Seven more spots are up for grabs in the American Idol season 16 Top 14 as the second half of the Top 24 hits the stage, performing for a chance to earn America's vote when the live shows begin. It remains to be seen, however, exactly how much trust the reboot will put in viewers.
Back in the original final season, the judges moved four favorites -- Dalton Rapattoni, Olivia Rox, La'Porsha Renae and eventual winner Trent Harmon -- straight through before we sorted through the scrap heap to round out the Top 10 -- or, as I referred to it, handing out orange vests and ordering us to pick up most of the trash from the side of the highway.

Our American Idol “journey” has come to an end, but let us not weep for what’s been cancelled, let us instead go to iTunes and download the Season 15 winner’s new single. Hey, from a songwriting vantage point, it may not be “Home,” but it definitely ranks above “No Boundaries” and “Inside Your Heaven” — and we bought those, too. And if this show can produce one more bona fide radio/touring superstar, maybe the inevitable reboot will happen sooner than expected, no?

Update: Another white guy from the South has done it: Trent Harmon won Season 15, making him our final American Idol. Both Trent and La'Porsha were strong talents, and Trent earned his fan support, but that makes 10 male winners and only five female winners in the history of the series. Is it just coincidence? Were the men just that much better or did the demographic shift toward favoring men over the course of the series? Four of the five women (Kelly, Fantasia, Carrie, Jordin) won their seasons in the first six years, and then we fell into the white guys with guitars trope that was occasionally just white guys from the South or cute white guys from wherever. Point to ponder: If Kelly Clarkson competed on a season in the past five or six years, would she have won?

The final meaningful performances are now locked away in the annals of American Idol lore, and boy oh boy what a night it was. Dalton Rapattoni got to sell sing his coronation song before being sent on his merry way, and it was appreciated to get the crappy uninspired tunes over with first instead of closing the show with them. But then, it was game on between Trent Harmon and La'Porsha Renae. And even though I know who I think deserves to win, the competition is as close as it could be. And as such, it will be interesting to see who America chooses to bookend Kelly Clarkson as the 15th and final American Idol.

The night of Top 3 performances was an odd bird as far as The Farewell Season goes, because there were some spectacular performances mixed in with a collection of bizarre choices. Trent Harmon excelled on three songs I'm not familiar with, including one that no one has ever heard, while MacKenzie came up short with something that has been sung literally every season on American Idol. Dalton Rapattoni used songs I know to turn in one of the best and one of the worst of the evening, and La'Porsha Renae rode an air of inauthenticity to the top spot in the rankings. Scott Borchetta and the judges were hit or miss in their selections, which rank as the top three and bottom three performances in a night full of quality vocals but lacking in memorable moments.

American Idol narrowed the top 8 down to a top 6 on Thursday's hard-fought episode - where one contestant found redemption after fumbling early in the episode. Warning: Spoilers ahead.Idol's top 8 started off with duets - and it was a very rocky start for Dalton Rapattoni and MacKenzie Bourg, who got dinged for their choice of Backstreet Boys' "I Want It That Way." (It's a bad sign when the first words out of Harry Connick Jr.'s mouth are, "I do not think that was a good song.") We're loving @mackenziebourg and @DaltonRapattoni's take on @backstreetboys' "I Want It That Way.

After all these years, American Idol is still pretty much my favorite thing on television, and yet I nevertheless spent the last seven days filled with unspeakable dread about this week’s performance show.

There are several genuinely talented vocalists left in the show’s Farewell Season, but producers are structuring weekly results announcements in a way that creates unnecessary anxiety and hampers the quality of performances. At least that’s what my cohost Melinda Doolittle and I argue on this week’s episode of Reality Check. Oh, and did I mention our resident Idol grad has a perfectly elegant solution to the situation?

American Idol honored the Grammy Awards on Thursday – and at least one contestant proved they have what it takes to eventually win one of those coveted awards!
Warning: Spoilers ahead.
It wasn't a stellar night for all of the Idol Top 10 – early frontrunner Dalton Rapattoni faltered for the first time with a performance of Imagine Dragon's "Radioactive" – but no one could deny MacKenzie Bourg was a standout of the evening.

I’m not going to kvetch about American Idol failing to reward one of its dozens of worthy grads with a Thursday-night performance slot — there are only six weeks left, after all! — and instead using it to promote the doing-just-fine-already former X Factor judge Demi Lovato.

In Thursday night’s episode of American Idol, the aging reality series showed why it’s a shell of what it once was. The series announced the final 10 contestants in its final season: MacKenzie Bourg, Trent Harmon, Gianna Isabella, Lee Jean, Tristan McIntosh, Dalton Rapattoni, La’Porsha Renae, Olivia Rox, Sonika Vaid and Avalon Young. Four of the contestants were unanimously chosen by the judges last night — Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr. — and the remaining six were chosen by America’s votes. But the best moment of the night was when Season 1 winner Kelly Clarkson brought America … Continue reading →

I may not have grown up under the Common Core Standards, but I know enough math to figure out the following simple equation:
There are six weeks left of American Idol‘s Season 15. There are seven weeks left of Kelly Clarkson’s pregnancy. If Fox and 19 Entertainment spring for a luxury Rv to transport the original Idol winner to and from Hollywood every Thursday between now and the April 7 finale, there is no reason whatsoever she can’t upgrade this rollercoaster of a Farewell Season with her sweetly rambling, stream-of-consciousness, heartfelt and honest critiques. (And the occasional emotionally devastating performance.

After waiting a few extra weeks, viewers finally got to vote on American Idol: The Farewell Season as 10 of the Top 14 hit the stage to perform for one of six spots in the Top 10. The big problem was the fact that the judges took the four best singers out of the mix, and the show suffered immensely as a result. Dalton Rapattoni, Olivia Rox, Trent Harmon and La'Porsa Renae got "fast passes" to the next round, and with a terrible "best of the season" theme that basically meant "sing something again," moments were few and far between or just non-existent.

There comes a time every year when Americans are able to exercise their right to vote. No, I'm not talking about political elections, but rather American Idol! For the first time this season, viewers were able to make a difference in the competition. Did you vote? Because like with elections, if you didn't, you can't complain about the results.
After the judges sent Dalton Rapattoni, Olivia Rox, Trent Harmon and La'Porsha Renae into the Top 10, the remaining 10 singers performed for our votes. Six of them will also join the Top 10, while the other four are heading home.
