Streaming Along: Revisiting The Best Crime Drama On Ott – Undekhi
Image
For those who came in late, Applause Entertainment’s Undekhi on SonyLIV, is about the arrogance of wealth. This affliction makes the Atwal family believe no law of the land is applicable to their lives.

The arrogance of unlimited wealth is on full display as the Atwal family prepares in scenic Manali for the Big Fat ‘Greed’ Wedding of their heir apparent Daman to his girlfriend Teji (Anchal Singh), who before the series clambers to a kickass climax, will display unexpected pluck in taking on her socio-pathic in-laws. More of the same, and yet at the top of the game…That just about sums up the second season of 2020’s well-played cat-and-mouse crime thriller about a super-rich wedding, a murder, and the affluent arrogance of a family that thinks crime is the only way to stay wealthy.

It’s a world where people get shot randomly, remorselessly. The patriarch of...

Movie Review | Shehzada: Family entertainer of the season
Image
Kartik Aaryan starrer ‘Shehzada’ is an action-packed family entertainer, a remake of the Allu Arjun starrer 2020 Telugu film ‘Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo’. Shehzada has elements of everything from romance to drama, comedy to emotion and lots of Kartik’s swag. Kartik Aaryan is rapidly taking strides stepping into larger shoes and tasting super success with films like Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 (Akshay Kumar), Allu Arjun’s character in Shehzada and also Salman Khan in the ‘Character Dheela’ song in Shehzada. No wonder he is a darling of the teens. With this film Kartik could earn the moniker as Bollywood’s ‘Shehzada’ (Prince) after having a ‘Badshah’ (Shah Rukh Khan) and a Shahenshah (Amitabh Bachchan).

Plot

A nurse informs birth of two baby boys – one of Randeep (Ronit Roy), a millionaire business tycoon and another of Valmiki (Paresh Rawal), Randeep’s friend and now an employee. The babies are exchanged and only two people are witness to this.

“From the first frame to last Kartik Aaryan Shines In Shehzada” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
Shehzada

Directed by Rohit Dhawan

From the first frame to the last, Kartik Aaryan has himself a blast. He makes sure we forget the original as he launches into a celebration of pure tomfoolery.

The original Telugu film Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo was very 1980s in theme. Writer-director Rohit Dhawan retains the flavour and energy of the original allowing Kartik Aaryan plenty of room to improvise. Kartik elbows out nearly all the characters. Except for Paresh Rawal, who plays the scummiest father on this earth, and not the least embarrassed about it. The rest of the characters are a blur in Kartik’s showmanship.

He is required to be a one-man show and still hold the show together. The orchestra conductor’s avatar suits him well. He is effective in both the comic and melodramatic moments.

Rohit Dhawan’s direction is fuelled by bombast. He creates a world that his father the...

“Inside Edge 3 Is Still Edgy & Engrossing” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
Inside Edge Season 3(Amazon Prime Video, 10 Episodes)

For fans of the cricketing franchise that kicked off in 2017, Inside Edge is still likely to hold some interest, no ifs and ‘bats’ about it.

Batting and betting remain the series’ patent preoccupations. The characters, all 155 of them(no I wasn’t counting, just guessing) remain locked in a self-serving vault where they can only see the world asa place to mint money, and more money. Sporting ethics be damned.

The ten episodes of Season 3 have their high points. But the low points sadly exceed the high. There are many loose ends in the plot: for example, why is Richa Chadha(who gets top billing) missing in the first 5 episodes? Even after she makes a belated entry her character Zarina Mehta seems uncertain about her presence and her future. Flashbacks of her mother’s humiliation as a junior artiste are too perfunctory to...

Ankur Rathee, Jim Sarbh shared ‘mischievous’ vibes while shooting Taish!
Ankur Rathee
Actor Ankur Rathee has an interesting anecdote recalling his experience of working with Jim Sarbh.

Ankur played Jim's brother in Bejoy Nambiar's recent release, "Taish", which dropped digitally as a web series as well as a film.

"In rehearsals, we would think of something mischievous, smile at each other and throw the scene on its feet and test it out! Such exploration continued on set. We would constantly go off script, and as Bejoy kept rolling we would bounce off each other's absurd impulses. Jim reminded me that in our search for authenticity and spontaneity we can have so much fun," said Ankur.

It has been an eventful year for him so far, having worked with filmmakers like Anubhav Sinha, Nagesh Kukunoor and Bejoy Nambiar. The common factor among these creative artistes, he says, is that they welcome new ideas.

Ankur worked in Sinha's critically-acclaimed "Thappad" besides Bejoy Nambiar's "Taish...

“Taish Is Stunning, Brilliant and Picture-perfect” -A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
Taish (Zee5)

Starring Harshvardhan Rane, Jim Sarbh, Pulkit Samrat, Sanjdeeda Sheikh, Kriti Kharbanda

Directed by Bijoy Nambiar As I finished watching this lengthy masterpiece, indeed a masterclass in adroit storytelling with room for every character to breathe even when they are destined to die, I thought not for the first time… Oh Frog, what am I doing watching this at home???!!!

Taish is a big-screen experience in every sense: big emotions, big egos, big fights, big vendetta, big screams, big silences…This is the kind of internecine vista of continuous bloodshed and vendetta that would end up being no more than an exercize in gratuitous violence in lesser hands. Not Bejoy Nambiar. I’ve watched his work closely and admired it since he started with Shaitaan.

Today Nambiar has leapt far ahead of his mentor Anurag Kashyap. Taish is proof of it. It is so sinfully engaging that I couldn...

Bejoy Nambiar: ‘Taish’ brings a sense of double pressure
Bejoy Nambiar
Filmmaker Bejoy Nambiar is excitedly looking forward to the audience reaction to his latest effort.

Bejoy Nambiar's upcoming project, the revenge drama "Taish", releases on Thursday in the form of a feature film as well as web series. This is an unprecedented experiment in Indian showbiz.

"With every new release, the count of butterflies in my stomach increases, and right now I feel tensed, eager to know what the audience feels. There is a sense of double pressure because we are releasing 'Taish' in two formats, as a full-length feature film and as a web series. Both formats have their target audience. Having said that, there is relief because there is no weekend collection and box office pressure," the filmmaker told Ians.

"Also, in the film we have tried to touch upon a topic that hasn't been done in films before, so I am interested to know how people connect with it,...

Undekhi is No One Killed Jessica meets Damini with an excellent mix of fact & fiction – Exclusive Review
Image
What a time it is turning out to be the world of Indian web series on the Ott platform. Considering this is the lockdown period, thankfully the ones which are deserving are indeed finding quite some eyeballs and attention for themselves. Undekhi is one such web series that spreads across 10 episodes and turns out to be such an engaging dramatic thriller that you don’t have a choice but to binge watch it from start to finish.

Inspired by the true events from a few years back when during a celebratory event a drunk man shot a female dancer from a close range, hence taking her life, Undekhi covers a lot more distance than what the premise may suggest. An excellent mix of fact & fiction, it goes beyond picking up from the headlines that stunned the nation and actually brings to fore the sheer audacity of a section of rich...
