‘Nerdy’ Rami Malek is an ‘unlikely action hero’ in ‘The Amateur’ reviews: ‘One of the better spy movies in years’
Image
The Amateur opens Friday from director James Hawes, with Oscar winner Rami Malek playing a CIA cryptographer who seeks revenge against his wife's killers. Critics' reviews are mixed overall, with the action thriller earning a 65 percent at Rotten Tomatoes and a 53 score on Metacritic.

Based on the 1981 novel by Robert Littell, the 20th Century Studios' version of The Amateur plays out like Jason Bourne meets The Da Vinci Code, with Malek's "nerdy" character Charles "Charlie" Heller being praised by film experts as an "unlikely action hero." Joining him in the cast are Laurence Fishburne, Rachel Brosnahan, Caitríona Balfe, Michael Stuhlbarg, Holt McCallany, and Julianne Nicholson.

Before winning his Oscar for portraying Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody (2018), Malek took home an Emmy for his role as geeky computer hacker Elliot Alderson in Mr. Robot (2016). In other words, playing a character like Charlie, who specializes in cryptology, is right up his alley.

Millie Bobby Brown’s $320 Million Netflix Epic Flops Hard: 15% Rotten Tomatoes, AI Controversy Sparks Outrage!
Image
Actor Millie Bobby Brown’s £245M Netflix Epic (Photo Credit – Netflix)

Netflix’s latest blockbuster, The Electric State, was meant to be a triumph after spending a staggering $320 Million budget and setting the record as the streamers most expensive project ever.

Besides, the film also boasted an ensemble cast of Hollywood heavyweights, such as Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt, backed by Woody Harrelson, Ke Huy Quan, Stanley Tucci, Anthony Mackie, and Giancarlo Esposito. And with the Russo brothers, the minds behind the last two Avengers films, at the helm, what could possibly go wrong?

Turns out, quite a lot, apparently.

A Sci-Fi Premise That Should Have Soared

Instead of universal acclaim, the film has been met with an avalanche of criticism, now sitting at a bleak 15% on Rotten Tomatoes. Its ambitious premise, which is a post-war world where robots once fought for their rights, and Brown’s character embarking...

The Hugh Jackman Fantasy Flop That Lost Warner Bros. Over $100 Million
Image
In April 2015, The Hollywood Reporter noted that Warner Bros. was preparing to "flood the market" that summer with a slate of nine films designed to fill the gap left by the absence of Christopher Nolan's "Dark Knight" trilogy and the "Harry Potter" films. At the time, Warner's domestic distribution chief Dan Fellman told the outlet, "It will be tough work, but I think it will pay off."

In some ways, WB's approach did pay off. The Dwayne Johnson-led "San Andreas," produced on a budget of $110 million, raked in $474 million worldwide. And while "Mad Max: Fury Road" didn't fare quite as well, making $380 million worldwide on a $150 million budget, it did at least garner critical acclaim and remains one of the best movies in the "Mad Max" saga. But one big-budget Warner project failed spectacularly on both a critical and commercial front.

‘The Seed of the Sacred Fig’ reviews: The ‘gripping’ and ‘brilliant’ Oscar contender releases in limited theaters
Image
“The Seed of the Sacred Fig” released in limited theaters on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2024, so now is the perfect time to check out some of its glowing critics’ reviews.

First up, a bit of a primer. This Persian language political thriller comes from Iranian writer-director Mohammad Rasoulof, but it’s actually Germany’s Oscars submission for Best International Feature because Rasoulof has fled political persecution in his native country. The plot follows an investigating judge (Missagh Zareh) who grapples with paranoia amid political unrest in Tehran. When his gun disappears, he suspects his wife (Soheila Golestani) and daughters, and imposes fearful measures that strain family ties all while societal rules crumble.

During the Cannes Film Festival, Rasoulof discussed the government’s targeting of him and his films in an interview with The Guardian, saying, “Like any other dictatorship or totalitarian system, they want absolute control over images they don’t like...

Francis Ford Coppola
Megalopolis | Francis Ford Coppola’s plans to make the film interactive were scuppered by job losses at Amazon
Francis Ford Coppola
Originally, Francis Ford Coppola wanted to use an Alexa device to let audiences interact with his epic, Megalopolis. Then job losses at Amazon blew the idea.

When Megalopolis made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, several reviews described a fascinating detail. At a certain point in Francis Ford Coppola’s fantastical epic, an usher walked up to the front of the cinema and began directly addressing the screen in a brief back-and-forth with Cesar, the character played by Adam Driver.

So what’s that all about?

A fascinating interview by Robbie Collin over at The Telegraph has the answer. In it, Coppola explains that, while he was readying production on Megalopolis in 2021, he had the idea of allowing the audience to interact with the movie, at least in one specific scene. To achieve this, he made a deal with Amazon to produce a specialised version of its Alexa device,...

‘Joker: Folie á Deux’ Review Roundup: Critics Say Lady Gaga ‘Shines’ Even if the Film Is a ‘Waste of Her Presence’
Image
Reviews of Todd Phillips’ “Joker: Folie á Deux” have officially been filed, and critics say the “Joker” sequel was a waste of Lady Gaga’s talent. Some even added that the flick simply wasn’t needed or doesn’t measure up to its predecessor.

The film, which stars Gaga, Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz, Harry Lawtey and more, diversifies itself from the film as it features at least 15 reimagined versions of well-known songs. While some may not have been fans of the musical additions, The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw noted it “gives it structure and flavor” the first film didn’t have.

Before “Joker: Folie á Deux” hits theaters on Oct. 4, take a peek at what film critics have to say about it, below:

The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw said “Joker: Folie á Deux” was as “tedious” as the first film, but said its opening was “sensational.”

“It ends up as strident,...

Beetlejuice 2's Rotten Tomatoes Debut Score Revealed
Image
The critics have spoken with their early reviews of the new sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Ahead of the movie's wide release, the film has received its debut score on Rotten Tomatoes, and it's currently pretty close to the original movie.

Based on 40 reviews jafter its Venice Film Festival premiere, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice currently has a score of 78% on the Tomatometer. The current score is just four points shy of matching the original number that's held by Beetlejuice at 82%. The Beetlejuice Beetlejuice score is very likely to fluctuate as reviews continue to come in, but if the sequels garners more positive reviews, it could even surpass the original movie's number. Because Beetlejuice Beetlejuice hasn't had its wide release just yet, there's not an audience score for the film, though the original matches the same rating on the Tomatometer, also sitting at 82%.

Nicole Kidman is ‘bold,’ ‘brave’ and ‘immaculate’ in ‘Babygirl,’ according to critics at Venice Film Festival
Image
“Babygirl” is the latest film to premiere at the Venice Film Festival and launch its star into the awards conversation. The erotic thriller by Dutch director Halina Reijn (who previously helmed the 2022 horror comedy “Bodies Bodies Bodies”) was unveiled on August 30. It stars Nicole Kidman as a CEO who has an affair with a much younger intern (Harris Dickinson), and the reviews from the fest so far have been excellent.

Based on the first 15 reviews counted on MetaCritic, the film has a rating of 82 out of 100, indicating “universal acclaim.” Almost all of those reviews (14 out of 15) are categorized as positive. One review is mixed, but none yet are outright negative. Over on Rotten Tomatoes, where reviews are classified as simply positive or negative, the film is rated 85% fresh based on its first 13 reviews, only two of which give the movie a poor assessment.

How good is Angelina Jolie in ‘Maria’? Critics at Venice Film Festival say …
Image
It was just announced that Pablo Larrain‘s biopic “Maria,” about opera legend Maria Callas (played by Angelina Jolie), was acquired by Netflix for distribution, but it has now screened for journalists. It had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on August 29. How good is it, though? The early reviews are pouring in from the Italian fest.

Based on the first 15 reviews counted by MetaCritic so far, the film has a “generally favorable” rating of 63. Eight of those reviews are classified as positive, while seven are somewhat mixed, though none are outright negative. But on Rotten Tomatoes, which considers reviews only as positive or negative, the film is 87% fresh based on 15 reviews, which means only two of them give the film a thumbs down. That disparity between scores suggests that most reviewers like the film, but some of those thumbs-up ratings might be a little ambivalent.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice's Rotten Tomatoes Score Floats out of Venice Film Festival
Image
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is the latest in a long line of legacy sequels to attempt to recapture magic from more than three decades ago, and the first reviews of Tim Burtons return to the afterlife seem to suggest he has managed to pull it off. With the manic energy of Michael Keaton, the support of franchise returnees Winona Ryder and Catherine OHara, and a roster of capable newcomers including Jenna Ortega, Willem Dafoe, Justin Theroux, and Monica Bellucci, say his name three times because the Ghost with the Most is a long way from being toast.

The Venice Film Festival played host to the world premiere of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, and as reviews from the event began to trickle onto Rotten Tomatoes, it became clear that this movie is everything many fans have been asking for since 1988 introduced the world to its one and only bio-exorcist. Now, as unlikely as it seemed...

Twisters currently registers 80% on the Tomatometer based on 40 reviews. Critics are torn when it comes to Glen Powells new film, but Twisters does have a much stronger Rotten Tomatoes score than that of its predecessor. Twisters opens in theaters on July 19.

“I thought the reviews would be mid”: Fans Can’t Believe Glen Powell’s Twisters is Now Getting Compared to Tom Cruise’s $1.46 Billion Masterpiece
Image
Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick is one of the best movies to have been released recently and watching it in theatres was one hell of an experience. Both adrenaline and emotions were at an all-time high and we were on the edge of our seats for half the film. Remember when Maverick and Goose died but Glen Powell’s Hangman swooped in to save the day? We all collectively released a breath we didn’t know we were holding in. Basically, the film was a 10/10 experience.

After Maverick, Glen Powell seems to have become Hollywood’s favorite as his career is soaring through the skies. He will soon be seen in Lee Isaac Chung’s Twisters which is releasing in just a few days. While the trailer was quite good, fans initially believed the disaster film would be nothing extraordinary.

How Argylle Director Matthew Vaughn Feels About The Movie's Terrible Reviews
Image
Matthew Vaughn is a savvy filmmaker who should know his films, particularly when they go sailing over the top narratively and tonally — which describes pretty much all of them save for his 2004 debut directorial effort, "Layer Cake" and the open-hearted whimsy of "Stardust" — tend to divide critics. You either go with the rousingly ultraviolent superhero satire of "Kick-Ass," or you rage against its vile excesses, chief among them being the transformation of an 11-year-old into a gun-wielding, slicing-and-dicing whirlwind of death known as Hit Girl. He specializes in juvenile subversion, but if you can get past the giddy excess of his films, they occasionally contain a surprising degree of thematic depth.

Vaughn's 2024 flop "Argylle" was not, on any level, a thoughtful film. It's a star-studded stew of a spy-comedy romp that's meant as a one-and-done spinoff from the director's largely successful "Kingsman" franchise. On the surface, given its colorful assortment of celebrities,...

What Critics Are Saying About Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom
Image
Ladies and gentlemen, blobfishes and goblin sharks, put your fins together for the long-awaited return of Arthur Curry, aka Aquaman, aka the King of Atlantis. The sea-dwelling superhero played by Jason Momoa has been away from the big screen for five years (aside from a post-credits cameo in "The Flash"), but this week he returns in "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom." After three DC Comics-based box office bombs in a row this year, Warner Bros. is hoping to score a win with Aquaman's second solo outing -- but the signs so far aren't positive.

Between rumors of behind-the-scenes turmoil and a review embargo lifting just a few hours before preview showings begin in North America, some fans feared that "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" might stink worse than a fish market. Based on the first wave of reviews, it seems those fears were justified.

Rebel Moon Lands 23% Rotten Tomatoes Score, Critics Take Aim At ‘Banal’ & ‘Bewildering’ Space Opera

Critics have issues with Zack Snyder's approach to the space opera in the disappointing Rebel Moon - Part One, calling it derivative and lacking in compelling characters. Some reviewers highlight the passion and visuals in Rebel Moon, but feel that the movie is overwhelmed by its own self-importance and lacks a coherent plot. If Coyote Vs Acme can (rightly) be saved, Batgirl and Scoob! 2 should be next
Image
Warner Bros might finally be learning to undelete films following its Coyote Vs Acme debacle: now it should revisit its disastrous cull of Batgirl and Scoob! 2.

It’s been a difficult week for Warner Bros Discovery, in a year that’s not been shy of them. Not that filmmakers and film fans are offering much sympathy for the company, which is in danger of making a habit of canning completed films.

The story so far.

Following its 2022 decision to scrap both Batgirl and Scoob! 2: The Holiday Haunt, a pair of pretty much completed movies that collectively had cost over $120m to make, it threw the anvil last week on Coyote Vs Acme.

As film critic Robbie Collin wrote on whatever Twitter’s called now, “Why would anyone work for a studio that makes a habit of this?”

And that’s the problem. Doing it once? A nasty one-off. Twice?...

Venice Film Festival 2023 reviews: Woody Allen’s ‘Coup de Chance’ has ‘charm and sparkle,’ ‘a jaunty tone of deadpan glee’ and his ‘zestiest dialogue in years’

“Coup de Chance” bowed at the 2023 Venice Film Festival on Monday, September 4. Written and directed by Woody Allen, it’s the filmmaker’s 50th feature and the first shot entirely in the French language with English subtitles. The 87-year-old Allen was controversially on hand to attend the screening in person, drawing a small group of protestors on site due to longstanding but never substantiated child sexual abuse allegations made by his daughter Dylan Farrow. The audience in attendance at the world premiere warmly embraced the feature and its writer-director with a reported three-minute ovation upon its conclusion.

Premiering out of competition at the festival, the film was shot in Paris and features an all-French cast. First ‘The Killer’ Reactions Are Mixed on David Fincher’s Stylish Yet ‘Curiously Inert’ Thriller
David Fincher
Director David Fincher debuted his first film in three years Sunday at the Venice Film Festival and the results are rapturous, if a bit muted.

“The Killer” tells the story of a hitman (Michael Fassbender) dealing with a botched job. As TheWrap’s Ben Croll said in his review, “The Killer” is “like a sideways follow-up to ‘The Social Network’ than anything else.” That cold formalism is being pointed out in several top critics reviews, with Vulture’s Bilge Ebiri saying, “David Fincher’s The Killer seems to be about its own pointlessness.”

Croll explained in his review that “For all the wit and satirical shadings, “The Killer” gets down to business with ruthless efficiency. Like new installments in an ongoing series, the film is split into chapters, each set in a new locale, each named for a new target, and each playing up a slightly different set of skills.

Venice Film Festival reviews: ‘Maestro’ is a ‘worthy tribute’ to Leonard Bernstein, ‘superb and deeply felt’
Image
“Maestro” bowed at the 2023 Venice Film Festival on Saturday, September 2. The film, which tells the story of famed composer Leonard Bernstein (Bradley Cooper) and his decades-long relationship with Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan), recently sparked debate over Cooper’s use of a prosthetic nose to portray the Jewish music legend. But what did journalists think when they finally got to see the whole film?

The film already has a MetaCritic score of 82 based on 15 reviews that have come out of the fest as of this writing — 14 of them positive and one of them classified as mixed, but none outright negative. Over on Rotten Tomatoes the film rates 95% fresh based on 20 reviews, which means only one review there was classified as negative.

Stephanie Zacharek (Time) says the film, which Cooper also directed, is “superb and deeply felt … This is a complex and sophisticated picture, the kind of grown-up love story we see all too rarely these days,...

Venice Film Festival 2023 ‘Ferrari’ review round-up: Adam Driver portrays Enzo Ferrari in Michael Mann’s ‘heady, intricately dark, raptly absorbing’ film
Image
The first reviews are in from Thursday night’s Venice Film Festival world premiere of the Michael Mann-directed major Oscar contender “Ferrari,” the action-packed Neon study of the Italian racer and sports car entrepreneur Enzo Ferrari starring Adam Driver as Ferrari, Penelope Cruz as his wife Laura and Shailene Woodley as his mistress Lina Lardi. It focuses on three pivotal months in the life of Ferrari back in 1957, casting its focus on that year’s grueling Mille Miglia endurance race and the love triangle between Enzo and his women. While the early critiques are mixed with some lukewarm ones, the majority are uniformly positive and include a few outright raves.

Here is a sampling:

Owen Gleiberman of Variety raves, “In Michael Mann’s heady, intricately dark, raptly absorbing ‘Ferrari,’ it isn’t just the action that’s fraught with thrilling danger. Every moment of the drama moves with a sense of high-stakes dread,...

‘Oppenheimer’ premiere reactions: ‘Incredible’ Christopher Nolan drama is a ‘spectacular achievement’
Image
Now it has become “Oppenheimer,” the destroyer of doubts.

On Tuesday, Christopher Nolan’s drama debuted in Paris, meaning the lid has been officially raised on one of the year’s most-anticipated projects. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the early response from those critics and journalists who have seen “Oppenheimer” is effusive.

“Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ is truly a spectacular achievement, in its truthful, concise adaptation, inventive storytelling and nuanced performances from Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, and the many, many others involved —- some just for a scene,” Lindsay Bahr from the Associated Press wrote on Twitter. “It’s hard to talk about something as dense as this in something as silly as a tweet or thread but ‘Oppenheimer’ really is a serious, philosophical, adult drama that’s as tense and exciting as ‘Dunkirk.’ And the big moment – That Moment – is awe-inspiring.”

Oppenheimer’s First Reactions Anticipate Another Masterpiece from Christopher Nolan
Image
It seems that those who are going to enjoy a double feature of Barbie and Oppenheimer will not be disappointed. After the positive first reactions to Greta Gerwig's film, the new Christopher Nolan’s project also surprises with its first comments and is ready to surprise the audience with a new masterpiece from the acclaimed director.

Based on the book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the movie focuses on the life of one of those responsible for creating the atomic bomb and, therefore, one of the men behind some of the most significant events in the history of the last century.

Oppenheimer includes an amazing cast lead by Cillian Murphy as the famous scientist, Emily Blunt as his wife, and Tom Conti as Albert Einstein. They are joined by Benny Safdie, Matt Damon, Josh Peck, Kenneth Branagh, Florence Pugh, Robert Downey Jr., Rami Malek,...

Cillian Murphy in Oppenheimer (2023)
First ‘Oppenheimer’ Reactions Call Christopher Nolan’s Historical Epic a ‘Total Knockout’
Cillian Murphy in Oppenheimer (2023)
“Oppenheimer,” Christopher Nolan’s three-hour biography of Robert J. Oppenheimer (played by Nolan regular Cillian Murphy), one of the architects of the nuclear bomb, is nearly here and ahead of its July 21 release date the social embargo has been lifted and the first thoughts are coming through. (The movie just had its world premiere in Paris.)

Bilge Ebiri, critic for New York Magazine and Vulture (and perhaps our greatest living film writer), said the film was “incredible.” “A relentlessly paced, insanely detailed, intricate historical drama that builds and builds and builds until Nolan brings the hammer down in the most astonishing, shattering way,” Ebiri said on Twitter.

Oppenheimer is…incredible. The word that keeps coming to mind is "fearsome." A relentlessly paced, insanely detailed, intricate historical drama that builds and builds and builds until Nolan brings the hammer down in the most astonishing, shattering way.

Elemental 4Dx Poster Further Teases Pixar's Element City
Image
The beloved animation studio Pixar has revealed a new look at their upcoming rom-com drama, Elemental, courtesy of a stunning 4Dx poster. This latest look at Elemental puts main characters Ember and Wade at its center, with the pair attempting to navigate their way around Element City, a metropolis inhabited by personifications of the four main elements, fire, water, earth, and air.

4Dx is arguably the best way to see Elemental, considering it gets viewers to viscerally experience the actual elements themselves. You can check out the new Elemental 4Dx poster below and learn more about the film and the format.

Elemental is all set to be led by Leah Lewis as Ember Lumen and Mamoudou Athie as Wade Ripple, with the duo of opposing elements growing closer as the story progresses as they slowly discover how much they actually have in common.

First Elemental Reviews Are Mixed On Pixar's Beautiful & "Overcomplicated" New Movie
Image
The first reviews for Pixar's Elemental have arrived from the Cannes International Film Festival. Directed by Peter Sohn and written by John Hoberg, Kat Likkel, and Brenda Hsueh, the movie stars Mamoudou Athie and Leah Lewis as Wade Ripple and Ember Lumen, respectively. Both characters are made from completely different elements, but slowly realize throughout the movie how much they have in common while living in a world where all elements live together.

Critics who attended Elemental's first screening at Cannes have now begun to share their thoughts on Pixar's latest summer offering. While some have praised the movie as one of Pixar's best in recent memory, others were left with mixed feelings about the end result, feeling that its beautiful visuals don't make up for its surface-level exploration of its themes. Check out what critics are saying below:

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’s Low Rotten Tomatoes Score Contradicts Cannes’ Positive Reviews
Image
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny seemed to have a triumphant premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday, with a six minute standing ovation and some positive first reviews on the night. However, as the first Rotten Tomatoes scores rolled in, it painted a much more mixed response to Harrison Ford’s final adventure as the aging Indy. While it is still early days, the consensus currently stands firmly in “rotten” territory with only half of the first wave of reviews having anything positive to say about the film.

Harrison Ford has seen many things during his four movies as Indiana Jones, and his fifth and final adventure is set to be no different with Nazis, time-travel and plenty of unbelievable stunts bringing the saga of Dr. Jones to a close. However, it seems that there are many who don’t feel that the James Mangold-directed movie...

‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’: What the Critics are Saying
Image
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday night. At the glitzy Palais screening, director James Mangold and stars Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Boyd Holbrook and Ethann Isidore enjoyed a warm five-minute standing ovation from the crowd. But it was Indy himself, Harrison Ford, who was the center of attention, with the actor visibly moved to tears by the reception.

Not soon after the premiere, the first reviews of the film, which hits theaters on June 30, came trickling in. As of late Thursday, the early critical reaction to the fifth film in the much-loved Indiana Jones franchise has been decidedly mixed.

A common theme among the early reviews is that the film is better than Indy’s last outing, the rather polarizing Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull from 2008, but not much better. Many reviewers took issue with digitally de-aging...

‘Beau is Afraid’ leaves critics shook: ‘Unhinged’ Joaquin Phoenix has ‘Big Cinema Energy pouring out of the screen’
Image
Ari Aster’s first two films, 2018’s “Hereditary” and 2019’s “Midsommar,” cultivated the young director enough cachet for A24 to hand him a blank check for “Beau is Afraid,” his “Jewish ‘Lord of the Rings’” about the psychological horror of visiting your mother. The three-hour horror-comedy epic is the indie studio’s most expensive movie to date. Starring Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix as the stunted and anxiety-ridden Beau of the title, the movie defies easy categorization and is, expectedly, inspiring awe and disgust in nearly equal measure – often within individual viewers.

Beau lives in an urban hellscape that approximates what “New York City looked like in the mind of Travis Bickle and Bernhard Goetz” and is in a persistent state of waiting for the other shoe to drop. When it finally does, it’s a chandelier on top of his mother’s head (it wouldn’t be an Aster film...

‘Air’ soars with critics: Ben Affleck’s film starring Matt Damon and Viola Davis ‘defies gravity and expectations’
Image
It’ll have been less than a month since the 95th Academy Awards when Ben Affleck’s “Air” hits theaters, but strong reviews suggest the time to begin predicting next year’s Oscars is already here.

Matt Damon heads the ‘80s-set workplace dramedy’s stellar ensemble as Sonny Vaccaro, a maverick talent scout for an apparel company that once celebrated unconventional thinking but, after going public, has increasingly frozen him out, focusing more on balance sheets than upending the status quo. Basketball players, Sonny is told over and over again, would much rather wear Converse and Adidas than Nike. Why doesn’t the company, based in Beaverton, Or, have offices on the east coast? What’s the use in a shoe that’s only good for a single activity? You can wear a running shoe for anything, even a trip to the grocery store. And what the hell is a Nike,...

‘Matilda the Musical’ rave reviews: ‘All-time great villain’ Emma Thompson gives ‘masterclass in caricature’
Image
“Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical” hit Netflix on December 25 to rave reviews. The musical fantasy starring Oscar winner Emma Thompson as Miss Agatha Trunchbull and Alisha Weir as the title character is based on the Broadway musical of the same name. The film is directed by Matthew Warchus with a script by Dennis Kelly. Warchus and Kelly brought the stage musical to Broadway in 2011 based on the 1988 novel by Roald Dahl.

The film currently holds a freshness rating of 92 on Rotten Tomatoes with the critics consensus reading, “Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical brings the classic story back to the screen with a delightful Emma Thompson, dazzling dancing, and a suitably irascible take on the source material.

10 Adam Sandler Movies The Critics Were Wrong About
Image
Adam Sandler recently opened up about the impact of reading negative reviews of his movies early in his career. Sandler said that he and his Billy Madison co-writer “read the first [review of the film] and we were like, ‘Oh my God, what happened? They hate us.’” Some of Sandler’s movies have been rightly praised, like Uncut Gems and Punch-Drunk Love, but critics often give his movies a harsh write-up as a knee-jerk reaction based on his involvement alone.

A few films from the Sandler oeuvre have been panned by critics when they deserved to be acclaimed, like his heartwarming father-son story Big Daddy and his infectiously sweet romcom 50 First Dates.

Mr. Deeds (2002)

Sandler’s Mr. Deeds reboot was nominated for three Razzies: Worst Actor for Sandler, Worst Actress for Winona Ryder, and Worst Remake or Sequel for the movie. This affable comedy about an everyman inheriting a fortune and using it...

Chris Pratt’s Mario Voice Baffles Fans After First Listen: ‘Holy S— It’s Literally Just Chris Pratt’s Voice’
Image
The trailer for Universal Pictures and Nintendo’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” has debuted, bringing with it a first listen of Chris Pratt’s Mario voice. The actor told Variety earlier this year that he “worked really closely with the directors” to craft the perfect Mario voice, adding, “[We tried] out a few things and landed on something that I’m really proud of.”

So what does Pratt’s Mario voice sound like? He only gets two brief lines of dialogue in the trailer, but it was enough to send social media into a craze with reactions. Many users found Pratt’s Mario voice too similar to Pratt’s own speaking voice, which led to confusion as the actor previously touted the voice as “unlike anything” fans had heard before.

“It’s an animated voiceover narrative,” Pratt added to Variety about the role. “It’s not a live-action movie. I’m...

After BAFTAs, watch out for Mike Faist (‘West Side Story’) at the Oscars
Image
Ever since Steven Spielberg’s magical adaptation of “West Side Story” first started screening last November, Mike Faist has slowly been gaining momentum for his charismatic, scene-stealing turn as Jets leader Riff. Critics were quick to single out Faist’s performance in the film’s already rave reviews. “A twitchy, wiry delight” hailed Robbie Collin of The Telegraph. “His dancing has a caffeinated, angular beauty”, wrote Stephanie Zacharek of Time Magazine. David Sims of The Atlantic concluded, “Faist’s sinewy, charged work as Riff is a real revelation”.

Critics groups quickly caught onto the buzz. Of the 20 regional circles that have chimed in since “West Side Story” started screening, Faist has received 10 nominations and nabbed a 3rd place prize at the National Society of Film Critics and a win at the Phoenix Critics Circle.

Despite a lack of wide visibility as well as screener issues inhibiting Faist’s momentum at...

The world premiere of “Belle”, the latest animated feature film from award-winning director Mamoru Hosoda, was met with cheers and a fourteen-minute standing ovation following its world premiere at the 74th Cannes Film Festival on Thursday July 15th – the seventh longest in the festival’s history. Critics responded with enthusiasm on Twitter following the premiere, with Phil de Semlyen calling it “a dazzling cyber fairy-tale”, and Robbie Collin adding that “there is usually one film per Cannes that emotionally bulldozes me, and this year Belle was it.”

Anime Limited, Europe’s premiere distributor for Japanese animation, will be releasing “Belle” in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and France.

“Belle”, the journey of a shy and self-conscious teenager finding herself through the avatar of a world famous virtual singer, is a film that reaches beyond borders both on and off the screen with a creative team showcasing the calibre of global talent in modern animation.
