Shastry Viruddh Shastry (streaming on Netflix)
Starring Paresh Rawal, Neena Kulkarni, Shiv Pundit, Mimi Chakraborty
Directed by Shiboprosad Mukherjee, Nandita Roy
Viacom 18 is fast acquiring the reputation of being producers who kill their own films, for reasons that are more fiscal than creative. They did it to the wonderful Dhak Dhak and now to Shastry Viruddh Shastry, a thoughtful if somewhat sluggish remake of a very successful Bengali film Posto.
The story of an unusual custody battle, Shatry Viruddh Shastry sees a 7-year old boy’s grandparents, played by Paresh Rawal and Neena Kulkarni who are no match to Soumitra Chatterjee and Lily Chakraborty in the original, fighting to keep their grandson with them.
Paresh plays a classical musician Manohar who along with his wife Urmila (Neena Kulkarni) looks after their grandchild Momoji (Kabir Pahwa) in Panchgani (the original film was set in Shantiniketan). When the child’s parents...

‘Shastry Virudh Shastry’ is the Hindi remake of the 2017 hit Bengali film ‘Posto’, also directed by Shiboprosad Mukherjee and Nandita Roy. A very contemporary and relevant story that checks all the right boxes about raising children, parents versus grandparents, the taboo of drinking, tradition versus modernity et al.
‘Shastry Virudh Shastry’ is about Malhaar Shastry (Shiv Panditt) and Mallika Shastry (Mimi Chakraborty), a hard working couple, chasing their dreams who get into a situation that unsettles their life. Soon, Malhaar gets a lucrative dream-come-true opportunity in the USA. The couple make up their mind to take the leap of faith and move abroad. So, what’s the fuss?
Their 7 year old son Yaman Shastry aka Momoji (Kabir Pahwa) has been living with his loving & caring grandparents Manohar Shastry (Paresh Rawal) & Urmila Shastry (Neena Kulkarni) since he was 3 months old. Malhaar’s father Manohar has reservations about allowing his grandson to move with his parents.

Actress and newly elected MP Mimi Chakraborty, whose jeans and shirt-clad look against the backdrop of Parliament House drew a backlash on social media, has called out trolls for ignoring cricketer Gautam Gambhir's casual photograph.
A scribe questioned on Twitter if the "fashion police" had attacked Gambhir, a Bjp MP from East Delhi, yet.
"Or only for the women? I think Gautam Gambhir is looking great," the scribe wrote.
It drew the attention of Mimi, who represented the Trinamool Congress in Jadavpur.
She commented: "No, they didn't ma'am. It's only because we are women probably, but Gautam Gambhir looks great."
Gambhir was dressed in a casual round neck t-shirt and held up his identification card to pose in front of the iconic parliament building.
Mimi's picture was widely circulated on the Internet as she posed alongside Nusrat, the Basirhat Trinamool Congress MP, who was dressed in fitted pants and a zipped peplum top.

Actors-turned-politicians Mimi Chakraborty and Nusrat Jahan's choice of Western wear for their first visit to Parliament after their victory in the Lok Sabha elections, was questioned by a section of social media users.
The two actresses contested the elections as Trinamool Congress representatives, and won by good margins.
Mimi, who contested from Jadavpur, uploaded a photograph in which she is seen posing in front of Parliament, wearing a white shirt and a pair of denims.
Nusrat, the Basirhat Trinamool Congress MP, opted for a wine coloured fitted ensemble -- a pair of pants with a peplum zipped top -- for her visit to Parliament.
These were far different from the saris and salwar suits that a lot of women politicians wear to Parliament.
One social media user commented: "Parliament is not a photo studio", while another user slammed Mimi saying "she is not suitable for the position".

The director duo Shiboprosad Mukherjee and Nandita Roy has become a household name in Bengal after their back-to-back hits “Belasheshe” and “Prakton”. But unfortunately, I didn’t get any chance to watch either of those movies and “Posto” was my first interaction with their directorial skills, and sadly, I am hugely disappointed with the treatment of this film. “Posto” has a powerful story line with a strong message that deals with an acute social problem. But with a poor narrative and theatrical directorial approach it ends up as a loud and melodramatic movie with a predictable climax and too many slippages from the directorial perspective.
Arnab (Jisshu Sengupta) and Sushmita (Mimi Chakraborty) are a working couple residing in Kolkata who decide to leave their only son Posto, with his grandparents Dinen (Soumitra Chatterjee) and Gauri (Lily Chakraborty) in Shantiniketan, as they could not give much time to...
