Big news for fans of serial killers with hearts of gold:
A Dexter prequel series titled Dexter: Original Sin has been in development for some time, and earlier today, Showtime revealed the three talented stars who will portray the main members of the troubled Morgan family.
Irish actor Patrick Gibson -- best known for his work in period pieces like The Tudors and Shadow and Bone -- will be stepping into Michael C. Hall's shoes as the titular blood spatter analyst.
The role of Dexter's straightlaced sister Deb will be played by Molly Brown, and Christian Slater will portray the siblings' dad, Harry Morgan.
Original showrunner Clyde Phillips will return for the 10-episode prequel series.
The show is currently being framed as a limited series, but you know how these things go.
If it's a hit, it'll be renewed. Network execs love this low-risk, low-commitment appoach to new projects!

Christian Slater stars in a crime thriller series as the father of a mentally unwell young man who narrates his vigilante activities in a near-monotone voiceover.
Sounds familiar, right?
The Golden Globe-winning “Mr. Robot” star has signed on to Paramount+ with Showtime’s Dexter prequel series “Dexter: Original Sin” in a very similar role to the one he played on Mr. Robot. He’ll play Harry Morgan, Dexter’s adoptive father and a Miami homicide detective, the streaming service announced Thursday. James Remar played Harry in the original series.
“Shadow and Bone” actor Patrick Gibson will play Dexter Morgan, who in the prequel is beginning his career as a serial killer who kills other serial killers. He was played by Michael C. Hall in the original series. And “Senior Year” actress Molly Brown will play a young version of Dexter’s sister Debra Morgan, who was played in the original by Jennifer Carpenter.

A little over a year ago, Showtime announced that they were ordering a series – then known as Dexter: Origins, now known as Dexter: Original Sin – that would serve as a prequel series to their popular show Dexter, which finished its eight season initial run back in 2013, then recently came back for a new season (called Dexter: New Blood) that appeared to wrap things up for good… for the title character, anyway. Now Deadline reports that Patrick Gibson of Shadow and Bone has been cast to play a young Dexter Morgan in Dexter: Original Sin, with Christian Slater (Mr. Robot) joining him in the cast to play his dad, Harry Morgan, and Molly Brown (Senior Year) set to play Dexter’s younger sister, Debra Morgan.

Now, is this necessary? Showtime made it known in early 2023 that it wanted to expand its “Dexter” franchise with a sequel to 2021’s “Dexter: New Blood,” but this, pun fully intended, is overkill. Before that spinoff, another one arrives: “Dexter: Original Sin,” a ten-episode prequel series that centers on a young serial killer-in-training Dexter Morgan in early ’90s Miami. The series will premiere on Paramount+ with Showtime.

Jeff Ryan, Scott Cohen, Katerina Tannenbaum, Geneva Carr and Will Chase will star in “Mooch.” The crime comedy was also written and directed by Ryan, whose credits include “Mean Spirited” and “YouthMin.”
The filmmakers received an interim agreement to work on this independent production during last year’s SAG-Afrtra strike. It recently wrapped production in Lexington, Mass.
The movie focuses on a 30-year-old caddy named Shane (Ryan), who winds up with an unexpected gig as a personal private eye for a New Jersey nightclub owner. Even though he inches closer to realizing his ambitions, his personal life spirals out of control.
“When I was in high school, my friend’s dad told me I was going to fail in life because I was a ‘Mooch,’” said Ryan. “Making this film was a dream come true, and I am proud to put my dirty laundry on screen for all to enjoy.

Robert Douglas Spedden’s grave is located in his family plot, usually surrounded by freshly cut grass. The headstone is incredibly small and stub-like, so no matter how many times you’ve been to Brooklyn’s Green-Wood Cemetery, you’ve probably never noticed it before. You were maybe there to visit Leonard Bernstein, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Samuel Morse, or any of the other 600,000 graves.
Spedden was a child who survived the sinking of the Titanic, famously depicted in Francis Browne’s photograph, where he’s standing on the ship’s deck playing with a spinning top.

After twenty-five years, James Cameron’s Titanic is still one of the biggest-grossing films of all time (number 8 on the all-time domestic list and number 3 on the international list – not adjusted for inflation) and an indisputable classic. Everyone assumed Cameron’s movie would be a flop back in 1997, with many claiming it would be the next Waterworld or Heaven’s Gate before it opened. To rub salt in the wound, the movie opened soft opposite the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies, but then the movie displayed incredible staying power at the box office. This would become a recurring thing for Cameron, with Avatar: The Way of Water recently posting an underwhelming opening but then legging out to become one of the top ten highest-grossing movies of all time – and counting.

(To celebrate "Titanic" and its impending 25th-anniversary re-release, we've put together a week of explorations, inquires, and deep dives into James Cameron's box office-smashing disaster epic.)
In 1912, the Titanic -- a ship that was called "unsinkable" -- hit an iceberg and sank, killing over 1,500 of the souls onboard. Some of those people were well-known business magnates, authors, and company owners. Many of those celebrities (some of whom survived) appeared as on-screen characters in James Cameron's 1997 epic film "Titanic." Some of them include Molly Brown (called "The Unsinkable Molly Brown"), played by Kathy Bates, business tycoon John Jacob Astor IV (Eric Braeden), Colonel Archibald Gracie IV (Bernard Fox), a writer who penned a book about the disaster, Benjamin Guggenheim (Michael Ensign) the mining titan, Isidor Straus (Lew Palter) and his wife Ida (Elsa Raven), the former owner of R.H. Macy and Company, among many others.

Kathy Bates is most famous for her role as an unhinged, obsessed fan in "Misery," which won her an Academy Award, but the actress has portrayed many memorable characters in unforgettable films. She is the bored Southern housewife Evelyn Couch in "Fried Green Tomatoes," the boisterous "Unsinkable" Molly Brown in "Titanic," and the prim and proper Mrs. Givings in "Revolutionary Road." Plot: The Good House follows Hildy Good, a wry New England realtor and descendant of the Salem witches, who loves her wine and her secrets. Her compartmentalized life begins to unravel as she rekindles a romance with her old high-school flame and becomes dangerously entwined in one person’s reckless behavior. Igniting long-buried emotions and family secrets, Hildy is propelled toward a reckoning with the one person she’s been avoiding for decades: herself.

"It's okay to be angry and scared, and it's okay to ask for help." Roadside Attractions has revealed a trailer for an indie film called The Good House, which first premiered at the 2021 Toronto Film Festival last year. Based on Ann Leary's novel of the same name, this dramedy is about an aging New England realtor, named Hildy Good, who begins to unravel when she hooks up with an old flame of hers from New York. Kevin Kline co-stars as her old flame, while Sigourney Weaver takes on the role of Hildy. Igniting long-buried emotions and family secrets, Hildy is propelled toward a reckoning with the one person she has been avoiding for decades: herself. The cast also includes Morena Baccarin, Rob Delaney, David Rasche, Rebecca Henderson, Molly Brown, and Kathryn Erbe. This received mixed to negative reviews from TIFF, saying "the film is as messy as her character's behavior.

The Good House follows Hildy Good (three-time Oscar nom Sigourney Weaver), a wry New England realtor and descendant of the Salem witches, who loves her wine and her secrets. Her compartmentalized life begins to unravel as she rekindles a romance with her old high-school flame, Frank Getchell (Oscar winner Kevin Kline), and becomes dangerously entwined in one person’s reckless behavior. Igniting long-buried emotions and family secrets, Hildy is propelled toward a reckoning with the one person she’s been avoiding for decades: herself.

Spare parts of high school comedies from “Peggy Sue Got Married” to “Mean Girls” and beyond have been torn asunder, then sewn back together to create “Senior Year.” In other words, this vehicle for producer-star Rebel Wilson isn’t organic even as a genre homage; its Frankensteinian assemblage always feels more imitative than inspired. Nonetheless, if Alex Hardcastle’s effortfully high-spirited Netflix feature isn’t exactly good, it’s still .

I am not of fan of movies that resort to breaking the fourth wall, as it were, and letting their key characters talk incessantly to the audience. It is a device that generally feels lazy, a writer’s crutch to explain away story points instead of letting us discover for ourselves. The recent annoying pandemic comedy Together, with James McAvoy and Sharon Horgan as a bickering couple who sell their sides of ongoing marital arguments directly to the camera, is an example of why overuse of this technique can be so tired. Now along comes The Good House, which just premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, and where Sigourney Weaver as a functioning alcoholic real estate agent in North Boston offers her view on the town and its people with full sarcasm intact. It is based on the 2013 book by Ann Leary, and it seems this very literary conceit was...

In “The Good House,” Sigourney Weaver plays Hildy, a prickly, well-born Realtor in a wealthy New England town. Hildy is a mother and grandmother, and her family has become concerned with her drinking. When they stage an intervention, the beginning of which you can see in this exclusive clip, Weaver’s Hildy breaks the fourth wall, and tells the audience about the players.
“Let me introduce everyone first,” Hildy says to the camera. And then she does, peppering her comments with asides: “This is my ex-husband, Scott, to whom I pay alimony. Even though he left me for a man after 22 years of marriage.”
“The Good House,” an acquisition title produced by Amblin Partners, will premiere as a Gala Presentation at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sept. 15. Maya Forbes and Wallace Wolodarsky co-directed the film, and also adapted Ann Leary’s 2013 novel of the same name with Thomas Bezucha.

Paramount Players’ “Senior Year,” starring and produced by Rebel Wilson, has rounded out its supporting cast.
Jade Bender, Michael Cimino, Jeremy Ray Taylor and Avantika are among the actors joining the comedy, which stars Wilson as a woman who wakes up from a 20-year coma and returns to high school to try to regain her status as a popular cheerleader and claim the prom queen crown that eluded her.
Bender is best known for “Major Crimes” and will be next seen in the TV adaptation of “Night School,” while Cimino stars as Victor Salazar in Hulu’s “Love, Victor” (which debuted its second season last month to critical acclaim). TV’s 1979 Titanic movie comes to Blu in two versions. We liked it when new but didn’t care for the cut-down theatrical version that hit DVD in 2002. Kino’s disc completes a set of various film versions of the infamous 1912 disaster, and allows us the chance for a Titanic ‘battle of the bands’ — we’ll rate them from several criteria. The filmed-in-England production has a nicely-chosen soap opera cast: David Janssen, Cloris Leachman, Ian Holm, Helen Mirren, Anna Quayle, David Warner, Susan Saint James, Harry Andrews.

Even though Titanic was released over two decades ago, we've been able to glean fun behind-the-scenes details to this day; you know, like Matthew McConaughey auditioning to play Jack, and the fact that Celine Dion actually hated "My Heart Will Go On." Most recently, it was revealed that the character of American socialite and philanthropist "Unsinkable" Molly Brown - expertly portrayed by Kathy Bates - was originally offered to the one and only Reba McEntire! During a trivia game on Watch What Happens Live this week, the country music legend admitted that she was considered for the iconic role but had to turn it down due to prior touring commitments.
"We were on tour and I had a lot of people on the payroll, and we had these three months already scheduled to do the movie and then they got behind on scheduling," McEntire said. When asked if she regretted...

The Southend Film Festival celebrated its 10th year anniversary over the weekend and continued to show why it remains one of the most prestigious annual events in the UK for filmmakers. Delivering a strong diverse range of independent films specially selected for the festival, it gives the audience a unique opportunity to see films which they would not normally get to see on the big screen.
The festival creates an amazing atmosphere over the weekend with guests and filmmakers interacting by the bar between films. In fact, the only issues I had was the number of great films playing simultaneously, which often left me divided as to what I should watch. But with such a fantastic line up, whatever you chose you knew that you would not be left disappointed.

“It’s been 84 years….”
Actually, it’s been 20 years! James Cameron’s record-breaking blockbuster Titanic celebrates its 20th anniversary today and we know you’re frozen with excitement.
A chilling tale of romantic disaster, Titanic combines the fictitious love story of Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet) and Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio) with the untimely fate of the R.M.S. Titanic, one of history’s most famous ships.
Originally an elaborate plan to obtain funding for deep-sea filming expeditions, Cameron has stated that he made Titanic because he wanted to dive to the real wreck. As the writer, director, co-producer, and co-editor of the film, Cameron ended up spending more time with the ship than its actual passengers.
Filmed on a production budget of $200M, Titanic was the most expensive movie ever made at the time.
