look back it makes sense because it had young actors going through a difficult situation and the younger audience felt related to these characters. But it was never intended to be a film for young people and it became one.”

Society of the Snow, which launched in late 2023, was third in Netflix’s most-watched movies of the first half of this year, and top...

Sitges 2024: ‘1978’ Review
Image
Stars: Agustín Pardella, Carlos Portaluppi, Mario Alarcón | Written by Luciano Onetti, Nicolás Onetti, Camilo Zaffora | Directed by Luciano Onetti, Nicolás Onetti

1978 is the new film from directing duo Luciano and Nicolas Ornetti, the Argentinian filmmakers (and brothers) behind Abrakadabra (2018) and What the Waters Left Behind (2017). Set during the titular year, it conjures up an intriguing clash between human and supernatural evil, but it never really adds up to the sum of its parts.

The film takes place in Buenos Aires, during the 1978 World Cup final between Argentina and Holland. With the country under brutal military dictatorship, the eyes of the world are focused on Argentina, but behind closed doors, government forces are continuing their routine activities of kidnapping, torturing and “disappearing” anyone they consider subversive.

Accordingly, 1978 opens on a group of torturers, including gruff, no-nonsense boss Moro (Mario Alarcón) and cheerful, overweight Carancho (Carlos Portaluppi), as they work over their latest victim.

Directed by Luciano and Nicolás Onetti, from a screenplay by Luciano Onetti, Nicolás Onetti and Camilo Zaffora, the story is set during the World Cup final between Argentina and Holland, and against the backdrop of a military dictatorship. A group of torturers breaks into a home and kidnaps a group of young people before taking them to a clandestine detention center. They turn out to be part of a macabre cult guided by an unknown supernatural force and the...

The ‘Society of the Snow’ Prosthetic Makeup Was Initially Much Gorier
Image
“Society of the Snow,” J. A. Bayona’s survival thriller about the real-life 1972 plane crash in the Andes with the Uruguayan rugby team, required painstaking SFX makeup for corpses, wounds, and severe physical deterioration. For prosthetic makeup artists David Martí and Montse Ribé, it was a far cry from their Oscar-winning creature work on Guillermo del Toro’s “Pan’s Labyrinth” 17 years ago. That was fantastical; this was based on reality. It was complicated, grueling, and performed under the most difficult conditions, including the cramped fuselage interior set and on location in the snowy mountains of Sierra Nevada, Spain.

Yet Netflix’s Spanish international Oscar nominee was much gorier until Bayona cut the most gruesome shots from the final edit (including severed heads and eating flesh from corpses) after realizing that it was too unsettling. “We worked like crazy doing the dummy [corpses] all around with ounces and ounces of silicone,” Ribé told IndieWire.

1 Tragic BTS Society Of The Snow Detail Will Greatly Change How You See Canessa In The Movie
Image
Society of the Snow's realistic portrayal is attributed to the cast's experience with low-temperature conditions and filming with real snow. Matias Recalt's personal tragedy of losing his father brought him closer to Roberto Canessa's character in an unexpected way. Recalt's connection with Canessa was further strengthened by his knowledge of medicine, coincidentally matching Canessa's profession as a doctor.

One of the members of Society of the Snow's cast recently revealed an interesting behind-the-scenes tragic detail that adds a deeper layer to Roberto Canessa's character in the movie. Society of the Snow, Netflix's most recent survival film directed by Spanish director Alejandro Bayona, has certainly brought back a lot of attention to a forgotten real-life story, such as the Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 crash from 1972. The film has been praised for its realism and the importance it gives to the people who didn't make it back home.

How Netflix’s Harrowing Movie ‘Society of the Snow’ Finds Hope in the Horror of Survival
Image
The doomed flight of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 remains one of the most astonishing stories of real life survival horror the world has ever known. Often called “the Miracle in the Andes,” this harrowing tale begins with a plane crash that left 12 dead and 33 stranded among the snowy mountain peaks of Argentina. With only a week’s worth of food, those left alive after the first few days were forced to eat the bodies of their fallen companions to survive the brutal cold and inhospitable environment. With the world assuming them dead, Fernando ‘Nando’ Parrado, and Roberto Canessa eventually made a desperate trek through the treacherous mountain range with little more than clothing assembled from the wreckage and a homemade sleeping bag. 72 days after the initial disaster, sixteen survivors emerged from the mountains, dirty, starving, but determined to live.

This incredible story has been told many times in memoirs, documentaries...

Society Of The Snow Left Out One Harsh Reality About The Real Mountain Rescue
Image
Society of the Snow authentically depicts the real-life tragedy of the Andes plane crash, including gore, violence, and the frightening aspects of survival. Director J.A. Bayona worked closely with author Pablo Vierci and survivors' families to ensure the film's genuineness, even filming at the crash site. The real rescue was difficult, with helicopters only able to airlift 6 out of the remaining 14 survivors due to bad weather, leaving 8 survivors to wait until the following day.

The Netflix hit movie Society of the Snow leaves out one brutal aspect of the rescue of the 1972 Andes plane crash survivors. Although the survival thriller omits the harsh reality of the real mountain rescue, Society of the Snow does not fail to include a great deal of gore, several violent or disturbing scenes, and an overall frightening display of survival to depict the real-life tragedy of the Andes flight disaster. The film is a dramatized...

On-Air Film Review: Staying Alive in ‘Society of the Snow’
Image
Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson on Wbgr-fm on January 4th, 2023, reviewing “Society of the Snow,” the third film version of one of the great survival stories in history, as it occurred in the Andes Mountain. Currently on Netflix.

Rating: 3.5/5.0

In 1972, an Uruguay rugby team takes off in two engine prop plane to fiy from Montevideo in Uruguay to Santiago, Chile. While over the Andes mountains in western Argentina, the inexperienced pilot reads his instruments wrong and hits a mountain ridge, shearing the wings and tail off. The fuselage with the passengers then slid down a glacier to rest in a snowy expanse in the middle of Andes nowhere. Of the 45 passengers and crew aboard, 12 died immediately and several others succumbed thereafter in the harsh conditions. It came down to 16 souls. They survived 60 days before two of them climbed a mountain to rescuers.

Society Of The Snow Review: Spain’s Oscar Contender Is Devastating & Gripping
Image
Society of the Snow is a gripping and technically impressive survival film that tells the true story of the passengers of a crashed airplane in the Andes mountains. The movie honors each character and delves into their struggles and sacrifices with a sobering and earnest approach. Despite the horrifying reality, the film injects moments of levity and maintains a faint thread of hope, creating a tricky but successful tonal balance.

In 1972, a Uruguayan airplane crashed in the Andes mountains, beginning a devastating story of survival and loss. After spending some time in the fictional worlds of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, director J.A. Bayona returns to reality with Society of the Snow, a gripping new feature that depicts the story of the passengers on the fatal Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571. As Spain's entry for Best International Feature at the 2024 Oscars, Society of the Snow...

Society Of The Snow Movie Review: Ja Bayona Retells Journey Of Andes Survivors In Gorgeous & Terrifying Film

Society of the Snow Movie Review Rating:

Star Cast: Enzo Vogrincic, Agustin Pardella, Matias Recalt, Tomas Wolf, Diego Vegezzi, Esteban Kukuriczka, and Francisco Romero

Director: J.A. Bayona

Society of the Snow Movie Review ( Photo Credit – IMDb )

What’s Good: Bayona and his team match the scope of the environment with the scope of the character’s internal conflict, creating a powerful dilemma.

What’s Bad: The movie’s overreliance on narration makes some of the most potent moments feel flat when the film needs to explain all the internal turmoil in words.

Loo Break: While the movie is long, the pacing is relatively fast, and we see our character fall into more desperate situations by the minute; there are no breaks here.

Watch or Not?: This is a must-watch, especially now that we are close to the awards season.

Society of the Snow Review
Image
Plot: The true story of The Uruguayan 1972 Andes flight disaster, where a team of Rugby players crashed in the Andes, and the survivors had to endure the harsh elements, avalanches and starvation before finally being rescued thanks to their own heroic efforts.

Review: The Uruguayan Andes Crash is one of the most compelling survival stories ever told. There’s a reason it’s become a popular topic for documentarians and filmmakers, but with it dramatized so brilliantly in the film Alive, what’s the point of another version? I was wary of digging into Netflix’s lavish new movie, but the fact that it was directed by J. A. Bayona, whose film The Impossible (about the 2004 Tsunami) is pretty underrated, made me curious. I passed on seeing this at a local theatrical screening here in Montreal to watch the screener, but about 20 minutes in, I realized I had made a terrible mistake.

‘Society of the Snow’ Review: J. A. Bayona’s Disaster Drama Is as Harrowing as the Uruguayan Plane Crash That Inspired It
Image
The lore of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which fell out of the sky and crashed into the South American Andes in 1972, typically summons grisly images of cannibalism and gangrene. The 72 days that a Uruguayan rugby team en route to Chile endured, snow-drifted and hungry, have been dramatized elsewhere, including the 1993 survival drama “Alive,” starring a mostly white and Anglicized cast. Now, after a moment under the tentpole sun with the ill-conceived “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” Spanish filmmaker J.A. Bayona returns to the style of more personal and human disasters with “Society of the Snow.” Shot in Spanish with Uruguayan accents, this muscular and often brutal depiction is chiseled with authenticity, but it’s too psychologically schematic to make much in the way of an emotional impact.

That’s not to say Bayona and his team haven’t devised some seriously impressive filmmaking: “Society of the Snow” was filmed in Spain...

Yellowjackets (2021)
Society of the Snow Review: Bearing Too-Reverent Witness to Andes Flight Disaster
Yellowjackets (2021)
The story of the 1972 Andes plane crash and its survivors has inspired many books and movies, even the TV series Yellowjackets. With Society of the Snow, J.A. Bayona adapts Pablo Vierci’s book of the same name to make something that’s close to the reality of the experiences endured by those aboard Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571. The aircraft was carrying 45 passengers and crew, including 19 members of the Old Christians Club rugby team, when it crashed in the Andes. Of those, only 16 would survive across an ordeal that lasted two months.

The crash itself is harrowingly portrayed at the start of the film, and with a minimum of buildup. The plane’s tail and wings are torn away on impact while the fuselage sails down the snowy mountainside like a sled. We catch flashes of the passengers’ limbs twisting and breaking, of metal shooting into flesh. The story moves quickly from there,...

Oscars: Spain Selects J.A. Bayona’s Netflix Drama ‘Society Of The Snow’ For Best International Film Race
Image
Spain has selected J.A. Bayona’s latest film, Society of the Snow, which debuted last month at the Venice Film Festival, as its entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 2024 Oscars.

The announcement marks the first time a Netflix-backed film has been selected by Spain and the second time J.A. Bayona has made the cut following his 2007 film The Orphanage.

Society of the Snow closed this year’s Venice Film Festival. Based on the book of the same name by Pablo Vierci, first published in 2008, the film charts the story of the 45 people who, on October 13, 1972, boarded Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 from Montevideo to Chile. There were five crew members on board and 40 passengers, including 19 members of the Old Christians Club rugby team. Tragedy struck when the pilot began his descent too early, crashing into the Andes and killing 12 immediately. The survivors clung to the belief that help was coming,...

‘Society of the Snow’ Review: J.A. Bayona Blends Visceral Action With Existential Despair in Overlong but Affecting Survival Thriller
Image
The 1972 disaster in which Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 went down in a remote part of the Andes while carrying a rugby team, their friends and family members to a match in Chile has been the subject of numerous books, documentaries and two dramatic features — the 1976 Mexploitation quickie, Survive!, which fell short of its exclamation point; and Frank Marshall’s 1993 Hollywood version, Alive, a middling entry in Ethan Hawke’s early screen career.

While it’s a fictionalized, gender-switched reinvention only loosely inspired by Flight 571, Showtime’s Yellowjackets has paradoxically made a bigger cultural splash than either of those films, with its genre mashup of horror, mystery and mordant humor.

Spanish director J.A. Bayona, who established his disaster/survival movie bona fides with the tsunami thriller The Impossible, now weighs in with the Netflix feature, Society of the Snow (La Sociedad de la Nieve), reclaiming the real-life tragedy and story of human resilience — and,...
