During her chat with V magazine for the cover feature, the “Princess Diaries” star shared that in the 2000s, “it was considered normal to ask an actor to make out with other actors to test for chemistry. Which is actually the worst way to do it.

"You're like a fluffy piece of cotton candy with legs!" Netflix has revealed an official trailer for Thelma the Unicorn, an animated musical comedy from filmmakers Jared Hess & Lynn Wang. Made by Mikros Animation and Netflix Animation, along with Buzzfeed Studios, Matchbox Hero, Scholastic Entertainment. Thelma is a small-time pony who dreams of becoming a glamorous music star. In a moment of fate, Thelma is transformed into a unicorn and she instantly rises to global stardom, but this new life of fame comes at a cost. This animated comedy stars singer / songwriter Brittany Howard as the voice of Thelma, along with Will Forte, Jemaine Clement, Edi Patterson, Maliaka Mitchell, Ally Dixon, Fred Armisen, Zach Galifianakis, and Jon Heder. This looks way, way too similar to the Sing series of movies, with singing animals competing in competitions. Though I do like the plot in this being inspired by being fake (on...

Unicorns aren’t real, but if they were, is it so absurd to think they might be pop stars? After all, the classical depiction of a unicorn is fairly stage-ready: big eyelashes, plenty of glitter, iconic headwear. Who’s to say they wouldn’t be able to top the Billboard Hot 100?
In Thelma the Unicorn, that’s exactly what happens. The new animated comedy based on the popular children’s books by Aaron Blabey follows Thelma, a small-time pony with a big dream: to become a hit musician. And after a convenient visit from a glitter-and-paint trunk, she gets her wish — but is living as a unicorn really what Thelma wants? Voiced by Brittany Howard (of Alabama Shakes fame), Thelma sets out on a musical adventure that’ll have you tapping your feet (or hooves!) along with the beat.

Elliot Page criticized Canada’s rollback of LGBTQ rights on the stage of the Juno Awards in Halifax, Nova Scotia on Sunday night.
“We are at a time in history where the rights of LGBTQ2+ people are being revoked, restricted and eliminated throughout the world, and the effects are devastating,” Page, a transgender Halifax native, said in a speech presenting twin singer-songwriters Tegan and Sara with the Junos’ humanitarian award. Page praised the work of the Tegan and Sara Foundation for 2Slgbtq+ youth, supporting health care services to youth programs. Earlier in the week, he said at BFI Flare, London’s LGBTQ film festival, that “30% of young people identify as LGBTQ,” referring to a survey released earlier this year about Gen Z adults in the U.S. “So I’m sorry, but this is not niche.”

When a bunch of all-stars get together to record a song for a cause, the result can often be cringey. But “Tennessee Rise,” featuring the pulpit-ready voices of Brittany Howard, Allison Russell, Katie Pruitt, Amanda Shires, Fancy Hagood, Emmylou Harris, and more, hits all the marks.
The heavenly choir anthem was recorded to encourage Tennesseans to register and vote for Gloria Johnson, who is challenging Republican incumbent U.S. senator — and the state’s Darth Vader — Marsha Blackburn in the November election. Johnson is one of the lawmakers known as “The Tennessee Three,...

Allison Russell, Brittany Howard, Maren Morris, Brandi Carlile, Emmylou Harris, Brittney Spencer, Amanda Shires, and many others have formed a collective of country and Americana artists called the Tennessee Freedom Singers in support of Senate candidate Gloria Johnson. Together, they have released a new song called “Tennessee Rise” inspired by movements for social justice and equality. Stream it below.
Recorded at Sound Emporium Studio in Nashville, “Tennessee Rise” was masterminded by Russell after she found inspiration in the actions of Johnson, one of the Tennessee Three who was nearly expelled from the state’s House after participating in a gun control demonstration. Other artists who contributed to the song include Erin Rae, Katie Pruitt, Langhorne Slim, and Tré Burt, but the list goes on.

Brittany Howard appeared on The Tonight Show to showcase her recent single, “Prove It to You.” Performing with a live band and two back-up singers, the singer emphasized the psychedelic vibe of the track with smoke and a hazy rainbow backdrop.
Howard released “Prove It to You” last month ahead of her new LP, What Now, which dropped last week. She described the single as “a fun four-on-the-floor dance track that makes you want to dance but at the same time lyrically looked at the complexities of being in a relationship.

Brittany Howard’s career has been one of ever-expanding sonic exploration, from the nakedly retro rock ‘n’ soul of the Alabama Shakes’s Boys & Girls to the gleeful eclecticism of her solo debut, Jaime. Howard’s sophomore effort, What Now, finds her once again stylistically untethered, exploring funk-rock, psychedelia, techno, soft jazz, new age, and more. Sonically, it’s a triumph, a delicately textured musical realm that begs to be luxuriated in.
What’s missing from the album is the same level of songwriting that elevated Howard’s previous work. There are a few standout tracks, but no burrowing hooks on the level of “Don’t Wanna Fight” or “Stay High.” The only time she comes close to those earlier songs is on the propulsive “Red Flags,” its circular melody continuously building in intensity as Howard recounts a toxic relationship morphing from euphoria to abuse. Jazz drummer Nate Smith, the album’s sturdy backbone,...

Brittany Howard has one word to describe her feelings about 2024 so far. “Suspicious,” she says flatly as we lock eyes in agreement over Zoom. “Highly suspicious.”
It’s an attitude shared by many still adjusting to life post-2020 pandemic, which is when Howard first began working on her new sophomore solo album, What Now. Despite her skepticism about the world at large, the former Alabama Shakes blues rock band frontwoman is secure in her personal ventures, which include “The Brittany Howard What Now Tour” that kicked off in Chicago on Feb. 6, just three days before her Island Records debut releases.
“What Now is what the world felt like,” Howard says of the album title’s double meaning. “I remember somebody said it was like some aliens landed and people were just like, ‘I don’t care.’ It was just blow after blow of unprecedented things happening and trying to hang...

“The Route I’M Taking to being a farmer is ridiculous,” Brittany Howard says, sitting at the William Vale luxury hotel during her press trip to New York. She’s fantasizing about a potential future, one where she would maybe own a farm like the one she grew up on. It’s one of many ways she can see herself adding to the list of non-musical hobbies in her repertoire since 2020: fixing boats, fishing.
But don’t worry, music is still at the front of the former Alabama Shakes...

“I’ve been staying open, you don’t wanna grow,” Brittany Howard sings on the title track from her second solo record. The song is a hard-funk failing-relationship jeremiad that might leave the “you” in question reduced to a puddle on the floor by the time it’s done. But whoever she’s singing to should’ve known better. Staying relentlessly open has been Howard’s guiding principle going all the way back to her breakout moment fronting Athens, Alabama garage-rockers Alabama Shakes in the early 2010s.

Brittany Howard has shared another single, “Prove It to You,” ahead of her upcoming studio album What Now.
“My next song is one I’m really proud of,” Howard captioned a TikTok teasing the song last week. “It’s different than anything I’ve ever done but felt like a cornerstone of the new record. The band and I are excited to perform this one live for you all.”
On “Prove It to You,” which Howard co-produced with returning collaborator Shawn Everett, the Alabama Shakes singer goes full-on house. It’s backed by a chugging four-on-the-floor beat and a deep, heavy bass, as Howard takes on the persona of a disco diva: “Every time I try it comes out incomplete,” she sings, lamenting her inability to adequately express her love for her partner. “All I wanna do is prove it to you.”

Brittany Howard is back with “Red Flags,” the newest single from her upcoming album What Now. Additionally, she’s confirmed that the album will arrive on February 2nd, 2024 via Island Records.
If you’re the type to conveniently gloss over the signs of a romantic partner’s potential shortcomings, Howard can relate. On “Red Flags,” the Alabama Shakes singer comes to terms with a relationship’s inevitable demise: “The best time that I ever had/ That’s when the worst times started,” she sings over a soulful, futuristic beat.
“In my past relationships, I’ve had a tendency to see red flags as part of some parade just for me — something for me to run right through without paying any attention,” Howard explains in a press release. “To me ‘Red Flags’ sounds very dystopian, which makes sense for a song that feels like end-of-times as far as me emotionally maturing.

13 October 2023 – Brittany Howard, the five-time Grammy Award®-winning powerhouse shares the first single and video off her forthcoming solo album, What Now. The title track is a thriller of a song and offers a taste of what to expect on the full-length. “What Now” was written and produced by Brittany with co-production from Shawn Everett (Kacey Musgraves, Sza), with whom she has a longstanding creative relationship since Alabama Shakes. Recording took place at the legendary Sound Emporium and historic RCA Studio B in Nashville, Brittany’s hometown. The accompanying cinematic and action-packed video was directed by Danilo Parra (known for his work with A$AP Rocky) and produced by Adam Braun (070 Shake, P!Nk).

Track by Track is a recurring feature series in which artists guide readers through every song on their latest release. Today, Becca Mancari takes us through their latest record, Left Hand.
Becca Mancari returns today with their third full-length album, Left Hand. A collection of tracks journeying through love, queerness, family, and trauma, Left Hand may have been born from despair, but it always strives towards hope.
Over delicate, indie pop instrumentation, Mancari’s vocals imbue their songs with a certain vulnerability. On their follow-up to 2020’s The Greatest Part, they mine from their tumultuous relationship with their family, the harmful experiences from their past, and the grey area of reconciling with people who have hurt them, all while maintaining a tangible sense of love and empathy.
“I know for me, my mom getting cancer really made me stop and see her… even though she hurt me so badly when...
