It looks as though director Todd Phillips has officially finished Joker: Folie a Deux, with the MPAA officially granting it an R-rating for “some strong violence, language throughout, some sexuality, and brief full nudity.” On the latter, it looks like Joker is about to show us the full monty, doesn’t it? At any rate, the R-rating isn’t a surprise, as that’s what the first film got, and I imagine a PG-13 sequel would have landed with a thud, as fans expect this to be as hardcore and uncompromising as the original.

During the Warner Bros. panel at CinemaCon, Todd Phillips addressed the crowd, saying that the response to 2019’s Joker blew him away. People said the film was “dangerous.” He’s thankful the movie wasn’t scrapped and became a box-office smash.
When he was making the first movie, he and Joaquin always talked about making a sequel, but they didn’t want to jinx it. They talked a lot about the pandemic, and that’s how it was born. But it’s a very different kind of sequel.
Phillips was a producer on A Star Is Born, and he and the writer always wrote this with Lady Gaga in mind. As far as it becoming a musical, Phillips said he never thought of it as one, but he admits music is an essential element. He said he always described...

A Joker sequel was never technically in the cards. When director Todd Phillips made his anti-superhero origin film about the classic Batman villain — with Joaquin Phoenix in the title role — it was designed to be a standalone film. While Phillips acknowledged he was open to making a follow-up under the right circumstances, he went so far as to stress a month before the film’s October 2019 release: “We have no plans for a sequel … The movie’s not set up to [have] a sequel. We always pitched it as one movie,...

When it was revealed that Joker: Folie à Deux would have elements of a musical, fans weren’t quite sure how far the sequel would lean into that aspect. Well, according to Variety, the film will be “mostly a jukebox musical” as it will include “at least 15 reinterpretations of very well-known songs.“
Insiders tell Variety that one of those songs is said to be “That’s Entertainment” from the 1953 musical The Band Wagon. While it seems that most of the songs will be covers of existing tunes, the door is apparently open for the addition of an original song or two. Who would have thought that Joker: Folie à Deux might be joining the likes of musicals such as Mamma Mia and Moulin Rouge?

Even archvillains need love. To celebrate Valentine’s Day, Joker: Folie à Deux director Todd Phillips offered three photos featuring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga in character, adding the caption: “Hoping your day is full of love.”
An official trailer for the Joker follow-up is expected in mid-April, Phillips noted in the comments. The Warner Bros film is currently scheduled for an October release.

Lawrence Sher, the Oscar-nominated cinematographer for “Joker,” revealed on “The Trenches Talk” podcast that he “never even met” Lady Gaga on the set of the sequel, “Joker: Folie à Deux,” because she was presumably in character the whole time (via IndieWire). Gaga stars opposite returning lead Joaquin Phoenix in the 2024 comic book movie, which casts her as Harley Quinn opposite Phoenix’s Joker. Sher said it wasn’t until he started calling Gaga by the name “Lee” (presumably a nod to Harley) that she even warmed up to him.
“I didn’t know Stefani at all,” Sher said referring to Gaga’s real name, Stefani Germanotta. “Strangely, I felt like I never even met her, even during the makeup/hair tests. Maybe it was my philosophy of not trying to get in their space. And then I remember for a week, being like, ‘God, I feel like we are disconnecting.

Lady Gaga is up to her usual Method acting tricks again, again, according to “Joker: Folie à Deux” cinematographer Lawrence Sher.
In a recent podcast interview circulated online, Sher said Lady Gaga’s assistant director asked that she be called “Lee” during the production, and that suddenly changed the dynamic of the set.
“I didn’t know Stefani at all,” he said, referring to the “Fame Monster” icon’s born name, “Stefani Germanotta.” “Strangely, I felt like I never even met her, even during the makeup/hair tests. Because again, maybe it was my philosophy of not trying to get in their space. And then I remember for a week, being like, god, I feel like we are disconnecting. Not even connecting. We are like on opposites. And I would say to my crew, ‘Jesus, I can’t, like, crack it. She either hates me or we hate each other.

I doubt many were suspecting that Joker would become a billion-dollar box-office smash, and it sounds like the upcoming sequel will be just as surprising, just for a different reason. While speaking with Variety at the Tribeca Film Festival, Zazie Beetz teased that the Joker sequel won’t be what fans are expecting.
“I think people will be surprised. I don’t think it’s going to be what they expect, around it being musical,” Zazie Beetz said. “We all sort of express musically and dancing in our lives day-to-day. I think it’s going to work really well.” Beetz played Sophie Dumond in the first Joker movie, a love interest for Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix), and has reprised the role for Joker: Folie à Deux. Plot details for the Joker sequel are being kept under wraps, but it’s been said that much of it will take place within Arkham Asylum,...

“Joker: Folie à Deux” promises to be a bigger, crazier, and much more musical addition to the “Joker” universe — but Lady Gaga did her best to stay grounded while transforming into the unhinged psychiatrist Harley Quinn. Her co-star Zazie Beetz has nothing but good things to say about Gaga’s performance in Todd Phillips’ follow-up to his Oscar-winning 2019 film.
“She’s super warm and kind,” Beetz told Variety of Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta. “I felt very welcome with her on set. She was doing her own character work and stuff, but she’s a very grounded person. She’s just Stefani.”
Beetz teased that fans will be “surprised” at how the musical sequel unfolds.

Few literary figures have achieved the same kind of pop culture afterlife as Edgar Allan Poe. Much like Franz Kafka, the idea of Poe has become conflated with the writer's most famous works: The tragic, haunted figure, scribbling away feverishly by candlelight, only pausing occasionally to fling open the shutters of his window and gaze out into the night beyond with fear and trepidation.
This romantic notion makes Poe an intriguing character who has carried well into other mediums. There are hundreds of comics based on the author and/or his works (even teaming up with the Dark Knight in "Batman: Nevermore"), as well as stage plays, radio shows, books, and, of course, movies. The controversial master of silent cinema, D.W. Griffith, directed the first film based on the author, "Edgar Allan Poe," back in 1909, and actors including Joseph Cotton, Klaus Kinski, and Ben Chaplin have all played the gloomy author on screen.

Los Angeles, April 3 (Ians) Singer-actress Lady Gaga is making use of her vocals for her role in ‘Joker: Folie a Deux’.
The 13-time Grammy Award winner has shown off her singing prowess as she filmed the movie in New York City, reports aceshowbiz.com.
Over the weekend, the 37-year-old was seen shooting scenes for the sequel at a familiar place. She was photographed at the same staircase where Joaquin Phoenix’s titular character boogied down in the 2019 film.
In pictures and videos taken by onlookers, Gaga was walking the iconic staircase connecting Shakespeare and Anderson avenues at West 167th Street in the Bronx. As she ascended the graffiti-laced staircase, she busted a few moves. Joker: Folie Deux is deep into production now, filming across Los Angeles, New Jersey, and New York City. It’s in the Big Apple that we’re finally getting our first look at Lady Gaga‘s Harley Quinn costume and makeup, thanks to quite a few photos leaked from the set.
Unsurprisingly, the Joker-verse take on the classic Batman villain has a slightly more stripped down, grounded look. You likely won’t get Lady Gaga running around Gotham City in a full-on red, black, and white motley in this movie but the costume does at least retain the character’s original color scheme introduced in Batman: The Animated Series.

The family of Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya has said an upcoming film inspired by her life is “grossly inaccurate” and misrepresents her work in a statement sent to journalists Tuesday afternoon.
In the statement, the family said it is “very concerned” by the film’s preliminary script, which they say contains “significant inaccuracies” and misrepresents Anna’s life, work, and family.
The film, previously titled Mother Russia, tells Anna’s story as a world-renowned journalist and human rights activist who went from being a local print journalist to braving the Chechen killing fields and exposing Russian state corruption under Vladimir Putin.
Anna refused to give up reporting on the war in Chechnya despite numerous acts of intimidation and violence, including being poisoned. She was ultimately murdered in the elevator of her block of flats, and it remains unclear who paid for the contract killing.
BAFTA-nominee Maxine Peake (The Village) plays Anna in the biopic.

Time to put on a happy face. Joker: Folie a Deux is now in production, currently filming in downtown Los Angeles. Star Joaquin Phoenix is in town, and back in the heavy makeup, but he’s not the only clown in town. And we’re not talking about Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn.
The first footage and photos leaking out of the LA set show a total of three Jokers running around the city streets for a chase sequence involving a pursuit on foot as well as several patrol vehicles crashing into things. You can check out the scene being filmed below from several angles…

What makes us care about the characters in a television show? It’s a strange relationship we have with them, an unfamiliarity that turns into something akin to family. Soon enough, you’re a Soprano or a Simpson, part of the Brady bunch or in with the Ewing clan. And then TV can play its great emotional trick: it can put these characters through tragedy and triumph, and make the viewer feel that it’s theirs. This is the well-worn pathway that You & Me, the new Itvx three-part drama, forswears. Instead, we are dropped into a world and asked to care, straight away, when things begin in media misery.
“I don’t want to tell a sad story,” Ben (Industry’s Harry Lawtey) tells up-and-coming actress Emma (The End of the F***ing World’s Jessica Barden). “I don’t want them to be a sad story.” He’s talking...

U.K. streamer Itvx has released a trailer for three-part drama “You & Me.”
Harry Lawtey (“Industry”), Jessica Barden (“The End of the F***ing World”) and Sophia Brown (“The Witcher: Blood Origin”) star in writer and creator Jamie Davis’ contemporary love story.
The series is produced by Happy Prince, part of ITV Studios, and executive produced by Dominic Treadwell-Collins (“A Very English Scandal”), Alexander Lamb (“We Hunt Together”) and Russell T. Davies (“It’s A Sin,” “Doctor Who”).
Lawtey plays Ben, a young northerner in London who finds his life changed forever when catastrophe strikes on the happiest day of his life. Barden plays Emma, a rising theater star who hides tragedy behind her success and Brown plays Jess, a young woman whose life takes an unexpected turn when she’s running for a bus. You’ve got to hand it to Joker director Todd Phillips. The man proved himself to be an incurable romantic today by celebrating Valentine’s Day on Instagram with a first-look image of Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix in character in the upcoming Joker: Folie à Deux. Check it out:

As befits the romantic day, in the Joker sequel, Lady Gaga plays Dr. Harleen Quinzel, who is better known as Harley Quinn, who, as we all know, is the Joker’s one true (tortured) love. Gaga’s participation in the sequel has sent anticipation levels skyrocketing, with many believing it might be an even bigger hit than the wildly successful original. Joker: Folie à Deux is not the great Gaga’s first time working with Phillips, with him having produced A Star is Born. The film also reunites...

“Happy” Valentine’s Day? Filmmaker Todd Phillips has shared a first-look photo of Lady Gaga in character as Harley Quinn, the Clown Prince of Crime’s longtime love interest.
The Oscar winner will be starring in “Joker: Folie à Deux,” the Warner Bros. sequel set to be released on October 4, 2024. Plot details on the sequel to the 2019 film — for which Joaquin Phoenix won the Oscar for Best Actor — remain scarce. It’s said to be a musical film centered around the Arkham Asylum and its inhabitants — with cast including Zazie Beetz (returning from her seemingly hallucinated Arthur Fleck neighbor from the 2019 film), “Banshees of Inisherin” Oscar nominee Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener in a secret role, Jacob Lofland as an Arkham Asylum inmate, “Industry” breakout Harry Lawtey, and more.

There’s a chance Tom Hardy and Zazie Beetz will team up to star in Lazarus, a serial killer drama series in early development at Apple TV+. I said, “there’s a chance” because the project is, technically, “nearing development,” according to Deadline. In other words, the ink still needs to be dry, and deals are still in the works. Lazarus is a co-production between A+E Studios and Range Studios, with plans to sell the package to Apple.
Based on the Joona Linna book series by Lars Kepler (pseudonym for Alexandra Coelho Ahndoril and Alexander Ahndoril), Lazarus gives off The Silence of the Lambs vibes while telling a dark tale about murder and a search for the truth.
Here’s a description of Lars Kepler’s Lazarus via Deadline‘s exclusive report:
In the series, an emaciated young man is found wandering along a train track. Thirteen years earlier, he and his sister went missing,...

“I remember the first time I heard of Poe was on a ‘Simpson’s’ episode,” recalls Harry Melling, with a smile, of how he learned about the famed American writer Edgar Allan Poe. In director Scott Cooper’s new Netflix film “The Pale Blue Eye,” the actor takes on the challenge of portraying the iconic poet and short-story writer. While he remembers having previously read “The Tell-Tale Heart,” he explored “most of” the works in Poe’s vast catalogue to prepare. He relied most heavily on the early poem “Tamerlane,” which he says “gave me a real insight into how he saw himself as a very intellectual poet.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
To tackle the daunting task of playing such a towering figure of American literature, Melling dug into research. He shares that he initially felt, “I need to read everything. I need to read as much as possible,...
