Saoirse Ronan has joined the cast of the satirical comedy ‘Bad Apples,’ which marks the English language debut of Swedish writer-director Jonatan Etzler.
The film tells the story of Maria (played by Ronan), a primary school teacher doing her best to inspire a class of 10-year-olds but unable to because of one unruly and chaotic student. With her career in question and the child’s behaviour spiralling, she makes a series of bad decisions that lead to her accidentally taking and locking this “bad apple” in her home. Maria tries desperately to backtrack, but when the class starts flourishing and the staff and parents are thrilled with the improvement, she finds herself in a very complicated predicament.

Written by Jess O’Kane, the movie is based on Rasmus Lindgren’s debut novel De Oönskade. Oskar Pimlott will produce for Pulse Films.

In the wee hours of the night (or early in the morning if you live across the pond), the nominations for the 72nd annual BAFTA Awards were announced. The British Academy, which chimes in each year before Oscar makes its announcement, put forth their nominees while Academy members now have their ballots in hand. As such, this is worth paying attention to. They split things up fairly evenly today, backing one movie in particular, but given plenty of others over a half dozen citations. Still, there were major snubs, which we’ll get to below. BAFTA certainly didn’t follow previously blazed trail this awards season, that’s for sure. Leading the way by a healthy margin was Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite, which racked up an even dozen nominations, well ahead of any other film. Next in line was the quartet of Bryan Singer’s Bohemian Rhapsody, Damien Chazelle’s First Man,...

Yorgos Lamthimos’ twisted period piece “The Favourite” led all films in nominations for the British Independent Film Awards (Bifa), which were announced on Wednesday in London.
The black comedy, which stars Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz in a tale of 18th century palace intrigue in England, was nominated in 13 categories, two shy of the record set last year by “Lady Macbeth.”
Its nominations come on the heels of three nominations and one award at the Gotham Independent Film Awards, which means that the film from a Greek director has been accepted as an American independent film by one awards body and as a British indie by another.

Yorgos Lanthimos’ Venice Special Grand Jury Prize winner The Favourite leads nominations for this year’s British Independent Film Awards with 13 in its court. The twisted take on the British monarchy and period cinema, which Fox Searchlight releases November 23 in North America, has nods for Venice Best Actress laureate Olivia Colman as well as for Best Film, Director, Screenplay and for its supporting cast Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz. The latter is also up for Best Actress in Oscar winner Sebastian Lelio’s Disobedience, which likewise scored a Best Film nom and put Rachel McAdams in the Supporting Actress category.
Following The Favourite is Bart Layton’s heist pic American Animals with 11 nominations, Michael Pearce’s Beast with 10 and Lynne Ramsay’s You Were Never Really Here scooping eight. Each is also competing in the Best British Independent Film race.
Bifa noted today that the nominations list demonstrates a record year for female representation, with over 40% of the individual nominations recognizing women in the industry across directing, writing, producing, performance and craft. Female nominees make up over 50% of the talent nominated in Best British Independent Film and dominate both Most Promising Newcomer and Breakthrough Producer.
Ramsay notably continues her long association with Bifa, scoring her third nomination for Best Screenplay and her second for Best Director. With her You Were Never Really Here, Joaquin Phoenix scores his second Bifa Best Actor nomination for his role as a tortured hitman in the psychological noir thriller.
Joe Cole (A Prayer Before Dawn), Rupert Everett (The Happy Prince), Charlie Plummer (Lean On Pete) and Steve Coogan (Stan & Ollie) round out Best Actor. The Best Actress category also features Gemma Arterton (The Escape), Maxine Peake (Funny Cow) and Jessie Buckley (Beast).
The Bifa ceremony will be held on Sunday December 2 at London’s Old Billingsgate. Below is the full list of nominations.

Yorgos Lanthimos’ acclaimed period drama “The Favourite,” and Bart Layton’s heist movie “American Animals,” have landed the most British Independent Film Award nominations this year, with 13 and 11 apiece. “You Were Never Really Here” also put in a strong showing with 8 noms.
Bifa has made strides to ensure its voters for its awards are mindful of their influences and this year instigated a BFI-backed unconscious bias program for its voting members, juries, committees, and board.
In a record year for female representation – over 40% of nominations in the individual categories are women – Olivia Colman is nominated for best actress for her role as Queen Anne in “The Favourite.” Her co-stars Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz are both up for best supporting actress. The latter also landed a best actress nom for her performance in “Disobedience.”

Toronto Film Festival buzz film Beast has unleashed its trailer in anticipation of its May 11 theatrical release. Roadside Attractions is teaming with 30West on Michael Pearce’s psychological drama, which made its U.S. premiere in the Spotlight section this year at the Sundance Film Festival.
Beast was one of several splashy rights acquisitions at the Toronto fest by 30West, the new outfit co-founded by Dan Friedkin and Micah Green. Marking the feature-length debut of writer-director Pearce, it stars Jessie Buckley, Johnny Flynn and Geraldine James and centers on a small island community where a troubled young woman falls for a mysterious outsider who empowers her to escape from her oppressive family. First three investments from slate fund revealed.
London-based production outfit Horizons Media is launching a production fund targeting UK indie filmmakers.
Backed by a network of private investors, the Horizons team say they intend to invest £10m over the next three years in a slate of titles.
These investments will include co-production partnerships with up-and-coming production teams, as well as in-house productions, the first three of which has been announced: thriller Bodies, currently in post-production, sci-fi mockumentary 200 Days, and a drama set on the London stand-up circuit, Last Laugh.
Horizons was launched this year by Tom Large, whose credits as a director include 2014 sci-fi Beyond and 2016 sci-fi Arcadia, with investment director Alexandra Buchanan and development consultant Kristian Brodie.
Separately, Horizons is also launching a finishing fund in partnership with Transgression Films. The fund will provide late-stage investments for producers seeking development or post-production funding for their projects.
