Stars: Mads Mikkelsen, Maria Thelma Smáradóttir | Written by Joe Penna, Ryan Morrison | Directed by Joe Penna
Arctic, directed by Joe Penna, stars Mads Mikkelsen as Overgård (but you won’t really know that in the film) an airline pilot who’s thrust into a life and death situation after his plane crashes and he is stricken alone in the arctic wilderness, with little hope for rescue or survival.
Penna’s film is a broodingly intense and gripping ride with a formidable leading performance from Mikkelsen who utterly conquers the screen with little character and sheer emotive physicality, but the films repetitive nature and predictable story lets down an otherwise strong feature.
Undoubtedly the highlight here is the performance of Mads Mikkelsen. The film rests solely on his shoulders, of course, due to him being essentially the only character present, with the fact that this is arguably a silent film that...

Director: Joe Penna. Writers: Joe Penna, Ryan Morrison. Cast: Mads Mikkelsen, Maria Thelma Smáradóttir. Arctic is a survival drama from first time feature filmmaker Joe Penna. Also written by Ryan Morrison, Arctic has recently shown at this year's Victoria Film Festival. This is the twenty-fifth year for the film festival. One of their biggest draws this year was this survivalist feature, which prominently featured Mads Mikkelsen as the stoic character Overgard. Filmed in Iceland, Arctic involves a cargo plane and a crash. Other rescuers try to help out, but more tragedy strikes. This film is very much a survival drama or survival thriller, with Overgard doing his best to escape an inhospitable landscape. Very sombre in tone, Arctic moves along at a decent pace. However, this is very much a minimalist feature. There are only two actors here and very little dialogue. So, Arctic is for those with a bit of patience,...

With the Sundance Film Festival coming to a close, Oscar nominations out and Specialty distributors looking ahead, this weekend will have more new limited releases than the last few, post-holidays weekends. Bleecker Street is opening Joe Penna’s Arctic starring Mads Mikkelsen as a man stranded near the North Pole following a plane crash. The Orchard is opening The Unicorn by Robert Schwartzman, who hosted an event at Sundance last weekend. Starring Nick Rutherford who also co-wrote, The Unicorn will head out to theaters this weekend before going on-demand next week. The ‘widest’ Specialty roll out on this continent this weekend will be Bollywood’s Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga from Fip, which will take the title by director Shelly Chopra Dhar to 192 locations in North America. And Danish filmmaker Mads Brügger was at the Sundance Film Festival with doc Cold Case Hammarskjöld, but the director has also...

Atmosphere-driven survival sagas have been on something of a roll lately, what with the new cinematic physicality that has turned the vastness of space (“Gravity”), another planet (“The Martian”) and the sea (“All Is Lost”) into arenas for both great acting and the most immersive kind of experiential distress.
The forbidding emptiness of an icy wasteland had to be next, and for that we have Brazilian filmmaker Joe Penna to thank. Penna’s feature debut “Arctic” casts Mads Mikkelsen as a pilot stranded in the titular tundra, battling the elements, loneliness, and a high-risk effort to save his own life and another’s. And though it’s not anything new in terms of dramatic representation, in its solidly visceral execution — stressing a belief in filmmaking’s basic tools of storytelling that’s almost refreshing — it earns its place among the genre’s stalwarts. You will believe a man can freeze.

"We'll take a better way." Umbrella Entertainment + Sbs have released another official international trailer (from Australia) for the survival thriller Arctic, the feature debut of filmmaker Joe Penna. We featured the first trailer for this just a week ago, and this new one has a few shots of extra footage. This premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last year and it's one of the best survival movies I've ever seen. I saw this at Cannes (read my review) and really loved it, and even though there have been plenty of terrific survival films over the years, this landed on the top of my list as one of the best. Mads Mikkelsen stars as the survivor of a plane crash in the arctic. The film also features Maria Thelma Smáradóttir as a helpless young woman he tries to save. This was filmed mostly in Iceland, and features a really wonderful score by composer Joe Trapanese.

Continuing with Mads Mikkelsen day here at Quiet Earth, one of the other movies starring the great Dane which is coming out this year is the survival thriller Arctic.
The feature film debut of Brazilian director Joe Penna, Arctic stars Mikkelsen as a man stranded in, what I assume from the from the title and the landscape, the Arctic with a woman who is badly injured.
The pair appears to be either the sole survivors or sole occupants of a downed plane who have been in the elements for some time and the woman is not doing so well. Mikkelsen decides the best course of action for survival is to travel across the snow to what appears to be either a station or settlement.
Icelandic actress Maria Thelma Smáradóttir co-stars.

"She's running out of time... I have to find help." Bleecker Street Films has debuted the first official trailer for survival thriller Arctic, the feature debut of filmmaker Joe Penna. This premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last year and it's one of the best survival movies ever made. Yes, seriously. It truly is. I first saw this at Cannes (read my review) and really loved it, and even though there have been plenty of terrific survival films over the years, this one jumps to the top of the shortlist as a realistic, enthralling, emotional, gripping film about the incredible strength it takes to survive in the cold. Joe Penna, who became one of YouTube’s earlier stars thanks to an ingenious mix of animation, stop motion, visual effects, and music on his Mystery Guitar Man channel (2.8 million subscribers), is transitioning into the world of feature filmmaking with wondrous ease.
After his directorial debut, Arctic, was named an ‘Official Selection’ at this year's Cannes Film Festival, Deadline reports that indie studio Bleecker Street has acquired North American and select international distribution rights for the piece. Prior to its Cannes debut, Paris-based Backup Media had acquired multi-territory rights to the survival thriller in France, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, per Variety.

It doesn’t take long for Joe Penna’s “Arctic” to establish itself as one of the best movies ever made about a man stranded in the wilderness. In fact, there’s a small but crystalline moment in the first act when this hellishly cold portrait of human endurance claws ahead of the pack and never looks back.
The context is easy to describe — the conflict frozen across Mads Mikkelsen’s face is not. The Danish star, throwing himself into an Iceland shoot that could probably make for a compelling survival story unto itself, plays a downed pilot named Overgård. The nearly wordless film starts at some point after his plane has crashed into a deep white valley in the middle of nowhere. It’s hard to pinpoint when exactly the accident took place, but it’s obvious that our hero has been out there for longer than most of...

First-time director Joe Penna co-wrote the script with Ryan Morrison, who also edited the film. Maria Thelma Smáradóttir (“Prisoners“) also stars. The film offers vast, forbidding images of the frozen mountains of the Arctic, and Mikkelsen is the core of the movie, as a man drawing on vast inner reserves in his desire to survive, but also demonstrating moral courage in seeking to save a fellow survivor.
Producers are Chris Lemole and Tim Zajaros of Armory Films, who also financed, and Noah C. Haeussner of Union Entertainment Group. Martha De Laurentiis, Manu Gargi and Einar Thorsteinsson are executive producers.
The deal was negotiated between Kent Sanderson and Avy Eschenasy on behalf of Bleecker Street with CAA Media Finance and UTA for U.S. rights with Xyz handling international sales on behalf of the filmmakers.
